Movie updates for Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson is continuing his flirtation with French Film Directors.  There were two updates this week with new movie news for Rob and both are with French filmmakers.   Add this to his role in the upcoming Claire Denis led High Life filming next year and we see a French connection!

From The Playlist
"You may not know the name Houda Benyamina, but you’re probably going to hear much more about her. The filmmaker made waves with her feature debut “Divines,” which won the Camera d’Or at Cannes, and was snapped up by none other than Netflix. The movie is now streaming on the service, and Hollywood has taken note, with the director landing an American agent, and it has allowed her to meet with some name brand actors about her next movie.

According to Les InRocks, James Franco and Robert Pattinson are among the actors that Benyamina has discussed her next project with. The untitled film is apparently a love story and costume drama set against the backdrop of war, but there’s no further details at the moment. It all seems pretty early on, and casting still down the line, but it speaks to the heat Benyamina has generated that she’s nabbing this kind of attention from Hollywood types."

An update on Idol's Eye

Oliver Assayas was in Argentina to attend the Festival of Mar Del Plata and was interviewed by La Nacion (The Nation).
"about to realize a long – delayed and costly project as Idol’s Eye (the story of a petty thief who steals a sapphire belonging to the Mafia boss of Chicago), which will feature Robert Pattinson, Rachel Weisz and Sylvester Stallone (replaces last time Robert De Niro).
It is assumed that the film will be next March, the actors are confirmed, but it was an enormous debt of that frustrated filming for which was all ready, so the budget went to the clouds, because more than I think the $ 25 million. In addition, because that cost and that mishap, we cannot film in Canada, so we must find new locations. I will only do it if, as it seems now, it will have basically French control. It no longer interests me to work in the current conditions of Hollywood with producer despots and delirious. The only good thing of this experience is to be able to shoot Stallone, Pattinson or Weisz. The best of Hollywood, no doubt, are its actors."

MOVIE NEWS: Sylvester Stallone Joins Robert Pattinson In Olivier Assayas’ ‘Idol’s Eye’

MOVIE NEWS: Sylvester Stallone Joins Robert Pattinson In Olivier Assayas’ ‘Idol’s Eye’

Great news, Idols Eye is back on with Sylvester Stallone taking on the role of Tony Accardo (originally being played by Robert DeNiro). Shooting is scheduled for February 2017 in Toronto.

More from The Film Stage below

Sylvester Stallone, the Rocky and Rambo actor, has joined Idol’s Eye, a crime drama that had been called off a few years ago, just moments before shooting was set to begin. Thankfully, it’s now back on and, for those that were looking forward to the original ensemble, the majority has also remained intact.

While Stallone will be taking the role previously meant for Robert De Niro (of Chicago mob boss Tony Accardo), Robert Pattinson and Rachel Weisz are still aboard, according to ScreenDaily. Budgeted at around $25 million, the film follows Pattinson’s character as a “petty thief who unknowingly steals a blue diamond from Accardo and sparks a war between the two men as they strive to stay ahead of the FBI.”

Shooting will still take place in Toronto, now aiming for a February start date, which means we could see this as early as next fall. Meanwhile, in other Stallone news, he was recently attached to a sequel to his 2013 prison drama Escape Plan.

UPDATE:
From Gossip Cop:

Idol’s Eye, starring Robert Pattinson and Robert De Niro, has been canceled, Gossip Cop exclusively confirms.

Here’s an exclusive statement from producers to Gossip Cop: “Due to the criteria for financing not being met by producers, Benaroya Pictures has formally decided to discontinue financing the motion picture titled IDOL’S EYE. The company cannot continue to put its investment at risk and has been forced to stop cash flowing the production.”

It continues, “This is something all of us wanted to avoid, but due to the producers missing a number of financing criteria deadlines that were mutually established by all parties, we were left with no other options. Benaroya Pictures plans to retain the rights of the film and move forward with production on the picture after we generate a revised script and assemble a new filmmaking team.”

There haven't been any official announcements but Shane Daly who is in the cast of Idol's Eye playing Officer Jones tweeted this today......

