Parade Interview With Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson turned millions of females around the world into frenzied fans when they saw him heat up the screen in Twilight as the heartthrob vampire Edward Cullen. And the love continues as Pattinson returns in New Moon.

Parade.com's Jeanne Wolf got up close and personal with the devilish and charming 23-year-old superstar. Pattinson shared his thoughts on being romantically challenged and getting a handle on becoming an overnight celebrity.

The love bug bites the deepest.

"What's interesting about this story is that it's supposed to be about this all-powerful immortal creature. But he's completely destroyed just by falling in love with this normal girl. He can't control anything afterwards. His entire life turns upside down. So I guess love can be more lethal than a vampire bite."

A new perspective on relationships.

"Getting involved in Twilight has definitely changed my mind about how people are kind of fanatical about wanting to have the perfect relationship. I had no idea that people were so desperate and felt like it was so unobtainable. They want to put this idea of unconditional devotion just so high above everything else, which is why they can't get enough of this story."

Advice to the lovelorn Bella.

"I keep wanting to tell people who think she should choose between Edward or Jacob that she should choose someone else. Jacob seems like the perfect viable option at the beginning of New Moon, but he turns out to be just as tortured as Edward is. So I guess Bella is just an unlucky girl."

Breaking up was hard to do.

"There was something weird about doing that scene where Edward tells Bella he's never going to see her again. Millions of fans see it as the ideal for a relationship. So breaking up the ideal relationship is pretty daunting. As for a breakup like that in my own life, I can't think of one."

And don't ask him about being romantic.

"I don't know, I can't think of a single romantic thing I've ever done. That's terrible. Wait. I put a flower in someone's locker when I was 15-years-old. It was a girl named Maria. She thought it was somebody else that had done it and the other guy was trying to take credit."

The scene where he almost took it all off.

"I felt pretty goofy stepping out into the sunlight in front of 2,000 people in a town square, ripping my clothes off. I was essentially doing a striptease. But here's the irony, it was also one of the moments where I've really felt closest to people's emotional attachment to Edward. There were so many extras in that scene who were Twilight fans who had flown in just to be a part of it. It was a moment where I've felt the whole weight of anticipation, and I guess responsibility as well, of being Edward, for all the people who were kind of so obsessed with the stories. It was quite uplifting and it was also very nerve-wracking."

Going head-to-head with Taylor Lautner.

"I didn't see Taylor until just a little bit before we started shooting. I had the same reaction as everybody else. It's like, 'Jeez, now I have to go to the gym.' Looking at Taylor's martial arts videos from when he was nine, I wouldn't really want to fight him for real unless maybe I had some kind of weapon. But in the story as it's written, I think it's actually a fact that Edward would win over Jacob. So I guess I can hold onto that for my ego."

The good news (and the bad) about becoming famous.

"It's a scary situation to be in, in a lot of ways. You really have to question yourself a lot more. Before Twilight, I did any movie that I could and I tried to make the best of it afterwards. But now you're expected to come and provide, not only economic viability at the box office, but also a smashing performance as well. When no one's watching your movies and you get a part, you can do whatever the hell you want. I don't have that luxury anymore."

What he has in common with Edward.

"I guess stubbornness in some ways about some things. Edward is pretty self-righteous, and I guess I am too. I get quite obsessive about things and possessive as well. I have very specific ideas about how I want to do my work and how I want to be perceived, to the point of ridiculousness sometimes. I don't listen to anyone else. That's why I don't have a publicist. I can't stand it if someone is trying to tell me to do something, even if it's probably a mistake sometimes. I'm like a control freak about it. I've never really struggled with anything until recently. I've got to stop being so self-depreciating because people are starting to believe it. Like, 'That guy is an idiot.'"

He is so handsome! (Wait, this photo is from last year?)

(Anyway, the DH found out that I'm enamored with RP. He said I'm obsessed. Then he asked how I find the time to expend my obsession. Blah, blah, blah. Then I asked him to accompany me to the midnight showing. He agreed. Then now he cannot, because he's attending a conference early Friday; he can't stay up late.)

I'm braving the teen screamos alone!

My DH hasn't discovered my Robsession yet (my kids have though) but he has discovered the ff and can't believe how pornographic it is.
I'm braving the screaming teens with my sons and some friends CAN'T WAIT !!!!

Rob gives the best interviews-I can always count on him for some laughs! LOVE OLE ROBERTO!!

Angie said...

