Robert Pattinson's Musician Friend Bobby Long Talks About "Paparazzi Attack" :)

Audio of Bobby Long at Portland concert joking about the paparazzi chase: "it was my 1st time"

(laughing) You have no idea how hard it is sometimes. (laughing) I'm joking. Yeah, I do, we got chased last night. (laughing) It was my first time and it was great, uh... (laughing) It was also one of the weirdest...I dunno. LA is just crazy back there it's nice to be in a place where... I think LA tries to be cool (mumbles) and it thinks it's cooler than here. (laughing) But that's why it's nice going to a place I guess where it's actually cool and people are cool, and not sold out. And they're all in great clothes, I like the clothes, When I was younger I used to do that, and that's why I insist on having my jacket for Portland. And my mum and my dad, used to try and find me stuff to wear. (laughing) (and then hestarts talking about the song he's about to sing)

Thanks to http://twitter.com/aredi for the sound clip :)

the moral of the story is: rob and friends know LA is crazy, and they certainly know what to expect when they all go out together so they deal with it as best they know how and LAUGH at it. if rob was scared for his life or felt he was in danger, he'd take some of that $10 million he made this year and hire a $10 per hour goon to watch over him. and i think we all know rob well enough to realize that he is an atypical celebrity and would seriously quit acting and move to a land far far away if he felt for one second that it was all too much to live with and that he was becoming someone he swore he'd never be and trading his dreams for security. seriously people. stop the fighting, stop the DRAMA, stop going on and on about how people are hating the campaign. no one hates the campaign, it's the MEAN that is packaged with it. so stop it, stop the whining on the radio, stop tweeting scathing open letters to anyone and everyone that thinks Rob is doin' fine, just stop. everyone hates invasive paps that take up-the-skirt-pics, and i mean everyone. there's no drawing a line with the paparazzi, and trying to allow them only to take pics from a distance is like handing a kid a candy bar and asking him to only eat half. it ain't gonna happen. but it's cool that you stand up for what you believe in, however, it's also cool that we don't all sign up. the world would be a boring place if everyone thought the same thing. so just stop. it's Christmas. go pour soup for the homeless or ring a bell in front of the mall. bobby's laughing about it, they are all laughing about it. there's more important things to rally for and fight over than this rich guy with the means to take care of himself. and that's the last thing i'm going to say about the whole thing.

burn away...

*SIGH*
I was THERE... he's soo talented and was so ADORABLE!
OHH but wait, there was this moment when he was singing and playing the guitar and he hit those note and it just gave me chills but THEN (OMFG) he ran his right hand through his hand and pulled it a lil bit and then left it all in a disaray and I seriously thought I would loose my mind. It just seemed like just a Robert reminding action, I thought I was gonna pass out. HANDS DOWN one of the sexiest things I've EVER seen!

Oh yeah, RPG that was you who called out! HAHA I was in such a daze... when we walked up no one else was over there and I wanted to be all cool like, "so whatcha doin after this" but he was so shy and quiet, it threw me through a loop. I NEVER get nervous around people but he was jus standing there like looking SO nervous and I'm thinking why are YOU nervous. It was a mess! LOL Luckily my friend asked for a picture. It was like being on a akward date when you think someone is cute but you dont know what to say and you bothing just standing there smiling at each other like freaks! LMAO

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

Dominque,

LMAO! It was like being on a first date, and he did look nervious standing there.
The funny thing is, everyone else was busy looking at the tee shirts, and you just walked up and asked for a photo, then I did..and he was just standing there, leaning, looking all sexy & shy!
BTW, thanks again for taking my photo!!

And yep, that was me on the audio!

dominique and rpattzgirl I was there too and I was DUMBFOUNDED! I had never seen Bobby live before and he left me speechless. I've met a few famous ppl, mostly bands, and have never reacted that way. He was soooo sweet and asked me if I was OK FML. In fact, my hubby who so graciously came with me not having any idea who Bobby was (BTW he's now a huge fan) dealt nicely with my fangirling all nite and bought me a hoody & TShirt and took my pic with Bobby! oh, and I snagged the set-list which a apologized to Bobby for, Gah I'm such a dork. Anyway are you from Portland?

kbansch said...

