“He’s Got An Amazing Voice & His Songs Are Really Contemporary” ~ Guy Pearce On Robert Pattinson

“He’s Got An Amazing Voice & His Songs Are Really Contemporary” ~ Guy Pearce On Robert Pattinson

The Weekly Review chatted to Guy Pearce recently where he spoke about his music and writing songs while on set. Of course Rob came into the conversation.
I have visions of these two during The Rover filming sitting around a campfire in the outback with their guitars singing and writing songs. Oh to be a fly on a guitar.

 photo YahooUKRobertPattinsonGuyPearce.jpg

'Pearce found film shoots the perfect place to write songs: “No dogs to walk, no family to visit”. But it was always done somewhat in secret. Which begs the question; who else is in this secret songwriter society? Who is the best actor slash songwriter too self-conscious to “come out”? “Rob Pattinson,” Pearce says, naming the Twilight megastar he recently acted alongside in The Rover.

“He’s got an amazing voice and his songs are really contemporary.”'

Thanks Nancy for the heads up!

"Robert Pattinson Will Become The Biggest Movie Star In The World" ~ Guy Pearce

"Robert Pattinson Will Become The Biggest Movie Star In The World" ~ Guy Pearce

You had to love the whole bromance that Rob & Guy Pearce had going while making The Rover and while doing the promo last year.
They made such a good team. You could really feel their connection in the movie and you could tell that they became really good friends.

 photo 1jpg_large-1.jpg

In an interview with Yahoo Guy gives us yet another reason to love him ........
"Guy Pearce expects Robert Pattinson to become the "biggest movie star in the world".

The 47-year-old actor appears alongside the 'Twilight' star in thriller film 'The Rover' and he believes the hunk's great looks and superb acting ability can enable him to become the best in the industry if he puts his mind to it.

He said: "I'd met Robert briefly one Comic Con a couple of years ago and told him he was great - I'd only seen one of his films, 'Water For Elephants'.

"He's as interested in delving into character as much, if not more, than I am.

"I thought, 'This guy's totally my cup of tea.' Then I put two and two together and went, 'Hang on, he looks like that, he's that famous and he's this good .... Seriously, if he doesn't become the biggest movie star in the world there's something wrong.'

"Amazing as an actor and amazing looking - what a combination."

Now that most of us have seen The Rover, we can really enjoy some of these longer interviews and promo materials.

This was conducted during LA promo and David talks in depth about The Rover and working with Guy and Rob. Give yourself a half hour to watch David talk about the film and more. He jokes about Rob in the beginning and goes in detail with thoughtful compliments about half way through ("I immediately liked him." "Not just affable but available guy, obviously intelligent.")

David Michôd talks Robert Pattinson: "He's obviously intelligent and really wonderfully emotionally available"

What a great read. GREAT read. Directors continue to have amazing things to say about Rob. His talent, his intelligence, his work ethic, his character....they are always praised above and beyond the typical praise.

David Michôd spoke to Twitch about The Rover and this is the excerpt about Rob.

 photo rover1.jpg

Twitch Film:

TWITCH: In contrast, there is Pattinson's character, who I think is extraordinary in this film. Can you talk about bringing him into the role? How did you work with him on attenuating his performance, making sure it didn't get too broad?

MICHÔD: In a way, the answer to both questions is that Robert came in and tested for me and his tests were just extraordinary.

I, like everyone else, didn't know what he was capable of. Certainly his previous work didn't give you a clear indicator.

I met him before I even knew I was going to make The Rover, and there was something about him that I really liked. He's obviously intelligent and really wonderfully emotionally available.

When [Pattinson] came in to audition for me, he came in with a really beautifully defined and sophisticated reading of the character that seemed from the outset to avoid all of those possible moments of caricature that that character could so easily slip into.

How did Pattinson get hooked into the project?

I had a meeting with him maybe a year before I made the movie and it became immediately apparent to me in that meeting that he not only loved Animal Kingdom but had seen all of the shorts that I had made with my friends. He had beyond that a really eclectic, sophisticated interest in cinema. He was actively looking for interesting things to do and actively looking to meet interesting filmmakers.

Had he done any of his Cronenberg work when you first started working together?

Yes, I had seen Cosmopolis. I had even had a phone conversation with Cronenberg to see what working with Rob was like generally. [With] Cosmopolis, that is another character that is quite brooding and still in a way that's not similar to the stuff he does in Twilight. It didn't give me a clear indication that he could do the 180 degree shift that I was going to ask him to do on The Rover.

I always needed to see an audition. He was willing to do it because he knew that he wanted to play the character and that he needed to work hard to get it.

I love that whole notion of you as a director in Australia just calling up Cronenberg and asking him for advice. Is that a common thing? I picture some secret handshake between directors where you exchange private numbers.

