Summit's 'Twilight' dilemma

From Variety

Splitting last novel into two films means expensive talks
By MICHAEL FLEMING

The two-week $481 million worldwide gross of “New Moon” has vaulted Summit Entertainment into the big leagues, but it also has created a high-class challenge for toppers Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.

They will likely have to cut a few big checks if they decided, as rumored, to split Stephenie Meyer’s final “Twilight” novel, “Breaking Dawn,” into two pictures. Sources said Summit has set Melissa Rosenberg — who wrote the first three films — to finish the series, but Summit has to clear several hurdles before Rosenberg learns how many more scripts she’ll write.

One of those hurdles is figuring out whether “New Moon” director Chris Weitz will respond favorably to overtures from the film company and the cast to shoot two more films, back to back. (Kate: PLEASE say yes Chris, I'm on my knees here )

Summit execs would not comment, but multiple sources said the company wants to go the two-film route, which means reopening negotiations and securing approval from the author. It also means making new deals with a principal cast that is only locked up for four films. If “Breaking Dawn” becomes two pictures, all of the key cast members will get fat raises, and the three principals — Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — could land paydays in the eight-figure range.

That’s what happened with key cast members when Warner Bros. extended its blockbuster “Harry Potter” franchise by turning J.K. Rowling’s last book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” into two films that will be released in November 2010 and July 2011. The global success of the franchise made the paydays worthwhile.

While the solution to most of Summit’s challenges will be determined by its willingness to open its wallet, the prospect of a Weitz return is more complicated.

While the solution to most of Summit’s challenges will be determined by its willingness to open its wallet, the prospect of a Weitz return is more complicated.

After feeling violated by New Line’s altering of his pic “The Golden Compass,” Weitz said he felt redeemed and reinvigorated by the success of “New Moon.” Yet, just before the film’s release, Weitz was steadfast that he would next direct “The Gardener,” a comparatively tiny film scripted by Eric Eason, with Paul Witt and Christian McLaughlin producing. At the time, he said Summit was in discussions to fund that film.

Summit hasn’t closed a deal for “The Gardener,” probably because the film company wants Weitz to postpone it and work on “Breaking Dawn” instead. Can Weitz resist the chance to finish a global franchise he helped build, even though it will mean more time away from his family for a long shoot? That’s the question the helmer and his reps will weigh shortly. Though Summit hasn’t officially made Weitz an offer, sources said the job is his if he wants it. After bringing in “New Moon” at around $50 million and keeping the cast happy, he’s the logical choice.

David Slade directed the next installment in the “Twilight” series, “Eclipse,” which bows June 20.

Kate: I'm not sure how I would feel about "Breaking Dawn" being split into two films. For me it was my least favourite book but I would LOVE to see Chris directing it. And please God if it goes ahead someone rewrite the fight scene because (for me) what was in the book is just not gonna work on film!

YESSS! For CW to BD!

NOOOO! For Melissa R (she should be fired!)

NOOOO! For 2 BDs!
(oh, pllllzz, why two more films? Only 'cause of that loooooong preparation to a boring battle that NEVER HAPPENED?)

Oh, okay, I got: MONEY is the answer...
boy, was I stupid?

phosphorus said...

Oh no, don't do it. Shooting Breaking Dawn is bad enough, splitting it into two is even worse.

JED66 said...

I think they just want to split it to bring in more money and keep Summit up there is lights for a little longer. If they did split it they'd have to screen it within a few months of each otherwise I might lose interest.

Kate - which fight scene? I can only think of Bella attacking Jacob?

Rhonda said...

I just want Rob's commitment to twilight to be over soon. One movie is all we need. Although, if it equates to a huge pay raise for Rob & Kristen I could get on board. But Rob is stretching playing 17 as it is. I do like the Chris Weitz talk, tho.

Maryann said...

I want them to finish the twilight saga and it is pretty obvious they will do that. I REALLY am with Kate on being on my knees begging Chris Weitz to do it.

But that the cast will join up for BD is pretty obvius IMO. Hell Peter Facinelli is so sure about this he's started an auction for charity to visit the set and stay in Vancouver for a few days! Yes you read it right. Looks like a given thing that they'll yet again shoot in Vancouver, (although not officially confirmed by Summit where the location will be) question now is just who will direct and WHEN they start filming...

Tejiri said...

they shouldn't make it two...what's the point of waiting for something that won't happen...the fight that never happened..

PrettyGyrl said...

Kate, how could Breaking Dawn be your least favorite?!?!

