GREAT interview with The Playlist while Rob is promoting The Lighthouse.

An excerpt:
I moderated a Q&A last night with Robert and Max [Eggers] and Robert kept saying that if he didn’t think you were wet enough he would take the hose and spray it on you.
I mean, even if I was the most patient person and this was my job, if my director kept doing that, it might annoy me a bit. I mean, it’s kind of fun. It’s like anything which is these extreme things to react to it allows for [a] more extreme performance and Roberts one of the only people I’ve ever worked with who never says… I’ve never done a movie like this where you were never told to tone it down, ever. It provokes a really kind of primal instinct in you when you’ve got a fire hose in your face and you’re kind of like, I don’t know, you really rage against it. It’s kind of fun.

Outside of “Good Time,” I think this is, for lack of a better word, the most “passionate” character you’ve had? It’s the most angry that I’ve seen you on screen ever, maybe? At least for more than one scene. When I asked Robert about that, he thought it was because no one has offered you a role like this before. Do you agree with him? Or do you feel like you found something in this film?
I mean it is a quite unusual role. There’s a couple of speeches at the end when there are two kind of key moments when the character is so drunk he can’t distinguish whether he is himself or the person that he’s talking to. I was like, “O.K., so that’s the level of drunk and it’s pretty high.” And then a few of the last scenes when he’s just really, really losing his mind and they were just so funny and sort of wild and you just knew that you could feel how much you needed to rev yourself up for it and I don’t know. I guess, yeah, I guess it’s just the part really. I mean there’s very few scenes where people, yeah, where people do like rage for a sustained period of time. But I think it’s one of the most fun things to play. I’ve always been sort of on the lookout for it, but it’s actually quite rare to find.

This movie is definitely rare, in many ways, but it’s exciting how well it’s doing at the box office. I don’t know if you’ve seen, but the numbers for the expansion are fantastic. Does that give you hope that in this era of blockbusters, these sorts of movies will keep getting made?
I think it’s incredible. I mean, I’ve done some weird movies. [Laughs.] And this is definitely [a] pretty weird movie and to see that there’s a hunger for it. And I mean it’s pretty, it’s great. And hopefully, it’s a harbinger of where things are going to go in the movie industry. I just always look at movies that are coming out. Like I was talking about this with [producer] David Crane about movies and things like “Existenz” and stuff like that. They could be an art-house movie that was also mainstream and that will be wonderful for me because that’s exactly the type of movies I want to make. But yeah, seeing people go to it and be excited about it? It’s sort of a strange kind of event movie, like a certain uber of people.

First up, an excerpt from the NY Times: What Can Robert Pattinson Do to Keep You Guessing?
image host image host image host image host image host
After “Twilight,” the actor reinvented himself in art-house films. How will he follow “The Lighthouse” and his wildest role so far? With yet another swerve: He’s playing Batman.
Is it fair to say you’re drawn to eccentric characters?
I’ve always thought that the only reason you’d want to play a good guy all the time is because you’re desperately ashamed of what you’re doing in real life, whereas if you’re a pretty normal person, the most fun part of doing movies is that you can explore the more grotesque or naughty sides of your psyche in a somewhat safe environment. And it’s always more fun if you’re shocking the people in the room. If you end up being boring, that’s the lowest of the low.

Do you think you’ve been boring before?
All the time. You can bore yourself! On “The Lighthouse,” I’d do two out of 17 takes that work, and on the other ones, I’d roll the dice in a different direction that leads me nowhere. But it’s more fun doing that than making a plan and sticking to it.

What was the first day of shooting “The Lighthouse” like?
Well, my first shot was this ferocious masturbation scene. It’s always nice to do something massive for your opening shot, and I went really massive on the first take. It was a 180 from everything we’d done in rehearsal, and I could see Robert [Eggers] a little in shock afterward. But I was like, “O.K., cool, I didn’t get told to stop, so I’ll keep going in that direction.” As soon as I’d done that, it was like the road started getting paved.

Now, an excerpt from SF Chronical's Datebook interview: Robert Pattinson recalls Stonestown mall riot and getting weird in ‘Lighthouse’

Q: I was worried you were going to lose more than a button seeing your physically demanding performance in “The Lighthouse.” How did you get to a place where you could portray that type of isolation and insanity?

A: The script was so kind of audacious, there were moments with things in it I’d never seen anything like it in any other script. You realize you had to take a kind of running jump to kind of even reach any of it. I’m attracted to scripts where you first read it, it’s very engaging and you feel, “Wow, this has got some kind of totemic qualities, something really primal and powerful about it.” And it’s also working with Willem, I’ve seen the amount of energy that Willem can bring to a performance, so I kind of knew that it was going to be an adversarial type of relationship.

Q: Did you and Willem do any kind of exercises to get to a place where you were comfortable enough to do some of these very physically intimate scenes?

A: We rehearsed for a week, Willem loves rehearsing and I really dislike it, which is kind of handy for our relationship. We did five days of rehearsing and I just found it to be the most incredibly stressful thing in the world. By the time we were shooting with each other, there was already this weird tension, it’s the opposite of what’s supposed to happen from rehearsals, normally it’s supposed to get people relaxed with each other. I love Willem, he’s such a lovely personable guy but there was this strange energy.
