Chris Weitz talks about Robert Pattinson and New Moon with a Lucky Contest Winner

JennyBrutal was lucky enough to win the @Twilight Sweeps Contest and was able to talk with Chris Weitz on the phone. Below are the questions about Rob and Edward - you can read the full interview HERE.

I know Edward's car is now a dark silver, but was there any reason for the change?

Availability. Volvo wanted to introduce a new car into the series, instead of the older model. So they provided a newer model, brown Volvo. Immediately we knew it had to be repainted, and chose a dark, non-shiny, black colour. It added more to the first Edward scene in the movie, the feeling is upbeat but the colour of the vehicle adds to the danger lurking.

I really enjoyed the added scene with Victoria swimming towards Bella. (The book hints to the orange colour the water was reflecting, in a later revelation by Bella.) How did this scene come to be?

Well, the orange coloured water wouldn't have looked right in the scene so we put her in the water visibly. That scene was difficult because we wanted to film her swimming towards Bella but it had to be at a distance. If it wasn't at a distance fans would wonder why Victoria didn't just get her in that short scene, but at the same time it had to feel threatening. That was all shot in Vancouver in a swimming pool, we had the actors underwater with four or five frog men with air tubes for security purposes. We also had green screens in the water surrounding the actors so we could CGI in all the particals in the water. Theres actually a program to add in all of the floating debris and colour differences in the water after filming. Kristen had a cold at the time and was scared of drowning. We had to force her to stay in the water [laughter] But Rob was more comfortable in the water, hes had to shoot underwater scenes in the past. [Harry Potter]

Were there any scenes that you would have loved to see in the film but never made the final cut?

Yes, one scene. Theres a scene with a motorcycle crash that gives more of a sense of danger. The reason why it didn't make the final cut was because of weather reasons, it was just too sunny to be considered Forks. The DVD will include that scene as well as extended scenes. Some of the extended scenes include more of Edward's visit to the Volturi concerning his immortality and more from the scene between Carlisle and Bella. [when he was stitching Bella up.] In one of the early drafts of the script this scene was not in the movie. Immediately I knew that had to change, it was essential to the story line.

I don't have any love for Melissa Rosenberg myself. I can't understand how she can write something as good as Dexter, & yet continually screw up the Twilight movies.

Haha! Chris dresses like Rob! They should be besties.

"Little Ashes" has been nominated for a GLAAD award! Yea, for Rob and company! I hope he is able to attend with Kristen!

I wish that Charlie's "welcome" to Edward from Italy and Edward's rage in the vote scene had made the final cut (Edward's lines in that scene were so dull and whiny I would have gladly throttled Melissa Rosenberg, had I had her in my hands... and not for the first time!)... I was so looking forward to that :(.

And hearing Edward quote Romeo in the reunion scene and say "Carlisle was right" :(.

Those are my only gripes over an otherwise great job.

OK, another, minor one: why of all the versions of Romeo and Juliet ever made, they had to pick the worst, most boring one (which, ay me, I unfortunately own) to show in class? Why, oh, why didn't they pick Zeffirelli's (1968)??? I'm hoping to hear some day that there *was* a valid reason.

nicole87: "and once again Melissa Rosenberg is an idiot, why r they paying her again?"

Word! Although I grant that she seems to have made a slightly bigger effort to at least stick to most of the storyline and words than with Twilight, this time.

Marna: re. Dexter, my thoughts exactly. It just seems like two completely different people!

CW dresses like some Italians I know... especially when he wears his primary/secondary coloured pants :)

Am I alone in my love for men in pants of primary/secondary colours??

God, I love Chris Weitz!!

I really hope that the dream with the bed and a really scary looking Edward shows up in the deleted scenes...I'm quite curious about that one! I was looking forward to it when the pictures came out and then it wasn't in the movie.

And I'm so gonna wear out the beginning of the dvd with "The Strut"!! I swear, I puddled everytime I saw it in the theatre...it's so much better when it's bigger!! (evil grin...yeah, that's right...I said it! insert NB badge!)

jc(britlover) said...

@Leslie
You are so right about "The Strut"!! I also hate the downsize from theater screen to dvd. Takes forever to get used to, there's just no comparison to the larger than life theater ( I mean bigger IS better-lol). I need a NB badge!!!!!

LeslieHeartsRob said...

@jc

Honey...you've got one!! Remember we're the police squad for the NBFRC!!

He rocks the cardy!

Kat, LMAO at PeePaw Edward. That never fails to crack me up. I too want to see the scene where Edward brings Bella home and Charlie flips out. Grrr. It better be there, I thought I saw a pic of Alice and Edward with Charlie at the door. I blamed CH as much as MR for twilight when the DVD came out- I mean, WTF would you delete "I couldn't live with myself if I ever hurt you, you don't know how it's tortured me" and "I'd rather die than stay away from you"?????????? Or the 30 seconds of him saying your father thinks you should go to an all girl's school?? Sigh. I'm really looking forward to this DVD, so I can wear out the beginning and end (yes, especially the f*ckhawt strut)!