Btw, they need to do just one film and stop being scared. It's a thick book but all of that is not gonna translate to the screen.

phosphorus said...

@ PrettyGyrl: Because it isn't good. Breaking Dawn obviously did not get the editing it needed. S. Meyer lost it there, in fact, she started loosing it in Eclipse already.

Oh no, no nooo... I absolutely hated BD *dodging stones* please don't kill me yet, just let me explain -... To me it was like a huge betrayal of the saga, it was written like some very bad fanfiction gone really really wrong, with a terrible plot, terrible ideas. An epic fail. A bad melodrama. A betrayal of our beloved characters. Gore and horror and New Age-ish stuff about the genetic origins of vampires etc etc. Please. How can you make a good film -and even less two - out of a really bad book, even with the best cast and director in the world? I know the film will probably get greenlit but I'm already cringing at the idea. Oh no no please, let Rob and Kris say no and go on with great new projects. It's time for them to put an end to the beautiful Twilight adventure. Or else, let Melissa completely rewrite the BD plot - it can't be any worst and for once I will not resent anything she comes up with. Anyone agrees with me?

breaking dawn is basically boring and book jacob can be summerized in 10 minutes on screen, there is not much going on on breaking dawn, i mean not enough for 2 films any way!
as for chris, come on poeple why would you want him, i mean the best parts of breaking dawn are about the romance between edward and bella and to be honest i didn't like any kiss shot in new moon they all had strange angles and they looked more wierd than sexy for me the kiss in the bedroom in twilight was the best kiss i ever saw filmed on a movie, so i go with catherine really she was good at capturing the emotions and tension in twilight she was way way better than chris putting in mind her low budget, and she made the cullens glamerous shiny hot and inaccessible while chris just made them boring and horribly looking, i mean he used yellow contacts for crying out loud, the movie made money because we are loyal not because it was better in any way than twilight, catherine made me read the books, if i only saw new moon i would have never had the same feeling i had when i saw twilight, so No big No for chris and big No for 2 breaking dawn

I liked what CW did with New Moon and I dont understand why "The Golden Compass" was rated so badly. I watched it the other day for the first time and actually liked it a lot.

IF they do the fourth book they have to change the ending. 50+ vampires standing on a field talking is just not going to work. Its not working in the book and it certainly wont work on the big screen.

And I think this will be a first in the history of book adaptations but Breaking Dawn is the least favourite book in the series for most fans and I doubt that too many would be angry if they actually change the ending. Quite the opposide, they will be delighted.

@Rhonda

Im with you on that. I want Rob out of the series already and he is really stretching it with playing 17. To be honest, I never really bought the 17 thing. In the first movie he looked more like 19 and even more so in the second.

I just dont think chris really understood bella and edwards relationship, to the core. I think he only saw the superficial side of it.

@Maya2006

Book Jacob saved the whole book for me. If it wouldnt have been for his part I would have stoped reading. Moaning and moping Bella was going on my bloody nerves. It started in Eclipse and went well into BD.

Making BD exactly as the book would be a disaster, and really not the ending fans (not to mention the audience who isnt made of die-hards) would want for this series.

Imagine someone who hasnt read the books watching that movie. They would leave!!! First a uber cheesy wedding (I was cringing and swallowing back vomit through the entire first chapters), then a very anticlimatic scene ending in feathers (I dont want porn but please, FEATHERS?!), a sudden pregnancy that is biologically impossible (skin cant stretch that fast and Bellas skin would have not been able to take the sudden expansion). Sure, SM can make male Vampires potent (a little sexist in my opinion. If the femals cant why can the males?) but ignoring simple biological principles when it comes to humans is just wrong.

Lets move on, a bloody and gory birth, a perfect baby girl with teeth (yeah right!) and then. Why waste time, Bella is the perfect vampire. And its not stoping there, suddenly the Volturi are coming, they gather a small army of gifted Vampires (my spirits where rising at that point), they gather on the field and they ... talk! Bella of course saves the day because, lets face it. She is the fictional version of SM and at least in fiction she can make herself look great.

Now imagine THAT on screen. I would not go and see this if they have 10 Robert Pattinsons in there!!

Edwards and Bellas relationship IS superficial.

She falls in love with him because he is so "glorious; handsome; michelangelos David; beautiful" and Edward falls in love with Bella because she smells so mighty fine.
Bella is a perfect example of teenage infatuation and she drives me up the wall.

I dont blame the bad reviews for NM on CW, I blame the material he had to work with. There is only so much one can do and if the story is just not good enough even Steven Spielberg couldnt save the day.

