UPDATE: David also had much to say to New York Magazine:

What was it about Robert Pattinson that made you think he was the right guy for the lead?
He's the right age. He looks right. He looks good in a suit. He looks like he could be a young, tough, billionaire. And I've actually thought he was quite a good actor who was very underrated in a similar way to Keira Knightley, I think, when I was thinking of her for Dangerous Method. Both of them have had great financial success and are stars based on franchises, but of course to do that you have to have a kind of screen charisma, you have to have a presence, which you can't buy or create; you either have it or you don't. That doesn't mean you're necessarily a good actor, though. But you have at least that. I looked at all the stuff that he's done, and I thought he's a really good actor. And then I spoke to him, and thought not only that, but he's a really smart actor. And he's funny, and he's very sweet. That’s when I tried to convince him to do the movie, which he was a little afraid of, just because I think he doesn't know how good he is, basically. And I think now that he's done the movie, he's starting to understand how good he is. Because he's terrific.

And was he a fan of your work?
He knew my work, yeah. What's interesting, too, about Rob is that he's very well educated in terms of movies and movie history and foreign films. On the set, he and Juliette Binoche were talking about the most obscure French films and stuff like that together. He really knows his stuff. And yet, as I say, he's a completely down-to-earth, sweet guy. Lovely to work with. And very funny.

Are you going to go see Breaking Dawn?
I think I'll wait for the screener.

You're not going to go with the screaming fans?
Well, I don't feel the need to line up, let's put it that way. And I'm sure there's going to be big lines for it. But, you know, basically I know what Rob can do having worked with him. I don't have to see Twilight now. I certainly looked at the first two, though, when I was thinking about him.

You did?
Oh yeah, sure. And I watched Remember Me, and I watched Little Ashes. Which is maybe a movie you don't know, but he plays a young Salvador DalĂ in that movie with a Spanish accent. And I thought that was pretty interesting, very daring of him to do that, and it indicated to me that he was an interesting, serious actor.

And you were impressed with the work in the first two Twilights?
I was impressed with his screen presence and a lot of his stillness, and a lot of other things. But the other movies showed me he had range. He had the range that I wanted.

Good read over all and shares a little more about Cosmopolis. Click HERE to read in its entirety.

Speaking with IndieWire, David Cronenberg gave an update about Cosmopolis and also complimented Rob's performance yet again:

David Cronenberg, who received a career tribute just in time to promote "A Dangerous Method," told The Playlist that he was skipping out on the rest of awards season so he could spend the time finishing "Cosmopolis." "This isn't a criticism, but when you're making movies and being creative, you're not making movies to fit in awards season," he said. "It's a parallel universe, and sometimes those universes kind of intersect, but I'm going to run away and hide from all that. I'm going to Paris, and I won't be in the awards, I'll be happily in my new movie."

Cronenberg said he's finishing the sound mix in France because the film is financed as a Canada-France co-production. "The movie will be done sometime in January, but it won't be released for about a year, this time next year," he projected. "Robert Pattinson is brilliant in it." No word whether or not Cronenberg means the film won't be released theatrically or hit the festival circuit until next fall is unclear, so we'll just have to wait and see.

It's torture that we have to wait a year. Torture. But I do think it'll perform at festivals. Watch out, fests! Your female attendence demographic is about to skyrocket and a certain film will be at capacity at each stop.

  1. Again, love the way DC defends Rob, but hate that he has to.  I think what I hate more is the interviewer's very obvious disdain for Twilight, as if Rob's work in it has nothing to do with his talent.  He sounds almost shocked that DC even viewed Twilight and NM in evaluating Rob's acting chops.  WTF!!  That honestly shoudln't shock me, but it will continue to piss me off until the day I die.  The things that Rob brings to Edward as a character, the way he portrays him takes an aweful lot of ability and understanding, and that he has continued to approach it with the level of dedication and attention that he has is truly a gift to us as fans.  But, Skippy the Wonderdouche here just scoffs at the idea that a Twilight film might actually contain a performance worth looking at.  What an ass!  I love that DC immediately put him in his place.  The bottom line is that we all know that The Saga isn't going down in any annals of cinematic masterpieces.  It is what it is.  And there are a HUGE number of us who love it expressly for that.  But anyone who writes off Rob's brilliance as Edward (or Kris' amazing performance as Bella, or even Billy Burke's fantastic turn as Charlie or any of the other performances) just because it is a Twilight film only shows themself to be a biased lazy unprofessional ass.  Not that I have a strong opinion on the issue.

