Uma: "my character is madlen Forestier.she is a very dynamic and active woman, robert pattinson plays the guy who makes his way to the top society by seduction. my character realises herself through her ability to manipulate with men, these two characters find each other and they kind of love each other and at the same time they don't. they use each other , hurt each others feelings. madeline would like to be professional in her job and she has to be professional wife. I am very happy that I had the chance to play clotilde and robert was my partner. i am very impressed by working wih him. he is very self-critical,like myself and he is very funny, he joked and made fun all the time, we had fun.had a really good time." George's another lover virginia walter is played by a wonderful actress kristin Scott thomas. her character helps georges to go up the career ladder. she persuades her husband, a rich newspaper owner to promote duroy, kristin scott thomas :" I wonder how the press will accept the film.its a common knowledge that newspapers, magazines , the internet influence the reader greatly.for example in the UK the press has a huge influence on people. the same happens in our film. a second class paper turns into a leading political mouthpiece used as means of propaganda and political pressure." Altogether there are more than 120 films and series based on guy de maupassant's works. "bel ami" is rightfully considered as one of his best works, and of course it has been filmed multiple times. the director of the film is a famous thetrical director and writer Declan Donellan. for whom it is a directorial debut on big screen. the premiere took place on 17 february in berlin on March 27 the film will be shown at the opening of the festival "spring Euphoria" (весенняя эйфория). and wide release is two days later from march 29.

Torture Tuesday with Robert Pattinson: 6 more weeks

Torture Tuesday with Robert Pattinson: 6 more weeks

It was announced in 2009 that Rob would be playing Georges Duroy. Waiting for this film to hit the screen has been the longest torture I've experienced in my ROBsession.

Now I don't have just one date to look forward to. I have 3!
  • May 4th at 12am ET, Bel Ami is available on VOD. Click HERE for more info on how to view the film at home.
  • June 8th, DuRob is LARGE on the big screen. The film makes it the US!
  • July 23rd, Bring DuRob into the boudoir! Click HERE to pre-order the DVD or Bluray!
To celebrate the end of a loooooooooooooooong wait, we're going to turn Torture Tuesday over to DuRob - a master of tantalizing torture. I decided for the first DuRob themed TT, we should take a trip back to Spring 2010 Budapest...

Yup. We wants to go to there?
This next video was when Rob did the "moonwalk" during filming. Or was it a lazy running man? ;) He was likely just walking backwards but what fun is that? Look for Rob bustin' a move around 3:40

After you get past the odd :30 in the beginning of this next vid, you pretty much fall in love with watching ActorRob prep his scenes and get into character. It's a bit of a bonus the video maker chose Rob's soulful voice as the musical accompaniment.

This final vid is TOO cute. After filming his scenes for the evening, he spoke Hungarian to the fans waiting for him. He thanked them from being quiet during filming, smiled, waved and slayed dozens of Hungarian women.

Rob: Torturing the ladies since 1986. See you next Tuesday with DuRob and 5 weeks left!
Oh...and because I just KNOW you want this...here's the gif of that first video. ;)

Bel Ami directors continue to praise Robert Pattinson: "He was passionately attached to the project."

Bel Ami directors continue to praise Robert Pattinson: "He was passionately attached to the project."

From Huffington Post
Robert Pattinson has made a generation of girls swoon, and brought in millions of dollars for the producers of the Twilight phenomenon, where his portrayal of Edward Cullen means he needn't get out of bed again if he doesn’t feel like it. So, it would be understandable if such adulation had gone to his pretty tousle-haired head, and made him a bit difficult to work with. How did the directors of his new film Bel Ami deal with such an idol on this, their very first film?

"He was delightful," insists Nick Ormerod, one half of the directing duo along with Declan Donnellan - established theatre directors with a body of stage, ballet and opera work more than three decades in the making, but novices when it came to film. "He did insist on rehearsing for a whole month before we did our first shoot, which is apparently unheard of in Hollywood, but he was passionately attached to the project."