The Chicago Tribune also reported that the film might not shoot in Chicago but we'll have to wait and see:
A spokesperson for the Toronto Film, Television and Digital Media Office said last month that the mob movie is scheduled to shoot in Toronto Oct. 22-Dec. 22. Asked if there are still plans to shoot in Chicago, Chicago Film Office director Rich Moskal said by email Tuesday "Last I heard, 'Idol's Eye' was to be filmed in Toronto. Maybe some 2nd unit filming later this year, but not confirmed."
We'll keep you posted!

PromoRob is relaxing at the moment so how great is it that a hidden gem of an interview popped up!

Thanks to our reader, Cali, this interview from CannesRob emerged and after a quick check on the blog, we hadn't posted it!

 photo crying.gif

Don't cry, dry your eyes. We're posting it now and it's classic Rob which means it's awesome. It's all perfect timing to read something new for The Rover, Maps to the Stars and more since:
  1. The Rover is out on US Bluray/DVD this Tuesday
  2. Maps To The Stars in out in UK theaters this Friday
  3. Idol's Eye starts filming in October
  4. We love Rob and soak up all his interviews whenever they hit us

photo RobCannes.jpgYahoo Singapore: It’s late afternoon in Cannes, and heartthrob, Robert Pattinson, 28, appears to be having a good time at the world’s most glamorous film festival promoting the Rover, starring alongside Guy Pearce, 46. He will also star opposite Julianne Moore, 53, in Maps to the Stars, both slated for release this summer.

His hair is short, he has a little facial stubble and he’s wearing a turquoise jacket, black shirt and dark jeans and sneakers.

Pattinson is of course best known for his role as Edward, a vampire who falls in love with a human, Bella, played by on again off again girlfriend, Kristen Stewart, 24, in The Twilight Saga.

Since then, Pattinson has taken on more serious roles such as Remember Me (2010) and Water for Elephants (2011) in which he starred alongside Reese Witherspoon.

Famous for his good looks, Pattinson is often seen topping the ‘hottest’ lists in many publications such as People (2008 and 2009) and Glamour UK, yet he remains humble. He is also the face of Dior Homme, which he took on after Jude Law.

THE INTERVIEW:

Q: Are you a fan of the Mad Max films?

PATTINSON: I have actually never seen them. I have been asked so many times this morning and I have never seen it. (laughter) I guess I have got to see it now.

Q: This whole genre, is it familiar to you?

PATTINSON: Yeah, but I think this one is kind of different. I mean, it’s not like everyone has gone crazy, and they are cannibals. There feels something more real about it, and also I think the world where the movie is set, it’s not that the entire world is like that, they are just in the middle of nowhere. The country has just become very unstable and anything could collapse at any second. It’s sort of like the new society is trying to be born again.

Q: Is the collapse of society a familiar fear to you that you can relate to?

PATTINSON: Not really. I think the world is quite resilient, but I don’t know I think it would be a bit of fun. But I am a bit of a nihilist. (laughter)

Q: Was it fun on the set with Guy Pearce? Was he intimidating?

PATTINSON: No, and he’s also really strong as well. So when you are being thrown around, it actually hurts quite a lot. (laughter) And he was really in it the whole time because he’s really not like that.

Q: So he’s a good actor like you. Is this something that’s really important to you when you work?

PATTINSON: Yeah, one hundred percent. I mean, I think, I always hear some actors saying they didn’t read reviews or care about it, and I just think they are making it up. (laughs) Everybody cares about it; whether people think it’s good.

Q: What was the most difficult thing for you to create this character, to make him special in a way?

PATTINSON: I mean a lot of it was just there in the script at the beginning and I just really connected to it. I mean the most difficult thing was getting the job. But I think once I was doing it, it was quite fun. It was an exciting part to play and David Michôd kind of let me sort of run with any idea as well.

Q: And the accent thing, was that your idea?

PATTINSON: He was supposed to be from the South, but literally only said he was from somewhere in the South, so I don’t know, that was the kind of voice I heard in my head when I was reading the script.

Q: And you said it was more difficult to get the job.

PATTINSON: I mean, I just hate auditioning and I am really, really bad at it. I get so nervous and mess it up for myself and so I have basically tried to avoid doing auditions at all costs. I read the script and I was like, I really, really, really have got to get this part. It’s weird though, preparing for a part that you are already cast and just actually doing it for real and just kind of hoping that your anxiety doesn’t get the better of you in the room.

Q: And you got a phone call? What happened?

PATTINSON: I got a second audition afterwards and then they told me at the end of it, and it was a kind of amazing feeling.

