Good morning everybody! Why not start the day with a tantrum? I've got to wait nearly an extra month to see RM... so unfair!
Anyway, RL calling. Have a nice night to the ones who are just in from seeing the movie, and a nice day to the others :ox

I'm still 13 hrs away from seeing the movie... wish I could just pass out till it's time to go...

Feel like ive waited so long.... since first day of filming, 6/15 or so...seems like we watched just about the whole movie being made right here on the blog...

Read the script shortly after, and Tyler was forever buried I'm my heart...

I know changes were made, their last name, from Roth to Hawkins, and how Michael dies, that's a biggie...but from the trailers, alot of the dialogue seems right out of the script...

I can't wait for morning to come!

I'm so proud of Rob and just in awe of him!

A brilliant line up of stars. Robert performance left me somewhat speechless. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. Not because Tyler dies it's because the way he dies. Even though I new what the outcome was going to be before I saw the movie (I cheated and found out everything I could)it left me feeling somewhat empty like I didn't understand why this was chosen as Tyler's death. Robs you are an exceptional young man with a lot to give. I cannot wait to see what you will bring in the near future. I'm sure it will be fabulous. Congratulations on a beautifully chosen script and performance.

@Monty: I didn't know much about the movie before I saw it... I had read one post where there was a *spoiler alert* and I still read it, but it just said it had something to do with the 9/11 disaster and I kept thinking throughout the film that it was his brother Michael who must have died in that tragedy!! Never made the connection between the 2 dates... September 1991 at the beginning, and then the words "Ten Years Later" which would have been September 2001!!
I was shaken with the ending too... too shocking, too sudden... too unexpected!!!!
Rob's performance was AMAZING! His screen presence is really something!!
When I came back and read the reviews, they kept saying he "broods" and drinks beer and smokes throughout the movie... that's SO NOT true! He gives a LOT to Tyler's character... his sudden rage filled outbursts, his touching relationship with his little sister... and amazing chemistry b/w him and Emilie!
Overall, I felt it was amazing!

For those who did not read the script, Michael originally died in the first WTC bombings... Charles was out sick that day... Michael was pushed by Charles to give up being a musician to join him on Wall St and then the attacks happened, and Michael was killed... this is where the family crumbles, Charles pulls away from his children and the resentment towards his dad fuels Tyler on...that's why 9/11 was chosen as well, to have 2 sons die in terrorist attacks, several years apart...pretty powerful stuff...

Remember Me was awful. I love Robert Pattinson as much as anyone, but take off your love blinders and realize it sucked. Bad acting, bad dialogue, and way to throw in a tragedy to get people to pull for your movie.

Jen said...

The original script described above seems much more comprehensive than what they ended up pulling together. Still, I'm glad I went to the pre-screening or I would have had to write some letters to get my $10 back.

Rob was awesome in this movie. So wasn't expecting it to end like it did I was so sure the little sister was going to top herself all the way up until the teacher writes the date on the board. I went into the movie without any idea of the plotline so it made the ending that much better...First movie thats ever made me cry!!! Rob was even better than I expected...It just left me wanting more more more!!!Here's to Rob may you continue to make interesting films and would love to see an album in the future as well :)

OK... I am from India and we dont have a date yet for the release of the movie... so i am getting as much as possible from all of these threads.... I hear a mix of reviews...both good and bad....
I just wanna ask the ppl who have seen the movie if there were any real kissing scenes in this...and wanna know the chem b/w ron and emilie....

Nicole said...

I think the script was definitely more powerful than the movie. I don't understand why they changed how Michael died. To me everything was linked in the script and made the ending that much more shocking.

It also explained a lot better why Tyler had such a hatred towards Charles..because if Charles had not pushed Michael, Michael would not have been at the WTC that day.

i also wish they kept the part in where Caroline writes the date on the board instead of it already just being up there. I think that would have packed more of a punch.

Thoughts?

Other than that... i loved the movie.. Jen i don't know what you were watching but the film i saw was heart wrenching and Rob portrayed Tyler perfectly.

Thankfully, more people, fans & critics alike love it rather than hate it..

But movies, books etc are subjective..and move or don't move people differently... I go by what I like and not what other people think..

But for Rob, I want this to be s huge success for him, which I'm hoping it will be...I already know I'm going to love it... just can't wait for morning to get here!!!

Nicole said...

I too hope it is a huge success for Rob. I saw the movie last night, expecting a packed out cinema... there were 7 people in the theatre, including my friend and i :(

Im from Perth, Australia and i can't say it's really been advertised much over here.. I really hope every other city and country have a better turn out. Perhaps tonight it will be more full because it is a friday night.

I hope so too Nicole. A lot of people in LA & NY went to midnight showings.... then many will go tomorrow & Sat... Guess we'll just have to wait & see!

I'll be going in 10 hrs to see the movie. Reading everyone's comments confidenced me to be brave and go with my box of kleenex and dark glasses. I've read the script and teared up over it. I'll try not to embarras myself. I'm doing it for Rob. Just thinking of seeing him on a big screen makes me gasp for air.

This is a sad ending but I guess it does make sense.. After all, the people that were assassinated on 9/11 were just like anyone of us with lifes, families and friends... Go to work one day and boom! This happens... It might give a new perspective on these events that have been shown in other movies but not the same way... Might allow some people to deal with their own pain of losing somebody...
Anyway, I haven't seen the movie and won't see it before in comes out in April but I'm glad to know the end... Don't think I would have managed to handle it without being prepared.
After, what people think of it is like for any other book or movie... Art is subjective however it's expressed and the appreciation depends on who we are, where we come from, our culture, our age, our life... knowing that at the end we are all going the same place...
I wish this movie turns out to be a success, for Rob, for the entire cast and especially for the guy that wrote the script to start with...
Hope that Remember Me saturday works as expected...

Rather Not said...

Just got home (it's almost 3am)...I knew the outcome going in and I really wish I didn't because it colored the way I saw the film. If I did not know that it was HE who died, I might have also expected the sister to kill herself...but b/c I knew, never even occurred to me.

Did not read the script but agree that if Micheal had died in WTC #1, it would have made the second death less likely/more surprising.

Attempting to be objective, it was a solid movie. RP looks really good in it, better than as Edward, IMO. Because of the movie star persona, suspended disbelief is more of a challenge BUT before long, it was easy to believe he was Tyler. The character is memorable.

Regarding box office - midnight showing in a populous suburban area; there was a crowd there - theater half full at least. On the other hand, there were no takers to my last-minute free ticket offer on Freecycle, so general public, not as interested...