"He wasn't that famous when we offered him the part," remembers Donnellan. "He'd done Harry Potter, Twilight was just starting, and I remember seeing his face on the side of a bus.

"Our film took so long to get going because it was art house, that he went off and did Twilight, so we were watching this phenomenon take place."

Bel Ami was filmed two years ago, which meant the Twi-hards were out with a vengeance by then - remember the tales of Pattinson bunkered down in America trying to film Like Water For Elephants in a small mid-western town? Donnellan and Ormerod look surprised by such unseemly tales: "We had a relatively serene experience," smiles Donnellan. "Only a tiny bit of that in Budapest. We shot in Twickenham, and there was literally no one there.

"But then, we hit the red carpet in Berlin, and it was like being in Bladerunner, an incredible experience being in the middle of this phenomenon. It was astonishing and hilarious, particularly for our first film."

Ormerod and Donnellan were steering their golden boy through the French period drama, Bel Ami, based on the short story by Guy De Maupassant, detailing the climb of a young man Georges Duroy (Pattinson) through the ranks of Parisian society, thanks to his success with the ladies who succumb to his pale, cheek-boned charm.

"Rob kept saying, 'this character has no redeeming features, he's so venal'," laughs Donnellan. "It's thrilling to see somebody like that, and Rob agreed. If he sees something he gets it, it's that base level of envy, which he can only cure by getting what the other guy has. There's no lesson in the film, our purpose is only to make you come out asking questions."

As well as Pattinson, the directors were able to tap into the talent pool of Kristin Scott Thomas, Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci, which could have been intimidating for novices behind the camera. "Uma is a great personality, she is fantastic, and she does make her opinion known, but that was absolutely fine," laughs Donnellan. "We've done a ballet with the Bolshoi before, and operas with Bryn Terfel, so we have done some scary things before.

"Kristin we knew well from our work in Paris, but Uma and Christina and Rob all came from our casting director. They all come from very different backgrounds, the one thing we all shared was not having done anything like this before.

"You go in hyper-prepared, and then when you get on the floor, you realise you actually don't need all that, and get rid of it - the storyboard is really just to reassure other people as well as yourself. Ultimately, the whole thing is improvised. Whatever you planned, you always saw something better on the day." Having set such a high bar, are Ormerod and Donnellan now claimed by the film world? "We're already back on stage, but we are definitely bitten with the bug," explains Dormerod. "We would have done more projects in the past," muses Donnellan. "But we can't bear to leave the theatre for that long - six months of lunches in Soho House is as much as we can take."

May 4th is my life now. ;)

Thanks Sky for the tip!

Sinful Sunday starring Robert Pattinson, Bel Ami, and the ladies in the dark recesses

Sinful Sunday starring Robert Pattinson, Bel Ami, and the ladies in the dark recesses

Photobucket

Bel Ami debuted this past weekend in the UK and Ireland so there must be some things you guys want to discuss. ;) Here's your spoiler thread! I'm glad it was enjoyed by many of you. I'm not the least bit surprised.

I'm including a couple of reviews (one press, one fan) to kick off the conversation.

From RadioTimes (UK):
4 out of 5 stars
It's pretty daring to take Robert Pattinson, the most fanciable young actor of his generation, and cast him alongside actresses of the calibre of Kristin Scott Thomas, Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci. But it's a risk that pays off here as his performance takes this retelling of Guy de Maupassant's tale of sex and ambition to another level. As thrilling as it is sumptuous, the first feature from theatre directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod brings Paris at the turn of the 20th century to vibrant life, as handsome, brutish social climber Georges Duroy (Pattinson) plunders and blunders his way around the women of powerful men. The stunning production design frames Duroy's amorality as it unfolds like a rotten flower, and Pattinson has never looked more irresistible or dangerous. Thurman, especially, is a revelation - literally finding a new quality to her voice as the influential and wealthy Madeleine Forestier. A hauntingly beautiful triumph of content over style, this is Dangerous Liaisons meets Cruel Intentions with extra added credibility.

