Robert Pattinson "The Haunted Airman" DVD Review *Updated*

Gozde's update note: Lex Walker, the unfortunate "movie critic" that wrote the below review went back and edited some parts of it after the comments posted on his so called review pointed out that Rob made The Haunted Airman years before Twilight. It would have been nice, if, instead of going back and editing the piece, he would have written a correction but I guess it's too much to expect. Critics should be able to critic themselves when they make a mistake, unfortunately they are usually too full of themselves to do so... The additions he made to the review afterwards are in red. He also deleted one part, that's in bold.

Shame on you Mr. Walker...

From Just pressplay.com
Robert Pattinson finds himself facing the same mountain that Daniel Radcliffe has begun to successfully scale: living down the pop-culture mantle cast upon him. Unlike Radcliffe however, Pattinson has wisely chosen to start the process with all due haste so as not to be forever known as “that Twilight vampire guy”. (the following part in red was absent in the original review)However, before Twilight was even a twinkle on his horizon, he made The Haunted Airman, a made-for-television movie first aired in the UK in 2006 and canned until this 2009 release when the American audience will get another taste of pre-Twilight Pattinson. Unfortunately, there's a strong parallel between the two roles. It may help show that he can do more than brood and talk wistfully about a romance he can't let himself have (although there is an element of that here as well) but there's still one distracting drawback: he still looks like a vampire. The Haunted Airman follows the right path to help Pattinson to that effect save for one thing: he still looks like a vampire. So much so that it outshines an unfortunately dim narrative which never fully establishes itself because of its stunted 70 minute run-time. You can see the plans for a good feature-length story, but the whole thing just peters out instead of climbing to the fully deserved dramatic climax. What a shame.(the following part in red was absent in the original review)Consequently it does little to help convince non-Pattinson fans of his range (which does exist).

Grounded flight lieutenant Toby Jugg (Pattinson) has taken psychological refuge in the care of Dr. Hal Burns (Julian Sands) who proposes a unique style of treatment (for all his patients) to get people back on their feet. As Burns treats Jugg and forces him to confront facets of his fears, he also denies his patient communication which begins to make Jugg doubt the good doctor’s intentions. The object of Toby’s written affections, Julia (Rachael Stirling), seems to mirror his sentiments but her compliance with Burns’ doctrine causes the patient a growing sense of unease. Eventually Toby begins to doubt his senses and eventually begins to wonder if the things he sees are real or hallucinations of his mania.

The familiar thriller skeleton was reanimated in the time of a world war to give the well-worn material a new spin – but it still feels all too old. The parts of The Haunted Airman that seem worthwhile in their own right never receive the development they deserve. Instead, it spends all its time rehashing the very generic story and consequently becomes just another lazy psychological playground. There was ample opportunity to tie Toby’s delusions into the unique time period setting and explore it fully from that angle, but it just never happens. Writers Chris Durlacher and Dennis Wheatley taunt us with the story they could have told and then just yank it away with no remorse.

As was said before, what really makes the film significant is the performances within and whether or not they help Pattinson distract from his pop-culture rampant appearance in the Twilight series (the following part in red was absent in the original review)- even retroactively. For most, this will be the second film they see Pattinson star in, making Twilight their frame of reference for the actor's abilities. Pattinson’s Toby Jugg easily has more depth than the brooding and terse vampire Edward, but thanks to the makeup effects and the black and white sequences in the film we’re reminded all too readily of the bloodless cheeks he sports in the other franchise. At least Radcliffe didn’t go on to play a young magician or facially scarred youth in his first non-Potter features, he at least had some sense of the distance he needed to place between his fame and his long-term career. (the following part in red was absent in the original review). The film's rerelease almost four years later for mass consumption does little to bolster his credibility. His performance may be stronger but it screams an unfortunate theme of dull characters. Even Little Ashes, in which he portrayed Salvador Dali, offered little variation in his distant and aloof style which has pervaded both Toby and Edward.Pattinson seems ignorant to this.(Gozde: He deleted the Pattinson seems ignorant part since the only person that's ignorant is Lex Walker here.)

Then we have Julian Sands, an actor it’s nigh impossible to say anything good about without adopting the same tongue in cheek attitude you think he’s using for all of his parts – even though he’s not. That’s just how he acts. His smarmy overacting affects every scene and after awhile you either learn to laugh along with his performance or it just bugs you. The former is recommended for The Haunted Airman, or the 70 minutes will feel like forever.

Visually the film has a very interesting aesthetic. On one hand the black and white treatment wanders too close to the Twilight feel that Pattinson needed to evade, but outside of that influence the film has definite appeal. The direction of Chris Durlacher (known for a string of made-for-television movies just like this one) lacks any real subtlety and as a result the hokey spider and spider-web visuals feel childish instead of creepy.