BD should NOT be two books!!!! We need to get on Summit's case right now! No way! My least favorite too.
I don't mind all the vampire lore and incorporating it but TWO movies would be too drawn out!!!! And although Chris Weitz did a great job, I'm not ready to jump on the bandwagon to have him direct BD b/c there were some things that weren't quite right with NM
1. The eyes distracted me whenever they were on screen.
2. Alice's vision was laughable
3. The sexual tension between Edward & Bella from Twilight was gone. There was just something missing.....
4. Edward's & all the Cullens clothing were ugly. Fashionista Alice would not have worn what she was wearing in Italy!
I know I sound bad, but I did love everything else about the movie and Chris...
1. The whold block of wolf time in the middle was great...the action, Taylor's performance, the pack...he got the wolves right.
2. The volturi's were great too!
3. And let's face it, the movie was beautiful and grand...
but, I liked Catherines' indie feel so I'm still waiting to see David Slade's version because something tells me it's going to be closer to that....

Pandora!
SM does look great! Please, she has the most beautiful face! I love her mouth and teeth. And her hair is great! She only needs to lose some weight...

Bella is her alter-ego? I agree. Sure she is! And Edward is her most ardent sexual fantasie... (uuhhuu!). The sexual tension all the time through the books (it is exciting!), and then, well... after Bella is changed, the long nights in the cottage, Edward in no need of holding himself anymore (!!!), awake all night doing what? And with a kid that sleeps all night!!

Back to the subject, cv! Okay...
And, yep, SM lost her track in BD. The long preparation for the final "talk" was ridiculous. She could have ended the book in the middle and it would be great.
The editor should be fired with MR... :(

Can I just say that this IS NOT the Harry Potter series? The plot lines within the Twi-saga don't run deep enough for BD to be broken up into 2 films.

We should get the name of Summit's dealer... cause they are on some really high grade shizz!!

If Rob agrees to this fiasco... I'm gonna be really disappointed in him. Do the fourth film and get the hell out- ASAP!

@Crazy Vamp

Dont get me wrong. I wasnt attacking SM looks. Even her weight is of no importance to me.

I guess what I failed to say is that Bella is SM how she would like to be. She put all her morals, believes and ideals into that character and frankly, I was not impressed.

Everyone goes on about how they can put themselves into Bella's place and live the story through her.
I was unable to do that for the whole series. I was more like the BFF standing on the sideline telling her friend shes gone completly bonkers and shaking my head at her behaviour. XD

But since Ive seen the movies I have to confess Im Team Charlie. I just love, love loooove Billy Burke's portrayal of him. Hes the star of the series for me. *lol*

Xylem said...

If it was done right, two films could work:

Right being:

1. focus first film on pre-vamp Bella and events
2. Focus 2nd film on post-vamp Bella and events
3. The second film should be shot with the clarity and attention to detail that a new vamp sees. Think Lovely Bones and What dreams may come.
4. Bring in Masterful storyteller Peter Jackson to accomplish all of the above. Chris W. Was a great negotiator and and compromiser and it shows in New Moon. For BD to surpass the book (and it should) there must be a singular strong vision with an emphasis on story, not what Rob wants to wear or what Kristen is or isn't willing to do.
5. Lastly, none of this can happen with a crappy script. So Melissa Rossenberg has to go. I am sorry, but the person who brought us "butcrack Santa" just can not bring Vamp Bella to life...err to death.

crazy vamp said...

Pandora, I got that.
Yes, I think she described the ideal "Bella" that she wanted to be. And a Bella that had to hold herself, not because she was a mormon, but 'cause of an old fashioned vampire bf.

I did not put myself in her place either. Just couldn't. Rob is adorable, but Edward was a little freaky to me. So possessive, so demanding... :(

(BTW, I am not american: what does it mean to go bonkers???) 0-0

Oh, I love Billy Burke, too. He is precious.

I always thought that at least Rob has signed for THREE (not four) movies becuase at the time Summit didn't have the rights for BD and they weren't sure that they gonna make it at all. So now, after saga became such a big thing they have to negotiate for BD from scratch - with Rob and I'm pretty sure with the rest of main cast as well - regardless of will they make it into one or two movies. They would have to pay Rob and other much more now since it's impossible to switch actors at this point.

I am so torn over this subject.. Seriously torn.

I hated bd the first time I read it... Then read it again and loved it... but it was too much Jacob, Leah ( who cares) too many vamps coming to witness, and hated that e& b had a kid.