Kazrob's Bel Ami review:
I went to see Bel Ami on Friday and was completely blown away. The sets and costumes are sumptuous as was the soaring, sweeping musical score. Thankfully there was none of the irritating music that was played at the start of each trailer!

All parts were played well by the supporting cast but the highest accolade has to go to Kristen Scott Thomas. Her depiction of a complete fan girl, overwhelming infatuated by Georges is a sight to behold. Her vulnerability and naivety is mind blowing. Every scene between her and Rob is amazing. Christina Ricci is also brilliant. Playing a fairly light hearted role for once, she plays the coquettish Clotilde with aplomb. You feel an amazing chemistry between her and Georges that could be interpreted as love, if only Georges were truly capable of it. Uma Thurman was also good as Madeleine Forestier. She captured her ambition well enough but her husky voice did grate on me a little, as did her flared nostrils!

Philip Glenister and Colm Meaney were outstanding. No other word for it.

My only criticism would be the lack of political intrigue in the story. Not much of this was explained and seemed a little rushed. As every scene contained Rob, I'm not complaining too loudly as he more than made up for the lack of storyline. To a non Rob supporter though, this might irk a little.

Now to come to Rob.....he was mesmerising. I really cannot believe this was made 2 years ago. He was sullen if he didn't get his own way....smug when he did. The smiles ....god the smiles.... they were Rob smiles when he was truly happy. He was lustful...he was ruthless.....he was enigmatic......he was arrogant.....

All of these emotions portrayed on a face so blindingly beautiful that sometimes no words needed to be spoken to understand how he felt.

There were also light-hearted moments in the film that made the audience laugh out loud. The comedic timing was excellent and even though Georges was a complete bastard, they made you fall in love with him too, despite his true nature.

The contrast between the two styles of Georges from the beginning of the story to the end is SO different. At the beginning you have him scruffy, unshaven with hair flopping on his forehead to a suave, sophisticated young buck in a tuxedo, high waisted trousers and cream bow tie with hair neatly swept back of his face. I must admit, when he was dressed up, Rob made me catch my breath, especially in the close-up shots. Either looking straight ahead with with an arrogant look or that sexy half smile he has perfected.
Kaz heads into the dark recesses after the cut!

Robert Pattinson talks to Film3Sixty (UK) about Bel Ami

Robert Pattinson talks to Film3Sixty (UK) about Bel Ami

Photobucket

From Film3Sixty magazine:
Best known for his portrayal of brooding teen vampire Edward Cullen in the phenomenally successful Twilight Saga films Robert Pattinson turns serial seducer in his new film Bel Ami. In this adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s classic tale he charms the likes of Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas. Some chaps have all the luck.

Film3Sixty: Your character in Bel Ami, Georges Duroy, is he an amoral man?
Robert Pattinson: He just doesn’t have a conscience. He’s content to do nothing and thinks everything should just be given to him. But if someone slights him, or directs any insult at him, the most overwhelming energy grabs him and he turns into this absolute devil. It’s like in Giant, when [James Dean] builds the entire empire to say ‘F– you’, he’s exactly like that but without any redeeming characteristics. The whole story is these people trying to beat him down into remorse, and just as he’s about to touch it, something good happens to him again.

You have a lot of attractive women to conquer in the film…
Yeah, there’s Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman and Kristin Scott Thomas. And I sleep with all of them!

It was an enjoyable film to shoot then?
The script is amazing. It’s very funny in a kind of strange way. I had to do four weeks of rehearsals, six days a week, like really full-on, including movement rehearsals, which I’ve never done before. That was kind of exhausting and doing fencing every day as well, which is absolutely impossible!

Did you choose the role because the character is so polarised from Edward Cullen in Twilight?
It’s always the script. I guess there’s something quite fun about Bel Ami, going from Edward to playing some guy who pretty much abuses women to get money out of them. Edward so wouldn’t approve – and I thought that was a funny irony. But the story, independently, is great, so I only thought about the irony afterwards.