I think in the world of filmmakers and generally those kinds of phone calls are reasonably easy to facilitate because they're reasonably important. I didn't want to ask David whether or not Rob was a good actor. I felt that I had seen that in the tests and long auditions that he had done for me. What I wanted to know was what he was like as a human being on set because those things can be important. David shared his experience which turned out to be much the same as mine, that he was delightful and hard-working.

Guy Pearce talks about Robert Pattinson: "This guy is going to have just the most incredible career"

Guy Pearce talks about Robert Pattinson: "This guy is going to have just the most incredible career"

Excerpt from Den of Geek:

Were you guys uncomfortable during the shoot and did you want to be, to help get into the spirit of the film?

Well, there is a certain level of uncomfortability that's necessary obviously because you're out there in the heat and it's dusty, but I find it awe inspiring as well because that landscape is incredible. You feel like you're just away from everything. You're away from all the noise of the city and all those things that you sort of live your life by these days, iPads and iPhones and all the i's, you know, all that stuff slowly didn't work the further north we got. The phones didn't work and then we sort of lost Internet connection. So it's sort of tough but it's equally kind of inspiring because you're aware of it being put down on film and it being part of this film that you're making. Every kind of difficult and fascinating location we got to, you would just think, "Oh wow, this is going to be incredible on film." We had pretty hot weather but we had breaks in the weather too occasionally, like it would rain and cool down for a bit so we kind of felt like we were okay. I mean it was pretty brutal and pretty hot a lot of the time, and I know it was hot for Rob because he wasn't so used to it. I've done a couple of films in the desert now. I love it out there.

How was it working with Rob? His fame maybe has overshadowed his talent to some degree.

Well, I mean, that performance that you see him deliver in the film -- I detected that on the first or second day or whenever I went to set and watched him work, I was like, "Wow this is going to be great." I mean, Rob is a pretty quietly spoken guy. I think it is difficult for him dealing with all of the publicity that he gets and all that sort of stuff and so he just sort of wants to get out of the way and not get hassled. You don't get too much of a sense of who he is and then he starts performing and you just think, "Wow, this kid's incredible." And you think about the popularity that he has and how amazing he looks, and you couple that with that talent and you think, "Wow, this guy is going to have just the most incredible career." He has an amazing career already, but for him to now be able to just string together one more interesting role after another I think will be fantastic.

He was great to work with. He was so relieved to be out there and not be hassled by paparazzi and press and fans and stuff that he had a really great time. We didn't really know each other very well, in fact we didn't know each other at all and just slowly got to know each other through the course of the film, which was good because we're not meant to know each other at the beginning anyway. We all just sort of slipped into it kind of nicely. There was a nice respect for David and for the movie he was making and for each other, and the characters we were playing. I think what was interesting was once I started to realize what that dynamic between us was going to be -- I got it on the page on an intellectual level, but once I started to see what Rob was doing and how needy and vulnerable the character was, then I really knew what was going to work as far as what I offered up and what I delivered with him. It's always interesting when you are reading relationships in a script, the transition between that and the actual doing of it, once you start meeting actors. Something can go wrong and another actor would be horrible or they could think you're horrible and you just think this is going to be really difficult. But then other times you just go wow, this whole thing is opening up now. Now I get it so it's interesting.

Guy Pearce talks about Robert Pattinson: "The best thing about Rob is that he is a really great actor"

YAY! I've been hoping for this! As Guy Pearce gears up to promote Iron Man 3, we'll get some info about Rob and The Rover because Guy will be in the press more.

 photo Reybert.jpgFrom the Daily Telegraph:
Robert Pattinson is the real deal, according to Guy Pearce, his co-star in The Rover. The two actors have just spent seven weeks together in the South Australian Outback, filming director David Michod's hotly-anticipated follow-up to Animal Kingdom, with Pearce waxing lyrical about his co-stars ''beautiful face''
''The best thing about Rob is that he is a really great actor,'' says Pearce. ''Watching the rushes back, you go: 'OK, he is just going to be fantastic'.''
The Twilight star plays white trailer trash from the southern states of America in the futuristic western, set in an apocalyptic near future where society has broken down in the wake of a severe financial crisis.
''He plays (the character) slightly backward, emotionally useless and really vulnerable,'' says Pearce. ''He's got this beautiful face so you are completely entranced by that face no matter how ugly he makes himself or how wounded he is, or how manky his haircut.''
LOVE IT!!!! Guy is totally ROBsessed ;)

This audio interview on CBC Radio was great. The interviewer started to grate on my nerves but David, of course, made sure Rob was respected. He loves him so. :')

I worked on a semi-transcript (not entirely verbatim) for CosmopolisFilm because the video can't be embedded on that blog but I'll include it here in case some of you aren't able to listen to the audio right now. The interview is on autorun so it's after the cut.