Q: And so was it the first time you went to Australia shooting?

PATTINSON: I have been to Sydney just a couple of times to work, but yeah, in that area definitely.

Q: Are you done with the blockbuster thing or are you possibly returning to that at some point in your career?

PATTINSON: Yeah, it’s waiting for the right director. Nothing has come up and I mean, that’s not saying I don’t want to do it, but blockbusters, big movies just take a really long time to shoot as well. So I think you have to really, really, really want to do it. There’s a lot of pressure and you just don’t get that many interesting parts in big movies, especially for young guys. It’s just the same thing every time.

Q: Lots of comic book adaptations. Is there some character that you would say, yeah, I would do it?

PATTINSON: Yeah maybe, I was never really that into comic books when I was a kid and stuff so I don’t really have that connection. You also have to work out like tons, (laughter) in potentially a movie you might not like. It’s just a big hassle. (laughs)

Q: Maps to the Stars was excellent. So when you first read the script, what did you make of it?

PATTINSON: I thought it was hilarious and I liked some of the lines (laughter) I am excited about seeing it with an audience. But that’s Cronenberg; he’s quite into being subversive and quite combative and stuff. It’s kind of amazing that he’s still doing that, he’s 72.

Q: Have you seen people who actually almost act like that?

PATTINSON: A lot of the young kids in it, I have seen a lot of them. I think they are the most honest. And Havana, there are lots of actresses who kind of go a little bit crazy. But the kids, that’s like quite a mainstream thing, this kind of hatred. There’s a lot of negative energy, I don’t know why, it’s just really odd.

Q: You played music on Twilight – will you release a record one day?

PATTINSON: I want to make one, I just don’t really know about releasing one. (laughs) I don’t know, I can’t really deal with criticism very well and I have already got criticism coming from one angle (laughs) and I don’t feel the need to get it from somewhere else.

Q: What would it sound like? What music would you make?

PATTINSON: I don’t know yet. I mean I always used to record kind of singer-songwriters stuff and I don’t really want to do that. I was trying to figure out something else, but yeah, I don’t know yet. Trying to figure out my new sound. (Tink: Rob will be old and gray still telling us he's working on recording an album and he's trying to figure it out. OLD AND GRAY.)

Global News reports about Rob's return to Toronto to film the Olivier Assayas' film:
TORONTO — Two of the world’s most famous Roberts — Pattinson and DeNiro — will be in Toronto next month. The actors are scheduled to co-star in Idol’s Eye, which is shooting in the city from Oct. 22 to mid-December. Additional scenes will be filmed in Chicago.
The action-thriller, directed by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas, is about thieves who encounter problems when they try to rob a pawn shop. DeNiro, 71, and Pattinson, 28, are joined in the cast by Rachel Weisz.
Idol’s Eye will be the fourth film Pattinson has made in Toronto. The Twilight star wrapped the biopic Life earlier this year and also made 2014’s Maps to the Stars and 2012’s Cosmopolis in the city.

Robert Pattinson talks about his Idol's Eye character, doing theater and MORE with The Guardian

Robert Pattinson talks about his Idol's Eye character, doing theater and MORE with The Guardian

Great interview with Rob for The Guardian during is UK promo for The Rover!

 photo Robert-Pattinson-portrait-010.jpg

The Guardian: Robert Pattinson: ‘The Rover felt like a dream'
He made his name as teenage vampire heart-throb Edward Cullen. Then his turbulent romance with co‑star Kristen Stewart dominated the world’s gossip columns. Now Robert Pattinson is older, wiser and shedding his Hollywood pretty-boy image. He talks about his new role in David Michôd’s dystopian outback western The Rover

There is a moment in The Rover, David Michôd’s futuristic western set in the Australian outback, in which Robert Pattinson’s character sits in the cab of a truck at night listening to the radio play Keri Hilson’s hit Pretty Girl Rock. The night is black and the radio tinny, and softly Pattinson begins to sing along. “Don’t hate me ’cause I’m beautiful,” he sings, his voice high and whiny, the lyrics muffled by lips that cling to dirty teeth. “Don’t hate me ‘cause I’m beautiful.”

It’s a pivotal moment for Rey, the slow, needy, uncertain young man Pattinson plays, but it also feels like something of a reference point in the career of the actor himself; a small reminder for the audience of just how far he has run from his days as the pretty-boy Hollywood pin-up.