Oh, and I had a feeling when Bobby was joking about the incident that it wasn't as bad as it looked...Either way, they both looked hottttt.

yep, PDXSparkler I'm stuck/live in Portland. It was my first time seeing him too, I missed the lst show..drama... but I've met alot of celebrities (I say that in a non bragging way, it was usually work related) but NONE was as shy as him. I was SO thrown. I didn't buy a CD or hoodie :( I forgot my damn wallet so all I had was the $20 i used to get in.
LMAO @ RPG it was HILARIOUS how EVERYONE was looking at the cd's and hoodie and he's standing RIGHT there and people were barely interacting with him. I dunno what happened after we left, but it was like that in the beginning. The whole thing was just so awkward I had to get from back there, I couldn't focus and by the time I was normal minded my best friend was embrassed and ready to go.
OH @ RPG and PDXsparkler WTH was up with ALL the people talking so Loud and that girl who dropped her drink, was she drunk? LOL!

kbansch said...

dominique YES that chick was WASTED! I was standing right next to her almost the entire time. First she spilled a drink on someone sitting near her, she almost fell a couple of times, and actually when we were waiting to talk to Bobby she tried to push her way forward...I was like "I don't think so" and everyone was looking at me funny because she was much bigger than me LOL.

I love his shyness...it is supercute! Crap I hope he comes back soon!

RPLover said...

wow, I'm still so excited/jealous about you ladies getting to go see Bobby, I would LOVE to! his music is amazing.

MyRobertPattinson, I'm just a little take aback with your harshness here, and before any arguing has even begun on this thread! you must be dealing with some people that I don't know about...

anyway, I hate paps, I think they are all kinds of wrong and those pics still make me sad. but I'm glad that they can laugh it off for the most part, although I'm sure it's easier for Bobby to do that than it is Robert-just hasn't had to deal with it as much. I'm quite sure he's fine and not living in fear, but I wish his boundries could be respected, that's all.

Haha! True. Well, I'm pretty sure I'd be fascinated by Rob no matter where he was from. The sexy hot accent is just a bonus.

He has such great friends. It makes me feel better about all the craziness he has to endure. I hope they are all headed back to London for the holidays.

Just a question: We haven't had Bobby Long in France yet so I must admit that I don't know him at all, except from the fact that he wrote "never think" and is one of Rob's best friends...
Would he have the same success if he wasn't a friend of Rob? Would you girls go to his gigs if he was just any other new artist?
It's only a question so don't get uptight... In no way am I pretending that you are all going to see him just in case Rob is there or any other thing linked to him... I just don't know the guy...

sissidelyon Honestly it's hard to say if he would be as famous or not if he weren't friends with Rob...but I (personally of course, I can't speak for anyone else) def would be just as much of a dedicated fan if he didn't know Rob. In fact, I am a bigger fan of Bobby than I am of Rob. His music hits me hard, his voice, his guitar and harmonica playing, and his songs are like stories that are so deep and meaningful. You just don't get that from most artists these days...Bobby is one of a kind and I'll be a fan till I die no matter who he is friends with. I was a fan before from watching clips on YouTube but seeing him live sealed the deal for me, I hope you get to see him sometime.

Fancy Cunt said...

@sissi,
well me personally I can openly admitt I was going to the first show just because it was a connection to Twilight and therefore Rob. I myspaced Bobby and listened to him, and then I actually became a fan. My friend on the other hand, has a thing for indie music is a writer and she's always going to shows so she'd heard of him through another singer/songwriter. But still, they'd only heard of him orginally through Twilight Sdtk.
I personally think it'd awesome he gets exposure from being Rob's bff, because it's just that. Exposure. I know my best friend is a song writer and if I made it famous, like INSANELY Rob style famous, I would PROMOTE the hell outta her. EVEN more than Rob does/did. I don't even think it was Rob's intention for his fans to jump onto the Bobby wagon, but he said he thought it was cool his friends were nobodys and now they can sell out 500 seat shows. Luckily Bobby's SUPER talented so people who might come for Rob, leave thinkin of Bobby.

solas said...