So, what did o love? The wedding, honeymoon and e&b after she becomes a vamp. If they make the movie just about that, one movie will be enough. If they make the whole book, it has to be two.
I don't want Rob locked in for another 2 yrs, but he'll do it because of his integrity to the series..

I love CW...but I agree the kiss in twilight was WAY hotter...

Dahlia said...

IMO BD shouldn't be made into two films. There is enough in the book that wouldn't translate well onto the screen (and that frankly, bored me a bit and seemed really long for no reason), that they could cut out and make it viable as one movie. BD is very long and alot of the stuff wouldn't be needed in the film for it to make sense.

I hope they finish the saga, as I'd like the happy ending for them all, but they should get it done ASAP. I think they will do it, even if it is expensive, as they have and will make enough money from the saga anyway!!

I think if there wasn't going to be a BD they would have said so already, but the sooner it is done the better, so that the cast can move on from it. I'm looking forward to see what films they do after Twilight is finito.

pandora- some aspects of their relationship are superficial and some others arent and THOSE are the ones he didnt get because they arent the most obvious...to me people who hate twilight can only see the things you mentioned and i can understand then why they would hate it...but i think that there is so much more beneath the surface...which catherine hardwick understood and translated to the screen really well
edward doenst like bella just for her smell if u dont believe me read midnight sun!
their relationship has so many more layers than what you get by the typical synopsis of the movie "bella is a teenager who falls in love with a nice hunky vampire"
their relaitonship in new mooon is so...flat i dont know
also one other reason why i think catherine hardwicks style fits so much better than CW is what d67 said...the indie feel twilight had...i think the twilight story is not one to be made into a big budget hollywood film because it takes away from the realism of the story...CW made new moon like he was remaking the golden compass with the same mentality, with a score that belonged in something like lord of the rings and just an overall feel of self importance that took soo much away from the personality the first movie had

i believe david slade would be great and he has the most action packed book really, iloved all his previous work especially hard candy, i believe if he made me watch 2 actors for about an hour and a half without being bored for a second, he would do a great job with eclipse,my only fear is that he concentrate on the battles and leave out the romance and the love triangle parts but form what we heard from the cast about the comedy between jacob and edward i have a feeling he would be fantastic

i recently posted about wanting to know how much they made in new moon and eclipse apparently no one knew if they also get percentage but in the article talking about getting 8 figures please tell me rob and kris are getting that now with almost 500 million in sales for new moon i dont mean 50 million but once i heard 12 for movie then percentage of sales which would be fine come on its these two who are making all your money for you

I think BD can be made into 2 films. But yes they need someone to light a fire under KS aZZ about looking a little less monotone and they HAVE to get rid of Melissa. Its not Chris W's fault to a point. Like the dialogue. However that reunion scene was way to fake for any chic to believe. come on gals you know how you act when you see your boo or in my case my chihuahua..My dog runs in circles. and his tail wags like crazy-it becomes invisible. I want to see Bella "turn". Want to see the feathers in the hair and the head board broken. theres so much detail that should not be left out. The volturi and wolves ,the other vampire clans. Totally enough material. We need an excellent screenwriter!!

The only reason to film BD is to salvage the plot and make something of the mess SM left us with as a finale. I hated BD, the entire premise was wrong.

I hated the fact that E&B had a child immediately and started acting like 35-year-olds. I hated Bella being the perfect newborn. I hated her wearing cocktail dresses and acting all lady-who-lunches. I hated Edward dumbed down and dull, doing nothing but mope around. I hated devil-spawn with the tailer-trash name and the teeth. I hated the paedophile overtones of imprinting on an infant (I mean, seriously?).

And I howled at:

"Goodbye Jacob, my brother...my son."

I mean, seriously????

I have to say I completely disagree with the views on Bella falling in love with Edward because he's gorgeous, or a hunky vampire…I think it's clearly explained in the books.
She was at first scared and intrigued by the fact that he hated her immediately, and then when he saves her from getting smashed by the van he becomes even more of an enigma. As she gets to know him, and learns his secret, she sees what a beautiful soul he has (even though he doesn't feel that way) and she sees how pure and good he is..she sees the man in him and not the monster. She also knows that he is not perfect.
Edward is drawn to her scent, but it's not what makes him fall in love..read midnight sun, it really explains a lot. Edward falls in love and starts to believe through her love that he's not the monster he always thought he was.
Bella is strong, and stronger than Edward in so many ways.
Vampire stories have always had the males being able to impregnate, that's nothing new. And Bella being able to have a baby growing that fast, with teeth…it's fantasy people! Don't read so much into it.
Anyway, as always, it's just my humble opinion…I see the books for what they are, and for what they mean to me.

