Josh Safdie and Claire Denis share gracious words and funny stories about Robert Pattinson with Les Cahiers du Cinéma (France)

Josh Safdie and Claire Denis share gracious words and funny stories about Robert Pattinson with Les Cahiers du Cinéma (France)

image hostPAW snatched up a copy of Les Cahiers du Cinéma and posted two great interviews that mentioned Rob. First up is from the upcoming Good Time directors, Josh and Benny Safdie. Josh is speaking in this excerpt and has one of those great Rob tidbits to share (are you googling the toilets?) and then of course has nothing but awesomeness to share about Rob's work ethic.

The second interview is from Claire Denis regarding High Life, one of Rob's films in pre-production. She too has kind words to share but also notes something Josh mentioned - Rob is a go-getter. We pretty much know this already from Rob's admission but I love reading it from these directors he admires. Especially Denis. She doesn't realize he's had her name on his lips for yeeeears. That's one of Rob's bucket list directors and I think it's inspiring he was unwavering in what he desired professionally.

The Safdie Brothers talk about Rob and Good Time (excerpt):

LCDC: We are one month away from the festival: is the film complete?
Josh: Almost: Oneohtrix Point Never made the music, and for the end they wanted a song en interaction with the film. We asked Iggy Pop, and he sings an incredible song in the style of Johnny Cash. Do you know how I learned we were in competition? Six months ago I was in Los Angeles at Robert Pattinson's house. He has Japanese toilet that blows hot air. I had never experienced such a thing ... I loved it so much that Robert said to me: if we go in competition, I buy you the same. And we were invited out of competition. Six hours before the press conference, we had a meeting to find out if we were really out of competition, because at the same time we were invited to La Quinzaine, and Rob was trying to contact me over and over again, but i was at this meeting, and suddenly he sent me a text message with a photo of the toilet! Thierry Frémaux had just announced him we were in competition. I was extremely surprised! It was extraordinary.
...
LCDC: This is the first time you work with a star.
Josh: Pattinson is English, and the actors around him come from the world of the film. He spent five months working on his character. He doesn't have the experience of this life. I wrote him a biography from the day he was born to the first minutes of the film. We wanted to shoot into the streets, but wherever we went, people wanted to take a picture of him. We developed the appearance of his character so that nobody recognizes him. But he is so professional! He is never complaining. It's him who contacted us. He had seen a picture of Mad Love in New York on the Internet, he asked to see the movie, he saw it, and told us: whatever you want me to do, I will do it.

Claire Denis talks Rob and getting High Life going:
image host image host
LCDC: What about your science fiction project?
Claire Denis: It's a SF project, but in my own way, very software (laughs)! (...) I'm strarting the preparation in a few weeks. It's an English-language movie that will be filmed in Germany. (...) It takes place in the space, not on Earth. This is a project I have had in my mind for the last fifteen years. At the time I thought of Vincent Gallo to play the leading role but the producers are often afraid of him. One day Robert Pattinson contacted the person who was doing the English casting. I was intrigued but I tought he was too young. Every time I went to London to meet some actors, he was there. His desire to work with me has never faltered. And now he is a little less young and it's perfect.
LCDC: He is one of those actors whose we can feel the intelligence when they play.
Claire Denis: Yes, absolutely. He has a lot of humor too. I tought it was so strange that this young man wanted so much to work with me when he could do whatever he wanted. I was almost embarrassed. But his unwavering envy and our mutual recognition have done their work.

New Quotes:

About shooting the scene on the beach:
"The whole bumper fell off; it was wild (laughing)!"

About linking memories with certain smells:
"I remember my dad wearing Brut de Fabergé. He still has it, and it reminds me of my early school days."

About linking cities or countries with certain smells:
"My dad is from Yorkshire. There are moors/swamps and heather everywhere - the smell is incredible. We used to spend Christmas there, and although I haven't been there for years, this smell stayed with me somehow."

About his favorite smell:
"I like the smell of people (laughing)." (Then he talks about discovering perfume when he was 12 years old.)

About his perfect day:
"I can't tell exactly, I like to occupy myself with things. At the moment, I'm working on a story with a friend. I like to talk to people and work on projects with them. And I like to argue with people every now and then (laughing)."

