West Side Story Revisited
With West Side Story finally getting its first Broadway revival, photographer Mark Seliger re-creates scenes from the beloved 1961 film version with the help of Jennifer Lopez and friends. Maria, Tony, Anita, Bernardo, and Riff live again—at least until the end of Act I. Jim Windolf fills in the scenario. Related: “Broadway Goes West,” by James Wolcott.
THE DANCE
Between Maria (Camilla Belle, far left) and Tony (Ben Barnes, far right, also known as Prince Caspian), it is dancing, dancing, dancing. Latin steps predominate on the left, as the Sharks and their ladies give America a taste of the culture to come. On the right, we have a series of funky Anglo moves, as the Jets and their gals go rhythmically at it. On either side, our two tragic protagonists have eyes only for each other. The lead Sharks dancers are Anita (J.Lo, in an incredible pose) and Bernardo (Rodrigo Santoro). The Jet girl dancing with Riff (Chris Evans) is played by Ashley Tisdale (of High School Musical fame). Rounding out the Sharks, left to right: Minka Kelly (she’s Lyla on Friday Night Lights), Jay Hernandez, Natalie Martinez (Death Race), Brandon T. Jackson, Melonie Diaz (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints). On the Jets’ side: Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Shane Lynch (she’s gonna be big), Robert Pattinson, Cam Gigandet, Trilby Glover (88 Minutes), Brittany Snow (Hairspray), Drake Bell.

ReplyDeleteThey do these elaborate set-ups for stuff like this, openings, whatever. They're always dressing up celebs as other characters no matter if they relate to them or not, get it?
This is just a goofy fun thing, no one in there has anything to do with West Side Story.

Ok...researched a bit. Googled and found that other ladies, Not Camilla and J Lo, are playing Maria and Anita. So the rest are doubtful. I think it's weird VF had this shoot done w/o the real cast. ?

Which one is Cam? and Ben Barnes is the hotness. Rob's hair is perfect for the part!!! lol

Rob is also on the one when they're jumping, they mention his name and what he's wearing...too bad Chris Evans is blocking him with his hand.

Good for Rob! This looks like fun. Wow J-Lo looks amazing as Anita. Secretive shoot. I guess I've just been living in Robsessed land. I don't get why he isn't more prominently featured. Don't you just wanna see this up close like? Christy he's in the back with his arms in the air and really bouffant hair next to the girl in the red dress.

ReplyDeleteWhy is Rob all the way at the back? You can barely even see him! Poor decision by the editors/photographer to place him there. I'm speaking without bias when I say he should be at the front. And why is Camille Belle always around? Someone out there is really trying to further her career but it doesn't seem like anybody cares. I personally find her a bit of an attention whore.