The Pattinson who walks into our interview this morning seems to play a similar trick, pointing out, two steps into the room, that the hotel carpet “looks like a Magic Eye picture”. And indeed it does – a bold, blurry pattern in stripes of cream and black. But Pattinson’s remark also serves to shifts attention neatly away from himself, as if he is weary of being the centre of it, the face that everyone stares at.

Pattinson was 22 when he was first cast as Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga, the five-part movie adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s best-selling teen vampire novels. Overnight he became one of Hollywood’s most adored young stars, pursued wherever he went by paparazzi and screaming fans. He was named “the most handsome man in the world” by Vanity Fair, and one of the 100 Most Influential People by Time. Amid all the fuss and the madness he embarked upon a tortuous relationship with his co-star, Kristen Stewart, that meant the young couple were rarely out of the gossip pages.

He is 28 now. The final Twilight instalment done, the Stewart romance finished, he is finally cutting a dash as a serious actor.

Early leading-man roles (Remember Me; Water for Elephants) have given way to more challenging characters – he earned impressive reviews for his portrayal of a young billionaire in David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis, and will soon be seen in another Cronenberg project, Maps to the Stars – as well as starring alongside Nicole Kidman in the Gertrude Bell biopic Queen of the Desert.

But for now he is rooted in Michôd’s The Rover, a brilliantly dark story of a loner (Guy Pearce) in pursuit of a gang of ramshackle crooks who have stolen his car. En route, he acquires Rey (Pattinson), the brother of one of the thieves, whom they had left for dead at the scene of a botched robbery, and together they chug through the Australian desert, now a glowering, lawless land 10 years after a global economic collapse.

“I just thought it was strikingly original,” Pattinson says of first reading Michôd’s script. “Even in the way it looked on the page.

“David’s got a very specific way of writing dialogue. It’s very functional, the writing’s very harsh, it’s savage, but it didn’t feel just stylised writing – it was emotional as well. It just seemed so natural compared to something like No Country for Old Men. I always felt that was more like film writing. And this didn’t really feel like a film script – it felt like a dream.”

Pattinson has a very particular way of speaking: he will talk softly, intently about subjects you sense mean a great deal to him – Michôd’s writing, for instance, or the craft of acting – only to then sweep it to one side with a flourishing “It was crazy!” or a burst of wheezy, slightly wild laughter. It gives the impression of someone who has not quite yet settled into his skin.

He had to audition for The Rover – a process he loathes. “I’m quite good at doing meetings,” he says. “If I’m just meeting someone about a job I’m like a dog, especially if my agent’s said to me: ‘A lot of people want this job.’ Then I’m like: ‘Oh yeah? Then I will do anything to get it!’” What’s his technique? “I don’t know, I just become a bullshit artist!” he laughs. “That’s when I start acting! I’m really much better at doing it when the cameras aren’t rolling …”

But auditions petrify him. He has spoken of the good 45 minutes of “neuroses” he has to suffer before any audition can ever really begin. “I just can’t … I literally can’t do it,” he tries to explain. “It’s just me looking uncomfortable, trying to put on an American accent … or sitting in the corner, making myself throw up and punching myself in the face.” What helps get him past the neuroses, what happens after those excruciating 45 minutes that helps him perform. “Just that you think that someone actually believes you can do something,” he says. “That makes me sound like such an idiot. It’s crazy.”

But the joys of acting still outweigh these moments.

(From express.de)

express.de, translation using Google and Reverso:
Why did you sell your mansion in Los Angeles?

She was much too big for me. I'm not old enough to toil with homeowner's things like broken water pipes.

Where do you live now?

I was homeless for six months after the sale. I borrowed houses from people when they were not in the city. Now I've found a home in the Hollywood Hills that I rent. It is not too large. I barely have furniture. Some of them are from the previous tenant. The only thing I brought with me, are air mattresses. In which I sleep. (Tink: With me. Shhhhhhh)

You have earned millions and can afford expensive equipment.

I'm not materialistic. The only thing I treat myself, are old guitars. I have 17 in my collection. My showpiece is a Gibson J100 acoustic guitar from the year 1943. Other bells and whistles such as designer clothes I do not care. However, I should go to buy clothes.