He talks about Death Grips being his favorite band right now.

He talks about his clothing style (we heard about that before in other interviews; nothing new there).

Last question: Twilight made you famous, Cosmopolis changed your Image and Romain Gavras' campagne film for Dior gives your charakter something unexpected. How sweet ist the smell of success?
"Being an actor is weird and the definition of success (...) changes over the years. Of course there is a sweet side to success: I don't have to worry or to work only for money, at least for the next few years. I have a huge respect of all these movies, that's why I try to take the time and energy to make these exciting decisions not everyone makes. (...) But I don't feel I've already been that successful. There's something about Dior that suits me: The brand is staying persistently independent and that's what I want for myself right now."

Thanks so much Andrea!

Rob's Interview

Idol chatter

ROBERT PATTINSON is taking his first few steps on a long road. You don’t get any sense that he is ashamed of Twilght. He would be a fool (and he’s no fool) to adopt any such stance. One can, after all, safely assume that the adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire novels have put him in a position where he need never work again. But, as the final part looms, he wants to put some distance between himself and the pale, dreamy Edward Cullen.

The latest lunge for freedom involves a fascinating collaboration with David Cronenberg. The Canadian director’s Cosmopolis, adapted from a novel by Don DeLillo, finds the Tsar of Cheekbones playing a young asset manager confined within an absurdly well-appointed limousine.

Pattinson has arrived in Cannes to promote the film. But nobody is allowing him to escape his past life. Why, Eric Packer, the protagonist of Cosmopolis, is just a another class of vampire, is he not? Pattinson must identify with him personally. Like Mr Packer, the actor – a victim of hyper-fame – is driven into a class of seclusion.

“I’m not the best self-analyst,” Pattinson says in his polite accent. “I can’t consciously bring anything from my life into my work. I don’t know. He is just trying to find something. It’s about the hopelessness of it all. It’s about the claustrophobia of being looked at. I wasn’t that much of a social person anyway. So, I don’t really care. Why can I not just answer the question?”

Raised in outer London, Pattinson spent some time as a model before drifting into acting. He remembers, with some embarrassment, securing a role in Mira Nair’s Vanity Fair, then turning up at the premiere to find that all his scenes had been cut. Further inconveniences followed. He was sacked from a play in the Royal Court. But he then managed to gain a part in the cinematic behemoth that was Harry Potter. Unfortunately, Cedric Diggory was among of the select band of Hogwarts students to be killed off. What were the odds?

Then came Twilight, and much to his surprise, he soon found himself an object of fanatical desire. But he does seem to be telling the truth when he claims that he prefers the quiet life. He has, for example, kept admirably quiet about his relationship with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart.

“When you are followed constantly by fanatical fans, you try to eliminate the times you come up against them. That’s why I hide myself sometimes,” he said recently.

A serious cinema nut, he was never likely to resists the opportunity to work with Cronenberg. The director of Dead Ringers, The Fly and Eastern Promises remains the most singular cinematic terrorist of his era. Pattinson does not pause when asked what drew him to Cosmopolis.

“Cronenberg, obviously! I have played in only a few films, and none of them came close to what I expected working with him would be like. I wasn’t disappointed. I knew he would be very creative, and that it would be a real experience,” he says.

But David is an odd, fellow, is he not? The most cerebral director ever to launch a horror career, he is more likely to reference Freud and Nietzsche than Wes Craven or George A Romero. “For preparation, I spent two weeks in my hotel room worrying and confusing myself,” he laughs. “The weekend before we began shooting, I phoned David and said I want to ask one question: ‘Do you want to talk about the movie for a second?’ I went round to his house and he said: ‘Let’s just start and something will happen’.”

He furrows his magnificent brow and whitters some more about the poetry of the script, before breaking down.

“If you’re trying to do something in a cerebral way, it becomes about ego. Actors aren’t supposed to be intelligent.”

He does himself a disservice. Pattinson has the chops to separate himself from young Mr Cullen and forge a career among the living. But it is a long, long road. Be aware, Robert. Fifty years on from Dr No, journalists are still asking Sean Connery about James Bond.