I have a lot to say; please forgive me or ignore me if it's too much.
First-- in a general sense, I abhor the idea of accepting any behaviour, no matter how repuslive or dangerous, just because it is done. Sometimes, we have to seek and work for changes rather than accept the status quo. The old adage of 'give them a finger and they take the whole arm' is the lesson learned.
Second- some of us--and frankly, I wish all of us- do not wish on others what we would not wish for ourselves or our loved ones. I know some tire of hearing my 'mother bear' growls, and Heaven knows I have been told I am over-protective, but I wouldn't want my own chldren's space invaded no matter what field they chose. it so happens my son does ridiculously dangerous things daily, and I wish some mother in some foreign country would realize this he is some mother's child, and would not send out her son or husband, etc, to blow my son up, just as I do not send him out to do that to others, just as I teach him to value life. I understand, though, that by choosing military and undercover op work, he knew he would be in danger. I do not accept that people who act, or perform music, etc, have made that same choice.
In a similar vein to caring about others and other people's children, I would rather people have the value of human dignity, and that includes NOT invading a person's space, attacking or even insinuating verbally, etc.
Third--more specifically- I do not know Rob personally, but I have gotten to know a bit about himself by listening to and reading interviews for quite some time now. And although he can sometimes laugh at the screaming, and although he has come to accept some of the madness, he has also made it clear over and over that he has personal space issues, that he feels endangered, that he has been upset and brought to tears. Many of us have heard the quite repulsive shouts of the papz about Rob;s sex life, with specific names and actions mentioned, trying to goad a comment, and I cannot abide that he ought just accept this, grin and bear it. No one ought to accept this.
Fourth--intelligent people reason and extrapolate from givens, and some of the givens we have are pretty distressing. Seeing Princess Diana's death after the papz chase, and then seeing Rob chased whilst driving, or even just in a car, is postively hair-raising (and I am not referring to Rob's lovely locks). I am positively bent for measures that put limits on, and that utterly reject, what is presently accepted as 'the way things simply are.' I understand that stars, especially beautiful ones, will be photographed, but that does not have to mean, by any definition, disresepctful invasion of one's space or personal life. There ought to be limits--say-- 6 feet-- and if encroaching in less than that, a person can be arrested. Closer than 6 feet is just too close, especially if cameras have flashes. And vehicles ought to be totally off limits-- any chasing of drivers, or anyone in a vehicle, ought to be grounds for immediate loss of license, etc. It is just too dangerous! Stalking laws ought to be clearly defined to include these limits.

solas said...

Fifth- as for hiring a 'goon'-- my son, when on leave or between missions, has been a bodyguard, and he told me he is very limited as to what he can do if someone is bothering or too close to a person he is guarding. if he punches out someone's lights, HE will be in trouble, and the person he is guarding can get sued, and of course if it is someone famous, it will be all over headlines. In fact, I wonder to what extent the invasion in close space and the disgusting verbal shyte is done soley (or mostly) in order to goad Rob into lashing out, thus securing a story, headlines, and possible lawsuit money.
last-- I don't thnk of Rob as some 'rich guy with the means to take care of himself' but rather as a human being who is being bothered, distressed, and treated with disrespect. Do we dismiss the rights of people if they are wealthy? Ought we ignore that simply because he is suddenly earning money? How about we work to make life better and safer and more comfortable for anyone we can?

Sarah said...

sissi- bobby actually co-wrote "let me sign" (never think was rob and sam's thing-they each did their own version of the song) i'm pretty sure bobby wrote the lyrics, and rob did the music for the song.

anyway, yes i would go see him if he had nothing to do with rob. i'd feel like a cheat otherwise just going to a show because of something as petty and shallow as that - whether or not i knew rob would be there. i'm huge into music, an enthusiast, so i'm all about the music when i go to a concert. that is the point of them. live music. so i just happened to find out about him thru rob, no biggie. it's cool that i can be fans of both of them but they're doing completely unrelated things.

and out of all rob's musician friends, bobby is the one that is most similar to the kind of stuff i listen to. so yeaaahh, goin to see him the first time soon :)

Sarah said...

solas - i agree with you on the limits thing. i'm not trying to pick a fight with anyone in specific or point fingers, trust me, because i know we're all rob fans here and a lot of you people are great. but like jen (myrobpattinson) said we all have our own personal opinions. we are all different as can be. and i'm going to say, with all due respect, i find it a bit annoying that a lot of fans are like "who cares what happens, who cares if they're up in his face, it's not the end of the world" I can't help but think they're only saying that because THEY just want to see any and all pics of rob, because of their obsession. If that's the case, I think that's taking a bit too far and they should chillax and find something else to fill the void.

Sarah said...

Anyway, do Brits not say "cool" a lot over there?

