ROBsessed Quickie: Screenwriter, Luke Davies, talks about Robert Pattinson channeling discomfort in 'LIFE'

ROBsessed Quickie: Screenwriter, Luke Davies, talks about Robert Pattinson channeling discomfort in 'LIFE'

I liked this interview Luke Davies did with The Guardian ('Luke Davies on 'mischievous' James Dean and the myth of a broody youth'). He mentions Rob but also shares his reasons for penning LIFE and that "Dennis Stock was the powerful figure who had something to offer to James Dean, who was conflicted about what it was that was being offered: a doorway into the fame machine."

I am still bitterly waiting for Dec. 4th along with many of you so these interviews are torturous and a pleasure. The excerpt that mentions Rob specifically was interesting because we've only heard or read Rob mention Dennis' personality or the chip on his shoulder. Davies expands on those issues with The Guardian:
Stock’s personality was easier to uncover. Davies says his ex-wives described the photographer as “a classic old school misogynist”. While the film has depicted him in a more flattering light, Pattinson retains a certain hard-done-by attitude. “It was great casting him as the angular Dennis character, always a little bit on edge, by not feeling that he was getting recognised in the right way.
“I’m sure that’s not Rob Pattinson’s experience, [of] not getting recognised, but there is a discomfort, which he got to channel.”

Stock had mixed feelings about the Life photographs, says Davies. “He went through his life with a real chip on his shoulder that the thing that paid his rent for the next 40 years was that moment in time, not all the other stuff he did. I think it was both a curse and a blessing.”

The Film Stage talked to director, Olivier Assayas, at the New York Film Festival and he revealed that Idol's Eye is good to go the week of Oct. 20th.

We can't wait for WorkingRob to come back! He's had a break since finishing Life in March and then PromoRob got busy with The Rover and Maps To The Stars. Rob is really excited about the "very very coolIdol's Eye and so are we!

Box Office Mojo also reported the annoying news that Maps To The Stars won't be for US eyes until February 27th.
 photo ScreenShot2014-10-08at45635PM.png

I mused about this over on our film site for MTTS. Click HERE if you want to muse too but the long story short is I think MTTS is getting the shaft in the US because of the subject matter.

POLLS: Robert Pattinson's Maps To The Stars US distribution handled by Focus World; Expected in 2015

POLLS: Robert Pattinson's Maps To The Stars US distribution handled by Focus World; Expected in 2015

Well I'm disgruntled. Maps To The Stars had a distribution swap from eOne to Focus World and it feels like US Rob fans and Julianne Moore got the shaft.

 photo tumblr_nb2vdmmwef1s0aqxio1_250.gif

From Variety:
After winning the best actress award in Cannes for “Maps to the Stars,” Julianne Moore was considered a strong bet in this year’s Oscar race for her turn as a washed-up star in the David Cronenberg drama. But the overdue actress, who has been nominated for four Academy Awards without winning, could be sitting out of awards season.

In a deal that closed last week, Focus World picked up U.S. distribution rights to the Cronenberg drama from Canadian outfit Entertainment One (eOne), sources tell Variety exclusively. “Maps to the Stars” won’t premiere stateside until early 2015.

Focus World is the alternative distribution division of Focus Features, and it hasn’t been decided if the drama will be released on VOD, play in theaters domestically or some combination thereof. “Maps” could get an Oscar qualifying theatrical release at the end of 2014, so that it would at least be eligible for Academy Awards nominations, according to one individual with knowledge of the deal, but a movie with that kind of strategy can sometimes get lost in the slew of December contenders.

“Maps to the Stars” will screen this fall at the Toronto International and New York Film Festivals, which are traditionally launching pads for Oscar contenders. On Sept. 9, Moore is scheduled to appear at a cocktail event following a screening of the film at Toronto.

“Maps to the Stars” premiered at Cannes to mixed reviews, although Moore was singled out by critics as delivering one of the best performances of her career. The film is a dark deconstruction of celebrity culture and co-stars Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams, John Cusack and Robert Pattinson, who previously worked with Cronenberg on “Cosmopolis.” Bruce Wagner (“Wild Palms”) wrote the screenplay.

Co-financed by eOne and Prospero Pictures, “Maps to the Stars” was produced by Prospero’s Martin Katz, SBS Productions’ Saïd Ben Saïd and Michel Merkt. Sentient Entertainment’s Renee Tab and eOne’s Benedict Carver executive-produced the film.

EOne Films International handles worldwide rights to “Maps to the Stars,” and will directly distribute the film in Canada, the U.K., and Australia and New Zealand. The movie opens in Canada on Oct. 31, and will rollout to other regions of the world starting this year.

