Emilie de Ravin: I Had Instant Chemistry with Robert Pattinson

From MTV.com:

2010 is going to be a straight-up bonkers year for Emilie de Ravin. The stunning 28-year-old Australian returns in February to "Lost" for the show's final season, tying together five years of twists, turns and WTF moments. Next month, she'll appear in "Remember Me" as the love interest of a guy named Robert Pattinson, who we guess is kind of a big deal. And by big deal, we mean the Bella Swan-wooing, tween-mind-occupying Hollywood heartthrob of the moment. So, Miss de Ravin, no pressure, OK?

But as the actress made clear in an interview with MTV News, she's taking it all in stride. For playing it so cool, and for the stellar year she's about to have, we're honoring de Ravin as one of our 10 to Watch in 2010 — the folks in the movie industry we expect big things from in the next 12 months. In a wide-ranging conversation, de Ravin gave us tantalizing hints about "Lost," described dealing with the insane attention surrounding "Remember Me" and said she instantly connected with Pattinson when the pair first met.

MTV: You're returning to a TV show everyone is obsessed with, you're co-starring opposite one of the biggest actors on the planet — does 2010 feel like it's going to be a really big year for you?

Emilie de Ravin: Yeah, I'm insanely excited. The show's been fantastic, and I had season five off, so I had the opportunity to do some other projects, including "Remember Me." Being surrounded by all these talented groups of people inspires you so much. And with the show ending, it's bittersweet — sad, but fantastic they're ending on a high note. You don't want to be the last ones left at the party!

MTV: So how did "Remember Me" come your way? Did you have to read with Rob?

De Ravin: They'd been looking to cast my role for a while, looking at a lot of different girls. I read the script three weeks before they started shooting. I flew to New York to test with Rob and we immediately got along and had instant great chemistry, which is not an easy thing to come by. Obviously you're acting, but you want to have that connection with somebody. We had it. And I was thrown into a wardrobe fitting that same day.

MTV: Before you were cast, did you have a sense of all the craziness that surrounds Rob everywhere he goes?

De Ravin: I suppose I did, but it was not something I thought about until I got to set that first day and was like, "Ooooh, OK." Probably 90 percent of the film we shot on location, mainly in Manhattan, and having the paparazzi and fans coming to watch, it adds, um, another element. You have to focus much more.

MTV: Was it just nuts?

De Ravin: There were a lot of crazy moments where you're filming on location and you're waiting for people to get out of the shot. People don't want to move. Rob and I would laugh about that. There was a scene where we're on a date at a carnival, and it was very exposed to media, paparazzi and fans. We were rehearsing, and you become so self-conscious of people watching you, and we both stopped and looked at each other and were like, "Wait, what are we doing?" You're taken out of your work mentality with hundreds of people watching you when you're just trying to figure out your scene.

MTV: What was your relationship with Rob like off-camera?

De Ravin: It was so great being able to work with someone you immediately get along with and is incredibly talented and is driven to make the film as good as we can. Having someone you can go and talk with about a scene, and it's all very casual and easy, that made filming such a delight — having a friendship level and a commitment to the script. The way Rob and I developed our relationship onscreen was very natural, and just seeing what happened with scenes, what happens in the moment.

MTV: But you're telling me you guys didn't watch "Twilight" together in your trailer every day?

De Ravin: No! I hadn't seen the films prior to shooting. They're great. They're such a different genre to this film. "Twilight" and "Remember Me" couldn't be more different. Not so many similarities between Edward Cullen and Tyler.

MTV: So you play Ally, a college student who falls for Pattinson's Tyler. Tell me a bit about the relationship between these two characters.

De Ravin: The relationship between Ally and Tyler is so beautifully developed. It's such an honest, organic, real love story. It's not your typical Hollywood love story. Neither one of them were really looking for it, but it just happened. Obviously there's a physical attraction, but also that thing you can't put into words. They're brought together in very random circumstances. It's not love at first sight, but they're intrigued at first sight. They've both had major family tragedies that, prior to their relationship, have closed them off, thinking no one can understand the way they really feel. They just get each other. There's no false performance. It's all open and who they are. That's sometimes beautiful and sometimes ugly and sometimes frustrating, but it's all on the table.