Wow, good points and great discussions all around..great post..is it possible that I like Bobby's voice and accent better than Robert's?..he sounds so cute :)

Are u girls serious?..he was standing right there and ppl were looking at merchandise and not even talking with him?..that's kind of strange..LOL @ he lost his pap virginity..Robert almost did with Julio the pathetic pantie shooter..literally.

Lynnes said...

If u have an opportunity 2 go see Bobby I highly recommend it. He's not only a talented singer but in between songs he's like this shy stand up comic w/ his stories of travel and such. I enjoyed that as much as the singing.

I forget who mentioned it, but him and rob do have similar habits and dammit it was hot as hell. Not to mention @ the SF show he was chuggen on a Heiny. Lord have mercy when he took a swig. He was a lil' shy when I met him, but I think I was worse.

I do agree w/ someone above that he is, IMO, the best singer of the group. Seeing him live was awesomesauce.

Pandora said...

@Sarah

I lived in the UK, known and talked to some cute brits (one was my bf XD) and they didnt say "cool" that many times while talking. XD

It wasnt meant as criticism towards Bobby, it was just funny that he said it so often. :D

Fancy Cunt said...

@ RPG I was SO glad when you told them to Shut Up. I wanted to but then all I could think was their gonna this girl is ghetto! LOL The drunk girls were kinda funny, but only because they weren't blockin my way like that other table.
@ Kemberly it was WEIRD. But he was so shy, I think girls were scared maybe? I dunno. He was just lookin down and kinda fidgty, it was awkward! LOL
@ Lynnes yeah he had Heiny @ our show too. He said at the first Portland show he couldnt drink on stage and that was weird for him so I think thats why they had it at this 21 and over place. I've never seen anyone drink on stage, it relaxed him i think tho.

Its so cute too how I could barely understand him, even some words Rob says sound so mummbled I have to play stuff twice to hear correctly. Their accents are so hot.

solas said...

Is drinking a matter of course now for performances? Back in the day when I used to sing in coffeehouses and similar venues, none of us drank on stage, that I can recall, just had to keep reaching down or over usually to the table area for a bit of water or tea--there was no such thing as bottled water yet.

(i could've choked her!) I haven't even developed them yet, fear they'll look so grainy and stupid. BUT I have some stupid dark G1 cellphone pics I might try and upload! I was so bummed! lol

I do love me some Bobby. That boy is cool..cool I tell you. He's not a sell out. LOL

But for real I'm glad Bobby can joke about it.He does seem to be sweet, a bit shy, but really funny. And hot. Sometimes you have to laugh and see through the BS.

I haven't had the pleasure to see him live, but a friend has. She did give him a certain pic to autograph per my request and he did write a special message again per my request. And I told her to tell him a certain something. It was cute and he loved it. But one day I hope to see him in person at one of his gigs.

@solas: if you play a pub or venue where they serve alcohol, it's customary to keep the band going with a bit of liquid refreshment, hopefully purchased by a kindly audience member or two. My experience, anyway. ;)

LOL they left him gifts of shots? Random... but mildly creative. Patron is like GASOLINE! LOL I bet he Did say that. @ solas Oh and I meant "think" this girl is ghetto. TYPO... but I just KNEW if I said something it was be bad, so we shut our traps and RPG saved the day... even tho they only shut up for like 15 minutes. It was soo weird, I've never seen people just try and talk Over the performer.

There was mos def howling (he even called some chick a wolf lol) and "OOOOWWWW"ing to the point that it made him laugh and he had to start over again, but everyone was really cool and jus enjoying music. kemberly-- my son understands that I want children, even grown children-- who are just any mother's children and G-d's children, safe. And he thinks I'm weird overall, but understands that I have been concerned about Rob; he saw some of the stuff when he was in NY last summer, and that is when we discussed bodyguards and what good they can do , if any.

solas said...

Thanks Kemberly; I viewed the video and I don't agree with it. People in other countries manage to live unaccosted, no matter the money they earn. Quite frankly, I find it shocking and grotesque that wealth is a target for rationalization of poor manners and disgusting behaviour.

lallieb said...