@rpattzgirl thanks it all makes sense now why Sept 11 was chosen as an ending. It all clicks to me now because I do remember reading his brother dies at the 1st bombing and I was explaining that to my hubby and sister who came with me but there was no mention of that in the movie and I thought that I missed it and they kept telling me that they only mention a suicide and I heard that bit but I thought he didn't want to tell ally just yet the truth. But I honestly think that if they kept to the original script it would have been better because to be honest I don't see no relevance with the ending to the whole movie. @ Jen I agree with Nicole I don't know what movie you were watching but Rob does put a fab performance so many different emotions and different relationships he had in this movie. My favorite has to be with his sister of course. They brought magic to the screen. I don't want to knock down any of the other cast members because they were outstanding as well. We are going to hear a lot of criticism about the ending and that was said all along and even Rob said in some of his interviews something about the ending when he was reading the script but saw past that and looked at the storyline and not just the ending. There is more to this story that Sept 11. It's about people growing, hope, love, bonding, learning it's a wonderful movie more of a realistic movie from what we have been receiving lately like avatar (not knocking the movie) but it's nice to see something like this every now and then. I'm sure I speak for all the Rob fans that Rob did a brilliant job with this character. We the fans are not saying this because be love and believe in Rob but because it's true. I'm a real Twilight fan bad but I have to say Rob actually does some serious acting in this movie. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so those who take in offense of the criticism that is going to be lashed on the film and Rob just ignore it.

I just returned from the midnight show. I am a loyal and devoted fan of all of Rob's work. The movie was fabulous, and he was fantastic in it. It was sad that he died just when things in his family were starting to work out. I hate leaving a tear jerker feeling a little depressed, but this ending made you feel hopeful for the families future. Great movie, I will be off tomorrow to see it again!

I just got back from seeing the movie. I thought the first 10 to 20 minutes had a lull to it. Background story and just getting to know the characters. I thought the story really picked up right when Tyler introduced himself to Ally. I loved the chemistry between those two. I thought Tate provided some much needed comic relief in the form of Aidan. I don't really know what to think about the ending. I knew what was going to happen so I'm not sure how I would have reacted. I have mixed feelings. I however did cry because hello it's Rob's character dying.

I believe it would have been better had they left Michael's death from the 1st world trade center attacks and made people believe it was the one on 9/11. Then that would have really shocked people.

I for one thought Rob did an amazing acting job. I was going into it skeptical about how he would pull it off. I'm very critical when I watch his roles. I believe he has shown that he can really act with this role. He can do so much more than play a vampire and I think this movie really shows that. Again I loved his acting in this movie. I'm just not sure how people will perceive this movie.

I think the reaction will be half and half. Regardless how people like the movie. Rob acts his ass off.

I'm going to see the movie again Sunday afternoon with a few people from work so I'll see how they react.

On a side note the 'Water for Elephants' script is out there and it is getting a really good review from script shadow.

I personally loved it, I have to admit it took me a little while to fully get into the storyline but I don't know if that's because I was totally hung up on staring into Rob's eyes and marvelling at his beauty.

I am glad that his brother didn't die in a terrorist bombing and killed himself instead because for me it would have been too much to have 2 brothers die the same way but at different times. I already felt it was too much tragedy for one family the way it turned out let alone throwing that into it.
I also felt the suicide angle gave tyler more depth being he was the one that found him and that would just about screw anyone up!!

I gasped when I saw the date on the blackboard and the dread was heavy for the remainder, I did not cope at all, I bawled and walked out of the cinema feeling like I had been punched in the stomach, I had that feeling for HOURS aterwards.

I thought the acting was brilliant especially by Rob, my favourite part for him was when he storms the board room, he did not over do it like many actors would have in that situation, it was utter brilliance.

The first sex scene was hot, it wasn't overdone but gave just enough of his body for me to come home and use and abuse my poor unsuspecting husband!

Big thumbs up from me!

I just came back from the midnight screening of Remember Me in Los Angeles and it was even more amazing than the first time I saw it at a screening last year. Rob's portrayal will seriously stay with you after you leave the theater. He's beautiful, raw and haunting. So many moments in the film just make you want to give Tyler Hawkins a hug because of the drama and heartache that surrounds him. Everyone was cast perfectly and delivered and none more than Rob and Ruby. I just can't get enough of this film. Remember Me Saturday here I come!

Athena said...

I really loved this film. I'm going again tomorrow and I can't wait.

I have tried to stay as much away as possible from spoilers and I'm glad I did.

It was strange because while I was watching it I thought I wasn't so "involved", I thought I was probably too distracted by Rob's utter splendour! But when I got back home, it sort of "snuck up" on me (if that's an expression) and I could barely sleep throughout the night.

In truth, I think it "hit home" only afterwards, and not while I was watching, because I'm a bit of a "diesel engine", it takes me a while to get "warmed up", in general, and on top of that I have quite high emotional defences up when it comes to emotional stuff: it takes a lot of time and powerful stuff for it to get to me... but overnight I couldn't stop thinking about the film. I found myself *grieving* for Tyler's death and not because of Rob!

I realised there were a lot of things in the film that pushed certain personal buttons of mine: Michael's suicide, Tyler's rage outbursts, 9/11 and the message that it's important to do "your thing" and live fully are points that really touch me personally.

My father committed suicide and in Tyler's rage I saw my brother's (and my own, never displayed as openly, though). I remember 11th September 2001 quite clearly and the devastating shock I felt, how *unreal* it felt. And the concept of "carpe diem" is something that my father's death engraved in fire letters in my soul.

So, Remember Me did blew me away in ways I had not expected. I was expecting romance and drama, but certainly not that ending. That is probably one of the traits I appreciate the most about the film: that it's not predictable and unless you have been "spoiled" you do not see it coming (or, in my case, you don't fully believe they *will* actually do it!) until that date spells it out on the blackboard (although it *is* possible to connect the dots right from the beginning).

Tyler's diary among the ashes truly broke my heart.

I didn't read the script, but I'm glad they introduced a "variation" by making Michael's death different from Tyler's. It seems to me that it gives Tyler's anger against his father more "reason to be": Charles tarped his son's wings and Michael withered and died because of it; pinning the consequences of a terrorist attack on Tyler's father would have been a bit shaky, in my opinion.

Also, if they had kept it as it was it would have felt like a bit of an overkill to me, on one side, and on the other I wouldn't have connected with it as much as I did. And, ultimately, it would have been unrealistic.

As for Rob, I did enjoy his work here, I think it's among his best (together with Toby Jugg and Salvador Dalì), certainly a huge step ahead in the right direction... but... sometimes I wonder if he has ever felt *really* angry in his life, I mean that anger that makes you scream at the top of your lungs and see soooo *red* that everything else fades out... because I have (my uncle once made my mother cry, I will only tell you that that's the *only* time I "let it fly" at anyone and I scared *myself* that day) and watching him confronting Charles about Caroline, I was left with the feeling that Rob is still "holding back" emotionally, when he acts, if you see what I mean. Chris Cooper did a great job of his rage, for example: that was much closer to how I felt, that day, about my uncle. I hope one day I will see Rob lashing out like that on screen.

But I really need to see the film again, because I'm sure I've missed a lot of stuff (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!).

Athena said...

@ Deb Crawford: just read your comment! Amazing how much we have in common about this film (except about Tyler's rage, but I'm Italian, after all, we tend to be somewhat "hot-headed", although I'm a tame one)!!!

@Athena I so much heart you, I have been there too, not my father but someone realy realy close, it's been almost five years, time flies but the pain stays like forever.

Tyler's diary amongst the ashes?

I must have been sipping my coke or wiping away tears when that scene came on, i can't remember it!

Athena said...