David's Interview

Gruesome truths

A RUMBLE OF THUNDER greets the arrival of David Cronenberg. It would be unfair to say that it’s a little like a scene from one of his films. The director is far too clever to dabble in such crude sound design. Besides which, we no longer think of him as a Gothic figure. Do we? At any rate, the pathetic fallacy certainly provides Mr Cronenberg with a dramatic entrance.

The Cannes Film Festival is drawing to a close and Mr Cronenberg has arrived on the penthouse of the Marriot Hotel to discuss his strange new film, Cosmopolis. Robert Pattinson plays a rich young man travelling through an apocalyptic New York in a huge, self-sufficient limousine. Though based on a Don DeLillo novel written as long ago as 2003, Cosmopolis has plenty to say about the current financial meltdowns.

Cronenberg has always made serious films. Early works, made on minuscule budgets in his native Canada, such as Shivers and Rabid abounded with disgusting imagery, but they addressed complex questions concerning mortality and the nature of human sexuality.

Robert Pattinson talks about Cosmopolis, Twilight, Kristen Stewart & his prostate

Translation...:
The interview was done during Cannes. The interviewer precises that Rob was eating a lollipop.

In the movie, you get your prostate checked? Is yours asymmetrical too?
Rob: *laughs* I haven't checked that yet! Everybody talks about it, it's crazy how that line marked people.

Did you feel up to the task to take on this role?
Rob: When David Cronenberg called me I was in the middle of shooting Breaking Dawn. There were only three weeks left. As soon as I got home, I pounced on the script and read it in one sitting, in one night. It was really strong, complex and freaky but so funny!

Your character speaks all the time, weren't you scared?
Rob: The risk of failure was huge. At first, I told David I didn't feel ready for the challenge. There was too much pressure, but he convinced me. Even though he knew I didn't understand anything from the script. *laughs*

What didn't you get?
Rob: For Cronenberg, everything made sense. The fact that I didn't understand didn't bother him. He was more concerned about my performance. The world of finance means nothing to me. It conceals an absurd distortion of power struggles. But it's not the end of the world, it's a rebirth because this world needs sometimes to be cleansed and purified.

Your character tries to escape from himself. Since you became famous - and with all these paparazzi hanging on to your coat-tails - are you experiencing the same thing?
Rob: I try not to think about it, I only do my job. I stay cautious about all of this but it's still weird. It's like speaking in your sleep. Cosmopolis is a challenging movie that will open doors for me to new projects. I am very pleased. Saying that though, I can't compare this with my private life even if I feel completely claustrophobic.

Are you relieved that Twilight is over now and that you can now move on to something else?
Rob: I will never disown Twilight. It was my job security. I'll never try to find excuses. The advantage now is that directors think differently. As an actor, it's something you've always dreamed about.

Lots of people think it's because of Twilight that you're pushed to do more diarist and intellectual movies ...
Rob: I did little movies before Twilight. People only notice you when they feel like it. It depends from one type of audience from another. I 'acted' too in Twilight. It was a beautiful period in my life but now it's time to turn the page.

Are you still offered heartthrob's roles?
Rob: It's not always easy to play heartthrob. You need to be extremely confident or be completely oblivious to what people think of you. I like to keep my integrity as an actor.

Did you see 'On the Road' in which your girlfriend, Kristen Stewart, has a role?
Rob: Yes and it's sort of weird to see her like this. To have people clapping for you at Cannes, a Festival that's a little crazy and with so many people, is funny. We might expect those kind of reactions but always end up being surprised.

Did you become up professional opponents?
Rob: No, never. For a year now we both had the chance to evolve in the job we love, especially in those amazing movie projects. Kristen is really ambitious. She knows how to find good scripts, she has the nose for that. I admire her.
We wanted people to respect and understand our choices. During the Cosmopolis screening at Cannes, I was a nervous wreck. I was looking in front of me, behind me, trying to guess people's reactions. I was trying to listen for whispers. And in the end, I missed half the movie. *laughs* At the after party that followed, I was even more terrified at the prospect of having to face people's comments.

Will you be in a movie together after Twilight?
Rob: Yes, absolutely. We're trying to write a script together. It won't be for now but we've thought about it for a long time. The filming of the last two movies was long and difficult. My character doesn't change, he can't die. We finish on a high note.