@Solas, once again thoughtful in making the point about the Paps invasion/violation of people. AND I don't think Rob fully realizes his financial worth yet or just hasn't paid attention to it. Hopefully, someone is watching out for him in that regard. I'm going to paraphrase HB interviewer "Rob got famous before he had a chance to coordinate his infrastructure." His trajectory to international fame has been quite unique and ultimately overwhelming. The good part is that he hasn't had the time to become jaded, image conscious or (heaven forbid) cynical yet-he's still the same modest guy who went for that auspicious audition 3 years ago. That's why we cherish him so much, and of course his beautiful visage. I really need to check out Bobby's music, but I spend so much time here I haven't got to it yet, but from the descriptions I've read, I know I'm going to like him.

Solas, I understand about the summer thing..that was a bit ridiculous..don't think Summit knew just how big Robert was..lol..guess I'm always going to be on both sides of this discussion..I can understand ppl being protective but not to the point of fans attacking other fans and doing stalkerish things (if I saw Robert show up some place and there were a group girls dressed like him plus wearing Robert masks..I would be mortified and so would he)..but I can also see how ppl would say..he got himself into this..he's making the money..he shouldn't complain or whine about anything..just suck it up and face it..but I don't want that to mean everything is just wide open and he's fair game..plus sometimes I see a hint of jealousy in those ppl's voices/comments..what have you..I can't even say I'm neutral..LOL..yea I turned alil testy with the military reference..I'm glad ur one of the Proud Moms..u just keep being you..but after the comparison of celeb to ppl in uniform took me a while to pull my jaw back up off the floor.

P.S. I'm reading Master of the Universe now that finals are almost over..not bad..I'll take my big mouth back over there now ;)

Kemb- As i wrote when I first came up with the idea of a group of us using masks to deflect the papz, if I KNEW IT WOULDN"T EMBARRASS OR UPSET HIM, I would absolutely look to get masks for a group of us and take turns on watch to hide him from paps by all of us wearing the same masks and getting him home safely.
I can see him laughing at the idea, but I can also see it getting old fast and can see him deep down mortified. I certainly would not do anything he would not want, would not seek to embarrass him== that is almost just as bad as the papz. But if he wants himself and friends to wear masks when papz are nearby, I hope he has fun doing so, and if he wouldn't mind fans helping himself out there, I would certainly try.

I think if you reread what I wrote about military vs celebrities, I did not equate them but for the concern I have. I made it clear that my son knew the dangers when he signed up, and we all by now know that Rob did not sign up for what he experiences. And although most times they are just annoying and distressing, papz can indeed be life-endangering.

I am FINALLY going to see Bobby next Saturday in NYC as well as Marcus the night before. It sounds like those of you who have seen him had the best time and he's just as lovely as his "friend". I cannot wait. Too excited for words!

I am hoping to go see (and hear) Bobby Long a week from Saturday Night. Not yet familiar with Marcus music, and I don't go out and about on Friday night anyway.

Cheeky Chops said...

No, I believe he knew it was going to be big..just because he realized after the audition just how popular the books were..and that's why he emailed Katherine and expressed just how much he wanted the part and how he would play it..Robert just didn't know it would be massive..what I'm trying to say is..he wanted to establish himself into american film so he could be a celebrity and famous actor..He may not have realized Twilight would have gotten him there faster than he thought..but he still wanted to be there..his job is ACTOR and just like any other job out there..ppl are always trying to move up and get ahead..atleast that's human nature..one of the first films he did was Harry Potter and that was huge at the time..so yea..I hate that lil "poor boy didn't sign up for this" comment all the time from ppl..Solas, this pap and celebrity thing isn't exactly new..plus these are kids..they have grown up seeing just how the celebs and papz interact now a days..if he needs protection he can get a bodyguard..of which he has had many..if he needs a momma..he's got an iphone and enough money to fly to London anytime he wants..plus he's got Kristen over there trying to act all hardcore, tough, and protective (which was really cute at first, but now she's just starting to look like a complete fake humorless prat, if she hates the questions so much..she's the one that needs to get out and run back to momma..rolling her eyes during interviews isn't very intelligent)..Yea I went there now that I'm in a ranting mood..LOL..this is in no way me expressing my belief that papz should chase after them in cars..or harass them at certain private moments..this is just me saying I'm sick of the self proclaimed Bodyguards, Mommies, and Bitch-faces of the world..Trust me on this, his life is not that bad..I joke around quite often about papz, celebs, bodyguards, and actually everything..but come on..when ppl start ragging on a person because they tweeted Robert was at a premiere and said AS A JOKE "want me to kidnap him for you fans"..that's alil bit pathetic..she didn't have to say shyte..she doesn't even have to have a damn twitter account or communicate with fans at all..she was trying to be light-hearted and funny during a bored moment..of course I'm generalizing here..this is not just towards Solas.

