Robert Pattinson talks about his future plans, Mission: Blacklist, show business and more

Photobucket Rob spoke to Metro about Mission: Blacklist, the choice to film in Iraq, listening to the negative, show biz culture and more. Good quotes and I like him joking about trying to find a film that more than one person will see. He's cute, loving his indies but wanting something with mainstream appeal too. We'll be there whatever it is. :) Here's his portion excerpted from Metro:
Starring as Edward Cullen, the moody vampire at the center of the "Twilight" series, Robert Pattinson has achieved worldwide stardom -- something that doesn't sit well with the British actor. "I have a weird mental disorder where the only thing I can ever hear is the negative stuff," he tells us. "It doesn't matter how many people say anything complimentary, it's always the negative."
You can't blame him. This summer, the 26 year-old was at the center of some pretty negative headlines: His girlfriend and co-star Kristen Stewart reportedly cheated on him with her "Snow White" director Rupert Sanders. Are they on? Off? Rather than obsess about it, Pattinson would rather focus on his career after this last film in the series, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ---Part 2." Of his fame, he says: "Maybe I feel like I don't particularly deserve it yet, so I really want to do something worthwhile in my head and struggle for a long time."
What drives him
As evidenced by recent choices -- including David Cronenberg's challenging "Cosmopolis," which featured him getting a prostate exam -- he's not afraid of risk. "I signed up for a lot of stuff in the last year. I was really fixated on working with a lot of people who are kind of dangerous," he says. "The business part of show business has really just taken a big s-- on the show aspect of it, and so I think anyone who has any visibility should be trying to do something that is really, really subversive. I think it would be interesting trying to get really subversive stuff into the mainstream. You're in the cinema not just as a consumer but as a participant."
It's that sensibility that led him to sign up for the lead in "Mission: Blacklist," a film to be made in Iraq next year. "That's probably out of anybody's comfort zone," Pattinson offers of the film, which is based on a true story. "It's about this guy call Eric Maddox who was an Army interrogator who almost single-handedly found Saddam Hussein. No one really knows the story of it, and the story's absolutely amazing and kind of hilarious in some ways and bizarre."
Comfort zonesThat project teams Pattinson with French director Jean-Stephane Sauvaire, who used real Liberian child soldiers for his last film. "I think that's like his thing," says Pattinson. "I wanted him to be in his comfort zone, so we were both pushing, saying we need to shoot this in Iraq -- that's the whole point."
You can tell where his passions lie by the fact that, during this interview, the actor talks more about "Mission: Blacklist" than "Twilight." But promotion for "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" must be done. The story finds his Edward and Stewart's Bella protecting their child from killer vampires. It's already predicted to be the highest-grossing effort in the series. And the actor is busy lining up another high-profile project, lest he lose his ability to get the riskier ones made. "This year I'm thinking I should probably try to do a movie which at least one person will see," he says, "so I'm trying to figure that out now."
MariaUK proposed that we do a book club here for MB. We were going to have one on the Mission: Blacklist blog that Kate and I run but we're all much chattier over here, aren't we. ;) Keep a look out if you're interested. It will likely start up after the holiday season. In the meantime, if you haven't already, you can purchase the book HERE

MB starts slow, but picks up in such a way, at least for me, that I couldn't put it down! This film will be ALL Robert! I'm not happy it's being filmed in Iraq, but can see why he's excited about it.

I've always looked forward to Rob's post-Twilight career but never anticipated the dazzling lineup of directors and projects he has now. Am quite looking forward to a bit of the old ultra-violence, the darker palette. We've seen hints of it of course but it's never really been explored. And the mainstream sure could use the subversion. ;-)

A book discussion sounds great. I bought the book awhile ago but I have not read it yet (maybe holiday break). Wish he was not going to Iraq.

This is good, this is really really good, not surprised at all about his decisions ! Think about the words that show up in this interview as : subversive, fixated on working with dangerous people, getting out of his comfort zone, responsibility, and last but not least saying to us, we are in the cinema not only as a consumer but as an participant ! Beautiful words that cannot be more true !We definately need to get away from that need to be entertained and brainwashed at the same time , but that ofcourse means that we as movie goers need to open up towards new, less mainstream things and dare challenge ourselves !
This is going to take an huge effort of the individual person to do this, thinking of the the range of films that are made today, peopleare going to have to search more for "smaller" films, and there has got to be a wider selection too, not just the blockbusters who are mainly made to entertain, and not make people participate ......
I do wish with all my heart that Rob can help out ,via his status in the business..Good luck Rob and thank you for being so genuine and brave .

read a book that isn't fanfiction? really?!!! that would make a welcome change actually. am definitely in if it goes ahead. will ask for it for christmas. excited about all robs coming projects and i am very pleased to hear that he is looking for something mainstream too.

