Robert Pattinson - Remember Me Review from Australia's The Age

WHILE it's too early to say whether Robert Pattinson has the acting talent to go beyond playing a hot vampire in the Twilight series, Remember Me suggests his prospects are slim.

Pattinson isn't the first teen idol to fancy himself as the second coming of James Dean, but his performance as rebellious rich kid Tyler Hawkins is a ponderous catalogue of Method mannerisms: he spends the whole movie pouting and letting his head roll forward as he fumbles for a cigarette.

Though Remember Me is basically a love story, like many recent American films it's also about grief. Tyler has been at odds with his family ever since his brother's suicide, while his new girlfriend Ally (Emilie de Ravin) has never recovered from the fateful day when her mother was gunned down in the subway.

The contrivances don't stop there: director Allen Coulter can do little to redeem the inane script by newcomer Will Fetters, which strives to be whimsical, edgy and profound.

This is the kind of drama where the hero quotes Gandhi and the kooky heroine orders dessert first because she believes in seizing the day.

Much of the dialogue is so awful it's hard to see why anyone thought the film a good idea - unless it was for the sake of the ending, which will either blow your mind or leave you paralysed with embarrassment.

Wow, that was harsh and not true. I've seen it and he is amazing in it. He just doesn't brood through the film, he give a moving, emotional performance that pulls you in and makes you feel like you know Tyler.

Huh. :-( And I second that oy, xxrobxx. :-(

Are there any good reviews out there? All I have read today about the movie is negativity, and a lot of it. Just spoils it for us, Rob's fans. I am not going back on his websites until after I see the movie. Bummer................
Well, I guess I will see the Eclipse clip, but that's all.

Hey, ADM, we're in the RR if you're up for it! :)

There's a couple of small spoilers here. :(

Oh to hell with this bum review. I'll judge it for myself and I'm betting it's fantastic!

Wow... that was harsh. I have a question and it may be kind of spoilery

I keep reading that his brother commits suicide... ok I read the script and he did not commit suicide in the script. I was thinking did they change that part, but then the manner of his brother's death is esential for the film...so I'm lost

@CL - ITA. That *was* rather harsh.

This review is bullshit. I'm an actor and I've studied the 'method' this dick writes about and he clearly has no damn clue. I've seen the film and Rob's performance is very good. He makes bold, edgy choices with his character that confront the viewer, not predictable, safe choices that this prat probably would have been comfortable with.

Oh, and I'm Australian too so I'm sorely tempted to track this joker down and slap him across the top of the head for being so immensely clueless while sounding like a sanctimonious jack-ass.

Methinks jealousy is a little green eyed reviewer.

Suck it, mate. It doesn't matter what the hell you think about Rob and his career. He's a superstar regardless, and by the sounds of it, a much nicer person than you.

Kiya....Have I told you lately how much I love you *sings* I haven't seent he movie, but this ***hole is not going to keep me away from a movie with Rob in it. From what I have seen of the previews it looks incredible.

Barely a review, but in the same vein as the Village Voice and Entertainment Weekly. There are those who aren't going to give Rob, or RM, a chance at all, as I expected, because of his popularity and TSaga association. RM also appears to be the kind of film that polarizes, partially because of the ending.

I think Rob and the whole team deserve a lot of kudos for sticking with a film that doesn't fall easily into a genre and takes the kind of risks it does. It's not without flaws, but it reaches a lot higher than many romantic dramas I've seen recently. Rather they reach than not try at all. And I fully agree with CL07..er..STP about Rob's performance.

@Jane: Yes, there are a lot of good reviews out there as well. :)

Way to go KiyaRaven, this person can go suck eggs. If I wasn't going to before, I would go after that review. When they give negative reviews... they are remembered... He's just looking for attention.

God who peed in his cornflakes?

I doubt this person knows much about anything... I've read the script and Will Fetters is a great writer, unlike the arse that wrote this review...

And Robs acting? Yea, nuff said... he's brilliant..

We're posting the good, the bad and the plain old ugly (this one).... I have to say from the reviews I've read it seems to be 75% positive reviews... then the odd "I'm jealous of that Twilight Dude" knob like this...

Australian press has never been nice with Rob. The only thing I've seen them doing is invent stuff... So this review is probably from somebody who hasn't even seem Remember Me... LOL... Who cares about reviews anyway...?

WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone said...

Wow that was mean. Thank God, Kat, you're saying there's about 75% positive reviews.

this person is a bitch! what a have seen give me a good feeling and I am planning to go see this movies at least 3 times this weekend no matter what this bitch says.

Press has not been universally anti-Rob in Australia. Both the SMH and Courier-Mail reviews have been pro Rob, if not RM. Just to mitigate the generalizations.

Just plain mean and petty!
I fully intend to judge for myself, when we eventually get to see it here in the UK (why do we have to wait so long??)
I have heard so many positive things about RM, reviews like this sem to be in the minority. You can't please everybody I suppose.
@Kiya
Give him a slap for me too! Arse.

Okay So I have now seen the movie 4 times today and it is spectacular. My appreciation of Rob ( already at a an all time high) is now even higher as an actor. There were no tell tale mannerisms that we know of him so much. Maybe a few pouts but really he looked and acted differently to anything I have seen before. Two Sex Scenes and 1 great hallway kiss scene with lots of hair pulling (This movie is so going to rock FF, can't wait to read the lemons on this)
Eclipse Trailer is Fab,, OMG!!!!

5 out of 5 and everything they are saying about pierce and Ruby is so true. Great acting overall. Take Tissues..

Tomorrow 3 sessions and 1 sessions on Saturday with 30 work collegues. Go Robler!!!

As an Australian and an avid reader of The Age along with usually agreeing with the reviewer. I have to say I am not impressed with this review and I totally believe that they got out of bed the wrong side that day and were expecting Twilight Rob so were going to write a bad review anyway. The Movie is great. It saddens me that this is an Australian review when we Aussies Love Rob! After all his last two leading ladies have both had an Aussie connection in some way.

omg I didnt get what the rewiever trying to do but I can say it smelled jelausy to me I didnt see the movie yet but as I know from trailers the sentences are really good

I normally don't say that people who disagree with me are stupid (I just assume they are deranged--or--gasp-even normal ;-)) but I do wonder, after seeing a few reviews that are negative, especially those that comment about Rob's performance in Twlight as being 'stiff' or 'wooden,' if perhaps they are not the sharpest crayons in the Crayola box.
And whilst I understand that there is no accounting for taste, and that art that some appreciate, others do not, some things really do seem to go over the heads of some of these reviewers.

xorobox-- I also was puzzled, having read the script, what they were talking about re a brother's suicide; I thought what was in the script was so much more meaningful, packed such a punch, although I can understand in the context of the film's development of the question of living life each day, the distressing torment of suicide left for the survivors also fits.

SPOILERS

I read the script and just got back from seeing the movie.

They changed how Michael dies.. he committed suicide instead. I really can't understand why they made this change to be honest... To me the ending in the movie seemed a little random. In the script it was linked, it made more sense.

Anyone agree?

I also think it would have packed more of a punch if they showed Ruby writing the date on the blackboard like in the script rather than it just being up there already.

Other than that...Rob was as always amazing!

@ KiyaRaven - Well said. I think the key to many of these negative reviews amounts to one of your lines: "Methinks jealousy is a little green eyed reviewer."

You nailed it.

When the world has seen the movie, let's compare notes again. This reviewer will so be with those marginal reviewers who can't and didn't see the forest for the trees.

This reveiwer is just total A$$! I think it took a lot of guts for Rob to take on such a role when he could have taken the easy route and gone with the first tweeny thing anyone threw at him. He's obviously selective about what he chooses ad it's actors like that who become legends. He'll show 'em! Anyone can see that he did a great job and it is smart for him to choose such a role because no one wants to see someone with his tlent get stuck in the downward spiral of type casting.

Kudos to Rob he's excellent!

We really can't please everybody and there will be a lot of prejudice for Rob as there have always been since the Twilight phenom started.

I just think that he will always appear to try to do better acting (although he is a good actor already) for others who just doesn't want to accept him more than just the vampire from Twilight.

I agree that Rob's performance as Edward Cullen was not stiff judging because I have read and understood the character from the book.I think it was difficult to portray since a lot of times Edward demonstrates a plethora of emotions all at the same time, which is exquisitely explained in the book.