@ Dina: so true. My dad's been almost 19 years (on 2nd April) and although on one side I am "over it", the wound is still there, half-healed yet never fully healing.

Athena said...

@ Nicole: yes, there's a bit where there's all these ashes on the ground (it's a sort of close-up) and Tyler's diary is just there with its pages moving in the wind. It really drove the concept of Tyler's death home, even more than the tombstone, for me.

Anonymous said...

I know how the movie ends but reading your comments is really as hard as seeing the movie! Having to watch this, something that happened in modern history seems to be hard to handle... Don't know if i'll manage that, even if I'm going to see the movie in April with a bunch of close friends, that don't know the end, and don't want to be spoiled...

I have read the script, not seen the movie yet. I'm most curious about changing the way Micheal dies. It seems to me (without seeing it yet) that as a movie goer, not knowing the ending...being lead to believe that Michael died on 9-11 through out the movie, as in the script...would make the ending so much more of a twist. As sad and and unexpected as it was.. I thought it was a real shocker. Now reading they changed the way Michael dies...I wonder how big of a impact it now has. To me it kind of takes the OMG factor out of it. Well have to wait until I see it ... how do you ...who read the script feel about it.

@xoRob I was reading the script, I thought too that his brother was the one who got killed on the 11th, so I relaxed and I got caught by big suprise at the end, but losing two kids because of terrorism is not very realistic, so I will go down with the change.

I have been waiting for this spoiler thread since seeing this movie on premiere night, but now I find myself a little speechless. There is just so much to say that I can't get the words started.

This movie moved me to sobbing tears. I was spoiler free when I saw it and was totally caught up in the story. Loved how well the actors played their parts. Very well cast IMO. It felt so raw and real.

I also agree with the change in Michael's death. It makes more sense for there to be such rage against Charles - to blame him for pushing Michael to the point of suicide.

When the pieces started coming together for the end, I could barely control myself. It was crushing to me. Every one was getting to a happy place and then wham! Seeing Tyler looking at the family photos on the computer...I'm getting weepy just remembering it. And then when he goes to look out the window....

OK, even with all my love for Rob aside, I loved this movie and will be seeing it again and again. I know there were little things I missed that first night due to all the excitement of actually being in the theater with Rob and his family and friends. Wow! just Wow!

After the movie ended, I sat stunned in my seat for several minutes. Although I would have liked a happy ending, the film was much more powerful ending the way it did. No one plays a tortured soul better than Rob.

Even if many people do not share my obession for the Twilight Saga, the saga has at least given us one actor of note. I look forward to seeing Rob in many more roles that will leave no doubt of his stellar potential. (Hopefully many of them will be rated PG-13 as I will not attend R-rated films as a moral choice.)

I will see this with my daughter soon but I think I am going to have to sneak away and see it today. I need to see it more than once, definitely...I am completely depressed because the Boston Globe (paper where I am) gave it ONE HALF a star. Just eviscerated it. True, it wasn't a review only of Rob. In the bad reviews I've read (and unfortunately there are many) people really hate the script and the ending. They say Rob can't act, but they say it almost as an aside--they just go in expecting him to be be lame.
Oh, the only thing to do it go see it. I love this man and have so much respect for him and his talent. I just need to see the movie. I'm so glad to read the wonderful reactions here.

i read the script last june. i personally think they should have kept the original story of michael's death. i thought it would have much more of an impact, but i still cried. my friend had to drive home especially because we needed to pass the word trade center site just to get home. it brought on another round of tears. i wanted to see this movie again but i dont know if i could handle it. Rob did such an amazing job. Even my friends who arent the biggest fans of Rob said they were really surprised that he was a talented actor so kudos to him.

I just got back from seeing remember me...and i am SPEECHLESS! the only thing that pops into my head is "REAL"...this movie is nothing but real, you can feel everything, i got so caught up in the story, and i never ever expected ROB to be so so so *i can't even think of a word to describe his acting skills and what he did in this movie*...just AMAZING i cried at the end, even though i already knew the ending...there were so many emotions i could identify with; the relationship between the characters were very real and touching. tyler's personality appealed to me so much, not only because of rob, but because i could feel his pain, i really understood his struggles (well, i guess that was because of rob's amazing acting, right?). i can't really explain what this film did to me, but just brought something in me, some deep down and it made me think about my life, and the fact that reality is good even in its bad, you just have to learn to deal with it, in your own way. tyler was young and he'd gone through so many experiences, and no one was there to soothe his pains, so he started reacting by fighting with his dad. overall, i don't care about critics'reviews or anyone's for that matter, this movie meant to me soooo much, and i can't put into words how proud i am of rob, how real he was, and how intricate he could make his character. and yes, some tears did roll down my cheecks.

On one hand, they chose it themselves...and it's the most selfish thing to do..

On the other hand, how sad that they felt it was their only option, and that tomorrow would never be better?

I've read over and over again that many have read the script. I would love to get my hands on a copy of it. If someone could email it to me (monty1969@dodo.com.au) I would forever be thankful. Rob is one hell of an actor and sooner or later all those who have bagged him will eat their own words. Sure he has a lot to learn but he is only 23 years old. He has everything going for him. Remember Me is a spectacular story, even though I really didn't like the ending, but I see it more than that. He has really shown us a lot in this movie and he has left me feeling very proud of him. Rob I believe in you and will stand by you with whatever you choose in your life. You are one spectacular human being ad being so at such a young age. Keep up the great work and never let negative feedback get you down. It's all about learning and growing into the best person you can want to be.

Uh I couldn't help myself, I read the spoilers here, and now I don't know if I want to see it in theaters because well I was hoping that they wouldn't kill off Tyler even though a week before I had read a spoiler accidently, that had spoiled the ending for me *whimpers*, but I was still hoping that they would be wrong...sad endings that sucker punch the viewer, I prefer to watch alone not in a full theater of people. So now I think I'll just wait for the dvd rental...decisions, decisions...

Just got back. Oh my Goodness, This movie is exactly what I expected. He is fantastic!!! So is the rest of the cast. Every single one of them. I felt like a voyeur watching a real family situation.

Rob is his charming self, of course. His angst with his dad, there's a little clip about the Boardroom scream scene with Pierce that is really great. Also, the Sexy scenes with EMily, (sigh - melting) Old fashioned term Swooned comes to mind. hehehe

Ruby did good, but didn't outdo Rob at all. Rob and Emilie had a chemistry on screen stronger than he and Kristen if you can believe that. I was surprised and didn't expect it. Emilie is really good. In fact, the caliber of every single actor in this flick is excellent. Deserves some kind of award. Tate as buddy/roomy was really good too. I was so lost in the story, forgot it was a movie. And I read the script first. Weird, go figure.

You will definitely not be sorry you saw this. I guarantee it. Tissues or hankies required to leave the building.

Nancy said...

HI Angie and Steph,
I am right with you about it feeling so real. See my remarks earlier.

The caliber of acting is so fantastic for each and every one on it. It has to win some kind of award.

I'm gonna check out the boxofficemojo site.

I AM SO PISSED!!

I live in a small town on the Oregon coast. We have a theater here with 7 screens and they have decided not to show Remember Me!!!