By the way, dude, WTF Disqus!  I feel like I have the screen size set so my 90-year-old grandmother can read over my shoulder.

  3. i really like davids honesty but sincerity toward the twilight saga with robs involvement without being cynical or insensitive like some people i love how he understands how important twilight is to him and all the positive things it has set up for robs career inspiring him to star in different films of his own. And yeah i think maybe it would be best that david would wait for breaking dawn to come either on dvd or cable, i think he will be very ipressed with robs performance in breaking dawn episode 1 because he has stepped up on so many levels playing edward as a newly wed husband going from happy and blissful to being a begrudgingl expecting father and then go back to being loving caring and on the desperate urge to save bellas life. I think david will really like it.

  5. It is so clear to me that the media and movie critics are biased against Twilight and Rob as an actor. I don't understand it, but there it is. I often wonder if he doesn't like the scripts he reads b/c people have those preconcieved notions about his talent and don't send him the really good ones. I'm so thankful David Cronenberg saw his talent and searched him out for this role. I am so seriously dying to see Cosmopolis, it almost hurts. Rob is going to kill it, like he's killing me....:)

  8. To paraphrase Cronenberg:
He looks good in a suit ( Binbag?) Tick the boxes...
    He's a really good actor ( Obviously! ) Tick...
    He's funny ( we know ) Tick...
    He's very sweet ( ditto ) Tick
He doesn't know how good he is ( Bless his modest heart ) Tick
He is an interesting, serious actor ( Bring it on ) Tick
He's terrific ( we know, again! ) Tick
He's very well educated ( good boy ) Tick
He knows his stuff ( still a good boy ) Tick
Robert Pattinson is brilliant TICK TICK TICK!
Of course WE knew ALL of this but how fantastic to ear it from David Cronenberg!
So, who is doubting about Rob's talent and potentail now-How would love to shove this in their faces!

  10. ditto. again. the way DC talked about Twilight shows how we are right about the very good job Robert did on that character. I always trying to explain it to the ones around me which don't understand or even try but is useless.
I just let it go. The loss is not mine.

  12. I am really, really very excited.
he has the fans to support him. And we all know he is a brilliant actor.
I hope that after the huge success of Twilight saga the producers and directors give him the credit he deserves.

  13. David Cronenberg shows that someone who knows the making of movies inside out, unlike the critics and gossips and pc nerds, is able to put the hype aside and look for the talent.  A good director doesn't care about story or success but cares what the actor brings on the screen, where a part can challenge him or limit him.  He's right: it was Rob's charisma in the first place that caused the frenzy for the Saga, even though he performed Edward like only he could do it. But David, not knowing how complex Edward's character was and therefore didn't want to judge Rob's acting abilities, noticed Rob's screen presence. As did Francis Lawrence too.  Unfortunately, that's one of the biggest criticism of Rob'haters': that the only thing he can do  is staring in close-up.
I'm glad David is confident enough to vent his opinion about Rob, making the cynics feel a bit uncomfortable I hope.

  16. The wonderful gals here posted the article from Time.com by a Harvard PHD about two reasons critic/haters focus on a d what it says about them. Jeez, it is a book, a movie, entertainment. Haters just get off on hating what others find fascinating.

  17. I want to welcome our new addition to Robsessed land, Mr. Cronenberg. Even though, he didn't say anything that we didn't already know about Rob, I'm still very trilled to hear from a knowledgeable MAN.

  18. Down here in Australia, I haven't seen too many good reviews BUT when you read them it is blatantly obvious the reviewer hasn't even read the books.  Surely if they're any good at reviewing that would be a given when reviewing book to films?  The box office doesn't lie though and actions speak louder than words....so we shall all bide our time knowing full well Rob will show them one day; one by one the David Cronenbergs will sing his praises then the naysayers will be eating their words.

You certainly have a way with words.... and I agree with you 100%.  What I hate about these so called Critics or interviewers is the fact that I don't really think that they all watch the movies.  They probably just watch a few minutes and judge all the films.  I mean if we seriously asked these people if they really sat and watch all of the films... how man will say YES.

Well said!  Very well said, I doubt that these so called reviewers and critics read these books.  I have never read... mind you, I don't read most reviews... they make me so angry... anyway, I don't remember anyone of them mentioning that they've read the books and the movies isn't like the books!

  25. No, I don't think so. I think they have to do it in French as well as English because of the Canadian grant.
