More information on Robert Pattinson's newest project, Hold On To Me

Hold On To Me made Variety's list of films that has AFM (American Film Market) buzzing and Film Nation released more information about the film.

Photobucket From FilmNation:
FilmNation will handle international sales and distribution on Academy Award® winning director James Marsh’s (Man on Wire) Hold On To Me starring Academy Award® Nominee Carey Mulligan (Drive, The Great Gatsby, An Education) and Robert Pattinson (Twilight, Cosmopolis). Hold On To Me is written by Brad Ingelsby (Out of the Furnace) and is an electrifying thriller based on the extraordinary true story of a femme fatale who kidnaps and ransoms the town’s richest man. The film will be produced by Alexandra Milchan alongside Todd Field and Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales and Mark Roybal.
Mulligan plays Nancy, a small town girl who callously leaves her boyfriend Jimmy (Pattinson) behind to chase a modelling career in New York City, breaking his heart in the process. To Nancy’s surprise, New York isn’t impressed by her and at 26, she’s back home waiting tables at the local diner. When she gets word that Jimmy has become a wealthy and successful criminal in Chicago, she tracks him down with a view to winning his affections, only to find crushing rejection. Fuelled by jealousy and an unquenchable thirst for fortune, Nancy finds Danny, a naïve pawn she can seduce and manipulate to her own ends and together they embark on a life of crime. Success comes fast, and leaves faster but nothing and no one will stand in the way of Nancy’s naked, dangerous and deadly ambition.
The producers commented, "Glen Basner and his team are simply the best in the business. We are elated to be partnering with FilmNation in bringing to life this stranger than fiction, true crime story."
Sales will commence at the upcoming American Film Market.
FilmNation’s Glen Basner said, “Hold On To Me is a compelling and sexy modern day Bonnie and Clyde story that we’re excited to introduce to buyers at AFM. Carey Mulligan is certain to deliver one of the most memorable femme fatale performances in cinematic history.”
This is clearly Carey's vehicle but how great does it sound?? I'm so excited for Rob to be a part of it. Hell, I'm excited for Rob to be a part of all his upcoming films. He's working with great artists and the stories are so compelling. We have much to look forward to, DR. :)

Yes...quite.

I've just watched Shame.  Excellent performances but I had expected more from the movie itself.  I don't mind the depressing mood, but the film just showed very (and sometimes too) slowly the characters, not their background, why they were the way they were.

I didn't like Australia just because of the overdoing.  I've read recently The great Gatsby and saw the trailer.  I don't find Di Caprio well casted for this charismatic role.  I picture Gatsly more tall, younger too.  I can also imagine Sarah Gadon better in the role of Daisy than Carey, but we'll see.

Gozde said...

Can you expound further on what more you might have been expecting? I saw the movie and was very moved, so am just curious. :-) (Well, ok, am also a Fassbender fan...There, I admitted it!) To me, it was more of a snippet showing the life of a less-publicized addiction, but also the path people take when there's a lack of emotional support in upbringing. Both brother and sister showed the damage in different ways. Yes, we don't know what happened in their childhood, but we can definitely tell it wasn't idyllic based on their life and choices. Somehow, the not knowing why they are the way they are is more fascinating, I guess. ;-)

Gozde said...

Well, Di Caprio is not much older than the suggested age, but I think Gatsby is hard to cast. My impression from the novel is that he is somewhat of a cipher on whom people project, with none really knowing him at all, so I do think you need someone with charisma, but who can also suggest the wannabee underneath, out of his depth with the fundamental selfishness of those born into wealth. I think Carey will be fine, but Sarah would be an interesting choice, too...It will be a Baz's movie either way...lol

Gozde said...

