It doesn't make sense to me for him to have to gain weight, at least at first, unless they film backwards. At the beginning-- at least in the book--he was poor and had to scrape and calculate to eat at the end of the month.
And Duroy is not THAT much older that he should look like man with a paunch. Just as he rises in wealth, he can eat full and regular meals. And i would think with all that action, he would be burning off his food calories.

I didn't mean he would be GAINING weight. I meant, building up some muscle, like Edward on NM. In the script he is described as a sort of chiseled chest, and Georges is only 30, so not a lot of age difference from Rob. But if he is pumping some iron, he will naturally look a bit bulkier.
Note: Remember how shocked he was on Jimmy Kimmel when the audience question asked about his shirt missbuttoning and he didn't realize it was being scrutinized? Wouldn't he freak out if he saw the scrutiny going on in here? LOL

Holy Mr. Jesus Christ...I FUCKING LOVE THE BEARD!!!
He sure as hell doesn't look like any 23 year old boy I've ever seen. That is one singularly gorgeous MAN which is why so many WOMAN have lost their goddamn minds over him. And the reason he can pull this off when so many cannot (yes, Mr. Pitt, I'm looking at you)...Rob's eyes. Yes, the jawline is almost beyond description and it's that particular feature that sets him apart, but of late I am hearing the word 'ethereal' used to describe his beauty (and that is the correct word), and THAT is coming from the eyes.
And I'm so hoping he keeps the beard for Bel Ami and not just the 'stache (I know. I know. The book says just a 'stache). It just needs a trim for the cameras and then KEEP IT ROB! 'Cause lets face it, it does make him look older. As for gaining 30 lbs.? I'm gonna guess no. The camera adds weight remember (which is why so many are surprised that he is so thin in person) and if he put that much on, he would look fat on camera.

Rob looks wonderful. The beard looks great on him and at that length would be soft. When it's short it's prickly. (well at least with other men I've know with beards, but Rob's could be different and I would love to touch it and find out).
Someone made the comment that with the beard, Rob looks like Jesus? Interesting, as that very thing is referred to in Bel Ami. For those who have read the book, I'm talking about the painting of Christ that the Walters' purchased. The difference was, Bel Ami was clean shaven ('cept the 'stache) and the Christ in the portrait, was not. When I recently reread the story and that scene, I thought...'Rob honey, you need a beard for this.' I sure hope he keeps it. And that scene is essential to the film and to Madame Walters part of the story. They cannot omit that.
And yes, he absolutely is a chameleon...

Some are mentioning that he looked serious or not happy or not something in these photos. Well, lets consider what it was he was going in there to do.
We may be facing 50 to 100 thousand dead and a country that has been shattered and he's going in there to beg the world for help. This is not a happy moment for him. It is heartbreaking. For all of us. How would it have looked if he'd walked into that building with a big smile or even a little grin on his face? In fact if you look at that first photo, it might just be the light or something but at first I thought it was a tear in his right eye. I know if I had to go before the cameras and face the world and have to try to talk about this and beg people for their help,
I'd be on my knees sobbing.
Yes, it'll be wonderful to see him again, but oh how I wish it weren't under such unimaginable circumstances. His industry has asked for his help and having never done something like this before and with his shyness, it would be perfectly understandable if he was a bit frightened by it all. But when you're asked for your help...you help.
And no, he's a professional actor and while this disaster is certainly tearing at everyone's hearts, they'll get their work done too. So will Rob.

From the look on his face, he is truly getting ready for Bel Ami - didn't he say he likes to be in solitary when preparing for a film so that he can get into the role. As for the beard...
If he's wearing it for Bel Ami and if he is invited to the Oscars, then he won't be able to shave it as he'll be right in the middle of filming. Plenty of actors have had to attend award shows with shaved heads, or dyed hair or beards, or extra weight, etc. because they are either preparing or currently filming.