How do you deal with fame?
I just try to keep working. I remember ten years ago Leonardo DiCaprio saying he liked to be able to take a break from everything, but I don’t think he can do that anymore. I think you both need to capitalize and steer your career at the same time, especially with a thing like Twilight, where it is literally such a huge thing that has blown up. It’s like a whole system, a whole universe.

Is it a burden to you, or does it open doors?
It opens doors and it closes others like anything does. You can say, oh if I was still unknown, then no one would judge me, but at the same time, nobody would give a shit either. It’s a weird little balance.

Bel Ami is in UK cinemas now.

Another review for Bel Ami: "Robert Pattinson is clever casting"

Another review for Bel Ami: "Robert Pattinson is clever casting"

Photobucket

This review gave the film 4 out of 5 stars! Excerpt from Film & Television (UK):
Robert Pattinson is clever casting. Here is his Twilight impassivity – weird, lucent-eyed, fixed of stare, sullenly magnetic – but Donnellan and Ormerod use it with sly craft. In early scenes this hero plays out ambition as if he has learnt it by rote; he seems to read even his love declarations from some invisible Autocue. Later he is all the more powerfully horrified and undone – we too, if identifying with him – when his ambitions start to play him.

The women hold the cards or seem to. Uma Thurman is the rich society wife coquettishly declaiming her unattainability, Kristin Scott Thomas the brittle matron with reserves of passion and spite, Christina Ricci the cultivated, hothouse “innocent”. Nearly everyone founders in the end, including the women. The social protocol unravels and this belle époque, unmasked, turns out to be a hag in make-up. That is the moral here: be true and truthful, or be prepared for the cataclysm. The directors give the story a barbed conviction and the female players, especially, act to the hilt.

Fantastic Review of Robert Pattinson's Bel Ami: Rob "exuding a scandalous charm"

Fantastic Review of Robert Pattinson's Bel Ami: Rob "exuding a scandalous charm"

Photobucket

LOVE this review from Film4 (UK). They gave the film 4 out of 5 stars!:
The term 'filthy rich' might be bandied about a lot, but in the nineteenth century it really meant something. The privileged classes were rotten with splendor and Guy de Maupassant's novel of sexual scandal and political corruption, Bel Ami, captured the various - err - comings and goings through the tale of a young man who uses sex as a weapon. It's fitting then that an adaptation has reared its head in a time when the eyes of the many are on the wealth of the few and it all seems relevant again, a century after the novel's publication. Directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod revel in bringing the decadence and debauchery to life and the film looks fantastic; muted pastel tones and elaborate, ornate sets bring fin-de-siecle Paris to life but it's the film's antihero star that really elevates the story above the usual bodice-ripping fare.

Robert Pattinson brings an air of menace to the character of Bel Ami, hungrily eyeing the women in his path and smearing Paris with his sleazy glances and threatening sexuality. He might be amoral and at times pretty loathsome but it's to Pattinson's credit that he keeps the smarm metered, exuding a scandalous charm that the ladies in his company swoon over. He's sort of like Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights, only hornier. Added to the mix are a triad of winsome belles played by Christina Ricci (a young romantic), Uma Thurman (a politically ambitious firebrand) and Kristin Scott Thomas (an insecure housewife). In particular Ricci looks the part with her coquettish eyes and porcelain skin but it's Scott Thomas who does an exemplary task of bringing the simpering naivety of Virginie to life. It is the way these four play together that ensures the film's dark nature unfolds in an engaging way, paying due reverence to Maupassant's source (although a slight tweak to its ending was a wise move).

But no matter how much the film seduces, it still smacks of directors who are holding back a little. Sex scenes are brief, fleeting and poorly edited despite an overall sensuality and there are moments of emotional tension that are prevented from lingering as long as they should. It's never enough to really tarnish the whole but, given the source, there's a little too much restraint. That said, the window into a society of sexually liberated (for their time) women and corrupt men, coupled with the playful way in which the directors tease out similarities with modern relationships all make for surprisingly good fun, despite the grim tone.

Verdict

A brooding tale of sex and scheming that is brought to life by its cast. More playful than you might expect, it's still a deliciously dark period piece that stays true to the tone of the novel.