You can read the rest of the interview where she talks about Lost over at MTV.com :)

1-"...Bella Swan-wooing, tween-mind-occupying Hollywood heartthrob of the moment..." . Once again, almost totally clueless.

2- I wonder to what extent it was necessary to bring up the 'chemistry' issue, since everyone and her mother knows the initial (and ongoing) chemistry between Rob and Kristen, and Summit needing to stick de Ravin in there? To assert something as possibly real for this movie, as well?

I am thrilled she speaks of him so highly. They say that you can tell the true character of a person by what their co-workers tell you. I have only heard good about him.

She seems very sweet. Glad they had good chemistry, that will help the movie do well.

I can't wait to see it!

everyone said it already, but LMAO at your tag! so true.

It probably helps them to get into character, but I wish that actors could do movies using their natural accents! Everyone knows we want Rob to sound like Rob, and Emilie has a lovely accent, but the way she pronouces words as her character bug me! I cringe everytime I she says "I always eat my dessert 'firshet'".

I know, it's dumb to focus on that. The drought makes me think about dumb stuff. ;) We get to see him on Friday, right? woot!

On the other hand, this day may never come because Rob is probably able to create chemistry with a lamppost.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Rob have a hand in casting her? And if so, then coupled with his chores in Cannes (helping to secure distribution rights), is what got him that 'executive producer' credit. As for Emilie...

She seems like a lovely girl and as for 'chemistry'...I love the 'trash can' reference but I've always held with...'you could pair that boy up with a potted plant and I'd still end up having to change me panties.' Well. It's true.

And I think some need to get used to the idea that he simply cannot make all of his films with Kristen and that yes, he will have 'chemistry' with other actresses. He better. And having chemistry with someone onscreen usually means you have it with them off screen too, but...that doesn't mean you're going to end up sleeping with them. I'm sure he'll be tempted through the years and in all probability (if he's not in a committed relationship), will indulge from time to time. But he's not an animal and if he is in a committed relationship, then I think he's capbable of keeping his zipper zipped. He better. Or he won't maintain a committed relationship (and eventually a marriage) for long.

so let's see Kristen felt chemistry for Rob and Rob got the part...

rob felt chemistry with Emilie and she got the part...

they are actors and they are making movies, they need to feel comfortable with who they are working with. love interest with kristen didn't come about til after the second movie (oops alleged love interest). emilie and rob only made one movie, now if they start making more movies together then maybe i would think differently. can you imagine every movie he makes, his leading lady is going to be scrutinized. by the way so looking forward to seeing rob in RM.

Yeah I hated Tess in Roswell as well, but I'm REALLY happy to see Rob on screen with a different girl! And I feel that I'm going to like her as Ally! :)

AP said...

Whatever other kind of 'chemistry' Rob and Emilie had/have, I'm glad it happened at the reading. When that moment of connection occurs, and it doesn't always have to be sexual, it means you know you are in the moment together, and can build on that throughout the production. It's a godsend. No wonder she was rushed to wardrobe...

annieEvilRobPornPusher said...

there are so many beautiful people but not every one has the charisma or "charismatic sexuality" that Robert has. zac efron for example is very beautiful but he can't come near to the (sexual)power that Rob has. He maybe doesn't have chemistry with everyone but everyone and everything has chemistry with him ;)It's just in his nature.

And I have to agree with LHR:

FUCK I LOVE THIS MAN(too)

BTW, I don't care who playing opposite him because I watch him most of the time....

Fae007 said...

Samantha- I hated her too back then. And so did most people. But that just shows how brilliant of a job she really did playing Tess.

The girl is an actress doing her job and we don't know her personally to hate on her still. She seems like a cool and sweet person.

Well y'all are forgetting about his co-star in How To Be. If I remember correctly she ended up not liking him too much. But yeah for Emile to get the role that quick and go straight to wardrobe it says they connected on the right level. And there are times that co-stars have great chemistry onscreen but hate each other off-screen.

buffy said...

