Another ten films have now been invited to the Competition of the 68th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival. Three more have also been selected for the programme of the Berlinale Special.

David Zellner's 'Damsel,' starring Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska, and Christian Petzold's 'Transit,' featuring German stars Franz Rogowski and Paula Beer, are among films in the running for the Golden Bear.

The Berlin film festival on Monday announced eight more films to its competition lineup, adding mainly European art house titles to a program already leaning in that direction.

David Zellner's Damsel, which will have its world premiere in Sundance, is one of the few U.S. titles in the running for Berlin's Golden Bear. The period drama stars Robert Pattinson as a businessman who travels West to join his fiancee (Mia Wasikowska) in the mountains.

The competition lineup for the Berlin International Film Festival is taking shape with the organizers adding raft of new titles Monday including Robert Pattinson-starrer “Damsel.”

There are new competition entries for the 68th edition of the Berlin Film Festival hail from France, Germany, Ireland, the U.K. and across Europe, as well as from the U.S., Iran, and Paraguay.

Pattinson stars opposite Mia Wasikowska in period Western comedy “Damsel,” which is directed by David and Nathan Zellner. It will have its premiere at Sundance and its international premiere at Berlin.

MOVIE NEWS: Harmony Korine Confirms Robert Pattinson For 'The Trap' & Says Production Will Start In January 

Harmony Korine spoke to The Film Stage where he confirmed Robert Pattinson's involvement in The Trap along with the news that production would start in January!

Taking in over six times its budget at the worldwide box-office a few years ago, Spring Breakers, like most of Harmony Korine‘s films, was a love-it-or-hate-it experience, but regardless of how one felt, it certainly brought new attention to the director. For those interested about his career and thoughts on filmmaking, he recently sat down with Marc Maron for a 1.5-hour discussion.

In the conversation, Korine discussed the initial images that led to Spring Breakers, how he helped formulate James Franco‘s character, his current distaste for New York City (as well as his formative years there at NYU), and how Kids came about and Larry Clark discovering him. He also touched on his next feature The Trap, which we haven’t heard an update on since early this year. He confirmed the casting of Benicio Del Toro and Idris Elba (who are the two leads) as well as Robert Pattinson and Al Pacino, with production kicking off in January.

Set in the world of Miami music, it follows Del Toro’s character who gets locked up for a robbery involving Elba’s character and nearly 15 years later is back for revenge. Korine described it as “a complete sensory bombardment,” adding “the way I feel about storytelling now is that it’s more like liquid. It has to do more with energy.” He confirms there’s still a story to be told, saying it’s a “super propulsive, pretty highly violent revenge movie.”

MOVIE NEWS: Idris Elba joins Robert Pattinson and cast in Harmony Korine's "The Trap"

It's been awhile since we had news about this film. In fact, last time we reported on it, Jamie Foxx was attached and now he's being replaced.



The Hollywood Reporter:

Focus Features is in final talks to to prebuy U.S. rights to Harmony Korine's The Trap, a revenge tale set against the backdrop of the Miami music scene starring Idris Elba as a gangster rap artist and Benicio Del Toro as his best friend who took the fall for a robbery the duo committed years earlier. 

Elba is attached to replace Jamie Foxx, with Al Pacino, Robert Pattinson and James Franco also in final talks to join the cast (Del Toro was announced last year). 

Korine, who is repped by CAA, has been a hot commodity since the indie hit Spring Breakers, also starring Franco. Grisbi's John Lesher, producer of the Oscar-winning Birdman, is producing Korine's latest outing alongside Charles-Marie Anthonioz at Iconoclast and Marc Schmidheiny at DCM Film. 

Focus declined comment but sources say negotiations are at an advanced stage. CAA is arranging financing and representing domestic rights. 

In more good news for The Trap, Lionsgate is handling the movie internationally and will likely shop the project to foreign buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. 

In The Trap, written by Korine, Rico is at the top of his career and about to enjoy a triumphant night at the Grammy Awards when Slim (Del Toro) is released from prison after 14 years. Slim is determined to exact revenge after learning that Rico not only achieved fame and fortune but also married his girlfriend and raised Slim's son as his own. 

Slim's plot includes recruiting a crew of Uzi-wielding surfers led by Max (Pattinson), as well as enlisting the help of Rico's cocaine-happy manager (Franco). Pacino plays Slim's parole officer. 

Elba, who is represented by WME, is next in theaters with Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1). He also stars in African war drama Beasts of No Nation, which was recently acquired by Netflix and is slated to debut on the streaming service and in select theaters this fall timed to awards season. 

Pacino is repped by UTA and manager Rick Nicita. Pattinson is repped by WME and 3 Arts Entertainment; Franco by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

UPDATE: Collider says production is on track to begin this summer in Miami.

I love that Focus Features is also looking to pre-buy this title for the US. Distribution of Rob's indies is a contentious issue with me. And HOH! Al Pacino??? That's fantastic!

And we so know Rob will be ready for a surfing role. ;)

An update in the schedule for Idol's Eye. Yesterday we told you (in this post) that it was being reported that production would start Oct 30th through to Jan 5th.