From Yahoo (UK):
Social-climbing, villainous backstabbing and a rapacious Robert Pattinson combine in this slow but well-crafted study of a desperate man in desperate times.

The hype...

All eyes are on Robert Pattinson as he tries to break away from his 'Twilight' character Edward Cullen. He's had some success already, but the likes of 'Remember Me' and 'Water for Elephants' have hardly been classics. This is his darkest role to date, and it's sure to test his appeal, especially as most of his fans can't get into a 15-certificate film.

The story...
Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson) is a down-on-his-luck army veteran living an aimless life in 1890s Paris. A chance encounter with a man he served with in Algeria leads to a dinner at the home of the Forestiers, where beautiful socialite Mrs Forestier (Uma Thurman) advises Georges on the best way to climb the social ladder: it's not the men of the city he needs to get to know, it's their wives.

Soon Georges is enjoying romances with Clotide (Christina Ricci) and Madame Rousset (Kristin Scott Thomas), and his career as a newspaper columnist takes off. When Mr Forestier falls gravely ill, Georges is on hand to comfort the soon-to-be widow, and in turn lines himself up for another fortune.

As Georges becomes consumed by jealousy and greed, he sets his sights on a younger target. Will that be enough to satisfy his desires? And how many people will be left behind in his wake?

The breakdown...
The film begins at a meandering pace where only occasional flourishes by the actors light up a dull and dreary tone in the movie. Debut directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod fail to add any drama in the early scenes, but once it hits its stride and George begins his manoeuvring up the food chain things rapidly improve - even if it feels somewhat rushed.

R-Pattz, as we believe the kids call him, is on fine form in this mature story about a man keen on using his charm and good looks to further his career as a journalist. Not that we've ever been guilty of anything like that, obviously, but this does give the actor a chance to show a more identifiable side as opposed to his glittering vampire from the 'Twilight' series.

Previous attempts have been so-so, not really challenging the star to any great extent. Here, though, there is no place to hide and Pattinson excels. He oozes charm, and also succeeds in showing us a devious side without turning into a caricature cad.

Ricci and Thurman get rare occasions to show off opposite the leading man, and all that is left for Kristin Scott Thomas by the time she appears is the thankless task of an older woman who is desperately in love with a younger man. That said, she is wonderful in her portrayal, and makes Madame Rousset one of the only characters we actually cared about.

The film as a whole might feel lopsided, but thankfully the stellar performances keep you entertained. It's not quite the 'Twilight' bashing film that Pattinson needs to firmly establish himself away from that franchise, but a definite step in the right direction.

The verdict...
Things unfurl at a leisurely pace, but this does give us a chance to see Pattinson develop a distinctive character. His persona might be smug and dislikeable, but it does give credence to the acting ability of the star.

Rating: 3/5

Constructive, intelligent reviews that don't bitterly bash Rob. We've got 3! :)

From Red (UK):
Putting aside his role of brooding Twilight heartthrob Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson stars alongside a stellar cast in Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod’s Bel Ami.

Robert Pattinson plays Georges Duroy a 19th century soldier returning to Paris from the French army in Algeria. After bumping into Forestier (Philip Glenister), an old friend from Algeria, he is invited to his home for dinner where he meets the cream of Paris society including Forestier’s wife Madeleine (Uma Thurman).
Intent on bettering himself he uses his hits wit and charm to seduce Madeleine’s friends, the demure Madame Rousset (Kristin Scott Thomas) and the flirtatious Clotilde (Christina Ricci), to rise from poverty to wealth.

Manipulative and sexy, Bel Ami is the raunchy period drama that will make you re-think Robert Pattinson's acting abilities.
From Time Out (UK):
3 out 5 stars

Robert Pattinson steps into the shoes of antihero Georges Duroy for this lively if muddled adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s 1885 novel, directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, known for their theatre company Cheek By Jowl. Duroy is a likeable rogue in a world of scoundrels, an ex-soldier on his uppers in Paris who crosses the threshold of the chattering classes when he meets an old acquaintance,  journalist Charles Forestier (Philip Glenister), who introduces him to a web of high-class intrigue that stretches from the boardroom to the bedroom. It’s in the latter that Duroy excels, and he exercises his charms on Forestier’s wife Madeleine (Uma Thurman), and her two friends, fun-loving Clothilde (Christina Ricci) and older, vulnerable Madame Rousset (Kristin Scott Thomas), the wife of a powerful editor.