The “we had instant great chemistry” statement is typical HW. She made it very clear that they have a professional onscreen relationship (and nothing else): “make the film as good as we can, talk with about a scene, ….having a friendship level and a commitment to the script. …The way Rob and I developed our relationship onscreen was very natural…” I saw her in interviews and she seems to be a nice Aussie girl and the film is for sure a step in her career.

But she seems not at all interested in any “Roblie-rumors”. This would be a ridiculous PR-stunt anyway, because the relationship between Rob and Kristen (or relationship-rumors if you prefer it) heated up after filming RM (and Rob and Emelie never seen offscreen together).

This is the beginning of the Summit Remember Me promo. How will Summit handle this?
- They want as many Rob-and Twifans see the RM. But a lot of fans have problems to switch to a new “dream-couple” after 2 years Twilight (which is only natural).
- They have to push the Ally/Tyler (Rob/Emilie)train for RM, but it is risky.
- Because as you can see HSX predicts :The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – H$279.67 and Remember Me only – H$37.73!!!
- Eclipse is their cash-cow!!! PR begins just 2 month (or even weeks after) RM release.
- And they already pushed hard the Bella/Jacob (Kristen/Taylor) relationship and not Edward/Bella what the story is all about.
- And Kristen and Robert are now “cryptical avoiding any chemistry-relationship questions” and keeping a distance between them (at least in front cameras)They seem happy to push it to Taylor and have not to sing the "we are the dream couple" song.

So what happens with Eclipse then? Action movie? Are the fans buying this?
What happens to the career of the bankable “rising stars” if Eclipse fails?
Interesting to watch.
What are your thoughts?

I just wanted to drop in to say that my comment: Rob would have chemistry with a trash can was in no way intended as an insult towards Emilie.

Well, I hope he has chemistry with someone other than KStew if he wants to work...EDR is adorable but I was surprised at this casting and it was sooo down to the wire. Since we are rooting for Rob and this film I've felt the pressure on him. I've been pleasantly surprised from what little we've seen in the trailer - they are pretty adorable together and def have "chemistry." I liked the way she described it (not a tangible thing) and the way she talks about Rob. It is as much about how Rob feels with her. I think he had a lot of say about who was cast so of course he's smart to pick someone that he feels comfortable and connected with.

I liked this interview, and I have no doubt that Robert and her will have great chemistry in the movie, I mean you can feel the chemistry between them in the stills and they're only pictures, so I can only anticipate how palpable their chemistry will be in the movie.

Like I said I am really looking forward to this movie, and I hope that it's storyline is as good as the trailers and stills make it out to be!

Another interesting thing about Rob and his leading ladies and that is...

Right out of the gate, Hollywood is casting him opposite actresses older than him; Emilie (5 yrs. older), Christina (6 yrs. older), Uma (16 yrs. older) and Kristen (26 yrs. older). And why is that?Because of his sexual maturity. Hollywood has the confidence in him that he can hold the screen with these older actresses.

When Mel Gibson and Kevin Costner first started their careers (and they were 5 to 10 yrs. older than Rob when their stardom hit), in the early years they were almost exclusively cast opposite actresses that were older than them (Sigourney Weaver, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Sissy Spacek, etc.)

I wouldn't be surprised in future to see Rob starring opposite the likes of Kate Winslet or Marion Cottiard, to name just two (and both in their 30's). A couple of actresses of his own generation I would really love to see him work with though are, Kiera Knightley and Ellen Page.

But hell. I could even see him in a true May/December romance with Annette Bening AND she's 28 yrs. older than him.

A greater compliment Hollywood couldn't pay him to think that he is mature enough that can hold his own on screen with woman who are older than him. It means that they don't see him as a kid, but rather, as a man.

And FUCK! Do I love that man.

I have nothing against Emilie. I have never seen her before so obvioulsy I have never seen the show to which she and some of you refer. To me, Emilie looks much older than Rob. I have no idea what kind of chemistry they will exhibit yet; will wait to see the film.