I have been waiting for this movie forever! Now I guess I will just have to go completely nuts!!

ARGH!!!

HI!!
BTW i retract that statement i made about Rob's acting. I always thought he was good, but not the greatest and their was plenty of room to improve. I felt as if this movie proved me wrong. His acting was phenomenal. I was completely wrong and was so happy that people were so receptive to him as an actor and not just a pretty face.

Just got out of the movie. I had high expections and the movie met them. Chris & Pierce were just pros, Emilie and Ruby showed so much maturity in their acting. And Rob....this was excellent move for him in his career. I don't know how much more I could love this guy.
I loved the way it was directed. When a dialogue was going on we see both actors in the same frame, not just one actor saying their lines and going to the other for their lines. An actual scene showing body language with the lines. I won't mention how many tissues I went through. Oh the sex scenes were hot.

solas said...

I viewed the film this morning. I think the acting by EVERYONE was spot on, brilliant. I don't think Rob held back anger as Tyler; his was exactly that misguided inarticulated rage of adolescence/post adolescence; furious, sure in his sense of right/righteously self-righteous, yet not able to get it out the way he would really like.
As for the original idea of Michael's death: there WERE families that suffered in both the attacks; I myself have been a victim of terror attacks that some family members experienced as well; some of us survived and some did not. So in that issue, it would not have been offbase, to someone like me, at least. Perhaps in this country, especially since so many people were not aware of or forgot the earlier ETC attack,it is hokey or contrived to have 2 family members die in the same place, at different times. Sadly, not in my world. The other issue of changing Michael's death was perhaps to give Tyler more reason for rage against his father, but that rage could have certainly been rational if Michael had died because his control-freak father insisted he be in that place rather than making music, following his dream and heart.
As for the idea that 9-11 came out of nowhere-- 9-11 was more than a reason for death-- it was the end of innocence, of feeling safe in our own place, and invulnerable, and the beginning of realizing that any day can be your last, even due to no fault of your own, and so make the best of each day and let loved ones know by words and deeds that they are loved.

I posted this in another area but will say it again: there wre 2 women in their 60s on line before me when getting tickets; they were seeing the movie because they like Pierce Brosnan. When the movie was over, they were on line before me for the loo, and they were talking about ROB. They were remarking about how much they adored James Dean when they were teens, and that ROb reminded them of James Dean, and that his acting was outstanding; they had come to seePierce and came out amazed with ROb!

I'm blown away by Rob in this movie...he is everything I had hoped for - just beautiful. I just got back from seeing the first showing of the film this morning - the theater had an interesting group of people from many housewives sitting alone (like me) who just couldn't stop themselves from seeing this movie, to middle aged men, young men, and younger ladies in groups...
Rob is an amazing actor and I am so looking forward to a great career. He seems like he's choosing really different roles from the mainstream - I'm really impressed. This was a great role, beautiful performance...it really moved me. Enjoy ladies!!!

WOW! Just left the theater and am so freaking impressed! Remember Me is such a beautifully crafted movie!

First, very glad that I was spoiled---it let me focus on enjoying the movie as an experience and not worrying about the end (cause I already knew it). Weird logic, but works for me. (Several others in the theater were shocked by the ending and were majorly CRYING).

Second, kudos to WF for script and AC for direction! And the CAST??? OMG, PERFECT! I have always loved Martha Plimpton (Goonies!) and she looks fab at the beginning (she was just on The Goodwife, btw). Wasn't a big EdR fan, but so am now! Loved her Ally.

Third, Rob (not that he's not first, but)---he WAS Tyler! Just loved him, so real, so incredibly effortless.

I was thorougly prepared to dislike the movie (no HEA, no fluffy bunnies, etc.), but have to say, very, VERY happy to be wrong! Strangely, I didn't leave super despressed, I left feeling exactly what I think WF intended---a sense of loss for those who died in 9/11 and the importance of "NOW". And I want to give NYC the biggest, largest hug I can.

Gwen Cooper 426 said...

Oh, and Aidan's tattoo of Tyler on his arm is what got me the most.

EPatz said...

I went and saw this last night...I was expecting a full cinema but there was maybe 30 people there.
I kinda walked away depressed to tell you the truth. Not that it wasnt a good movie...it really was but why oh why did they have to kill him off??? Why couldnt they just live happily ever after???
After reading a few of these comments I now realise that Michaels death was alot more significant than it was in the movie (had I known he died in the WTC and not from a suicide it would have made more sense IMO).
Ruby is absolutely brilliant, she really is a superstar in the making. Rob looks gorgeous, but hey it is Rob Pattinson he doesnt look anything other than gorgeous in my eyes! LOL
There wasnt an Eclipse trailer at the start which was disappointing too...I dunno if that was just because I'm in Australia?? is the trailer a US thing??

Gwen Cooper 426 said...

Just catching up on comments and ITA---this movie needs to win awards! The QUALITY of this movie is just fantastic!

Honestly, as touchy as the ending seemed in the script, it absolutely works. WF should be commended! And the entire cast deserves serious accolades---they were amazing. This is one of the finest examples of a collaborative effort on a film. It is definitely award-worthy!

It is also definitely re-watchable. ; )

lulu patz said...

After reading some of the comments here, I have to add to my previous comment - I def agree that they had to change the brother's death from the script - it adds to the story of why Tyler and his father have such a strained relationship. Another thing I really loved about this movie and why I think Rob has more balls than any other Hollywood actor right now is that the story is really different from the typical cookie-cutter Hollywood script. I can't remember the last time I watched a movie where there was no happy ending. We were surprised - made to feel something from this film. This was a really emotionally charged story with brilliant performances. Go Rob!! So proud of you!!!

Nancy said...

I have one more remark to say. This movie moved me like "An Affair to Remember" with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.

So I hope you understand. **Affair to Remember* was my favorite film since I was a kid.

Just got back and am stunned...in a good way. Rob was amazing. I mean, just really good. I found myself sitting there with my mouth open at how amazing his acting was. I just don't get how the critics are panning this movie. I can see how they panned Twilight and New Moon. I mean I love Rob, but I can see that critics wouldn't like those flicks. But this movie had such great performances, I found myself caring about the characters. At least Ebert gave it two thumbs up. I really hope this movie comes out of this weekend at #1 at making at least $25-30. That will be enough to show Rob can open a movie on his own.

I'm afraid people will throw things at me but I didn't care for the writing at all. I thought Rob was wonderful in SPITE of the writing. I saw it a few hours ago and I keep thinking about it--can't get it out of my mind--not because it's Rob, but because he made Tyler such a complete character, and I really ended up caring. But I thought the direction was choppy and the writing often too cute by half, too self-aware. The story just didn't know what it wanted to be--it was so formulaic so much of the time but it clearly wanted to be something different.
I don't think they should have used 9/11. Too big, too risky, not earned. It threw the movie out of balance.
I know many won't agree--JMHO. But the main thing is that Rob really was fantastic. I hate that the reviewers are being so awful to him; I truly don't think it's deserved. I just think most of them hated the movie as a whole and are not able to separate his performance.

i've seen the movie and i loved it. but there's an important question left: what is the film really about? about loss, i get that. but is there something more? like "the good ones always die too young"? please share your opinion with me

Hiya, Nancy! At the end, when Aidan is in class? You can see "Tyler" on his upper arm, peeking out from his sleeve, before they pan to his face.