@crazy vamp, I'm all for 2 movies (more Rob is NOT of the bad), but re the "battle that wasn't"---I'm thinking they'll spiff it up a bit ala NM/Volterra scene. Wicked fight scene that wasn't SM's version.

And they can take time to show the good stuff (you know what I mean; feathers!). Best place to break it is when newborn Bella Vamp opens her eyes at the dust motes! End Part 1/Open Part 2.

Yes, I've given this some serious thought. Drat, need more coffee.

SluttyPattz said...

I've said it before. If they make it into two films it could be BAD Really BAD, but on the other hand in new moon I felt the important parts to me were not there. Example( Edward asking for Bella to forgive him (I liked the book convo a lot better), meeting the cullens at the airport, the Edward/Charlie conversation when he brings her home after she was away for 3 days.) So I did feel there were parts of NM that were rushed in the movie.

BD was my least favorite book. The imprinting thing and Jacob's portion were not my thing.

If they do make it two movies I think they will play it up until the point where Bella changes. You can hear the heart monitor slowly fading, beats further apart each time, flatline, and BAM Bella's ride eyes. Part 1 over. Part 2 would be the intro to Reneesme and the volturi coming back, the wolfpack and cullens working together again and the ending would have to have a fight. There needs to be some casualties. I agree that I felt the chemistry more in twilight then in New Moon but I think CW did a good job.

I am like rpattzgirl on this one torn. I don't know. MR for me needs to be replaced - definitely.

The book Breaking Dawn was necessary to tie up loose ends, resolve many unresolved or unsettled issues, and give a final picture of what was not clear or known. True, the book needed editing; true, some 'solutions' (like imprinting) were really disturbingly problematic. But since the Summit goal seems to be (aside from amassing huge sums of money)to portray a saga that is loved by so many, I think they will seek to cover what is written.
Some ideas that would help: have a really good editor go through the book first. Then have a team of scriptwriters. I personally would get rid of MR, but from what I understand they already have her on board, so at least get a few more--and include some dedicated fans (I volunteer myself), feedback from more fans about what they feel must be included, and, at least as important, the main actors who have lived and breathed the characters.
Many of you seem to be hung up on the sex scenes, but I don't really think that is such a need to portray, other than that need always present for Bella and Edward in the previous books finally gets taken care.
Renesmee takes care of every lose end: Bella's concern for Jacob; Jacob's hang up on Bella; Bella needing to be turned as a way to 'save' her life and thus averting transgression of the treaty; animosity between the wolves and the vampires, and, finally, despite compaints here about the battle that never occurred, the need for the Volturi to destroy the Cullens. The unbattle also gave presentation of Bella's gifts, clarifying the 'glitch' in her brain, showing that she really WAS born to be a vampire and really WAS meant to be Edward's mate, and ultimately resolved the questions about the relationship, because it made very clear that, rather than the damsel in distress, Bella SAVED everyone.
I cannot think of what would be eliminated to still achieve the resolution of all of the issues, but if Summit's only concern is to rake in even more money from those of us devoted enough to watch it anyway, then they will not care about resolution for the saga. Despite missing dialogues that I felt would have enriched New Moon, I did love New Moon and thought CW did a beautiful job. I am not sophisticated about directors and what they do for films at all though, and I don't know if given the issues in BD if one director would be better than another.
For me, BD really hinges on the script, not the visual (except for the wedding, which I loved, and dealing with Renesmee).

solas as always you are brilliant.

Thanks-- unfortunately, also verbose. :-( Please forgive me for the long posts. I DO put thought into what I write. Maybe too much?

SluttyPattz said...

the long posts don't bug me. The first time I read BD I really hated it. It did however tie up all the loose ends, jacob's love, bella's change, bella's glitch, even charlie's love life.

The first time I read it I was disappointed with Jacob's chapters. Probably b/c I was anxious to know what was happening with Bella/Edward. I had to read the book a second and third time to really appreciate it. Eclipse is my favorite book from the series so I am anxious to see how David Slade portrays it.

I also hope they don't release as much preview stuff as they did with new moon. I couldn't refrain from watching it, but it did kind of kill the experience for me.

solas said...

I confess--when I first bought BD, I skipped through pages wanting to make sure they got to live happily ever after. Else, I would not want to read it :-)

solas said...