P.S. I like Bobby's music :)

Cheeky Chops said...

Now, enKemberpedia Britannica is going back to her story..LMAO..holy shyte.

No, dear Solas, the problem is... your sanity and great humanity are so foreign to some they simply see it as completely "other" and hence think that you are the one who's unhinged. We know better!

Karina said...

um, he wanted an American job. Why? He's an ACTOR, all the American jobs where you can make some dough are stateside. Look at the huge influx of British actors on American television right now. Robert was freaking broke and this was his last stand at trying to book a job.

He did not understand how big the films would be.

It's easy to look back and say he knew. But two years back, they had the sort of fanbase where the movies could have easily ended up in cult status like Underworld. Or totally eating it at the box office like another supernatural thriller WITH A HUGE FANBASE--Blood and Chocolate.

They were basically gunning for underworld box office longevity, where you could still film a trilogy for cheap, but with a sizeable profit.

@solas. You are a lady! I don't think I would have been so cool ;o) @Loisada, you are right too... It's a question of education and culture and I guess a question of experience...
Personally, I'm not a self proclaimed mommie... I am one and that makes the difference with some girl that thinks she knows better and will be arrogant about it... Another Mrs Know-it-all... I'm probably a bitch, and I love it... LOL

Solas from my experience you are a lovely lady and always have reason and intelligence behind your comments. Hope you enjoy seeing Bobby. Marcus is my fave though so please check out his music. His voice is very soulful and similar to Rob's in many ways. I like Way, way, way and Kiss is a Knife, oh and yes - all the rest too I admit. If I lived in the US I would be just following him around like a puppy...enjoy! Oh and please - give us your reviews when you've been...ta :)

@Loisada-Yea, she's a complete other alright..why don't u go back and read the comments she put under the post where Robert joked his Mom believed everything that was written about him..very distressing so say the least.

@Karina-I'm saying he could have stayed over there and kept doing indie films..making enough to sustain anyone..but no he tried for an american film about a book series on the best-sellers list..he's not just anyone tho..he wasn't exactly born poor.

@Sissi-I have three kids..ages 14, 9, and 4..Hi fellow Mom :)..I have never and will not ever want to be Mommie to or replace a 23 yr old grown man's Mommie..who did a great job raising him btw..no matter what some ppl try to elude too..and by the looks of ur occupation on ur profile..u really don't know who ur talking too when it comes to education..LOL..experience?..yea you can say I have as well..Look up erotomania..esp. the part where it explains there are some stalkers that have NO sexual attraction towards the victim..but believe they have a spiritual connection with them..e.g. a spiritual twin/mother/father..combined with a belief the victim is in serious need of spiritual, mental, and physical help and/or guidance.

@JandR-Never said Solas was a bad person..matter of fact I understand she thinks she means well..but this over-protectiveness and negative worry-wart bs is contagious and can become dangerous if spread to the wrong person or ppl..ppl can get crazy ideas in their head and can lead to ppl getting hurt..that's all I'm saying..Robert said it's not so bad and he doesn't complain about it..so ppl need to chill.

Rob never mind his fans, what he can't stand is the paps, he said in an interview regarding RM shooting, that his film is alrdy in the internet and that the paps wants him to fail.

If you hv seen (on youtube) the rude things the paps say to him, he has been very patient or else he wd hv gone crazy and hit on them.

Do you know how many celebrity went to court for hitting those paps? (Sean Pean, Gerald Butler etc).

Its not enough that the paps are in your face and taking ur pics for free, its the rude things they say to provoke you.

I’m not going to weigh in on the pap debate, simply because I think so few of us will ever or would ever experience the level of scrutiny and attention that Rob has been dealing with over the last year or so, including most celebrities, and how would we know what it’s like, and what the parameters are? Invasive it certainly is, but also, unfortunately, the unavoidable price of fame these days.