Thansa, I may have to see the movie alone as well. The friend, who was going to see it with, just had a baby. Not sure she is going to make it to the movie. boohoo

I am not married, so no one to discover my Robsession. My dogs may complain, however.

Yes dear, we know...we watched you, and you gave us all a freaking heart attack!

I was supposed to be off Thursday on so I could get my NM/Rob fill, and my work canceled all vacations and threw us into a 5 day training course. So....Thursday will be at work all day, go see Twilight @ 9, then NM @ 12:00...will get home about 2:30, then back up at 5 for class.

it's worth it though, and have a good friend doing it with me..

*sigh**

Angie said...

RPG, try to get some rest between now and then. Once you see the movie, bet you will not get any rest before work. Too much excitement.;)

In the picture above the article Rob looks delicious and yes he is very handsome as always, but he looks exhausted!!!

Thansa and tgill,
My hubs doesn't know either. He was surprised when I read the Twilight books (couldn't hide that), so I had to try to explain that I needed to read some "fluff" after a particularly grueling semester. And I made sure to always make fun of the books while reading them so he would not be too concerned. I don't know what he would think if he knew about my Rob habit! It truly is a Rob habit, more than a Twilight one. I will go to see New Moon, although not right away--want fewer screaming girls in the theater. And alas, I will be alone, and probably in disguise. The sad side of remaining closeted.
That's why I love Robsessed--I know I'm not really alone!

ADM

I know I will probably be too amped up to sleep after! If rob can go days without sleep I can do it for one night!

chrissy said...

Turns out he does have a publicist now though, right? isnt that who interrupted his interview with Ryan Seacrest when Ryan started asking him questions about him and Kristen. if so he'll probably start censoring alot more of what he says now.

crazy vamp said...

No, puddle, you are not alone at all. One more closeted here!
My DH would think I am retarded, or really crazy, or both, if he knew. He is a damn intelectual, famous writer in his field of work, professor and blah blah blah.
My son would die of shame (he is a teen), my daughter has a small clue...

I will go to the theater with the kids and some of their friends. I will hate the screams, and will have to find a way to go back and watch it ALONE next week... :))
I went to see Twilight, alone, 8 times... :0

Hi, ADM!!

crazy vamp said...

@ RPG ~
you will be soooo tuned... in a damn good way!! 0-0

just checked in and saw all of the interviews...WOW!!!

well i just started my job a couple of weeks ago and i am taking friday off, i said i had a doctor's appt. :)

so i am going at midnight thursday too. i finally found a baby sitter for my son :))) CAN'T WAIT

solas said...

Am going alone; no one likes to sit next to me in a movie== I react!
Unless I can somehow get to the NYC showing on Thursday evening, I am going to Friday morning showing in the hopes the screamers that would be in a theatre THursday midnight will be in school.(Yes, I am assuming screamers are teens--hope I am not wrong about either assumption) Screaming freaks me out. I just want to watch and react and enjoy in my own odd way!

crazy vamp said...

@ Ana73 ~ the things we do for this guy...

*waving back* to ADM... Hi, girl! So many new threads today, too! I don't know how Gözde, Dani and Kate run this site and have a "real" with family, friends, and jobs...
I can't check all the threads and read all the stuff some days! Stupid job!

crazy vamp said...

@ solas: if 'you react', as you said, you might be 'a screamer' too...
Who knows what you might do, or say, or moan, or scream, when that gorgeous takes his shirt off??
I will be with my kids, and already preparing my straight face... damn!

Ana73 said...

crazy vamp - completely agree with you the things we do :))

actually the my co-worker is young and really nice and she is a taylor fan, so we talk twilight which is cool.

solas - i do hope you get to the NYC show on thursday, that would be great.

RPLover said...

I'm going Saturday to the afternoon showing-that way I can get a sitter for my daughter and I can hopefully avoid some of the craziness of Friday night-if I had a girlfriend to go with, though, I'd probably brave it on opening night!! I've often wished that a couple of us could get together to go...who better than a fellow Robsessor to see this with? :)

oh well, hubby agreed to go with me, I'm just going to have to try to stay calm next to him! maybe I'll do a shot of Nyquil beforehand or something...LOL!

Ana73 said...

oh, i was actually in shock my husband actually said that he wanted to see it too so we are going on sunday afternoon. i am going thursday night with my daughter and her friends.

RPLover said...

just testing out my new avi...

crazy vamp said...