Water for Elephants is a romantic drama where lovers are played by Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. The star of the movie is however its biggest star, elephant-Tai, who made her way into Pattinson’s heart.

Robert Pattinson plays a veterinary student in a film based on Sara Gruen's bestseller Water for Elephants set in 30’s depression in United States. Life treats Jacob (Pattinson) hard until he gets a job in acircus as a veterinarian. It's lead by cruel ringmaster August (Christoph Waltz). His young wife Marlena (Reese Witherspoon) is the draw of the circus and Jacob becomes attracted to her. The movie is directed by Francis Lawrence.

For the last 6 months Pattinson has been filming the last two parts of the Twilight saga in Louisiana. The actor made a quick stop in Los Angeles before heading to Vancouver to finish the filming of Breaking Dawn.

Water for Elephants was mostly filmed in California near the farms where exotic animals are kept for filming purposes. The movie begins tragically but these events lead Jacob to animals and love.

"Basically life flipped him finger. He has no way to turn back to his old life so the only possibility is to leave distress behind and look forward. Everything happens so fast that Jacob didn’t even have time to wallow in self-pity. I thought that it must have felt like a shock. I didn’t have many lines in the beginning so I just played with gestures, expressions and other physical ways," Pattinson tells.

An english survey says that 87% of english women, of every age would replace their husbands immediately with Robert Pattinson. And I suspect that every woman in the world would do the same. Pattinson, 25 next May 12, (Kate: I think you mean May 13th!) a very tall man (1.85 cm) skinny, pale and apparently unhappy (as vampires should be), (Kate: You mean Edward is unhappy? Rob looks perfectly happy to me!) is the center of a mass idolatry similar only to the Leonardo di Caprio’s (Titanic).

Another movie, Breaking Dawn, divided in two chapters (first will come out November 18th 2011, second one November 16th, 2012) after that date Twilight Saga and his Edward will be in retirement. And he and Kristen Stewart will be free, if they want to, to live their love freely, a love that they never confirmed.

Since the series began, in 2008, semi-unknown Pattinson, chosen from 5000 candidates, has risen to 15th place on the most payed actors list. For Breaking Dawn he asked and obtained $12.5milion for every movie; when he changed genre he renounced to a lot of money: for his new job “Water for Elephants” he asked only $1.5milion . “But I need to put my foot down and to wake up”, he says very seriously. Based on Sara Gruen's most successful novel, set in the ’30s, the movie follows Jacob that becomes a vet in a circus by chance. And falls in love with Marlena (Reese Whiterspoon), even though she is married to the ringmaster and animal trainer August (Christoph Waltz).

What attracted you to this story?
RP: The script: I react to words and descriptions in a visceral way. If I can feel myself in the story immediately, then this must be the right script to do.

Robert Pattinson stars in one of the hottest movies this month, Water For Elephants, and he tells us what it’s all about!

Dressed in black jeans, plaid shirt over a white t-shirt and a gray wool jacket, Rob sat down to talk with us about how his new movie is a good opportunity for this irresistible hottie!

17: What made you participate in this film?
RP: Before reading the script or the book (the movie is based on the novel, Water For Elephants by Sara Guen) Francis, the director, took me to the Elephant Sanctuary where Tai lives (the elephant who plays Rosie). I arrived, and immediately started playing with her. I thought, “I will have the opportunity to work with Tai for four months, I’m definitely accepting this role!”

17: What is the relationship between Marlena And Jacob, like?
RP: The relationship between Marlena and Jacob gets complicated with time. Marlena is trapped in a abusive marriage. I think Jacob is a good guy and I didn't want to play him as someone who comes to the circus world, that was created out of nothing by August, to steal his wife and destroy his life.

17: What is your character, Jacob, like?
RP: He had to face the challenge of losing his parents at an early age and has had to learn to move on.

17: What do you do on a day off?
RP: i play a game in my iphone application called Fall Down, I can use it for 16 hours

17: What makes you really happy?
RP: Music, I went to New Orleans and played the piano with the Preservation Hall Jazz band. It was amazing, I was fascinated. (Kate: I'm still waiting patiently to see a vid of this. It HAS to be out there somewhere!)