Just to mitigate a view of actors -not all are greedy, grasping, celebrity-seeking egotists who are willing to do anything for recognition. Some are very decent people who use their high profile to help others, and some are real artists that it is a pleasure to watch. Fact: most actors who actually manage to make into the Equity ranks earn less than $30,000 a year and with frequent unemployment. That’s about 85-90% of the membership. About 10% will earn more than that, on average, and only about 2-4% actually reach those six-figure and beyond salaries. Anybody going into the profession with the belief they will be an overnight sensation is
promptly disillusioned. Most will consider themselves fortunate if they get enough steady work to support having a family. I have seen an actor perform in a critically acclaimed Broadway show one week, and then six weeks later seen the same actor in a tiny ‘black box’ space off-off B’dway. Even with persistence, drive, and a lot of luck only some will reach the heights, no matter how talented. I’m sure most people know this, but we’re so used to reading about the top 2% it may be hard to remember the reality of the other 98. To go from jobbing thesp to international star in less than a year is very far from the norm, and could hardly have been ‘orchestrated’ by an actor, even if he went where the jobs are. I guess I say this because, you know, some of my best friends are....lol

Gozde said...

I think I should say something...

Nobody approves of the paparazzi. They are low lives that say rude things to get actors to "react" to them so they can SELL the video/picture.

So me, you or all of us telling them to back the fuck off will NOT stop them.

You know what WILL stop them? Rob losing popularity. Will he be more happy with it? Will he be more happy if noone cares about him anymore? MAYBE. I don't know. I think I watched and read more interviews of him than most of you. They are interviews, I'd like to think I get glimpses into his character with those interviews but who knows? Maybe I don't. I can't claim to know what he thinks.

And finally if a group of people started a campaign saying "Respect Gozde" I would be ashamed to DEATH. Because it would make people laugh at me. Respect is earned, if others asked that I be respected people would NEVER respect me. They would think I was a charity case.

I show him respect by not pretending to know what he would want, by not pretending to tell others what they should do.

Just my humble opinion, as always :)

Cheeky Chops said...

hahahahahaha Morning Jules, and I was up that late reading Master of the Universe..all ur fault..neener neener ;P

solas said...

Gozde, I respect your opinion. :-)
I personally see a difference between intellectual respect (respect that is earned) and human respect (treating others with respect, and wanting others to be treated with respect, teaching to treat others with respect, and acting to gain respect for others). I have seen again and again what silence does, even silence that has well-meaning intent behind it.

Again, it may come down to difference in the way one considers and understands (if one does consider)the teaching of 'love one's neighbour as one's self' and treating others the way we would like to be treated, and not doing to others what we don't want done to ourselves. Perhaps some of us don't want everyone to worry about us; perhaps some of us don't want anyone to make campaigns to stop certain actionis, to protect. I wish I could talk with Rob personally and seriously to determine if he is in these categories.

You would be ashamed to death. I hope Rob is not. Just as he accepted fans' screaming, even though it overwhelms him, even though it is deafening, I hope he can see the intent in those involved in the campaign, that they hate the way he was mistreated. It could be that Rob finds the papz amusing, etc; you are right that we don't know and cannot assume we know what he is thinking. But we can see from what he has said that he doesn't like it all. Again, I wish I could just speak with him seriously. IN any case, I believe he knows we wish him well.

Gozde said...

Oh no, let me make it clear: I don't think Rob would be ashamed of what his fans ares trying to do. I would be touched if I were him, I would appreciate it. I think others outside of the fandom will think of him as weak and as a joke.

But what do I know? I think everyone's heart is in the right place :)

solas said...

G-d knows I could be wrong, but from what I see of comments about how Rob is stalked or (mis)treated, even other actors and reporters are appalled at the papz behaviour, and I don't think they would fault Rob for this, especially since he did not initiate it; it was out of respect (there's that word again!) and admiration for himself.

Untamed said...

I'm still with Gozde.
Rob is new to celebrity, he has said himself that industry people (Directors, Producers, Studio Boss, etc.) are wary of hype. There is a lot of hype surrounding Rob and as much as we love him, people in the business may look at it (and him) as a big joke. He has yet to prove himself as an actor in the industry.
While Rob may appreciate his fans' support and desire to protect him, I can also see how Hollywood Insiders may roll their eyes at all this.
Pap harassment, though sickening at best, is part of the entertainment world.
In the end, Rob will keep his sanity because he's grounded and has a close-knit group of friends and family to help.
I think we need to give credit to the people closest to Rob, they would know if he's in emotional/physical danger and would help him if its really needed. His friends and family (and Stephanie and Nick)won't leave him out there unprotected.