Why?

I can not find most of them. That's why I wear the jacket I'm wearing, continuously for the past two weeks. My stuff should be in any case either in a rental warehouse in Los Angeles or in my London apartment. I rather think the latter. I've just seen pictures of my old roommate Tom Sturridge, running around in my pants and shirt ... (laughs).

(Tink: Translations are always hilarious. Case in point, this bizarre change of subject LOL)

They also suffer from depression. Are you in therapy?

I would really like to try, but just the thought of it makes me nervous. I think I am a person who needs his emotional ups and downs. I'm not manic-depressive, and I cross my psycho-valleys pretty quickly.

Robert Pattinson: "It is nice to look at my resume now. I’d be jealous of me if I wasn’t me."

image hostRob talked to the Chicago Sun Times about The Rover and had a fun Q&A interview:

A steak in his heart: Robert Pattinson yearns for Chicago beef

Maybe it’s a nod to his former vampire alter ego, but Robert Pattinson wants blood.

“I was having a dream the other night about a Chicago steak,” the actor said Tuesday. “I had one on the first ‘Twilight’ tour, and certain things just stick in your mind. Maybe it’s my inner vampire coming out again.”

With a trademark laugh, Pattinson knows he will get his wish. He will film the gangster movie “Idol’s Eye” with Robert De Niro in Chicago in October. “I love Chicago,” he says. “It’s one of those cities where I can walk around and people are really kind. They respect that there are times I need a little silence.”

He also found that silence working in the Australian Outback for his new movie “The Rover” (opening Friday), where Pattinson plays Ray, a young man on a mission to survive a wild desert trip and killing spree with another drifter played by Guy Pierce.

Q. What was it like filming in the Outback?

A: I really love the desert because you can be alone, which is very nice. I could just wander off a bit and no one cared because there wasn’t a single soul for thousands of miles. Most of the towns where we filmed had one street. The other cool thing is that when I was mobbed, it was by a bunch of kangaroos who lived there or the wild camels. I respect these people who are out there, too, living off the grid. It was perfect for me to be a bit off the grid where I didn’t have to look over my shoulder. No one was taking a picture of me doing something stupid.

Q. You’ve said that you had to audition for Rey in “The Rover.” Really? After starring in that big franchise?

A: One hundred percent I have to audition unless I’m playing something in my wheelhouse. If I’m doing a vampire thing, they better hire me. You’ve seen my vampire act.

Q. You’ve had quite a few years with your life splashed out in the tabloids. How do you keep it together and not develop an attitude?

A: I really don’t know how I do it. It’s weird. I went through a period where I was a bit more stressed. Once I got through that period of time, I just figured that your life contracts a little bit when you get famous. Yes, I was frustrated about not doing the things I used to do, like walking around anonymously. But you get used to it. In the end, I just let it all go and have accepted that it’s a different kind of life.

Q. You have films coming up from David Cronenberg [“Maps to the Stars” this fall] and Werner Herzog, plus the De Niro movie. Have you shaken Edward Cullen from “Twilight” off for good?

A: I’m constantly surprised that I’ve been able to have a career post-”Twilight.” I still think it’s going to end at any second. I always figured anything else after “Twilight” was just a bonus. ... It is nice to look at my resume now. I’d be jealous of me if I wasn’t me.

Q. Finally ... you’re a steak guy and not a Chicago pizza type?

A. Let’s clear this up. I’m 100 percent a Chicago pizza guy, but when you’ve been dreaming of a good steak, you need to start with a knife and a fork in your hands — and some good steak sauce.

TheBrisbaneTimes.com The Rover puts Robert Pattinson on road to redemption

The vampire is dead. Or at least by now he should be. With The Rover, the new film from Animal Kingdom director David Michod, Robert Pattinson has finally shaken off the Twilight tag that threatened to define him forever as an actor.

In The Rover, he has an accent from America's deep south, bad teeth and a strange emotional dependency on others. It’s a role that has attracted some very positive reviews: Variety critic Scott Foundas talked about ‘‘a career-redefining performance ... that reveals untold depths of sensitivity and feeling’’.

Pattinson is a relaxed interview subject. He has a hearty laugh, and the air of someone who hasn’t worked out all his lines in advance, but he’s also ready to explain and explore what interests him. He’s serious about his work, and keen to make movies with people he admires and respects.