Well now according to IASTE while the start of filming is still listed as Oct 30th the end date is extended to Jan 10th and there's a hiatus scheduled from Dec 21st- Jan 6th.

 David Cronenberg Talks About Casting Robert Pattinson + An Oscar-Qualifying Run For 'Maps To The Stars'

You've got to love David and his love for Rob. He spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at NYFF over the weekend and spoke about how he had no problem looking past Rob's Twilight past when casting him and Thank God for us he did.

"David Cronenberg's Hollywood-centered family melodrama Maps to the Stars marks the veteran director's second straight film with Twilight alum Robert Pattinson after 2012's Cosmopolis.

Although many still see Pattinson as vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen, Cronenberg told The Hollywood Reporter he can easily look past that.

"I have no problem ignoring that," the director said. "Of course I watched the first Twilight movie just to see what he was like and get a feel for his screen presence and so on and so on. … By the time you're on the set, it's just the two of you making movies. You forget your own movies too."

Speaking to THR ahead of Saturday night's New York Film Festival screening of Maps, Cronenberg explained that he wanted to work with Pattinson (who wasn't in attendance at the New York event) on this movie not only because the director thinks of him as "a wonderful actor" and they "had a good time on Cosmopolis," but also because it provided the opportunity for Pattinson to participate in the sort of ensemble film he'd told Cronenberg he wanted to do.

"He told me that he was scared about Cosmopolis because he had not really wanted to do a movie where he was the lead and had the whole movie on his shoulders," the director explained. "And of course in that movie he's in almost every scene. He said, 'One day I'd love to do an ensemble piece where there are a lot of good actors and [he's] just one of them.' "

When Cronenberg was putting together Maps, he thought of his Cosmopolis star."

ALSO some fantastic news about Maps To The Stars. While chatting to Vulture David revealed that Maps would be getting an Oscar-qualifying run.

" “They’re going to do a qualifying run — I think it’s in New York and L.A. — so that it will legitimately qualify for the Golden Globes and the Oscars,” said Cronenberg, who admitted, “There was a lot of discussion. You know, they really felt that they could do a better job releasing the film in 2015, in January or February. And then, of course, the discussion was, ‘Yeah, but wouldn’t it be great if Julianne got an Oscar nomination, since she won Best Actress at Cannes?’”

A strong recent showing at the Toronto Film Festival convinced Focus World to put the film out this year, though the distributor hasn’t committed to funding a costly Oscar campaign. “You know, I think the movie will find its way regardless,” said Maps screenwriter Bruce Wagner. “It already has.” "

CONFIRMED: Robert Pattinson's 'Maps To The Stars' Will Have Its North American Premiere At TIFF '14

Great news today. It was confirmed during the TIFF '14 Press Conference that Maps To The Stars will have it's North American Premiere at this years Toronto Film Festival. Not a major surprise but great to have it officially confirmed.

There are still many more films to be announced for the festival so we're still keeping our fingers firmly crossed that we may also see Life & Queen of the Desert there as well.
We'll keep you updated if there's anymore news on those.

This year's Toronto Film Festival runs from September 4-14.

The Rover had it's press screen in Cannes this morning and the media reviews and reactions have been coming out hot and heavy.
Here's a little round-up (updating all the time so keep checking back)...........

"Pearce is fiercely impressive here as a man who gave up on the human race even before the latest round of calamities, and if there are occasional glimpses of the kinder, gentler man he might once have been, we are more frequently privy to his savage survival instincts. But it’s Pattinson who turns out to be the film’s greatest surprise, sporting a convincing Southern accent and bringing an understated dignity to a role that might easily have been milked for cheap sentimental effects."

The Hollywood Reporter:

Pattinson delivers a performance that, despite the character’s own limitations, becomes more interesting as the film moves along, suggesting that the young actor might indeed be capable of offbeat character work. But always commanding attention at the film’s center is Pearce, who, under a taciturn demeanor, gives Eric all the cold-hearted remorselessness of a classic Western or film noir anti-hero who refuses to die before exacting vengeance for an unpardonable crime.

Little White Lies:

"Performances are pitched just right between hard-bitten and mournful. Guy Pierce, as all know, has stoically grizzled down to a fine art, while Pattinson manages his new non-heart-throb ground (the make-up team have wrought merry hell on his teeth) with admirable pathos. His limp, hick accent, facial tics and staccato delivery play second, third, fourth and fifth fiddle to a whole lot of heart, and one that Eric cannot help but fall for."

The Playlist:

"Pearce is reliably riveting as the totally stonefaced Man With No Name Except Maybe Eric, and Michod exploits his charisma for all its worth in the many extended takes of his inscrutable, unreadable mien, while Pattinson, who we were initially worried might be too tic-laden to fully convince, actually turns in a performance that manages to be more affecting than affected."