As a whirlwind of bonking and banquets, ‘Bel Ami’ is diverting and sometimes amusing, and Pattinson is adequate in the lead – pretty enough to convince as a womaniser but with enough of a hint of ambition and a moral vacuum behind the eyes. His scenes with Ricci have an attractive sense of abandon to them, but the other two women make little sense beyond superficial tics. There are serious themes afoot concerning backroom dealing in politics and media, but these are never brought out by Donnellan and Ormerod, who rush through the material with little time for thought and zero sense that anything is at stake. This ‘Bel Ami’ is spirited and sensible but little more than period fluff.
My Bel Ami review :) *spoilers*

LOVED it.

I'd read a few bad reviews and honestly was feeling apprehensive, but was pleasantly surprised as how good it was.

Robs acting is very good. He plays Georges very well. And he is in almost every scene.

Obviously this was filmed 2 years ago and i've noticed in the Twilight films that his acting has slowly improved. (So Cosmopolis should be brilliant!)

There are a few scenes with the lead actresses where their acting careers show, but Rob is getting better and better.

Rob is not always going to be 'gorgeous Rob' in every film and I was glad that there were some scenes where Georges is tired, desperate and battered. This helps to highlight Robs acting and not just his looks. (Tink: I love this note because I imagine Duroy battered and tired looking. A villain that is physically deteriorating and looks haggard from his evil doing. Not the pretty man we're used to.)

I loved every scene that Christina Ricci was in.

The sex scenes..well the scenes are very short and to be honest, although they convey Georges character and are important plot points, they're not pivotal scenes. They're snapshots. The longest scene, with Uma, is not sexy at all and is actually uncomfortable to watch. The scenes with Christina showing the passage of time is really well done.

The scene when Georges sits down at the table with all 3 of his conquests is hilarious. The smirk on his face is just perfect.

The directors of Bel Ami are theatre directors, and it shows, in a good way. Instead of feeling immersed in the story, you feel like you are merely an observer. This works really well for the context of the book/story.

I haven't read the book in a while so I can't compare the book to the film in exact detail, but the film definitely conveys the time period and Georges character brilliantly. The interwoven deceit of 'everyone out for themselves' mentality is spot on.

Well done to everyone involved in the making of Bel Ami !

P.S. Rob playing 'ball and cup' = <3

The fragrant Robert Pattinson plays the cynical accidental journalist whose adventures drive the plot of Bel Ami. They must have had some interesting conversations about the pressures that early success can bring. There are few idols more hotly pursued than the star of the Twilight films.

“He’s wonderful,” she says. “He’s handling everything very well. He never brought any of what he was going through to the set. He was always incredibly well prepared, very professional and a very great actor. I loved working with him. We joked a lot. Made fun of each other and had a great laugh.”

Did she have advice for him? “Not really. He seems to be handling it all very well. I can’t imagine being as famous as he is.”

Fan pictures and encounter with Robert Pattinson at Berlinale + fan review of Bel Ami

Here's another fan experience at Berlinale to sink your teeth into. Reader Estelle, provided us with plenty of details from her trip as well as pictures.

BlurryRob is still SexyRob.

The blurry pictures have meaning with Estelle's story and honestly, I think they're the most reflective of what it's like to be in Rob's presence. It's too intense! I was trembling outside of the BD Kimmel taping (I know, Kate. I still need to share my BD pics, vid, etc. Please don't break out the flogger). How blessed is Rob's fandom that he takes the picture for so many of his fans? That is so considerate since it's physically altering to meet him.

All the Berlinale details + MORE pics of Rob (special clear ones) after the cut!