God, RPL, you are brave! To go see NM with your hubby?? LOL!
You will definitely need something... nyquil puts me down... would be a bad choice for me. But, for sure, you will need to take some stuff...

Angie said...

crazy vamp, I was just thinking about that. This month has been a crazy ride, just watching from home. I can't grasp how Rob is dealing with it, Plus, Gozde, Dani and Kate. I feel guilty that just looking at my computer tires me. They are doing all the work.

RPL, I so wish I lived near one of you. It would really be nice to be able to share this Robsession in person.

Angie said...

RPL, great new avi. He looks so devilish. heehee

Hi crazy vamp!
Yes, I have decided that it's okay to let my husband reap the mysterious yet excellent benefits of my secret Robsession!

crazy vamp said...

Ana is another one going to the theater with the hubby...
Brave girls!
My kids took DH to watch Twilight; I sat beside him (I was in my... maybe 8th time there). I kept myself, 'cause there were no surprises for me. But DH was terrible. I wanted to HIT HIM! He kept giving me that "bored" look (the one he does sooooo well, when he thinks that something is stupid). Oh boy, I wanted to hit him right there!...

No, I will never watch any of the Twilight movies with him again, that is for sure!

crazy vamp said...

@ puddle ~ good for you (and for him)!! I've been doing this, too! For almost a year... :) And he does not have a hint! lol.

@ ADM ~ I feel guilty for the girls too, sometimes. I really don't know how they run this site and still have a real life. I get tired, and late with stuff, only by checking on the computer.
And this is the best Rob-site!
Wonder women! :)

Ana73 said...

crazy vamp - my husband just trips out on the whole twilight hysteria, he says i have never seen anything like this before, and he is right. my 5 year old hated twilight cuz i watched it too much but he wants to see new moon, he gets excited everytime he sees the promo on TV, not sure if i will take him or not, this one might be too much for him.

femroc - ALOT of stars were there last night, i actually laughed when i saw jennifer love hewitt after her comments on ellen. i was surprised to see joan jett there too, to support kristen.

RPLover said...

ADM-wouldn't it be fun to go with someone who appreciated Rob like we do? none of my friends who live close to me get it. :( And, yes, I'm being brave because even though I've tried to be sneaky, I think my hubby is on to me and so he'll probably be watching me for my reaction, especially to THE scene! So I'm gonna have to be dying on the inside.

I'll probably be bitting my lip like my avi here! ;) I just love this naughty expression on his face!! LOL

Angie said...

RPL, I have one friend that I thought shared my Robsession. Turns out she has an Edward obsession. WTF

I was not amused. I thought at least I would have someone to go to the movie with. Not so sure she will be going. She just got out of the hospital with her new daughter. grrrr :b

Angie said...

Oops, forgot to say GOOD LUCK not showing your hand at the movie with hubby.

Ana73 said...

ADM - my daughter has an edward obsession not a robsession but i dont care cuz at least i am going with someone. last year for twilight i literally went by myself to the movies because no one wanted to see it with me.

crazy vamp said...

Girls, that was fun! I really enjoyed sharing my Rob-secrets with you.
WOW, it would be great to go together to the theater. Some of the Robsessed girls that live in Australia are made some plans.
My female friends here are all frigid, I guess. No one is Robsessed. Or maybe they are, like I am: in their own closet!!
I won't ask them. Academia holds me back! Stupid thing...

Anyway, good night girls. Talk tomorrow. Have sweet Rob-wet-dreams!

RPLover said...

have a good night, crazy vamp! :)

ADM, darn those kids, they just get in the way of what's important! LOL that sucks, so you're going by yourself? wish we lived closer to each other! :)

I actually told my hubby that I would go with or without him, never been to the movies by myself before but I would have done it, and actually almost hoped he'd pass. LMAO but he saw Twilight and he says he wants to see NM, too. He likes Harry Potter and stuff, too, so I wasn't that surprised, but still... ;))

MMc said...

I can't stand it if someone is trying to tell me to do something, even if it's probably a mistake sometimes. I'm like a control freak about it. I've never really struggled with anything until recently.

Wow - this woman he's got pulling him out of interviews is like the control freak now.......according to what he said above.......I can't imagine he's liking what she is doing very much.

17foreverlisa said...

Was there an article after that picture? *thud*

RPLover said...

LOL @ sprtzmom-I know, sometimes I'm too blinded to read anything! ;))

Angie said...

Good night crazy vamp.

RPL, I know! Kids! When she told me she was pregnant I was all happy for her. Then she told me her due date. All I could think was "damn, you have got to be kidding me" "know I have to go se New Moon by myself".