As for the other older women:
I know nothing of how Hollywood pairs male stars with older women or for whatever reason, but the female characters are simply older in Bel Ami, so it makes sense there. And Rob is choosing scripts he wants, not what HOllywood has confidence he can do or what they want him to do; could be he wants to work with older women, or could be the scripts with older women are more interesting to himself.

nikola6 said...

Solas...

It's late and so I doubt you'll see and by tomorrow this thread will already be swallowed up, but I did want to respond to you on the off chance that you might see it.

Rob can want all he wants in terms of scripts and leading ladies, etc., however, he doesn't have the power to make it happen. Only the studio does. For instance, Catharine Hardwicke did not hire him for Twilight. Summit did. And if Summit and whoever is producing Bel Ami did not think that he was mature enough to hold his own against older actresses, then they would not cast him opposite them. Studios have the final say in EVERYTHING. And Rob won't be until he's running his own production company. Yes, he has some say, but not the final word. I know these things because my parents were in the business, I was born and raised in Hollywood and grew up in show business. I'm certainly not an expert, but I know just a bit more than the average fan. Just a bit. And trust me on this one...

Hollywood casts younger actors against older actresses only if they think those actors have the sexual maturity to hold their own against those older women.

You've seen Zak Effron and Michael Angarano(sp?) and Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick and Shia LaBeauf and Kellen Lutz and Jackson Rathbone and Taylor Lautner; all actors in their early 20's (and in Taylor's case, still a teenager). Could you honestly see any of them paired up with actresses 15 to 30 years older than them and pulling it off with any credibility? I don't. To me they would look like little boys trying to play grownup. As for the female characters in Bel Ami...

We don't know how old Georges is but assume that when the story begins, he is in his early 20's.

Clotilde is described a young woman. Yes, she has a little daughter, but women then were often married at 16-17 and mothers at 18, so I assume that she was somewhere near Georges age herself. Christina Ricci who is portraying her, is six years older than Rob.

Madeline is assumed to be older than Georges, but as she is also described as a young woman, I'm guessing not by much. However, Uma Thurman is 16 years older than Rob and in no way is Madeline that much older than Georges.

Madame Walter is of course much older than Georges and so the casting of KST is pretty darn accurate.

Ally in Remember Me. She is 19 years old playing opposite Tyler who turns 22 during the story. So why didn't they find another teenager for Rob to play opposite instead of casting him with an actress who is now 28 years old. Nearly 10 years older than the character she is playing. I'll tell you why...

You cast Rob opposite teenage girls (Dakota Fanning, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus) and it's gonna look weird because even though he is only a few years older than them, he looks a helluva lot older.
This is why he is being cast opposite older actresses and I'm guessing will continue to be throughout his twenties.

Yeah, Kristen is younger, but she's quite mature beyond her years both in looks and additude. You could cast her as young mother in her mid twenties tomorrow and it would be believeable. Besides, Bella is a teenager and Edward a man a century old trapped within a teenager. He may look like one (actually he doesn't), but his additudes would not be as one and they aren't.

One last thing...
Thank you to those with your very sweet comments about my posts. I do appreciate it. I know I bug the hell out of some, so it's nice to hear, well...something nice. Thank you.

Nik--thank you for the info. You may very well have more info from the industry; I can only go by what I have read or heard from Rob, and he has said he was suddenly offered many parts and will only take projects and scripts that interest him. it could very well be the process is at least partly what you say; perhaps he is not offered scripts or parts unlss the studio says so. I personally think--and again, MY parents (carpenter and jeweler) had nothing to do with the industry-- that studios offer him parts because they feel he can bring in the money, not necessarily because he has sexual maturity. They see he is considered 'hot' not only by teens but by grown women, and they want that 'hotness' to translate into hot money/property.

In BelAmi, Georges had been in the army for a while, and so I think he was at least in mid 20s. The women of that era were more mature at an earlier age; Uma Thurman at 39 playing Madeline, who might have been 30 or so, is logical because a 30 year old woman was more sophisticated and mature.