WME negotiated on behalf of eOne with Anjay Nagpal, SVP, and Gene Kang, VP of Business Affairs, representing Focus World.
Indiewire/Thompson On Hollywood also said this is bye bye to award season (excerpt):
Julianne Moore can kiss goodbye to any hopes she was nursing for an Oscar campaign for David Cronenberg's Cannes Best Actress winner "Maps to the Stars," which is set to play Toronto and New York festivals. Canadian distributor eOne was going to distribute the film stateside, but it has now sold U.S. rights not to Universal specialty distributor Focus Features--the arm that would handle an Oscar effort--but Focus World, their digital distribution arm, which plans an early 2015 release.

The entertaining satire of Hollywood boasts a strong cast including Cronenberg fave Rob Pattinson, who canoodles on screen with both an anxiety-ridden movie star (Moore) and the troubled daughter (Mia Wasikowska) of psychotherapist/coach to the stars (John Cusack) and his wife (Olivia Williams), who manages his son's career. Ordinarily you would expect this to have a strong theatrical release, but this kind of movie does well on VOD, with smaller marketing costs.
That's disappointing to say the least. I had hoped Julianne would get a push and we might ride that wave to OscarRob strutting his stuff in support. Oh well....
Onward and upward! Do you guys think we'll have some CannesRob4.0 next year? Where will Life and Queen of the Desert pop up?? Will Idol's Eye go for a run next fall??? How about we do some polling to see what we're all thinking.

COSMOPOLIS SPOILER POST + Review from the Toronto Premiere Viewing

COSMOPOLIS SPOILER POST + Review from the Toronto Premiere Viewing

It's Cosmopolis Day in Canada! This is your spoiler thread so we invite you to share your uncensored thoughts  all weekend in here.  Below are links to our previous review/spoiler threads and my review of Cosmopolis. I kept the more spoiler-y bits under the cut for those avoiding.

Photobucket
I've been blogging about Cosmopolis for a year and a half so when it was announced that Canada would release the film on June 8th, there was no question in my mind that I would be traveling to the Great White North to view the film. I knew I was going to enjoy it going in because I enjoyed the story and dialogue from the book/script. Cosmopolis promo has been all about emphasizing the dialogue so I felt ready.

I was not ready for the visual and auditory experience of Cosmopolis. It was exactly what David Cronenberg said: "fantastic faces saying fantastic words". My initial reaction to the film was I felt like my brain just had sex. The words kept running through my mind post-viewing and the interactions Rob's Eric Packer had with each character was impossible to forget.

Photobucket

Rob's performance was brilliant. It truly was. I only saw Eric Packer on the screen and I was mesmerized by his words, mind and actions. Rob shined in this role. It was "thick and chewy" and he owned it. I liken his performance to running a 4x4 race. Starting with a steady pace but half way through, letting your skill expand and in the last leg, letting it explode. The effect leaving you breathless. I felt breathless when the credits started to roll. This approach felt right for Eric too. His day, starting with a simple request/demand - a haircut - but then escalating into unfathomable complexities. Climaxing into an unknown but hopeful future.

Cosmopolis Review: The film is hot! 4 out of 5 points and hat's off to Robert Pattinson's performance!

Cosmopolis Review: The film is hot! 4 out of 5 points and hat's off to Robert Pattinson's performance!

Clemenceau reviewed Cosmopolis for his Weekly Web Magazine. It's in french but here's the translation
Last movie I saw this week, Cosmopolis by David Cronenberg.
The story: It's one day in the life of Eric Packer, golden boy in need of a haircut when things go off the deep end.
I loved it! Hats off to Robert Pattinson's performance, who's really good. And I wasn't a big fan before.
It has everything we like: money, sex, death, desire, power, war and goat cheese.
The film is hot and the dialogues are completely crazy. The dialogues are from Don DeLillo's novel, seeing as the movie is an adaptation of his book.
Last thing is Mathieu Amalric's acting (I'm a big fan) and Juliette Binoche who are in the movie and simply amazing.
I gave it 4 out of 5 points. It's a really great movie that I warmly recommend.
From his comment, I love goat cheese, sex, desire and money...not in that order. But I also know I'll LOVE Cosmopolis. :) Review starts at 2:27

Video On Demand Viewing Info for Robert Pattinson's Bel Ami US Release (May 4th)

Video On Demand Viewing Info for Robert Pattinson's Bel Ami US Release (May 4th)

We are here, USA! DuRob in your bedroom at midnight! Or family room. Whatever. Wherever. Where you watch Bel Ami is your private business. ;)

Some misinformation was spread yesterday about viewing options for Bel Ami. I was hyper-sensitive about it because the info claimed I'd get to see Bel Ami through my cable company on May 4th and being a customer of AT&T, I know they won't provide the VOD until June 8th (theatrical release).