She still wants to go. Don't know if that is possible.

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

Most oft friends are Edward obsessed... But they're all I've got so I make do..

My grown ass daughters hate Rob because they feel I'm too obsessed.. Whatever ... Grow the fuck up and live your own lives and let me live mine.

Grown daughters need to realize that their moms still have hearts, eyes, souls and needs.

Angie said...

LMAO @ Sprtzmom. Sometimes all I see are pretty pictures. Words...what words?

RPLover said...

aw, tell her to suck it up! LMAO she really should have planned it better... ;)

I just can't wait for Saturday...and I found it interesting that so many of the interviewers who saw it commented on how light-hearted it was at times. All we've seen is the drama, and I know there's a lot of it, but I'm curious to see how much humor there will be.

I just can't wait, I've never looked forward to a movie more-it'll be my first time to see Rob on the big screen!

Angie said...

LOL @ RPG.

At least Rob and Edward are in the same place most of the time. LOL
Makes it easier for us to hang out with the Edward lovers.

RPLover said...

don't know how someone could love Edward more than Rob! He's so perfectly imperfect, he's irresistable for me-and, um, Edward's *whispers* fictional...

LMFAO oh well, at least they're not into Jacob! ;))

Ana73 said...

RPL - you crack me up, tell her to suck it up - LOL

well i just finished reading new moon today and tomorrow night i am watching twilight to really prepare for thursday night, ok i feel a little weird to say all that but only you guys understand.

Angie said...

I can't wait, I don't think I have looked forward to a movie as much as this, either.

I saw Twilight on the big screen, but it was in Feb. of this year. No screaming teens, the buzz was over.

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

very true...but then I try to talk about rm, or bel ami or uc...and they get glassy eyed...
Thank god for everyone here!

Ana73 said...

this is funny, my husband just called to tell me that rob is going to be on ellen on friday and i told him that i already knew, i told him about letterman, jimmy kimmel and regis & kelly, he called me a freak - he asked me, do you also know what time he eats, i told him i wish :) LOL

Angie said...

RPG, I would be in a loony bin if not for all of you. I am pretty sure I was heading that way till I stumbled across Robsessed.

Ana73 said...

RPG - i dont think my daughter will go with me to see the other movies next year, so i maybe going by myself, which sucks.

Angie said...

LOL @ Ana...we all do. I'll cook!

RPLover said...

I was one of the stupid ones who didn't see Twilight until it came on Pay-per-View, and didn't read the books until months later! I'm late to the game, but ignoring friends and family to make up for lost time! hahaha

so seeing Rob's beautiful face in the theater is going to be a big thrill for me, not to mention the happy trail...God keep me strong... ;)

the only thing that's going to wreck it for me is my town's theater has 3 screens, obviously they'll put it in the biggest room, and that screen has a water mark on it off to the side that looks like a pair of boobs! it distracts me everytime! LMFAO I'm just counting on being too mesmerized to notice this time.

Angie said...

RPG, I made my Edward friend go see Little Ashes with me. I don't think she was as impressed as I was. Of course I did not learn till very recently that she is indeed an Edward fan and not a Rob fan. Crazy!

RPLover said...

LMAO, Ana! we pretty much know whenever he blows his nose!! that's too funny...

Angie said...

Oh damn RPG, I am cracking up! Hope those boobs stay away from Rob's face. LMFAO

Ana73 said...

RPL - you must be in a small town, that is too funny that watermark. we have at least two movie theatres here and one is new - thank goodness.

Ana73 said...

since i didn't start blogging til this thread and i dont want to go back thru all of the comments from earlier...i have a couple of questions about last night that maybe you guys would know...

who was the white haired guy that took a pic with rob when he got on the red carpet???

and did he get a new person in his camp, the lady who was rushing him???

did anyone see his family in any of the pics???

RPLover said...

yeah, really small town, that water stain's been there for years, I don't think they're ever gonna fix the damn thing!!

when we went to see the last Pirates of the Carribean, the part where Jack wakes up on the beach and there's just a close up of his nose-I think it turns out he's smelling a peanut or something-it lined right up with the stain and it looked liked he was sniffing the boobs. I laughed so hard I cried. :)))

RPLover said...

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

Lmao rpl!! Watermark... As long as it doesn't cover up any Rob parts!!!

ADM
yea I dragged my friend to little ashes and she was horrified that he kissed another man...