I'm one of those people who loves a) details like that and b) continuity. Just as Tyler had "Michael" tattooed on his chest.

Ally getting on the subway at the end? Loved that too. Looked to be the same station as the one where her mother was murdered.

Going to see the movie, again, tonight with eldest son (had to bribe him, but he's going to love it)!

I just saw the movie and I'm still shaking. It was very good and I don't understand why some critics ripped it. I thought it told a tragic but up lifting story in a simple, terse way with the emphasis on the joys, anger, frustration and losses that people have in their lives. I agree with so many of your comments posted here. It had something so heart wrenching but at the same time I got it-Ally's smile at the very end of the movie perfectly described how I felt. My only complaint was that I saw so many fricking trailers that gave away so many important details of the film that when they occurred in the film they felt anti-climatic. Great job Rob, Pierce, Ruby, Emilie, Chris-great job. I have my three tickets for tomorrow and I can hardly wait to see it again.

@ rpattzgirl - I'm very sorry to read about your mother. That had to have been very hard. It would have been so easy to have become a royal bitch and very bitter, but you are loving and giving and nurturing and funny and you go beyond the average to help anyone. I'm sure RM touched you in ways the rest of us can only think about. Thank you for being here and being you. You do make a difference.

I saw RM this afternoon and can only add a few things to what's already here:

*Rob Pattinson should be proud of his performance. He has demonstrated that he has the skill to be on screen with the best and he certainly holds his own.

*He delivered a phenomenal performance under adverse conditions. How many other actors could have focused as well as Rob did and then delivered a quality performance? Methinks not too damn many.

*His accent, whether British English or American English, is delivered with a genuine earnestness and is a believable one.

*He has a presence on screen that draws the viewer in. He has such expressive eyes.

*The sexual tension he provides to "those" scenes can't be matched. There's just something he has going in that area that dominates and owns the viewer.

*Watching him kiss stimulates more than just my lady parts. He is one amazing lover.

I'm obviously very taken with him, but I know good acting when I see it. Rob has mastered what it takes to generate a broad appeal (no pun intended). He has it all and he's demonstrated how well he delivers in RM.

This is early in his game. I'm ecstatic to be along for the ride. There obviously will be many, many more opportunities for him and for his fans.

Gorgeous, gorgeous movie. Allen Coulter did a fantastic job. I can't wait to see this again though I don't know if that will be anytime soon.

Rob really impressed me. I expected him to do a great job with this character being the intelligent person he is but he really shocked me.

and the love scenes were beautifully shot, eh?! I loved every part of the film.

solas said...

For myself, it was an in-depth sensitive look at how loss is dealt with, each to generation, within families, and paralleled to a nation. I think of it as a family drama, but I know that is not the right word, but it is also not a teen drama; it is a drama of crisis and loss within families and the family of the nation.
The focus is on late adolescent/early adults dealing with their losses suffered still in the age of their innocence. Their emotions and questions and ways of dealing differ from the generation of the parents, because the younger ones are just starting out. Not that loss is any less when people are older, but it is like a young sapling damaged by a storm that also damages a large tree; the one inch mark left on the sapling that survives is deeper and more pronounced at the time of damage, and stays with the tree for its lifetime, a large effect, where as that same storm one inch sized damage to the large tree does not effect it deeply; the trunk is thick, the rings are many already.
Not to say the parents are not affected: One father becomes overrotective, perhaps more controlling and less patient than before; another, also controlling, is detached from his children, perhaps to buffer the blow of loss.
The 9-11 attacks, like the assassination of JFK a generation before, totally changed this country and the people within, taking away innocence, forcing a sense of loss and a new way of looking at life and loved ones.

Finally a chance to blurt. I also think there were odd segues here and there, which were not so in the original script, but obviously were changed due to time constraints or build for the whole piece. Some footage definitely edited out. And, yes, some of the writing is self-conscious and there are some contrivances. However, I think it earned the ending and the abruptness of it reflects the incident itself. I really liked the Newsweek take on the film and they 'got' the bigger picture the film was aiming for. As did a lot of people commenting here.

I thought the performances, as I've said, ad nauseum, lol, were the real strengths. So wanted a longer scene between Rob and Chris, but ah, well....

As for Mr. Patterson..er..Pattison..Pattizon..him: starting to come into his own. There were times when he used his fall-backs, and they are clear in his mannerisms, but at other moments he truly inhabited Tyler. At all times he is what all those critics call "watchable." However, I don't really know what they mean in the context they've been using it as I don't see how an actor compels without having focused energy, an inner life, and being in relationship with others in the scene. I understand why he wanted to do this story, and am glad he did.

The only concern is the film doing well enough for him to retain opportunities being offered. I'm not sure how well it will do, given the storyline, ending and so forth. Hoping enough fans turn out to push it to decent figures....

saw remember me today, liked it, didn't love it, maybe it'll take a second viewing. I did love rob in it, he was very real. Tate (aiden) was also really good. There were a few cringeworthy scenes - the cafeteria meeting, the first date definitely bad script there

I thought the ending was done very tastefully. Pierce Brosnan's face when he was standing by the car looking up almost had me tearing up.

One thing that bugs me is that Martha Plimpton is not credited on IMDB as ally's mom. That scene was very good. Her staring down the muggers trying to memorize their faces, I had chills.

I truly was amazed by Rob and the movie. As I said earlier there really should be a disclaimer. I know a few of us have spoke about 9/11 on here before (ie. with solas) but it is completely different reliving it in that movie. If anyone who knows someone who lost their life or eye witnessed this tragedy like I did I then you know this movie really should of had a disclaimer. I knew the ending because I read the script last year and I knew what was going to happen, but I went to the movies last night and 2 girls ran out of the movie crying. I am not sure if it was just too emotional or just hit to close to home. This was my only qualm. I don't feel like a movie like this is too soon, but thats just for me. For others, it might be. It is hard to have that sort of disclaimer without ruining it but I still think it was necessary.

Aside from that I thought the movie was brilliant. I went in seeing it as a Rob fan and I left a RM fan. It was so off base from any type of movie I have ever watched. I was truly impressed. Even though the end was sad and most people like myself will focus on the 9/11 plotline..it was still a good movie that taught you to live life to its fullest. My favorite part was actually when Ally finally rode the train at the same stop where her mother died. To me that was the most powerful part.

Just got home from the movie. I thought it was really good. Rob and Emilie and Ruby did a great job. Just looking at Rob on the big screen was worth it for me!! Unfortunately I knew the ending (made a mistake looking at an IMDB board) and I really wish I hadn't known. I was expecting it and it somewhat lessened the experience. I certainly did cry though, but not as much as I was expecting. All in all I thought it was great and I'm going back again tonite since I can't go on Remember Me Saturday. @StephsLegit: I also lost a friend in the attack, and nearly several more who were very lucky, but I don't think it should have had a disclaimer. Although there is sense of foreboding in the film, it is not primarily about the event itself and a disclaimer might make people think otherwise.