@Kemberly, I've read all 50 chapters, last update was yesterday (it was a delicious one) but she won't be updating for a while.
When you have a minute, start reading University of Edward Masen.

PhinPhan said...

Haven't read Master of the Universe (?name?) but will. Am now reading University of Edward Masen and IS GOOD..is, is, is. Regarding paps/Rob, I think if it got to be too much, he would run off somewhere like Julia Roberts did (remember for like several years she was MIA?) and some of the old Hollywood actors fled as well and lived a life apart. Then there are those who do the craziest things to get back into the lime light. He has many choices I think and has made good ones thus far. I will trust his judgment. Just my 2cents (worthless no doubt).

Loisada said...

I'm with Jules on this one. As well intentioned as these "protection campaigns" may be, I think we need to give Rob more credit. He is not a child (well... I do think of him as a manchild in many ways, and he himself has said he's not a "man" yet... ;-)

But seriously, I think it's unintentionally demeaning to step up in his stead and try to force media hounds to "respect" him. I think his calm response to papzz has actually won him a great deal of begrudging "respect" even from them, but that doesn't mean they'll stop the baiting while he's a big money catch. That simply will not happen.

I may not understand or agree with Rob's media strategy, but he appears very happy lately and seems to be handling this frenzy well. And who knows, the strategy may work well for him in the long term. Honestly, as long as I'm not participating in the "fiending," then how he handles it is simply not my business.

AP said...

I've had no sleep so forgive lack of coherence. Godze: absolutely. Not wanting to speak for him either, but I think no actor worth his/her salt wants to be famous just for being famous. Hype is a tsunami-like force. However, all like their work appreciated. Fans, even if shrill on occasion, do. Ok, some are in because he sparkles so prettily, I know. Lol Likewise I believe he’d appreciate the attempts to protect him from the harshest side of the biz, but he also knows, like Edward, he’ll just have to ‘endure it.’ ;) One day, the world will be slightly less Robsessed…possibly. However, my sympathies are with those who care and I do wish him, like others here, a break from all the frenzy, and a holiday full of an ordinary life.

Santa List for himself so far: Lying in. Late brekkies. Evenings in the pub. A new four-footed family member. Instructional manual on how to use a washing machine. The Criterion Collection under the tree. Mucking about with the new electric: turn that amp up to 11. More time in the recording studio –yes, we know you were there in June..hem! Hanging out with friends, of either sex, of your choice. And that special day you’re going to spend with me. ;)

Off to crash...

I'm weighing in. Shout out to Karina and A for their comments, and of course Gozde. Kemberly needs a time out! I am appalled at her attack on Solas. All of us have listened to Rob's interviews and read his words, but nobody more than Gozde. So unless he has been totally making it up as he goes (hardly), there is nothing in what he has said that makes me believe he became an actor to become famous. In fact, I don't believe his heart & soul were really into acting, just something he could maybe do, music was also there for him. My point: Is there any other actor in history who had virtually NO name recognition (yes, even after playing CD in HP film), who spiraled into one of the most famous faces in the world in the space of, um, 1 year? I can't think of one. I only think of the Beatles (aging myself here). So, no, don't think Rob was prepared for it, expected it, or wanted it. The fact that he has so graciously, awkwardly, and charmingly dealt with it, is a measure of his character and WHY we so love him IMHO. But you are wrong Kemberly to think this was his goal by deciding to be an "actor." No way. Every day he has to now negotiate his private life. We understand that and why we are protective and not bitchfaces or mommies, he is in a place that few people on this planet will ever experience, and there's no manual for it.

"I show him respect by not pretending to know what he would want, by not pretending to tell others what they should do."

AMEN! Always right! Too sad the crazies will always pretend to know what he wants, what he thinks, who he loves, how he's feeling right now...he's screwed.

Shani said...

And let me add my two cents. Didn't Rob say that he started acting after he asked a group of cute girls where they came from because they were all happy and giggling and stuff? His dad told him to go over there and talk to them. So he found out they just came from acting class. That's when he decided to become an actor to get with cute girls. And a lot of actors have said that. Getting girls were their inspiration in becoming an actor. Never fame. Because you don't know what role would help you to hit it big. At times it really is luck of the draw. Every thing has to line up right for you to be as BIG as Rob is. This has never happened before and so he can't go by example. He is just doing his thing and taking everything in day by day. Rob is just blessed.