Well, I think you should "pull up your socks," said with a disapproving sniff...silliness will not be tolerated...unless you make a noise like a duck, you know. ;-)

Well many people walked out during Cosmopolis, because "nothing happened".  Never agreed with that, a lot happened, there was an evolution on different levels.  I didn't see much evolution here.  The movie showed a fragment of Brandon's life (that was his name, no?).  Sexual addiction might be still a taboe, but there's not that much you can show in a movie apart from masturbation and affectionless sex. So I had expected they would go further than that and focus on possible causes why people become like that. For that I felt left in the cold.  They showed it and while he tried to be in controle of his life, his sister wasn't, obviously and disturbed his life.
Sometimes I had difficulties to understand the length of scenes they showed: why did they let his sister sing the whole song which took a lot of screen time?  I liked the scene but not the length of it.  Some scenes that let him walking in the streets were long too and with no reason IMHO other than showing the desperation and lonelyness, but the movie was drenched (sp?) in it, no need to accentuate it more. Also I didn't feel a connection on emotional level with the characters.  I don't mind that because the disconnection with the characters can have its meaning, as Cosmopolis showed well too.
I had the idea that something sexual had happened between brother and sister when they were young and if not, there had been another kind of sexual abuse, which isn't explored.  Even at the end, I didn't felt very touched 'cause I knew what had happened.  Maybe 'cause I've known scenes like that in real life (jobwise), IDK.  My friend, who saw the movie with me, is an amateur of indie quality movies and she was less touched than I was.
Shame just showed me once more that a movie experience is always a matter of personal taste.  While I never understood why people left during screenings of Cosmopolis, I'd understand better if people had done it during Shame.  Not me though, the brilliant performances alone made the move worth the watch.  Fassbender is on his way for his first Oscar, that's for sure.

My 'disgruntled cat' is better than my 'duck', although a head-cold helps with the duck... :-D

Gozde said...

I'm glad you like the performances, even if overall the movie didn't work for you. :-) Thanks also for taking the time to respond!
I too was surprised they left the whole song in...as well as focusing almost completely on her face the whole time. Always wonder if directors do that on purpose to possibly make the audience uncomfortable, or if they really just like their idea for that scene, and get so caught up they go a little overboard...
If you see a lot of similar scenes in your job, I can totally understand why you'd be looking for more background on the why-they-turned-out-this-way.
Since I don't have to deal with that sort of thing in my day-to-day life, perhaps as an indie movie, it appealed to me more the way a photo, taken at just the right moment in time, can grab you and make you stop and stare in stupification.

Gozde said...

Much quackery, methinks...lol

Gozde said...

The trailer shows the women, dressed in "jazzmode" which is right but I had pictured Daisy more like an angelic beauty, ethereal (right word?) and Sarah has this fine facial structure and pale skin.  Carey as Daisy seems to be more "tough".  And Gatsby, I thought, had to be a charismatic, handsome and also mysterious man.  I like Di Caprio as an actor but unfortunately I don't find him that handsome anymore.  I'll wait until the movie is on DVD to see if Baz has made a good adaptation.  Rob would've been the best Gatsby though  LOL

Gozde said...

I think, Looky, that was probably what frustrated me: that I had the idea that there was a meaning why the director let her sing the song completely and why some scenes were so slow, but I couldn't find this meaning.
Also this character wasn't a prototype for people with sexual addiction. He was aware of his trauma and his huge problem, many aren't or refuse to see what they need to see. I've been confronted with people with suicidal tendencies so I wasn't that shocked when he found her 'cause I was more or less expecting it.
I like your comparison with the photo though.  When you look at it that way I admit that the movie had a lot of beautiful artistic shots, very powerful and raw.

Gozde said...

If you see pics of Ginevra King and Fitzgerald's wife, Zelda, both of whom are a similar 'type' and said to be the basis of characters like Daisy, Carey has a certain resemblance. Rob might be a bit too subtle for Baz, but I'm sure he could play it... ;-)

Shan - I'm sorry to take so long to get back to you. With all the Rob goodness these days I totally forgot to check my emails so only just got your message. Thanks so much for the offer of FF PDFs. I really appreciate it. I only have 3 and you're the one who gave me MoTU as my first. I have read so many it's become a bit of a blur. What are some of your favourites that you have copies of? It would be nice to reread and keep some of the classics. Can't remember them all now. I know there were lots of good ones. I appreciate anything you think is good.

Gozde said...