Robert Pattinson jokes about setting up a PayPal account just to work with David Cronenberg again

NOW Toronto got a chance to sit down with Rob and David during Cosmopolis promo in Canada. Of course there was insight and hilarity. :)
Robert Pattinson wasn’t expecting to star in Cosmopolis. In point of fact, he didn’t think a director like David Cronenberg would even consider him for the project.

“I never really took myself seriously as an actor before,” he says, barely awake the morning after the movie’s gala Toronto premiere. “And [then] you get cast in a movie like this, and it gets to Cannes and it’s not a total disaster, and I haven’t brought down David’s entire career…”

Cronenberg’s eyes crinkle. “We’ll see,” the director says. “That’s still in the future.” (Tink: These two need to go on the road...oh wait...)

On the verge of burning out after shooting the two-part Twilight finale, Breaking Dawn, Pattinson had been thinking seriously about pulling back from movies.

“I was fully intending on hiding for a couple of years,” Pattinson says. (Tink: *wide eyed* That's the scariest thing I've ever read.)

“I only wanted to do small parts. The time is gone – for me, especially – when you could learn on the job. I mean, even the idea of going to a repertory company or something – everybody’s going to be filming it on their phone, and it’s exactly the same thing in movies pretty much. So I wanted to try to do small parts in movies I thought I could learn something from. But then this came up.” (Tink: So basically we have David Cronenberg to thank for preventing a devastating, indefinite drought.)

“This” was the role of Eric Packer, a billionaire financial wizard who experiences a professional and personal collapse over one very long car ride across Manhattan in Cronenberg’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s allegorical novel. The way Cronenberg structured the movie – shooting in sequence, often sealing Pattinson and his co-stars into a limousine and directing them remotely – pushed Pattinson to a kind of creative epiphany.

“It takes away a lot of the problems of self-consciousness,” he says. “I did a movie where a lot of it was underwater” (that’d be Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, which put him on the map as doomed golden boy Cedric Diggory), “and it kind of felt a little bit like that. You feel like you have very little to prove when you’re in such a tiny space. There’s very little of the outside world coming in, so it’s pretty simple.”

Cronenberg so enjoyed putting Pattinson through Packer’s paces that he’s eager to repeat the experience, possibly with another member of his repertory company.

“You meet people that you work with and you feel you’d really like to work with them again,” he says. “I felt that way about Rob, and I felt that way, obviously, about Viggo [Mortensen]. And then I started to think, ‘Wow, Rob and Viggo in the same movie would be terrific,’ because I know they’d get along, but I also think creatively, onscreen, it’d be fantastic. But I don’t have a project, exactly; we have some possibilities. So we’re talking about it. It’s possible it’ll never happen, because it’s just so hard to get things made, really – especially anything interesting. That’s sort of where I am, making movies that are hard to get made.” (Tink: GAH. This really needs to happen. Fingers crossed!)

In all seriousness, though, the two do expect to collaborate on another picture.

“We feel that fate will bring us together again,” says Cronenberg.

“I’m setting up a PayPal account,” Pattinson laughs.

“Yes, that’s right,” Cronenberg says. “We’re crowdsourcing. Please, if you’ve got any money on you right now, just put it on the table.” (Tink: They're joking but they should do this. Can you imagine? Rob sets up a PayPal account and wow. Watch the fandom money flow in. I know I'd finance anything for Rob. I'll sell the farm and my kidney. Anything for Rob. *wink*)

"Robert Pattinson Has Become One Of My Favourite Actors” - David Cronenberg

Another NEW Interview with Robert Pattinson & David Cronenberg From the Toronto "Cosmopolis" Press Junket.
This one is from The Vancouver Sun is a great read and as per usual David only has good things to say about Rob.

Photobucket

TORONTO — Celebrated Canadian director David Cronenberg and Twilight star Robert Pattinson are hardly anti-establishment radicals.

But you would never know it from their film collaboration, Cosmopolis, which opens in theatres across Canada June 8.

Cosmopolis has already had its splashy premiere at the recent Cannes Film Festival, but the Toronto-based Cronenberg and the London-raised Pattinson are happy to be back in the city where they shot the film just last year.

Looking casual in slacks and shirts at a downtown Toronto hotel, the dapper filmmaker and handsome baseball cap-wearing leading man are making themselves available to promote the film, which exposes modern-day obsessions with greed and power.

But Cronenberg said that Cosmopolis is less an excuse for socio-political diatribes and more about an opportunity to present a fresh story. And yes, the 69-year-old understands that the film hits screens as anti-capitalist protests abound worldwide.

The movie, based on the 2003 Don DeLillo novel, tracks the bizarre day in the life of young Manhattan billionaire investor Eric Packer (Pattinson)