God people need to grow up!!!

RPLover said...

Ana, I think someone said that the white-haired guy was one of the higher-ups from Summitt. Don't know anything about that chick, except that everyone HATES her today! lol

and the only one of Rob's guests I saw in a pic was Sam, but I heard that Tom and both of his sisters were there, too...he said his mom had invited like 18 people or something...

Angie said...

LMAO @ RPL, again!

Johnny Depp sniffing boobs!!!!!!!!!

RPG, people make me crazy. It is a beautiful movie get over it.

RPLover said...

RPG-I agree! how about the people who want to argue that he's gay because of that role? I guess some folks just don't get it.

{shakes head}

Ana73 said...

the girl's story from ustream was said and he handled it really well but it totally didn't look he was expecting something like that and it seemed like a total downer for him.

Angie said...

Moon at Letters to Rob said she saw his parents there. Moon and UC were amongst the screaming mass.

Ana73 said...

RPG -i never saw little ashes, it never played around here so i still have to wait for DVD. you probably should have went by yourself and then you wouldn't have to hear the shit talk.

RPL - you are cracking me up about your theatre, does it also have sticky floors. where i used to live it was a little town too with a crappy theatre and the sounding sucked and the floors were always sticky, i went there once and never went back.

RPLover said...

I thought he seemed really touched, but I don't think they needed to hit him with it on camera! also, if I had been that girl I definately would have cried, I really thought she handled it well...I don't think it was exactly her idea to share it right then, either! Those two commentators were annoying, to say the least!

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

It would be such a hoot if all the robsessed girls (minus the crazies and haters.. You know who you are) could get together, have drinks..watch Rob movies, maybe have Rob stop by....

There's a FF right there!

RPLover said...

yep, sticky floors, seats that smell like popcorn farts, every cliche about old theaters you can think of! LMAO it's all I've got, though, unless I want to drive a couple hours and pay double on top of it. they're showing NM, so I'll take it! ;))

RPLover said...

RPG, that would be so much fun, it's too bad we're spread out all over the country!

Angie said...

RPG that would be wonderful! Darn it.

Ana73 said...

RPL- you are cracking me up over here, i totally know your theatre. and the springs are broken on the chairs... LOL

yeah, i also agree they kind of put the girl on the spot by saying tell him your essay but like i said he handled it well. i probably would have been crying just being that close to him without the sad story.

RPG - yeah, that would be great if we could all get together. we need to have a rob convention.

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

RPL.. Popcorn farts??? Rotflmao!!!

As long as there's no creepy men with their hands down their pants!!

Ana73 said...

ADM - yeah me too, after a while it was blah, blah, blah, black screen, trailer, then back to blah, blah, blah....

RPLover said...

LMFAO it's not a good theater unless you can hear folks prying their shoes off the floor for every step! and Christ, if they've got their hands in their pants I don't want to know! hahahahaha

at least admission is cheap-I don't think they've got the guts to charge any more. ;)

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

Night Ana! Hang in there sweety!

RPLover said...

well, they were inside this enclosed soundproof room on the red carpet, so at least Rob got a sit-down and a little bit of a breather, which was cute. ;) but then Ryan had to ask him "what do you say to your fans who are wondering about your relationship with your co-star Kristen?" (at least I'm pretty sure that's how he worded it) and the Summit chick just lost her cool, glaring at Ryan and saying to Rob "let's go, we're leaving", Ryan starts whining, "I can't ask that? she's his co-star! first time I've ever been cut off!" and poor Rob leans into the mike and says "I would tell them to go see New Moon, it's great!" and the chick kinda grabs his arm and pulls him out of the box. It was embarassing. :(

wow, sorry, that was a long description!

chrissy said...

yeah it was weird. it's like, he's been asked that question a million times and now some publicist is going to make it seem ten times more obvious that something is going on by not letting Rob answer and pulling him away. he might as well have said, No comment. lol.

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

Rpl

thanks! I had no idea!

RPLover said...

it was crappy of Ryan to try and get the question in, the lady was saying that there weren't supposed to be any personal questions, and he damn well knew that the question was off limits. But instead of getting so upset, she could have just said, next question, or sorry, time's up...I think the only person who handled it well was Rob, and you could tell it was uncomfortable.

but, ya know, it was a pretty crazy night and emotions were running high...in the end I really think that Ryan should have behaved himself.

RPLover said...

well, I think I'm gonna call it a night, too. Have a good one everybody-Letterman tomorrow! :)