Because Rob is doing more movies soon, (not sure about Kristen), and thus will be out of Edward/bella character and thinking, I wish they could go through BD right now and highlight what they feel, as having lived those characters, ought to be in a script, and what should be crossed out. That would be a good foundation for what I hope will be the scriptwriters or scriptwriting team.

SluttyPattz said...

@Solas - LOL. My cousin did the same thing. I always feel guilty doing that, like I am cheating somehow. I look around and nervously skip chapters only to never have the guts to really skip ahead.

solas said...

teri--I also feel guilty as if cheating! I don't peak ahead with any other book, other than when I was 15 and read Atlas Shrugged for the first time, and I couldn't take John Galt's 30 page radio speech any more!!! I did NOT feel guilty about bypassing that after the first few pages!

NH said...

Why everyone here seems to not like BD? For me I think BD is my fav book because it shows how Bella becomes a vampire and learn how to hunt, pretending to be human from her dad (haha), and also to use her power to save her beloved. Doesn't it sounds interesting? And the covens!! Can't wait for them!!

By the way, I hope David Slade will be the director because as u all know, he's been directing 30 Days of Night before. It's exciting, dangerous, vicious, horror, and in vampire movies they should have that elements. But that's my opinion anyway. I'm not saying CW is not good here. He's been great and I love New Moon so much!! Cheers :)

solas said...

I missed, when listing the resolved issues, Charlie. Charlie would not have taken everything very well without Renesmee being there to charm him. Ans as you said, Teri, Charlie gets his own resolution in BD by no longer being alone, and by bonding with a woman who is also, by way of her children, in the world of the weird.

d67 said...

Solas...you've made some really good points about the loose ends...I think the key to BD will be making it concise. The book was WAY too long!!! And the battle that wasn't was incredibly anticlimactic! Also,Bella & Edward don't have to have a SEX scene but we definitely need more HEAT between them than we saw in NM. (no offense to CW, who I think is great, b/c if we are to believe he gave KS & RP as much leeway as they've said, then it's their fault as well). Breaking Dawn the movie MUST be better than Breaking Dawn the book to work on the screen!

@Maryann : are you it's Peter himself?

If they make the film (I'm not entirely sure I want them to) I would want to have Chris doing it. He knows how to, I'm sure, and they should let him do it his way! He knows what makes a good movie... Of course, I haven't seen wat Mr Slade has done for Eclipse, so I might change my mind! This is how I feel at this point in time. And the reason I don't look beyond the twilight-directors: they already know the material a bit...
@M: Peter Jackson might be able to work magic too, but he tends to get longwinded.
If they end it at the wedding, I will be happy. It's a good ending, let people see happily ever after or read the book if they want more. But I understand what Solas says: BD ties up loose ends.
I'll just wait and see and enjoy New Moon in the meantime. I'm sure there will be a resolution before Eclipse comes around!

Oh, and @Pandora: I'm with you on Team Charlie/Team Burke : he is amazing :)

@solas, re skipping to the end, I did the same thing! And excellent BD analysis, btw. Completely agree! Bella is the hero of the story and she was meant to be a Cullen (wink).

And my biggest shout out goes to Stephenie---so many stories/movies don't have the "happily ever after" ending. I want that FREAKING happy ever after, people! (Are you listening, Whedon?) I mean, really, so hard to do?

Thank you, Stephie! And way to go with the literal "ever after"---makes me laugh every time I think about it. "Every single day of forever." Sigh. She got that sooooo RIGHT!

I hate BD as well :/
It is simply a bad, I mean BAD book. I think my face literally went thru all colors of the rainbow when I was reading it- I was so appaled with the crappy ideas.

I can forgive SM the fairy-tale happy-ending, but the unbattle was a disaster. This kind of story (I mean a fantasy book that builds up the tension like that) requires an epic kind of fight, meanwhile we got nothing. And this nothing is even less acceptable in a movie, it just won't work, because the plotline will collapse.

To be honest, my idea after reading those 4 books is that SM just couldn't construct any good battle scenes because of her limited writing skills- and she knew that, so she avoided them at any cost. I know that we see the fight between Victoria & Edward in Eclipse, but it's chaotic & poorly described in my opinion. Plus, we have also very vague idea of what happened between Cullens, warewolves & the newborns. In New Moon & Breaking Dawn we get no fight, even though the plot there cried for it. I think SM was aware that this kind of scenes should be carefully planned & then written skilfully- I mean, at least she's an experienced reader, so she knows that this thing can't be bungled.

