Twilight Breaking Dawn News – Sofia Coppola & Van Sant Asked To Direct?

EW is reporting that while we still don’t really know when or how (in terms of format–1 or 2 films) Breaking Dawn – the fourth chapter of the “Twilight Saga” – will arrive, we do know that Summit Entertainment is looking for a director. They are not at all aiming low or going for the obscure, as the three names being offered up are Sofia Coppola, Gus Van Sant, and Bill Condon. Only Van Sant has been confirmed to have actually been approached.

Back in September we showed you this video of Robert Pattinson naming Van Sant as someone he’d like to see helm Breaking Dawn.

Kristen Stewart actually confirmed that Van Sant had been approached in this talk with MTV

Source BSC Review and thanks to Teri for the tip.

What has Van Sant done? I think the movie Milk comes to mind. But I have never seen it. Any one here knowledgable in directors?

Gus Van Sant is considered amongst the best directors nowadays. He has done many films, including Milk, Good Will Huning (the one that Ben Aflek and Matt Damon won the Original Screenplay Oscar), Elephant (a movie to receive Palm D'Or in the Cannes Film festival), My Own Private Idaho and also a part of Paris Je T'aime (The one with the two gay men). And he's also Prtland - based. I still think it's a long shot having him direct BD, and a very weird choice, but it would be a great idea to me to se something so different!

i hope they figure this out soon

Those are serious directors. My hope would be that they wouldn't change the book to their vision and not ours. I can't imagine Sophia directing BD, but I think she would definitely get the romance and the honeymoon scene. I read somewhere that Peter Jackson has been approached, not sure if that is true or not, but that would be like a LOTR/Twi mash-up and probably pretty cool.

Good morning/afternoon/evening.

ha, I LOVE the look Dakota gives when he names off the "possible" directors, she looks like she just saw a ghost! and of course, fabulous Kristen kept it real with her chill attitude about it all. But that Dakota look...priceless :)

and yes Gus would be amazing for BD. Especially since there are much more drama and mature (deeper) thoughts, events, etc in BD (ie: they get married have a baby, she becomes a vamp, etc). He would be great at showing these new aspects of the story and beautifully unfold this new life Belle and Edward embark....ahhh! So excited for BD!!!

GVS sounds like a real possiblity...

Gus Van Sant's people also say that he has been approaced. I am not surprised that Kristen and Rob feel the same way about Gus Van Sant, They seem to be in sync about a lot of things where work is concerned. One of their many connections.

It really is cool. Van Sant is one of my favourite directors, and Coppola's definitely my favourite female director. I don't think Van Sant would be right for Breaking Dawn, though. I do think Coppola would be a great choice, if she'd be interested, which I highly doubt. I think it could use a female touch, and she'd definitely stay true to the books and help it raise its reputation. So yes, I'd definitely be thrilled to see her directing it. Of course, if Van Sant would say yes it wouldn't be a letdown either, but I doubt the artsy indie style would bring across the essence of the story.. we've already seen it go wrong in Twilight. But who knows.. perhaps he can find the soul of the series and bring it across exactly right.

VAN SANT!!! YESS!! I almost died when I heard sofia coppola. Love Van and all his work...PLEASE GOD!!

Directing Breaking Dawn will definitely be a daunting task, whoever signs on. I think Coppola would be great. And the saga would be blessed if Sant hopped aboard. I don't think you can really go wrong either way, both are great directors.

Whoever does it... I want long.. drawn out ROMANCE. For all the things that I didn't like about Breaking Dawn, they'd better make up for by giving us something else than fade-to-black on Isle Esme, just sayin'...

OH MAN! VAN SANT THAT WOULD ROCK! He direceted a music video for one of my favorite bands plus his movies are just STELLAR! I also agree with many of the rest of you, I think Van Sant could deliver well the mature turn BD will have to take conciderng the subject matter and all. It has to take that turn it can't be too light just for the sake of the "tweens" they would loose the most important parts of the story if they try to keep it too tame. I also would not be oposed to Peter Jackson I think he could do it very well it'd be interesting to see what direction he would take things but I highly doubt he end up being the director. From what I've seen of the Eclipse trailer I'm impressed with David Slade so far I think the actors really liked working with him. Chris was okay and I really love New Moon but I think he could have done better. I was most dissapoint at the Edward scenes that were cut out concidering how little his presence in that book was to being with then they chopped it even more. Oh well we've all come to expect such things when books are converted to films. I'm so excited about ECLIPSE! June seems so far away!

Van Sant is a great director. But, maybe (maybe...) a woman would work better for BD.
And Sofia C. could be a wonderful choice.

With all its 'flaws', I love CH's Twilight. She did not miss the subtle details of B&E's 'falling in love' and 'developing romance'. She is a woman, she got it. Maybe she had a small budget; maybe she is not a wonderful director ~ yes, the movie has 'flaws', but the 'essence' is there.
And, aww, I love it!

I still vote for Kathryn Bigelow.
Oscar winner now.
But she directed Point Break, Strange Days - both really good action flicks with a love story.

Gus did some great ones in the 90's.

See the one called 4 boys in a Volvo??
How about one Vampire in a Volvo! lol

Loved Good Will Hunting, My Private Idaho.

All good directors - all rather odd choices for this material... Was that one for Kristen, one for Rob and one for Taylor? lol

I don't see the names of two I thought they were approaching, but they may be off the table due to price, or conflicts. Or not for promo...

At least it's confirmation BD is in the next stage of pre-production...

I hope will be Gus Van Sant, I loved his movies.
Coppola is a bad actress but a good director, her "Marie Antoinette" will good done and perhaps with her sensibility for the love story it will be good but Van Sant for me it´s the best option.

It´s clear that Rob and Kristen hace a lot of common points, the same way to build their carreers with independants movies against blockbusters, they want to make them step by step, etc...

I really really doubt Van Sant would direct BD. At least I hope he doesn't. I really dislike BD.

Luxie said...

@ Capitu: Absolutely agree!

Twilight wasn't perfect and the budget was small but CathyHardy didn't skimp on the Bella/Edward connection. I feel the same way as you, she captured the intimate love story so accurately for me. So perhaps a woman director might be a better choice. Although, Slant is probably one of the best directors out there today. His movies poignant and unfold beautifully. So lucky for us its win, win situation.

Like people say: 'Great minds think alike'... °smile°

Any of these names will 'rock', in my humble opinion...
But I just can't get over the way CH portrayed B&E's romance. His first appearance in Twilight? My life changed forever when that man entered that cafeteria... in slow-motion... And his smirk!? GAH!
I had my 'Bella's' moment right there in the theater!

Well, I guess we'll see about BD... And we'll love it to death, anyway.
Have a good day, Luxie!
Muah!