DVD Bonus Features:

You would like to think that they’d try to supplement a too-short film with some sort of padding (an interview or even a production piece) but it seems that’s just not the case

  1. They're reviewing it like he made this after Twilight, what idiots.

  2. I finally watched "Haunted Jawporn" last night. Sorry to be a downer, but I agree with the review. Rob looks good, and my favorite part (i.e. the only part I liked)is the extended shot of his hiney in his jammies towards the end. Without a good solid story, it's hard to have a good movie. This one just had no point, and I'm glad I only spent 1:08 on it. Also, he's so young in it, but I'm happy that he has matured so nicely!

  3. Marna, I was thinking the same thing. Haunted Airman was made for BBC TV in 2006. This was nto a part he went looking for to distance himself from Twilight. Idiot reviewer indeed!

I've seen the movie myself (when is was released on DVD here in USA) and the story is very weak. It is based on a novel written in the 1940s. And I think it was very watered down to just barely over an hour.

  4. i also watched this movie for the first time yesterday.

was it good? not really. the end was just horrible.

was it totally worth watching because rob is superhawt in it (and just in it, period)? abso-freakin-lutely.

did i find myself rewinding A LOT to rewatch any scene with his skin showing? umm, yes, yes i did.

although the plot was bad, i thought rob gave a really good performance. having only seen him in twilight, and not loving his acting in that, i was afraid he may not have a long acting career, but i am not worried now. :)

  5. @Marna
I was about to make the same point myself! You beat me to it! LOL
I actually liked this a lot.
First time this was actually shown on BBC1 I fell asleep halfway through it ...one too many glasses of wine! What sacriledge LOL Watched it again on YouTube and was well impressed with Rob's perfomance..he was ony 20 at the time.

  6. Bad research job, guys! Maybe you should have checked that THA was made long before TW - that would have affected your review a tiny bit!

But I agree with part of the review: The story is weak, bad raw material. But that's not Robs fault - he cannot help it. He probably found the part challenging at that time (or he simply needed a job).

    ReplyDelete
  7. I agree with Marna and angie-k. Pattinson was much younger when he did this and it's a made for TV movie, not a feature film!

    ReplyDelete
  8. While, I have to agree that The Haunted Airman was no where near any thing Emmy worthy. It is what it is, a BBC made for television movie and like all other BBC films, it's dark, dreary, dry and a wee short in length.

    ReplyDelete
  9. ITA..the movie/script was not very good-but it's only a TV movie...a movie he I'm sure thought no one would ever see.

However; I love it because I think Rob is fabulous in it..and his brooding, fear and loneliness just kills me...

And that fact there is so much Rob skin just makes it all the better to watch...but the ending...weird!!

The bathtub scene, and the nurse rubbing down his back, and then him sliding out of bed in his jammies, YUM!

    ReplyDelete
  10. seriously, do your research before you write a review!!! what a freaking moron.

This isn't on my list of movies to watch in full, because I can't deal with spiders {shudders}, and I know from reading comments that this was made years ago as a tv movie, but I'm sure, as always, Rob's performace was good. But he wasn't trying to look like a vampire, this was long before he'd even heard of Twilight. grrr, this idiot pisses me off!

    sorry, done w/rant :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. *%^#^&%(&^&$^# Does this reviewer even know when this short film was made? !!!!

    (The was my first reaction.)

    Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  12. @Pet73

I bet he did it because it was a job, maybe he liked the story as well (I guess he did) but I agree with the review that it was too rushed.

I watched THA quite a while ago and not ever since. Its good once but after that, even with Rob in it, I wasnt really interested in it anymore. A movie has to be really good to make me go back and watch it again.

  21. I agree with you ladies. What the heck! Rob did this movie years before Twilight. He looks beautiful. It's not his fault the movie/script sucked. Even with that, I thought Rob did a great job with what he had to work with. Julian Sands is an awful actor. Rob could have done this movie by himself and it probably would have been better.

  22. RPL,

LMAO, yeah, he doesn't need to know everything!

  27. Goz, thanks so much for calling this guy out and posting in red what he should have put in an addendum. It's tiring to find critics who haven't done their due diligence before posting a review.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree that the guy should have done his homework before writing this review, the one positive thing is that he acknowledges that Rob has range as an actor. It seems to me that his critique is addressed more to the screenplay and realisation rather than to Rob, though, and I have to agree that the film could have been longer and better developed. Still, Toby Jugg is my favourite character, so far, because of the way Rob plays it (together with Salvador Dalì, whatever this guy's opinion).

For the record, never for a second did I think of Edward while watching Toby Jugg. And to call Robert ignorant is short-sighted, to say the least.