Well, this is just my humble opinion ;)

No ! to Chris Weitz. If Breaking Dawn ever gets done the director needs to be a woman to capture again the strong emotional part of the relationship between Edward and Bella. I don't think a man can't really tap into that, something that is so feminine.
I don't know how Eclipse se will look in that aspect.
But I wasn't at all inspired with the last scenes between Bella and Edward in New Moon. It didn't translate there how Bella was so happy but at the same time fearful that was all a dream. And Edward didn't show how guilty he felt and how sure he was he would never leave Bella again.
Sorry, Chris Weitz, you did a great job with the rest of the movie, but the emotional part between Edward and Bella wasn't there and this is very important for Breaking Dawn.
So, Summit please if you ever decide to film Breaking Dawn, please consider a woman director again!

Re skipping ahead to see how it ends---it's not cheating. I think it helps make an informed decision on whether to spend valuable time on something.

(Shudder) Still have a nasty taste in my mouth, years later, from a craptastic piece of ff that I didn't scope out ahead---wasted a day reading something that ended so "kill me now/depressing" badly. Never again. And I want that day back.

I get angst-loving people and all, but damn, I still want sunlight after all that gloom. Hence, the aforementioned "cheating".

Speaking of looking ahead, we're going to need a spoiler spot for Remember Me. Or is it too early? (Gwen does NOT peek at Christmas presents under the tree. She has SOME control.)

Am reading and processing the comments, and have a bit more to say (forgive me!).
I did not feel the need for an actual battle at the end of BD, especially because I thought it left room for a sequel where the Volturi strike back, especially considering Edward's comment about Volturi planning to take them off one by one.
However, if there is definitely not going to be a book sequel (which I would rather there not be because I like happy endings and I don't even want to deal with THINKING about Jacob being with Renesmee in the future--ick ick ick a thousand nails on the chalkboard ick!!!!) then there could be a change at the end, for a movie, where there IS a battle; after Bella shields everyone, they go for the kill and eliminate the Volturi threat once and for all. (And then maybe the Cullens can take over ruling the vampire world).

As for new Moon, I just thought it was beautiful and I keep going back to see it, although I missed exactly what you, J said: Bella fearful Edward would leave again, not so sure of his love until she has her epiphany; Edward horrified with guilt at the danger and harm his well-meant misguided decision brought upon Bella, and determined to protect her from any pain ever again. I don't blame Chris for this hole, but rather the script, which I haven't seen. Perhaps it was in there and left out? Don't know how to tell. But I just thought the movie itself was so beautiful, so well acted, and I hope Eclipse will be at least so worth seeing, and that the script will be better.

Didn’t like BDawn on the first read, as in WTF? However, I gave it another chance and now actually have some admiration for Stephenie’s guts in taking all thematic roads to their logical outcomes, as others have outlined, given what was developed through the other books. I didn’t see it coming, I have to say. Lol I think the only character who gets a little short-changed is Edward, but his resolution was going to be fairly straightforward. I still want to see his ‘joy’ in the wedding scene. They’ll ramp up the action somewhat for the final confrontation, I’m sure.

@Solas: laughing at your by-passing in Rand. Everyone goes through a Rand phase but it’s not necessary to linger on every page, eh? :)

solas said...

A--to this day, when I write, I ask people critiquing/ reviewing my writing if I sound too AynRand/John Galt hit -you-ever-the head-speech-y. ;-)

solas said...

A--I think 'lingered' on every page of Fountainhead, but then, I was only 15. :-)

AP said...

@Solas: Ah, but that lingering had little to do with her philosophy, if I'm not mistaken, and a lot to do with why some might like Rob to play the role. lol
If you start talking about Rob as an organism using his mind to do what he must for his survival I will give a discreet cough. As in *discreet cough.* It’ll be our Galtian code. ;)

I have lots of speculations on whether BD will become two films or remain one, but shall refrain from issuing more bs at this point. Timing, as they say, is everything.

solas said...

LOL A!!! You are not mistaken!!!!
SOME (Discreet cough, yes indeedy) certainly WOULD like to see Rob play Roarke/Galt.

I don't find the logic in making Breaking Dawn into two books, is it because there were two books coming from a different perspective there? (one from Jacob and two from Bella)..

I think Eclipse could have been longer but Breaking Dawn?? I mean they fast-forward scenes from New Moon they could also do that in BD.And guys does anyone here have any idea how they're gonna portray Renesmee? It would look awful if she was a baby-CGI..don't you think so?

Unknown said...

@ Maya - I agree with you, as I said about New Moon it was visually imroved but not emotionally compelling I didn't even feel the love just the suspense when Edward finally pop the question and it was because it was Rob that was asking.

