Anton Corbijn talks about the parallel universe of Robert Pattinson playing Dennis Stock in LIFE

Anton Corbijn talks about the parallel universe of Robert Pattinson playing Dennis Stock in LIFE

Anton talked about Rob ahead of the films release in Ireland Sept. 25th. I share his feelings about Rob not playing Dean and have been amused by publications that are quick to assume Rob plays the icon when the film was in production last year.

Excerpt from Scannian (Ireland): “I had Robert on board first,” says Corbijn. “I never saw him as Dean. Most people assume, when they hear he’s in this film, that he’ll play James Dean, because you equate a big name with a big name.

“But I love Rob playing the part of Dennis Stock because, as you know, he’s very famous through the Twilight series, which came when he was young, and it came relatively easy, I guess, to him. Now he wants to prove to himself that he’s worthy of being an actor, so he takes all these left-of-centre roles – with directors like (David) Cronenberg and Werner Herzog.

“So he is a guy who wants to prove himself as an actor playing a photographer who wants to prove himself as a photographer. I thought it was a nice parallel universe, and also to turn the camera on him.

“He’s always being chased by photographers and now he plays a photographer himself. There’s a kid of perverse pleasure there.

Robert Kestler: Benzini Bros. Circus Core Roustabout shared his story with WFE Blog, here's a little bit where he talks about Rob (and calls him a future Oscar Winner), to read the rest head over to the WFE Blog

The cast, namely Robert, Reese and Christoph were truly amazing. Each one truly genuine and kind. Working with two Oscar winners and a future Oscar winner was amazing. Robert Pattinson will show the world with this movie his versatility and depth as an actor. The fight scenes between Robert and Christoph were true genius. Both on the part of the actors and the fact they did the fights themselves. Reese is a wonderful and genuine person. I was privileged to speak with her on set. You will not find a more skilled and polished actress anywhere. Christoph is a true professional. His focus on his character and making it real is second to none. As one of the Core Benzini Roustabouts I was on set quite a bit. We “rousties” actually became like family.

And Cody Wood who also played a roustabout has been putting his story up in parts.
Part 1 is Here and Part 2 here.

Here are some snippets where he talks about Rob

On my walk back across the circus floor I noticed a new excitement. There was no audible noise but something seemed different. When I came around the last large tent pole Pattinson had appeared at the end of the menagerie. I heard the start of the AD’s instructions. “Rob, we’re going to have you….” The young actor looked controlled and confident even while hundreds of Rubes tried to secretly glance in his direction. Most of the cast had arrived at their original mark but I was still walking. Fortuitously I was placed near the entrance to the tent just a few feet from where Rob was now standing.

While the cinematographer gathered lighting calculations I was instructed to wait for Rob to hit his second mark and run past him going out the menagerie. Again, the speed at which the cues came was surprising. The AD instructed, “Pictures Up, and Background”. On “background” the crowd began the stampede away from the menagerie. A third cue came for Rob and on “action” he became Jacob Jankowski. He took a slow step toward the running crowd and looked on with awe. He took another step and scanned the crowd left to right. From behind the camera I sprinted as fast as I could just past Jacob. The crowd was still screaming and running in the other direction. I hopped to my right to avoid a tent pole and stopped dead. My breath was gone and my eyes were frozen. A few feet in front of me stood an enormous buffalo. Dark thick fur covered the entire animal except for the large blood-shot eyes that looked directly at me. I methodically moved each foot backward while the stampede continued on in the tent. Finally the word “Cut” came bellowing out from the tent and gladly moved back to safety.

Rob was smiling at the director. He was obviously tickled by the intensity and size of the stampede. The entire experience was authentic. There were peanuts scattered on the ground and popcorn boxes tipped in the bleachers. Along the menagerie a host of animals did their part to make the scene possible and center ring the massive elephant stood like royalty. There was so much to take in that the twelve hour day passed like minutes.