I will say again, Emile seems too old for the part in RM, but I will see better once I see the movie. I really am not familiar with most actresses, especially the ones still teens, although I find Miley Cyrus to be talentless and repulsive, and Dakota too young for the role of Alli. Perhaps there were not enough younger actresses available for the part at that time. Kristen would have been right not only age-wise, but also talent, but having her opposite Rob again would just not help either of them expand their reputations and repertoires. Rob does not look particularly old to me; he can make himself look young or older. He passes, in my eyes, as 17 in Twilight and what I see of eclipse. I know some people tire of my 'soul' talk, but I do think he has an old soul that presents, especially in his eyes, when he is his real self, in interviews, even when he has clowning around. There is age and insight and wisdom there and it can translate as being able to play an older part, I suppose. Most of all, he has presence, and that is what I think makes him formidable and viable even with actresses older than he.

TINK said...

@solas and @nikola6 checked my script and for reference sake, Georges is 30.

@buffy i remember the were tryna cast for a while and i hold strong...somethings wrong with those girls ;) get them to the psyche ward STAT

solas said...

Thnks Tink; i don't recall the specific age given in the book. To me, Rob does not physically look 30 at all, at most 26 and can definitely still pass for a teen. I do not know to what extent his 'soul' or 'presence' as I described above, along with costume, make-up, mustache, etc, will get him to the point of appearing physically as age 30.

AP said...

@Solas: The original actor cast for Georges was 30, and it is noted in one version of the script, but it's not mentioned in the book. Forestier is 27. Georges could be mid-20's to 30, dependent on the choice of actor. Interesting to see what Rob will play.

Michael Angarano has just finished Ceremony opposite Uma Thurman so it will also be interesting to see how that pairing plays...

I think all actresses/actors have to say that they have "instant chemistry" with the other because that's the whole point of the movie to begin with. Whether it's true or not is a different matter. I personally cannot see any between Robert and Emilie from the trailer or even the stills they give us. And I'm not alone in this, a few of my friends who are eager to see Rob in another movie apart from Twilight, can't see it either.

I've also seen Emilie's interviews for Lost and I gotta say, she doesn't interview all that well. And this MTV interview didn't make me believe otherwise.

I love the script and I hope they stick to the storyline they created before they knew Rob was cast. I'm more interested in seeing Tyler and Caroline than Tyler and Ally.

Thanks AP.

Isabel--I don't think it has to do with our wanting the Rob-Kristen chemistry, or only wanting Rob and Kristen together. So far, some of us just don't see the chemistry between Rob and Emilie from the trailers. Perhaps it will be there. I am sure she is a better pick than Miley Cyrus.

Poor Emilie-because she's the first one after KS to be in a hot role with ROb she gets so much crap. SHe kind of took the hit. SHe seems like a nice chic. I read somewhere that they "summit casting" had to make sure the chic wouldnt be to pretty or sexy so women wouldnt feel threatnd. Unbelievable. They must think we're a couple of teenagers. Rob has a HUGE fanbase of females of all ages. Dumba$$e$.

I if I see the chemistry between Emily and Robert and this film is that I really enjoy ... I love emily porsupuesto in Lost and I love Rob ... I like what Emily said Rob on MTV that is refreshing and very talented ...

And the real Fans of Rob are going to support because we see beyond any relationship with his privacy, respect him as an actor and want the best for ...

I am realistic Twilight that many people are not going to support because they simply ARE NOT FANS OF ROBERT ... I do not mind because Robert will attract new fans every day with every film that do.

With the new fans and fans that Rob you already have are the ones who really need it ...
Rob I love you for ever ... Always Total Support Robert all films

I think some people are misinterpreting the conclusion that Emilie is too old for the part, or that we don't see any chemistry in the trailers, as only wanting Kristen to co-star with Rob, or that we don't want Rob to move forward with his acting, or that we aren't real fans because we aren't yet impressed with a co-star who isn't Kristen Stewart.

I do hope most if not all of you can discern that this is not the case.

Also, I have in the back of my mind a memory during casting days for RM that some actresses did not want to work with Rob, either because he would steal the limelight, or because the fans would disturb the filming (which they did).
Does anyone know for sure if this is so, and if so, I wonder to what extent it efected the choice of Emilie esp in a way that had her rushed to costume.