I cried at the end of the movie, then came home and was okay for a while, and now I'm crying again about Tyler. It was just so sad when they showed his journal and tombstone and then to see everyone going on with life. So sad!! Still loved the movie though.

I just returned from the theater.

I loved this movie. I thought everyone was excellent in it. Of course, my eyes were glued to Rob.

I do agree that scenes tended to jump, quickly. However, I felt that this added to the film, for me. It felt like moments in time filmed on a family video camera and spliced together. It made all those moments more real. Not sure that made since.

I also feel that the dramatic ending is important. Tyler spends the entire film, trying to clue his father to the fact that every little moment with family is important. In the end he got a very big and dramatic "I told you so". That was the message I got from the movie. Live now, because you do not know what the next minute will bring.

I will most definately be seeing it, again.

As for me I am almost 45 years old and the last time that someone's beauty was so painful to watch was Paul Newman's in 'Cat on a hot tin roof".
Rob was angelic and he gave such a sweet tender performance. Even when he was angry, pissed,or badass you just wanted to hug him because he was so wounded.
The scene were they are both sleeping after they had made love...melting.
His eyes changed so many colours I lost account. I am so proud of him, he was amazing.
Pierce was fantastic and so the rest of the cast.
Emily's smile at the very end just made me cry a river.
But life goes on.

Last but not least now I know I got it for life.

Where to start.... there was a lot riding on this movie for me. Like just about everyone else I was blown away by Rob in Twilight. He transformed what could have been a ridiculous movie into something almost sublime. He didn't really have a lot to do in New Moon but his portrayal of Edward has always seemed to me to be spot on (how do you play a dead guy? Like that.) I thought he was hilarious in How To Be, but I was worried that maybe, just maybe, these were one-offs; one fuelled by his passion for Kristin (sorry if you have issues) and one fuelled by youthful exuberance. But this one really clinched it for me. Maybe I'm waaaaay biased but I really tried not to be. I thought he was quite simply the best thing in the movie. And to those who go on about moody and mopey and James Dean blah blah, what I saw was a supremely intelligent, controlled, consistent, coherent portrayal of a guy whole life is a shithole of family junk. And speaking of shithole - the apartment! People talk about New York being a "character" in the movie, that apartment stole some scenes man! I have a few misgivings...never been a fan of voiceovers, and I thought it dragged a bit in the middle. But, if Rob hopes to fade quietly into the background after the Twilight mania is over, performances like this won't do it.

Critics and naysayers obviously did not see the same film that I saw. Moved both my sister and I to tears all three times we experienced Remember Me. My sister came up with a very profound saying that this is not a love story but in fact a story about the power and the healing of love.

@ rosy - the kissing accompanied by the moans - at that point I stopped focusing. Couldn't tell you whether there was tongue or no tongue action, but there was certainly action going on in all the females around me following that first, graphic moan.

@ rosy again - we should be so lucky to have the deleted scenes with the modesty patch circulated. I think we'd all be dead before we could watch a second time. LMFAO!

Acting: You can see Robert's acting getting better and better. He is truly growing as a actor. Everyone else's acting was pretty good. I just feel like they were directed very well. that leads me too...

Directing: I don't think this was directed well at all. There were a lot of akward time, some times the scene would switch too fast other wayyyyy to slow. If the directing was better I feel like this movie could have been a hit.

Script: The ideas in the script and everything was great however some times the lines were a little awkward. I also feel like the script didn't truly give us an inside view into what they are truly feeling. I mean i know there was tragedy and heartache from the actors but through their words? no way.

Cemestry: I though Emilie and Robert had noooo chem. The sex scenes were fine but the first big kissing scene was really really slow and akward. Also the, i guess you could call it foreplay, (i.e. shower scene, mad rough angry scene) had none. idk.

Ending: The ending was great. I had no idea (well some) what was going to happened. I did leave the theater bawling my eyes out (never have before) but I also agree Montey1969 in saying that I was left feeling a little empty... like there is still something left unsaid but I guess that's the point and why everybody cried.

I was thinking the whole time that I wouldnt see it again in theaters but i would see it maybe one more time just for the ending...so sad yet so great. but i would only go if its 6 bucks again!

I think this may be one of those sleeper films that becomes a classic over time. Don't know how much it will gross this first weekend but I loved it! Really even with the sad ending it is a hopeful story. It teaches us to say I love you today and not wait until next week. Tyler and his father start having a better relationship; Caroline and her father start a better one also; Ally and her father unite in their grief to have a more adult understanding. Ally's strength of character is very hopeful for her future. Even Aiden looks like he is becoming more adult. I think the movie will stand up to multiple viewings and just grow more loved. All the actors did wonderful jobs. Rob was terrific.

i hope this movie does really well. I just want people to take him seriously as an actor. He is so talented and I hope that people will realize that he has so much more to offer as an entertainer other than twilight.( I say entertainer because he is a gifted musician as well.) If this movie does well and people are more open to him as an actor then it can really jump start his career. Right now he is a hot commodity but he will fizzle over time just like Leo did, but Leo made smart moves after Romeo + Juilet which contributed to his longevity as an actor. I hope the same for Rob. He is too good of an actor to be forgotten and this movie is really too powerful to be forgotten as well.

This is a movie that I will not soon forget.....it will stay with me for a long time. I think that the way it ended was the best way it could have. It shows that nothing in life is certain and that life must be LIVED because you never know when your last moment will come. I remember exactly where I was when 9/11 happened.....and I have never looked at life the same. You must grab whatever you hold dear and not let go. Someone said earlier that 9/11 took this country`s innocence away and I think that is the best description that there is for the feeling that took hold afterwards. The acting by all...especially Rob was absolutely spot on. I was squalling by the time the credits came on.

Wens and LHR, Love you and totally agree with you both.

The reason why I would have wanted a disclaimer is because this movie hits very close to home
1. I live in NYC
2. I have seen the plane hit the 2nd tower from my school window with my own yes
3. My dad was in the building (he is fine, thank god)
4. I have to pass the WTC site almost everyday to get to school because it is on my bus route.

As I said before it hits very close to home for me which is why it was such an overwhelming movie. Even when i read the script last June I was just wrecked with emotions. It is such a powerful film and its story needs to be told. It has such a wonderful cast and the story is so personable and real. I just know there are others who maybe never read the script and I fear for them having to see that.

A girl from my high schools' father was a firefighter who died on 9/11. I randomly look at her facebook page from time to time and I saw she was a Rob fan. I am just assuming she saw this movie or is planning on seeing it. This si the reason why I feel like it might need a disclaimer because it really is a sensitive topic .. its even more so affected by those who cant forget it because they are reminded of it everyday.

Hi ladies, I just got home from seeing RM and all I can say is wow.

Our boy has a lot of talent and this film was just the tip of the iceberg. I was especially impressed (and shocked) with how well he played rage.

The scenes with his sister were some of my favorites. Just to see him kidding around with her was so great.

He reminds me a lot of the early Leo days. I think with a little more time and experience he could be truly amazing and a great actor.

RM was a great start and I know it's just the beginning.