@rpattzgrl: Re: pictures. HOLY JESUS, JOSEPH AND MARY!!! is all I can say...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think the critic didn´t liked have been called by fans, so he added more to his review .. the truth is that the film is not good, the story was rushed, and it is difficult to understand what is going on with the character, but I liked Rob performance in it, I think he did a good job with the material that was given. But the truth is that for critics, he is and will be the sparkly vampire, they like to mock that and no matter if Rob is good in it or he really deserved the bad review, he will never be enough for any part, just because critics like to look like smartass above the rest. I could care less what a critic think, even if he were telling us Rob did spectacular job.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So true Mechevpao. His WHOLE review was based on the fact that he looked like a vampire. He started from that and went with it.

Just goes to show how hard a time Rob is going to have in his future movies.

I have LONG ago stopped reading what critics say. They made me see really bad movies when I was in college. I'll go and make my own damn mind. Thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
  31. What a cretin! I hate critics, they're just old farts usually who are cranky douchebags. However, even if they're not old, they're still usually douchbags. LOL!

@Mech-Hey gal! Miss you. Well said chica!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Seems like I recall a story a long time ago about a critic, or maybe an acting teacher, who told Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood they'd never amount to anything at all cause they were such bad actors.

Some of you may be too young to know those guys but..........the both did pretty darn well for themselves and their acting careers.

Critics are useless - the public makes up their own mind.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Gozde-say it girl! I agree totally.

    @RPattzgrl-Damn gal! Those pics are lethal....GAH....*thud*. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. This isn't the first time Robsessed and perhaps other fansites have known more, and have had to correct, what is written on Rob. Wouldn't it be interesting if journalists, reporters, reviewers, etc, actually obsessed about FACTS?This, by the way, is why one has to be so careful reading/listening to anything in the media; standards for non-bias, for researching, for actually looking into something more than the surface or one's impressions, seem to be rare, almost non-existent--not just in ragazines, but in papers, 'news' programs, etc. 'Journalists' and 'reporters' write for the paycheck, not to observe, inform, investigate.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hey Femroc, I know who you are talking about, i think they are actually good, they both found the genre to act into too..

Gozde, I agree .. I have seen so many films that were so good according to critics, but that I ended disliking; but then there are films that may have gotten terrible reviews but made me laugh or cry so much, enjoying them... the truth is that, specially nowadays, anyone with a blog about movies can be a critic, they will give their "smart savvy" reviews to anyone whiling to read them; but at the end of the we as viewers are the one paying money to watch something, so it our own call to say if we like it or not. And yes, I´m afraid Rob can prove all he want that he might be good at this, but critics won´t give him a chance.

Hey CG... how are you girl?.. hugs!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Great work if you guys are responsible for getting him to change his review-although it was only to make him look slightly less idiotic.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I just finished watching this and I didn't think it was bad. It was ok but Rob's acting was pretty good considering how young he was in the Movie. My only complaint would be that it was hard to see things at times since the film was mostly in the dark but I had no problem following along and ultimately the creeping ending was as I suspected. Do I need to buy this and watch it again? No. But do I think that Rob did a great job. Absolutely. I say for those who haven't seen it, to see it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I thought the movie was ok..i giggled when he moved his legs getting into the tub.. i let my daughter watch it just for the rob affect, i didnt let her watch the ending..but she said mom i like it when he says "body" shes too funny..and the smoking part..whew..wheres my fan.

Another thing..maybe i'm a little slow but i could never figure out if he wanted to kill julia or if was his medication or the doctor wanted him too..or he was just darn crazy.. i dunno

    ReplyDelete
  43. bonemama,

I didn't get that either...was he crazy or was the Dr/Aunt driving him crazy?

The smoking, good lord, he must of been in heaven smoking as much as he did...and his little butt...and that waist, ughn....

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ha! I noticed his legs moving in the bath too! Kinda like when Emmett's eating in the caf in Twi-how could the editors not catch that shizz really?

IDK...I liked the movie when I watched it on Youtube and since it finally got released in the US I bought it and watched it again...and I still like it....but then I generally enjoy weird ass BBC movies anyway...(oh, and I wanted to lick the screen, a lot)

what I can't believe is that some dumbass would write a review w/o even checking when the film originally came out...why does it seem like we have to run around setting people straight all the time...ugh!

    ReplyDelete

  84. rpg- Apparently I'm kind of a special case this evening...

So, for example, when you post a link here in the comments that cuts off (I know most links do), how do I highlight the rest of the link? Sometime it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Like this tongue picture I'm dying to look at cuts off after mm282/tonguene (then there's half of a letter) Whenever I try to highlight it, it just highlights up until the cutoff part and if I try to go further, it just highlights the whole comment, date and time, etc.