Popsugar:

"Pearce is the center of the film and a forceful presence as usual, but Pattinson puts in a formidable and truly transformative performance all his own. Rey is an unattractive character in an unattractive world, with rotten teeth, a bad haircut, and an off-putting, twitchy demeanor, but there's no sense that Pattinson did any of this in a superficial effort to ugly himself up and distance himself from his heartthrob image. If anything, the role should stand as proof to any doubters that with the right director and the freedom to break free of his own public persona, Pattinson has real ability and magnetism on screen."

The Evening Standard:

Guy Pearce is ferociously compelling and Robert Pattison surprisingly good too, putting his teen-roles behind him more conclusively than any of his contemporaries.

Could it have anything to do with all the Robert Pattinson films that have been featured on them?



Yeap it sure is! And this latest one The Film Stage's list of 80 Most Anticipated Films of 2014 features not one, not two but THREE of Rob's movies!




The Rover comes in at #14

After debuting the family crime drama Animal Kingdom back in 2010, it’s been a longer-than-expected wait for David Michôd‘s follow-up, but 2014 will finally bring it with The Rover. A likely bet for Cannes following its summer release, the existential western teams Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy and more, following a loner who tracks down the men responsible for stealing his car. If Michôd continues to display his knack for unbridled tension, this could prove to be one of Pattinson’s best performances.

Queen of the Desert makes it in at #7:

Following years of irritating stop-start development, Werner Herzog is finally shooting his first feature since 2009’s Bad Lieutenant and My Son, My Son. Shifts on the casting front are only natural with such long progressions acting as a factor, and now the central spot of legendary cartographer Gertrude Bell has been filled by Nicole Kidman – she buoyed by the likes of Robert Pattinson, James Franco, and Damian Lewis — and the subject’s staggering impact on history gives the sort of thread this writer-director has proven himself deeply invested in for decades. (Fitzcarraldo being but one obvious reference point.) It might prove a perfect fit, and we can’t wait to see how Queen shapes up to his true classics

AND Maps To The Stars leads the way at #4:

David Cronenberg is working in a different register these days — more removed (quite literally, in terms of something as essential as camera distance), more clinical, more alien — so those hoping for Scanners and not Cosmopolis might need to rearrange most expectations. The wicked sense of humor, however, is as cutting as ever, and in coming off a perfectly tuned, pitch-black social satire, his take on the corrosive nature of Hollywood — which required his first shooting endeavor in the United States — should be a sight; consider the lineup — Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams, as well as a returning Robert Pattinson & Sarah Gadon — and it’s hard to imagine many films will incite more of a visceral thrill this year.

Written by noted Los Angeles author Bruce Wagner ("Wild Palms"), David Cronenberg's latest apparently sets out to take a stab the celebrity-obsessed society of Los Angeles.

My interest here should be obvious, it's a Cronenberg film, need I say more?

I know you all remember 2012 when Cosmopolis took home the MTV Movie Brawl Award and you all know how much Rob loves prizes, right?

Robert Pattinson's Thriller 'Maps to the Stars' Starts Shooting & We Get A NEW Synopsis

If you're following things over on the "Maps To The Stars" Movie Blog (that Tink and myself are part of) you'll know that "Map To The Stars" started filming started last week and now we have a new synopsis



From The Wrap:

A contemporary tale exploring the demons of our celebrity-obsessed society, story follows the Weiss family, which is led by Stafford (Cusack), a psychotherapist and life coach who made his fortune with self-help books. His wife (Williams) is the overbearing mother-manager of their 13-year-old son (Bird), a TV star recently out of drug rehab. Their estranged daughter (Wasikowska) has just been released from a psychiatric hospital and befriended a limo driver (Pattinson) who is also an aspiring actor.

One of Stafford’s celebrity clients is Havana (Moore), an actress with an unusual new assistant. Havana’s dream of reprising her dead mother’s (Gadon) starring role from the 1960s slowly crumbles while ghosts, death and all manner of vices collide.

Screen Daily  reported on official word of principal photography beginning:

eOne and Prospero Pictures executives reported on Monday [15] that principal photography has begun on David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars.

The shoot in Toronto and Los Angeles is expected to last 30 days. eOne will distribute directly in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia and New Zealand, while eOne Films International handles all remaining international rights.

You’ll recall that his social satire / ghost picture, Maps to the Stars, was in casting stages for a few months prior, our most recent report adding the talents of Mia Wasikowska and Olivia Williams to an already stacked lineup — Robert Pattinson (the director’s Cosmopolis star), Sarah Gadon (also of the 2012 picture), John Cusack, and Julianne Moore all being tapped to lead. Everything’s been coming up Milhouse.

With cameras officially rolling — and this endeavor, at some point, seeing Cronenberg make a directing debut in the United States — some fresh, worthwhile information has begun to file in. Of an appreciably spoiler-free manner is the following plot synopsis, which, in widely expanding the scope on Bruce Wagner‘s screenplay, alters a few personal expectations

Here’s hoping Maps to the Stars is only part two of a Cronenberg-Pattinson “limo trilogy.” Prospero Pictures and SBS Productions have backed the title, for which eOne — yet another Cosmopolis holdover — are to provide domestic distribution. Expect the cast and crew to show off their work in 2014, most likely premiering the title at Cannes.