As for the hotness factor, there were a number of scenes where I just stopped breathing because, yes, this man is beautiful. And the sex scenes, oh good GOD!!! I could watch them over and over.

I also really loved the ending and thought it was very tastefully done. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to see it again tomorrow!

Loisada said...

Spoiler warning: in that I'm going to play devil's advocate here!

First let me say that Rob stretched himself as an actor in RM and carried off some beautiful moments. He's growing and getting better all the time, and he should be proud of his work here.

That said, I think the script has major failings and I understand that many people feel almost insulted by the ending, which I find gratuitous and believe actually detracts from the film's high points.

Steph: I truly understand your emotions, I had friends in the towers too. But in my mind RM is not at all about 9/11, and could have made its point by killing Tyler off in another way. In ANY other way. 9/11 is too important to be casually thrown in at the end like this, IMHO.

I think Mr. Fetters tried to pack in too many "heady" and unnecessary coincidences, and didn't trust himself to flesh out the intimate moments instead.

I'm afraid right now that it will be very difficult for this movie to find its audience. I'm hoping that it will bring in at least 15M this weekend. I know.... I hate to look at success in terms of numbers, but the box office needs to be solid to show that Rob can "open" a movie. And given this movie's weaknesses, IMO Rob's draw is about the strongest thing it has to offer.

I have a feeling my reaction puts me in the minority, and that's fine because I do want people to go to this movie! We all need to remember it's a tiny $20-million production that shouldn't be expected to compete with big budget fare. I'm very pleased for Rob, and keeping my fingers crossed that RM will do well for an independent movie. And nothing would make me more happy than to be proved wrong and have this movie be a sleeper hit!

Robler owns me! FILTM

Nancy said...

Sorry Loisada, I totally disagree. This film has epic written all over it.

9/11 hit ALL Americans, not just NYC. A remark was made earlier about America's Innocence was lost on that day. We all felt it, that's why the T-shirt, sweatshirt with the Flag came about. We were united completely. And this movie reminds us of that. I feel the united part from this and enjoy your family members now while they are still near you. But of course, this is my version.

Love the movie and can't wait for my DVD.

Just got home from seeing RM! I was blown away! Not that I wasn't expecting a good movie but I wasn't sure what to expect. I truly enjoyed the movie. I hadn't read the original script, so I didn't realize Michael was supposed to die in the first WTC attacks, but I have to agree, that might have been a better way to go with the movie. That's just an after-thought, however. I really enjoyed the movie, cried at the end and am impressed with the acting, especially Rob's. I thought it was very well done. Not a packed theater where we went but there were quite a few ppl there. My husband went with me and also enjoyed the movie. I was not expecting that ending! I'm glad I didn't read the script before seeing the movie!

Steph is Legit said...

@Nancy
I didnt mean to make it just about NYers. I was just trying to emphasize that its a hard movie to take especially when ppl live near the epicenter of it. It wasnt only America that was affected. it was all nations and America' greatness was taken down a peg that day.

I know the movie wasn't a 9/11 film, but it was the first fictional story to come out revolving around the issue. Yes there was the movie about the WTC , but the audience knew what the movie was about. With this movie I felt like the ending kind of overshadowed the point of the movie, but that is just me. As we can all tell from the comments on here that not everyone feels that it was overshadowed.

As for the DVD my neighbor gets the award show copies so I will only have to wait about 2 weeks until I have my DVD lol.

I thought the movie was very good and the cast strong.I am happy to say that many of the critics that I read prior to seeing it were dead wrong and overly harsh in my estimation.
"The movie was maudlin." In real life as these comments bear out most of us eventually suffer tragedy. The existence of tragedy is not in and of itself maudlin. It is the shared tragedy that is the basis of Tyler and Allie's relationship and makes it believable.
The movie also captures the fact that pain and lost can and should serve as an opportunity for growth when it is accepted and supported by relationship rather than avoided.
"Rob just brooded as he did in twilight." I really think this criticism must be fueled by jealousy and is just a cheap shot. I found his acting very credible.
Rob proved he has acting ability in this movie.
"The dialog was lame". I didn"t find this so. I found that it developed likable characters and made us care for them. it developed the relationships as well as the plot.
The one criticism that I think is valid is that the ending is so random and disconnected from the rest of the movie that it can only be seen as contrived.
In any event, I enjoyed every minute of watching Rob Pattison in this movie.

I just returned from the movie and am still very affected. This movie is not about box office. It needed to be made and I think Rob saw that. I was sucked in not by the acting but by the story. Too bad the theatre was not full. People who don't see it will miss something that will stay with them.

its just a terrible weekend to open. i would have pushed for next weekend because AIW will steal all the thunder. it would have prob faired better if there wasnt a blockbuster to compete against.

who knows though. i hope it hits the 30 mill mark. it would mean so much for his career if he can carry a movie all by himself

I just got back from seeing "REMEMBER ME"....
I LOVED IT!! I thought Robert did a "OUTSTANDING" job. He got to act through lots of different emotions. I loved how he was just a normal guy. I have been avoiding all the threads with spoilers because I didn't want to ruin the movie for myself. The ending was a total "SHOCK". I didn't see that coming at all. When Sept. 11th was written on the board, I new something was up, but I didn't see them killing off "Robert's" character off. I just sat and cried.
Even knowing how it ends I will definitely go out and buy this DVD when it is out for sale. I thought "Robert" looked "BEAUTIFUL" His acting was believable and I thought he brought a lot to his role. All the actors did.
I am so proud of him!

Part One:

Came out of the theatre a couple of hours ago. Avatar, Alice and Green Zone all had hardly any seats left, but RM wasn't as full. On its first night. Not a good sign. But, we'll see.

I was heartened by what Solas observed: that older women had gone to see Pierce and come out amazed at Rob. Hopefully, a lot of that will happen. AnnieEvil...you talked about the Rob effect. I hope that in itself will make people, new fans of Rob, go again with others they know.

Laurie, I hope you're right, that it might be that sleeper which becomes a classic.

My BF came with me tonight and wasn't impressed with the movie as a whole. Liked Rob though.

I came away wanting to go again. I did find it a bit disjointed.

I wished there'd been more with Tyler's mother, because, a mother who has lost a child is a powerfully tormented being. I didn't mean to disclose this, but now feel compelled. I am a mother who lost her 20 yr. old son. His body was found six months after he went missing. There is simply no worse torment. None.
Now I cannot believe there would not have been more interaction between Tyler and his Mom.
I remember Rob saying that Tyler could rail against his Dad because his Dad was stronger but his Mom was broken. Yeah, I'm there. But that relationship still needed illustrating. I don't think Will Fetters is mature enough to get that, to see that point of view, because he didn't deal with it. And Rob, for all his love for the script--god help us if all the others he's been sent to read are worse--hasn't suffered a supreme loss like that and wouldn't have seen this hole.

I wished I hadn't had any clue about the ending because it makes a difference. Once Tyler was gone, I was gone.
Yeah, everyone else was getting on with their lives but the huge emotional suffering needed to be portrayed. Okay, so Ally gets the nerve to use the subway again and Aiden has a tattoo (which I missed); Daddy takes his daughter to the art gallery. It was as if the characters, after suffering this terrible loss, had philosophical, not emotional, responses. It did not feel right.