Lucky for us, if you've been following Torture Tuesday for the past 6 weeks, you know what's up.

Here's the screencap from Magnolia Pictures official site, letting you know your viewing options.

Photobucket

As you know, I'm going to get the iTunes first so I can see it at midnight and then I'll transition to Amazon over the weekend after my iTunes rental is up. I love that Amazon skips the long download process. How are you guys viewing it? I know you have a plan by now. ;)

Click HERE if you'd like to visit the official site.

Look out for the spoiler post in a few hours. Many of you have seen it already but you can join in the squeees and praise for Rob's work at Georges Duroy. The film also opened in theaters in Germany and Austria :)

A trailer specifically for VOD was released as well. There are slightly extended shots in the trailer we haven't seen before but nothing major.

Enjoy Bel Ami all weekend and all month!

Torture Tuesday starring Robert Pattinson: BEL AMI WEEK!!!

Torture Tuesday starring Robert Pattinson: BEL AMI WEEK!!!

IT'S TIME!!!!!! IT'S TIIIIIIIIIIIMMMMEEEE!!!!!!

Photobucket

I'm bursting out of my skin. I'm a sizzling live wire. I'm a bundle of cosmic fire. Can you tell I'm READY for Bel Ami???

Australian distributor, Hopscotch Films, released this cool, behind-the-scenes look at Bel Ami but before we get to that, let's talk business: how will you be viewing Bel Ami on May 4th?

Amazon Instant Video viewers:
Magnolia Pictures released a VOD film (Apartment 143) on April 27th. I checked Amazon on April 27th at midnight ET and the film was not up. It was not available for instant viewing right away. It took several hours. The film was also never in the 'coming soon' list, it just appeared. I know this worried several people since Bel Ami has not appeared on the 'coming soon' list. My test showed the films do not update right at midnight but it's still worth checking if you plan to watch Bel Ami at 9pm PST like I am. ;) If you are going to be more rational, the film will be ready for you to watch instantly at a normal hour on May 4th.

iTunes viewers:
The film will update May 4th at midnight. Only bummer is the download time. It'll take me 1.5 hours to download but those times change depending on your internet speed. Since I'm on the west coast, this isn't bad for me but I know it's a tough one for east coasters.

Cable viewers:
You need to check this chart to see if your cable company is on here. If it is, there's a good chance you can view Bel Ami immediately at midnight on May 4th. Read carefully because some companies (like mine, AT&T Uverse) only let you see VOD on the theatrical release date (June 8th).

Photobucket

At midnight on May 4th, I'll put up a spoiler post but really I think it'll be a "Let's go ape sh*t about how amazing DuRob was" post. Show your support for Rob's long awaited film and check it out all weekend. I already know I'm going to be breaking the bank for the month of May with those $9.99 rentals. Rob's worth every penny.

Now about that behind-the-scenes footage. I'm hoping we see more of these in the Bel Ami DVD extras because I'm forever fascinated by filmmaking. I also get a kick out of seeing Rob "come back" after being in character. You can always tell when he's with us again. :)

MORE Bel Ami behind-the scenes footage after the cut!

Torture Tuesday with Robert Pattinson: 1 MORE WEEK!!!!!!

Torture Tuesday with Robert Pattinson: 1 MORE WEEK!!!!!!

GAH!!!! 1 MORE WEEK!!!!

Bel Ami is around the corner! Have you made your plans? You know we want you READY.

First: The list of viewing options for May 4th. I'm checking the release time for a film going on VOD this week so I'll let you guys know if May 4th at midnight (May 3rd 9pm PST) is an option.

Photobucket

Next: A quick update about theaters for June 8th. Check you out, Ohio!

Photobucket

Lastly: A respectable review from Times Literary Review. I've been quite bothered with Magnolia Pictures twitter campaign for the film in the States. It's a shame the film isn't being promoted in a fashion that isn't so teeny-bopper but I can't act like I don't understand that approach either. C'est la vie. I believe Cosmopolis will have better promo stateside.

Here's the excerpt of the Rob mention but click the thumbnail to read the whole interview. Thank you Jean for emailing it to us :)
The film looks sumptuous and the Anglo-American cast is distinguished...The heart-throb Robert Pattinson as Duroy is more likeable and guileless than the Third Republic parvenu of the book. Maupassant said of him "he has no talent. He gets ahead by using women", and this aspect of Duroy's character is well brought out by Pattinson.

We are so ready for you, DuRob.