OK, let's think of negative things to say about Robert so he will feel more comfortable. Robert is so horrible-y talented, it makes all of us watching sick (from admiration). He is stupid-ly handsome. His personality is sickening-ly cute and sweet. Ok...that was silly, but the best I could do.

I was unsure I would get through a story like this, not my usual choice of reading!! a little slow at the beginning but was surprised at how engrossed I got then couldn't put it down !!

"The business part of show business has really just taken a big s-- on the show aspect of it" so damn true

let me just point out rob's modesty for a sec. notice he mentions that he doesn't feel he deserves his fame yet... let's be real here, he definitely deserves his fame and so much more! but maybe that's why we all love him so much. because he hasn't let his fame go to his head the way it does for so many others. i hope for rob's sake that his way of thinking never changes; not because he doesn't deserve his fame, but because that's why he's loved by so many. aside from his immense talent (which is no doubt abundant) i believe he gets noticed by directors for this reason as well. a favorable actor will draw a large audience.

i'm looking forward to supporting rob's future career and i hope the experience continues to be just as exciting. we love him and all his adorkable hotness!!

i didn't get that bit until you wrote it here, i thought he said a big show on the show aspect of it! makes perfect sense now thanks!

If I was any better Sean, I'd have to take something for it! ;D
lol
you are welcome

Good to know. You should get whatever it is bottled, packaged and sold if it's making you feel this good. You can brand it "saucy minx". Heh. :))

Gozde said...

and it would fly off the shelves ... until someone has an adverse reaction and the next thing you know ... we'll be seeing commercials on television...."If you or a loved one has ever taken "saucy minx" and had any of these side effects ... contact the law offices of Swindle, Crook, and Steele for a settlement today!"
lmfao ;D

A book club for MB sounds great! I just ordered the book last Friday & should receive it on Wednesday. Will get to reading it after the Thanksgiving visitors depart. Hope the book club happens, I would love to participate!

I am so excited I finally figured out this Disqus thing and got an Avi. I also decided it was time to commit to a name. I was formerly guest, RobsCharming or AnyGentlemenLeft. I feel so official. :) After seeing BD2, all my Twilight friends are so sad to see the series end. Not me! I don't see it as an end but a new beginning. I loved Twilight for introducing me to Rob and I love him as Edward but I'm excited to see him in new and exciting roles. I think I am most looking forward to Mission Blacklist even though I wish they would film somewhere other than the Middle East. I just hope this movie doesn't get postponed because they are holding out for Iraq. I would rather they film somewhere else and get the movie made than to see it never come about.

This is really eerie. I really don't mean to sound like a weirdo (which usually means I will sound like one) but I feel like Rob and I are very much kindred spirits... he like box sets, honey boo boo, etc. and I have that same "mental disorder"... I have had it ever since I can remember. I feel like I don't have the capacity to accept compliments or hear them. and when I do, I just freeze like it wasn't meant for me and then try to direct it to someone else or subtly shoot it down. I think that's why I love Rob so much- I can relate to him.

But Rob, you really do deserve it! Please don't let anyone tell you any different! You are fantastic at what you do! and fantastic at being you! And don't go to Iraq, please! It's getting crazier by the second over there!:(

Gozde said...

You expressed this beautifully Lotte! I can only agree with everything you say :D
I feel that following Rob´s career offers me so many interesting inspiration for my own life - his movies (and all it´s directors), the books and music he loves, his POV´s and last but not least the sometimes interesting, sometimes funny, sometimes smart or heartwarming comments on this blog :)))

Gozde said...

While I love the idea of Rob being subversive, filming in Iraq at the moment is not a good idea, mostly with the new events between Israel and Palestine, it's really not safe there, and I don't see any insurance company letting it be done. I have read the book and it mostly takes place indoors, so they can recreate that in studios. As for location spots, they can shoot in Morocco.

Gozde said...

Hope you are right because the idea of Rob shooting in Iraq is very scary!

Gozde said...

I feel that too, we are on a journey with Rob, and at the same time developing our own skills and knowledge
as a side benefit ! :-D