RTP_KJS_Lover said...

@LHR - I am sure that I'm lame for asking, but what is a NB badge? I can't figure it out.

"The Strut" with Monsters playing in the background and when he looks off to the side momentarily, dude, that makes me puddle. =)

@CullenLover07

NB is short for the Naughty Bitches for Rob Club...there was this one very naughty night on here and I think that RPG was the one that said something about it...the rest is history.

Awww...memories...that was a good night!!

RTP_KJS_Lover said...

@LHR - Aw! Thanks! Um, don't know if there is a membership fee or a membership committee. And I know I am new to Robsessed, but I have many naughty, naughty thoughts about Rob. If you are accepting new members, I would very much like to join.

There has to be penis joke in there somewhere.

Gotta go get ready for work, have a Roblicious day!

LeslieHeartsRob said...

@RPG - Yeah...I missed the most recent COTC discussion...but I read through it all and ya'll were cracking me up!! And I like this idea of a Naughty Room!! Go NBs and RKs!!!!!

HeneciaD said...

@leslie yeah he can look at me like that whenever he wants but what do you mean with naughty room

skorpia said...

Great Questions!! I was wondering about why couldnt Victoria get to her faster with her vampire speed-ah well. I agree the screenwriter is an idiot. They should do a poll and let the fans decide each week what works and save themselves the backlash. I still cant believe how lacking the reunion scene was. what a c*cktease. I would have been clinging to him and touching his face, afraid it was my (bellas)ion ..but thats just me:)

skorpia said...

I meant my imagination (bellas). hey! I got a very dirty mind myself-where do I sign up for the NB's and how the hell did i miss it??:(

HeneciaD said...

skorpia me too I have a really dirty mind and I want to sing up too I hope that we didnt miss it can someone tell

LeslieHeartsRob said...

Don't worry girls...you didn't miss anything. Usually when there are some really good pictures...or any kind of RobPorn, there is a NBFRC meeting that eventually happens...you'll see one eventually!!

HeneciaD said...

whats the full of NBFRC and when we will see it

I actually like Melissa Rosenberg. I adored Twilight and it was because of the film that I became a fan of the books. I also think she did a good job with NM. I can appreciate how difficult it is to adapt a book to the screen. When you write, your palate is your imagination. With a film, there are a lot of constraints, everything from budgets, running times, issues with location, up tight producers, studio pressure, actors, Murphy's law definitely applies. Mulitiply these factors with fan expectations and it gets crazy. Despite all of this, both movies have surpassed a billion worldwide, so MR must be doing something right. Just sayin...

skorpia said...

I think Missy (MR)couldve let some more dialogue in. The heavy stuff. An extra minute or so wouldnt have hurt. That reunion scene was way too short and it just left me thinkn "WTF was that?" Of course ROb was great. Im just saying in regards to the emotional content of it. I couldnt wait for Edward to see Bella. I understand where your coming from though. Can I get an AMEN on ROb taking off his shirt?! Aye Dios Mio!

I loved New Moon regardlessly, although the movies are never as good as the books are, and I understand that it's almost impossible to do.
But I missed one scene that IMO was quite important, when Edward and Bella are back from Italy at Charlie's place and she wakens...In the book it took her a while to belive that she wasn't dreaming, that Edward was really there with her. She thought he could disappear all of a sudden. That was the moment when he finally realized how hard she suffered.
I don't think they showed the intensity of that scene on the movie and I really missed it.
I missed the silver Volvo too..I mean, in the book it stays in the family until the end. =)
And I loved the soundtrack. Grizzly bear rules!

I want do buy New Moon`s DVD because with so many deleted scenes perhaps I am going to see a better movie than I saw at the cinema.

Not sure if Chris is a genius. To me NM proves otherwise.

lallieb said...

Re. Melissa Rosenberg, ITA with comments. Been saying it for a while, just not right! First time seeing others agree. CW was stuck with her (thanks, Scummit!). Not excusing the mistakes made in NM, and his control. Love him, but as someone else here said: could have been shorter time spent on earlier scenes and longer on others (the Volturi) would have been more satisfying. Was MR responsible for that dreadful future scene?

Raven said...

Yeah, too bad CW didn't realize it was also essential to have the Edward and Bella reunion scenes be emotional, longer, and include key lines of dialogue. I was stunned to see the scenes were almost like an after thought instead of an important part of the movie. Just couldn't believe Edward's line "Before you Bella, my life was like a moonless night..." was LEFT OUT! Melissa Rosenberg has no clue about the lines of dialogue in these books that fans love. I just read the leaked Eclipse script and she's screwed it up, too by watering down the Edward/Bella relationship. She and scummit are totally ruining this beautiful franchise. I'll Melissa will write Breaking Dawn and having taycob marry Bella and they'll have twins! Wouldn't surprise me in the least!