He’s aware that he’s getting favourable reviews for The Rover. He’s happy about this, of course, he says, ‘‘because I really love the movie’’. But when it comes to his performance, he admits, ‘‘I always think of it as a work in progress, and it just gets frustrating, thinking about things you could fix.’’

At the same time, when he read the script, it was one of those rare occasions when he connected immediately with a role.‘‘Maybe because it was so loose - you could really do almost anything with the character. You could project anything onto it. But I don’t know, I could hear the voice in my head almost immediately, I could feel a walk ... and that’s only happened to me three or four times since I’ve started acting.’’

Michod plunges the audience swiftly into the world of the film, a near-future in which Australia has become a run-down, devastated, hand-to-mouth economy. There’s an almost documentary-like immediacy, as there’s virtually no explanation of how this collapse has happened. Early on, Pattinson’s character, Rey, is taken in hand by Pearce’s character, for reasons that gradually become clear. Yet there are many things about Rey that don’t get spelled out or remain ambiguous: this is another aspect of the film Pattinson appreciates.

He spent almost no time with Pearce before shooting started. ‘‘I guess because I’d auditioned a year before, and talked to David a lot. I already basically made my mind up how I wanted to play the character. I had to keep my mouth shut, figuring out what he wanted to do, it was kind of scary.’’ He wondered what would happen if Pearce’s interpretation was totally at odds with his vision of his own character. ‘‘It’s worked out great now,’’ but there were a couple of moments at the beginning, he says, when it felt as if they were in completely different films.

American actor Scoot McNairy plays Rey’s brother, from whom he has become separated. Pattinson’s a big fan of the chameleon-like actor whose recent films include Killing Them Softly, Monsters and 12 Years a Slave. ‘‘The funny thing about Scoot is you can never recognise him,’’ Pattinson says. "I was talking to him about Argo the other day, and I didn’t realise he was in it. Absolutely no idea.’’ He gives one of his heartiest laughs. ‘‘Our whole conversation, he thought I was joking.’’

He doesn’t mind telling stories against himself, and has a self-deprecating way of talking about certainties. ‘‘I don’t know if I’m necessarily any good at ‘sculpting a career’ or anything,’’ he says, ‘‘but I know what I want to do. I’m not very good at finding or getting massive movies.’’ It turns out that he’s talking about life after Twilight. What he means, he says, is that ‘‘I don’t get approached very much about superheroes and stuff.’’

He has, however, plenty of interesting projects under way or awaiting release. The Rover premiered at Cannes, and so did Maps to the Stars, a dark comedy about Hollywood directed by David Cronenberg. He’s also made Queen of the Desert, a biopic with Werner Herzog, about British traveller, writer and political figure Gertrude Bell (Nicole Kidman). He’s playing her ally T.E. Lawrence - inevitably inviting comparisons with Peter O’Toole.

He’s recently been working on Life, an intriguing double portrait of James Dean and Dennis Stock, the Life photographer who took a famous series of portraits of the actor just before he broke through as a star in East of Eden. Pattinson plays Stock, and people assume he was attracted to the part because it is a reflection on celebrity, but he says that’s not the case. ‘‘A lot of what I was interested in was nothing to do with James Dean, or fame, or anything like that.’’ What drew him to Stock, he says, is that the character is depicted as ‘‘a really bad dad. And you don’t really see that in young guy parts. He just doesn’t love his kid, or is incapable of it, and it kind of pains him.’’

The film is also about conflicting visions of creativity, he says. ‘‘It’s a little ego battle, and a lot of it is about professional jealousy, and who’s a better artist, who’s the subject and who’s the artist.’’ Life is directed by Anton Corbijn (Control) who was a photographer before he turned to movie making.

Pattinson says his own opinions on photography are ‘‘kind of weird’’. He’s not a fan of digital image-making, he says: he feels it’s too easy, that it doesn’t require the same level of artistry as analogue photography. And, of course, he adds, experiences with paparazzi haven’t helped him appreciate photographers. ‘‘I have a very negative attitude towards photographers in a lot of ways, so it’s interesting to play one.’’

In October, he starts work on Idol’s Eye, to be directed by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas, making his Hollywood debut. Robert De Niro has just signed on. ‘‘I’m really, really excited about this one,’’ Pattinson says. It’s a true story about a group of thieves at moments of transition - from the changing face of technology in burglar alarms to the shifting realities for the Chicago Mafia.