Lives have been changed and those are the outward indications of that.
But, the tormented protagonist, Tyler, the one around whom all the others revolved, has died horribly. I didn't see that. I only saw, 'life goes on' and the idea--not the execution--that love heals and the carpe diem idea.

bonemama said...

Let me first say that i never read the script, but when he stepped into the elevator i knew exactly what was going to happen..and my heart sunk, the whole theater gasped when they saw the chalk board with the date, but i knew before i even saw it. on top of that girls were crying in the bathroom after the movie, they were very moved. I didn't cry..in fact i was smiling because im so proud of Rob and his amazing acting abilities. Till now I never realized how hard he works to build a character and make it his own. I loved Ruby and how she and Rob were together as sister and brother and how she admired him thoughout the entire movie..never faultering him in anyway. I really enjoyed Emily as well..she was really comfortable with her character. I was really shocked by her dad striking her..he was damaged as well..even after 10 years.. Pierce..ah pierce...what a strong character..just like Rob said he was unaffected by what Tyler was saying to him..almost in an inhuman way..disconnected from his children altogether, possibly a coping mechanism on his part.

I have so much more to say that I cant put into words.

Rob if you are reading this..let me tell you that in my own opinion..this is oscar worthy..and I am so proud of you and your accomplishments thus far..we are all looking forward to eclipse and Bel Ami. I was so impressed with you in RM..i called my sister and I couldnt stop praising everyone preformance. Bravo and we love you!

jessegirl said...

Part 2:

Cerulean: Yeah, his NY 'apartment stole scenes'. It was the only comic relief in the film.

But I also agree with you about Rob's acting. You said, 'intelligent, controlled, consistent..portrayal'.
Now Tyler as a lost soul, tormented and rebelling against the only target who can take it--his Dad--(okay, the fight scene and the violence at the school too), that Tyler Robert played perfectly. And that was the core of Tyler.

People complain about Rob's broody face. It was on point here, necessary to the character. Journaling and introspection is a way of coping with loss, so is Tyler's formlessness, his lack of ambition, his rage and sense of impotence. All those Rob illustrated really well with his very expressive face.
All in all I thought he did a great job.

My criticism would be about the disjointedness of the totality. I think it was trying to achieve too much within the tight time frame.

I've already said I think the mother's relationship was glossed over, and in real life it would not have been. The scene at her family's beach house was too short; it didn't explore what it could have and in the end one wondered at the purpose of including it at all.

I'll have to think about this more.
I'm seeing it again tomorrow and maybe things will seem clearer then.

jessegirl said...

Yesm bonemama, I'd like to think Rob would be lurking here a bit, at least on this thread, because whatever the critics say, we here (in general) are able to see what so many cannot.

Rob, do not read reviews.

Yeah, Rob, you can act, and if people are blown away by your looks they are also deeply affected by your abilities and your devotion to excellence, which shows so clearly in this film.

That said, it is hard to be objective about such a sensitive and talented actor because no one can get past his looks and magnetism to figure out just how good an actor he is.

Expecting Rob to 'open' a film is cruel. It puts inhumane pressure on him. He is a human being who deserves a chance to have his work fairly evaluated. It isn't fair, either to applaud him in mindless adoration or to scoff at his efforts merely to counter that adoration. Neither are helpful.

Stop reading Rob, if you're there.

Okay ladies, no matter what 'reviews' we give RM, let's face it, we couldn't take our eyes off him. Man oh man, he is gorgeous beyond belief in this movie. No vamp make-up. Just Rob, looking magnificent whether beat-up, smoking, in bed or out, in a suit or t-shirts, whatever, whatever. Even in those stupid shorts.
And thank you Allen Coulter for all the close-ups, 'cause it was a Robfest of mammoth proportions. CW did not get that.

I just came back from my second viewing of Remember Me... and I liked it even more. I had to *really* make an effort not to bawl my eyes out. That's why I've only just come home, I just needed to distract myself and calm down.

I would say that 9/11 hit the whole world. I know it hit *me*. It was afternoon, in Italy, and I was in my office and I realised something was happening by the comments on the message board I was reading. I switched to the news and the first plane had hit one of the towers. I, too, thought it must have been an accident, and it was already horrible like that. By the time I went running to my colleagues to tell them, the second plane hit and we knew it could not possibly be an accident. When the towers came down, I just couldn't believe my eyes. There are no words to describe it and I can only imagine what it must have been for people in NY and who had people in or around the Towers. I think I would have lost my mind. I had a friend on holiday right there when it happened and I was so freaked out! Thank God, nothing happened to him.

I also would like to revise my comment about the boardroom scene. It did start a bit awkward, like a mixture of Art and Salvador Dalì, but then it built up and built up... and Tyler *did* try to go for Charles' throat, I don't know how I missed it the first time...

I might add that, just like the first time, after the sex scene I soooo needed a moment. Glad I had a bottle of water. His chest is the best. And I could now draw a map of the moles on his back! And did I mention the way he holds his fork? And the way he says "freak of nature"!!! So Rob!

I went to the show at 1.30pm (here it's Saturday) in George Street, so there were very, and I mean *very* few people: I don't think there were 20 (quite a few women in their 60s and probably 70s, 4 men, three on their own, one probably a homeless, bless him). But I think it was the time, I'm sure that the following shows will have more people. The good thing is that the Sydney CBD is FULL of Remember Me posters :)! I don't remember as many for New Moon!

Big hugs to you, jessegirl.

I wish Lena Olin had had a bigger part, because of the reasons you mentioned and because she is one of my favourites, I've loved her since Alias and then in Chocolat she was outstanding!

By the way, loved Ally's smile at the end. Perfect closing. And I sent a message to my Mum in Italy :).

Ok, this is my pontificate about the ending and then I'll zip it.

I think it doesn’t need a disclaimer because it is part of so many people’s experience, in one way or another, much like a major war, or disaster, and was a landmark point in history. I think the issue about its use in RM is whether it is seen as ‘gratuitous’ or not. Is it there to make the film more important? Is it using the natural grief associated with the pain and horror of that day to ‘load’ the ending and Tyler’s loss? Or is it attempting simply to place it in the context of loss, both personal and universal? People suffer loss every day, due to smaller-scale tragedies, exampled in the murder of Ally’s mother. Can one not speak about a personal loss if it happened during a major event? It’s difficult because the event is still so resonant. Obviously, critics were, and audiences will be divided. I think one can argue either way, dependent on whether you think the film comes by the use honestly, and that probably depends on whether you buy into the story, and the characters. I think Fetters was trying to speak of the ‘ordinary or personal loss in the extraordinary’ but it is a risk, and makes it controversial, no matter what. However, I still think to ‘warn’ people would be difficult, as it would basically ‘spoil’ the film. It’s not the first feature film to deal with the issue indirectly, either. There have been several that have used 9/11 as an underlying theme or a catalyst. I agree, though, that this is probably the first time it has been referred to directly and yet also so obliquely. I understand if some think it is a gratuitous use, or exploits, to some extent, the existing grief underlying the moment. I don’t think that’s what was intended, and for me, it made it a truly New York story.