Don't misunderstand I love what Chris has done to the film, the improved parts were the obvious, like FX, sparkles, vampire looks but heck the feel was not there.

Unknown said...

I mean improved..(heck what's wrong with my spelling today!?)

Unknown said...

@crazyvamp - I agree I actually thought of that the first time I read the book, since she looks and acts similar to Bella
- she has brown hair
- she has brown eyes
- she loves reading books specially Jane Austen
- SM said that she was like Edward because he thinks he sees the world differently but that's actually who Bella is

Rob already acknowledged this on one of his interviews (i think), he said that he thinks SM projected her frustration and created a character out of it. I think he did say that it was like a badly written fanfiction (I think he might be referring to BD)

jc(britlover) said...

Please-ONE movie for BD. I even think the book can be condensed easier than NM. Once again I agree w/ Rpattzgirl totally on the Bella/Edward love angle. I was a huge Harry Potter fan, but am totally bummed about the two-movie split for the last HP book-almost to the point that I've lost interest. (I'd never lose interest in Twilight Saga). Just sayin'. At any rate, how long can we expect BD to be dragged out. Make one movie to satisfy us die hards, so we can once and for all file away the DVD's with our Saga books and be able to relive Edward through Rob to our heart's content. Two movies will take too damn long. Enough already!!!! I don't want to draw retirement the same day I buy part 2 of BD!!!!

i know what you mean about the chemistry in new moon not being there as much as twilight it reminds me of a episode of friends chandelor was dating some theater chick afraid she was cheating ross said if there is now chemistry there something going on behind the scenes i think twilight they were not as close but new moon who knows what was going on between them and i think they were being careful not to look like we do this normally

i meant to say no chemistry not now reread everything i need to remember

Last word? I think BD was boring..I think all of the romance was gone...I think the love/honeymoon scene sucked (why even put it in there really?)...I think the pregnancy thing was gross and lame....I think Jacob's imprinting on the baby was sick...I think the "let's talk, not fight, I'll put a bubble over you to protect you" scene was beyond dumb....The only good thing about BD was the description of Bella becoming a vampire..the actual change. That was cool. Otherwise, the whole thing was either too weird for words or down right boring. All that crap with the lawyer and having dinner with the lawyer...If they wanted to make BD interesting they should just have Tim Burton do a whole let's get weird/let's get whacky....let's go a little beserk with it. At least he could make something out of it.

jc(britlover) said...

Very interesting comments. Also agree w/d67 on list of things not quite right w/NM. Where was the romance in NM? I personally missed not seeing Edward caressing Bella's face in Italy, before and after the Volturi encounter and on the entire trip home to Forks. I missed Bella letting Charlie know that Edward would be where she was and I missed Bella's epiphany on the way to the Cullen's for the big vote. There was so much Jacob, that I totally craved those few Edward scenes and we really didn't get much. However, I still loved the movie..rpattzgirl-hell yeah, that kiss in Twilight was spot on!

gracefulgrace said...

Maya2006,
I totally agree with you Chris (although great at directing the acting and special effects) failed to capture any emotion or tenderness the way Catherine did. The kisses where filmed terribly. Catherine captured the kisses and emotion that took my breath away.

I loved Breaking Dawn and would love it to be made into two movies. The book was long and packed, to fit in all it to one movie would be a disaster, totally spoiling the book. in certainly wouldn't stay true to the source.
I also would love there to be 5 movies to have in my life time collection. Remember this is the one and only chance to ever see this characters on screen again or Rob in this roll. I want as much as I can get.
I'm looking forward to seeing Rob in other rolls like Remember Me. But I will miss Rob as Edward.

solas said...

Not much chance for the chemistry in New Moon, since Bella and Edward were hardly together, and I saw no chemistry between Bella and Jacob, thank G-d. huh--I loved the kisses in New Moon.

Seriously in my humble opinion, BD the book could have been severely edited anyway... and i don't see it being that much longer than Eclipse which is only one movie....I already think Rob is looking different, not uglier...just different...I want them out now...and quicker...one movie will ensure a quicker release.

Just for fun: as BD is inevitable, would like Kathyrn Bigelow to do it - either one. "Hurt Locker" will prob be up for best pic, director at Oscars, so she's high profile. That's Summit-backed so they have relationship. She showed with "Weight of Water" that she can handle lit adaptation and..um...intense emotion, and can certainly do action. And I'm all for promoting more women at the helm. Of course, can't see she'd do it...lol, but I can wish..