He’s also starring in an independent post-World War I drama called The Childhood of a Leader due to shoot in September. It will be directed by actor Brady Corbet (Mysterious Skin, Funny Games), from a script he has co-written. ‘‘I’ve known Brady for 10 years, he’s great and the script is phenomenal.’’

Corbet has said he really appreciates the way Pattinson uses his celebrity to help ensure that films he admires get made. Pattinson laughs when I mention this. It’s a power he might as well use while he can, he suggests. ‘‘We’ll see how long it lasts.’’

The Rover is currently screening.

A fan sent us a link to Hillel Levin's blog where he talked about the casting of Rob and Robert De Niro. Levin is the author of the article, Boosting the Big Tuna, that inspires the film.

From HillelLevin.com:
Big news for this project out of Cannes, where director Olivier Assayas released his latest film, Clouds of Sils Maria. He will next work on Idol's Eye, a movie based on my April 2007 article for Playboy called, "Boosting the Big Tuna." The story is about burglars who break into the home of Chicago's longtime Godfather, Tony Accardo. Robert Pattinson will play the burglar ringleader, who is based on John Mendell--a freelance "juice man" or "wire man" capable of overcoming the most sophisticated burglar alarms, but also the proprietor of a machine shop who was desperate to go "legit." De Niro will play Accardo, who ruled Chicago's mob for five decades. Despite the fact that he's hardly a household name, I would argue that Accardo was America's most important organized crime figure in the twentieth century. He not only influenced politics in the Windy City, but also corrupted wide swaths of the union movement (e.g. Teamsters and Laborers), and probably did more to build the Las Vegas Strip (mostly with Teamster pension funds) than anyone else. He features prominently in my play, "Assassination Theater." By the time of the burglary, he had become practically an establishment figure in Chicago--unusually accessible to the neighbors in his wealthy suburb, courtly to the power elite, with whom he occasionally rubbed shoulders, but still bone-chillingly ruthless with anyone who crossed his path in the criminal world--as Mendell eventually found out. It will be fascinating to see De Niro's approach to the part. One funny note: the dispute between Accardo and Mendell centers on the burglary of a high-end pawn shop. Somehow, in the mix of accents at Cannes, "pawn" got turned into "porn." I hope the reality here does not disappoint.

Ok back to serious talk. This is CRAZY exciting. I've been vibrating from the excitement since yesterday and it just keeps getting better! You can google Rob's character name (click HERE to see  picture) if you want to know his story but know there will be spoilers since it's historical fact out there.

As you already know, Robert De Niro casting news broke yesterday. Today, it looks like Rachel Weisz will be joining the Roberts!

From Variety:
Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz is in negotiations to join Robert Pattinson and Robert De Niro for Olivier Assayas’ sprawling Chicago-set gangster drama “Idol’s Eye,” which is due to start shooting in the fall.
Charles Gillibert at Paris-based CG Cinema is lead-producing the film with American partners Benaroya Pictures, which is financing and producing, as well as Bluegrass Films’ Scott Stuber, Film 360’s Scott Lambert, Alexandra Milchan and Michael Benaroya. Ben Sachs is exec producing for Benaroya Pictures.

Previously titled “Hubris,” the project is based on a 2007 Playboy article called “Boosting The Big Tuna” by Hillel Levin. It follows a group of thieves who rob a man who turns out to be Chicago mafia boss Tony Accardo.
Script is penned by Assayas, who won a Golden Globe for “Carlos the Jackal,” his mini-series starring Edgar Ramirez as Venezuelan revolutionary Ilich Ramirez Sanchez.
International Film Trust, the outfit topped by Christian De Gallegos and launched last year by Benaroya and Miscellaneous Entertainment, is repping foreign sales on “Idol’s Eye.”
CAA, which arranged financing, will represent domestic rights along with WME.
Weisz is repped by Independent Talent Group, CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Assayas’ latest film, “Clouds of Sils Maria,” produced by Gillibert’s CG Cinema, competed at Cannes.
Rob was supposed to be with Rachel in Unbound Captives...then Maps To The Stars....is Idol's Eye third times the charm? We can not WAIT for this movie. It's looking to be a HUGE deal. :))))
