VG's review of Remember Me (4 out of 6 on the dice)

Review by Øystein David Johansen

Translation by Maryann Bjordal

”Angry young man”

Robert Pattinson as a young, sweaty and angry New Yorker is so far much better than an anemic vampire hero with high hair, but he cannot escape the difficult love.

In ”Remember Me” he combines anger and vulnerability in a way that will impress far more than the teenage girls that has been following him since the ”Twilight” phenomenon hit the big time. Pattinson captures the essence of ”a drifty young man” with bravura, in a movie that moves between the border of the shamelessly melodramatic and the tiresome pretentiousness.

He portrays Tyler, a son of a rich man with a tendency to get into trouble, of a family on the brink of collapse after the oldest son's suicide. A silly bet with his roommate Aidan leads him to Ally - from the opposite side of the social specter, but she also has deep wounds in her soul after her mother being killed ten years ago. Will two daddy complexes be healed and will the young disillusioned find their spark of life together?

This twist of the ”When Harry Met Sally” bet is an intrigue tried out many times before - in far less vain varieties (”She's All That” in 1999 is one example). ”Remember Me tries partially too hard to distance itself from these with Ghandi quotes via voice-over and dialogue that is so clever it has got to be written. Other times - like when Ally is brought along to one of New York's most snobby restaurants for the first time - the observations are more elegant and subtle.

Both the family drama and does work anyways when the vanity is toned down - and slowly but surely we start to care about what happens with these characters. Why is a pompous end point of enormous patriotic dimensions added is totally incomprehensible. It still doesn't matter to destroy the impression of a solid youth drama - mostly for those of you who laughs at regular ”Romcoms".

Hey RPL!!

Iluvthemovies said...

Ooh, you naughty naughty ladies. I love it. I take offense to the critic stating only teenagers watch Twilight. "Hello" critic I am way older than a teenager and I know many ladies and women who are past the age of 19 who adore this man and his movies. I wish all these critics would stop putting this reference in their reviews of
Robert's movies. Love this photo and I agree with all you ladies about looking up those shorts. Hot flash starting....

jc(britlover) said...

Thank you, Maryann!

Hey, NB's!!

LOL! When I looked up his shorts, I swear I saw something looking back at me....or am I going crazy from this dry spell. hahahahaha
Gotta put my imagination to good use when I get the opportunity.

Hi guys again,
& thanks for the nice & very welcoming responds/comments to my
1th "Robsessed diary" yesterday.
"The show must go on" anyway, so... Here we go again...

ROBSESSED DIARY 2010.04.22.

It seems pretty quiet here today - is it the famouos drought before the warmly anticipated "Eclipse"-trailor tomorrow - probably so...
And thanks Maryann for the translation - u can be very happy to finally have the opportunity to see "Remember Me" - u'll adore it, I hope. I most sure did.
This film has become a very significant part of me; just to sound a little cheap & cheesy & romantic & silly - it's become a part of my heart & (yeah, THE word again) my soul... (and u just must know I'm not very easy to get really impressed or infatuated)
I'm so NOT a good fan-material. I'm so NOT a (R)obsessed-type of person.
I'm so NOT someone who just falls head over heels over a celebrity.
I'm even not so into Hollywood-movies and especially some pretty & superficial movie-stars. I'm not, never was, never will be.
I'm a very sane, serious & almost boring person. A geek, a freak, an old soul (that has nothing to do with actual age, u know...)who adores classical books, classical music, foreign languages, writing my own stuff & dreaming my own weird dreams about getting them published sometimes...
I love-love everything/everyone with tradition & history...
An odd human being whose three favourite books r:
1.Dostoievsky's "Idiot" (help!!!how to spell a Russian name in English - he is Dostojevskij anyway...)
2.W.Golding's "Lord of the Flies"
and
3. my English-Swedish Dictionary!
A funny/freaky prick whose favourite actors r:
Sir Anthony Hopkins & Denzel Washington...
And the fav music is a Russian again - Stravinsky (gosh, I mean Stravinskij)
And the fav city I've been to is def St. Petersburg... (and Wien)
Told u so... a real pain-in-the-ass bore/traditionsfreak...

AND THEN suddenly it happens...
I mean THIS mesmerizing human being happens...
HIS SOULFUL EYES & HEARTWARMING SMILE & GOOFY HUMOR & DELICATE OLD SOUL & UNHUMAN BEAUTY happen...
And HIS MUSIC happens...
And EDWARD CULLEN & "REMEMBER ME" happen...
And suddenly I must realize that the emperor is so-so sadly naked and this poor old geek is so-so hopelessly lost...

P.S. I've been watching a very-very good vid the last few days;
it's called RP/"NOBODY SAID IT WAS EASY" - just watch & tell me your opinion about it.
It's sad & almost tragic & very well maid - about how the crazy fame & fans & paps have changed Rob*s life...
Just shocking to see how much he's been changed since his first movies; his wonderful, childish, optimistic smile is gone, his eyes r harder, harsher, older...
But it's the same beauty & same soul... (some delicious close ups from "Remember Me" here as well)
And yes,
HE IS INDEED THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING I'VE EVER SEEN/EXPERIENCED IN MY WHOLE LIFE - WITHOUT ANY DOUBT...
Amen to that...

ModestyPatch..you are a hoot. Laughed my head off then had to rub the crick out of my neck.

RM has made almost 47M divided by 2 is,just round off to 24M less 16M
leaves a profit of 8M. Rob should be extremely proud of that and the DVD isn't out yet which will add more. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tried to translate the article, but never got so close to the point as you did Maryann! Really good.. :) Gotta love this man... :D

I love this picture - he looks so sweet and into being with Ally! He's a very convincing actor in the LOVE department.

lallieb said...

@fnd188, Wow, you express it all so well and English is not your first language, amazing. I feel the same way. Something very special about this guy that turned our heads and our hearts, beyond rational explanation.

@cullenlover, every time I see your avi, I pause and laugh, love it. But just got to ask, is it a manip or real?

Rominiwi said...

I hate to say this, but here in my country (Chile) the reviews were awful :(

Afortunately, nobody reads them x)

twmmy said...

Rominiwi, so you have a mission, to make the mouth-saying for the movie. In my country RM will be from 6th of may, and I'm curious, what the hungarian critics will say about this movie. I'm on my way to tell them "go to hell" if critics were bad.

jessegirl said...

Rum...Guess it's time I gave up on the f*cking critics and, as most here are doing today, just commented on the glory that is Rob. Although I did keeping flapping my lips over there again.

CaroleUK...yeah, the hairy legs.
He is the god of hair. Period.

fnd188...Not done against your will though. Just through sheer charisma. That's our Rob. He fells them all.
Dostoyevsky -check- but Crime and Punishment.
But prefer Mahler, Loreena McKennitt, Peter Gabriel, Blues.

Yes, Rominiwi and twmmy...
Spread the word about RM. xo
