"He’s Really Charismatic" ~ Brady Corbet Talks Robert Pattinson To Variety

"He’s Really Charismatic" ~ Brady Corbet Talks Robert Pattinson To Variety

Brady Corbet, Director of The Childhood of A Leader, did a Q&A with Variety where he spoke about the movie and how Robert Pattinson got involved.
Check out the excerpt where he mentions Rob below.

 photo photo.jpg
Loosely inspired by the early childhood experiences of many of the most infamous dictators of the 20th century, “The Childhood of a Leader” stars Berenice Bejo and Liam Cunningham as an American couple settling into the French countryside at the end of the World War I, at which time the father is involved in the delicate peace negotiations surrounding the Treaty of Versailles. His wife is a devout Christian who struggles with the tantrums of their son (Tom Sweet), an angelic-looking boy whose behaviour becomes increasingly disturbing. Robert Pattinson and Stacy Martin also appear in the film, which also brought Corbet a cash prize in the form of Luigi De Laurentiis award for best debut.

Variety: How did Robert Pattinson get involved?

Corbet: Robert Pattinson is a friend of ours, and we really have a lot of common interests and tastes. He’s really charismatic, and we thought it would be wonderful to apply that charisma to these very early, seemingly unimportant sequences, and only really by the end of the film do you realise how significant they are.

Read the Full Q&A over at Variety

Also if you happen to live in or near Pleasantville, New York there will be a screening of The Childhood of a Leader followed by a Q&A with Brady Corbet this Sunday (25th Oct) at the Jacob Burns Film Center. More details and links to purchase tickets can be found HERE

This Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold interview with Writers Guild Italia  where they say great things about Robert Pattinson contains a slight THE Childhood of A Leader Spoiler so I've placed the spoiler after the cut.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

And with an actor as Robert Pattinson? I know he really looks forward films that are auteur films, that offer something else out of the mainstream.

Brady: Yes for sure, he is a real cinephile. There is so many actors that could use their celebrity in a really amazing way, like Will Smith or Tom Cruise… Well Tom Cruise does that sometimes. There’s a lot of people who really don’t take advantages… Like I can get somebody’s film made and they are gonna challenge me and we are gonna grow together.

Did he help in financing?
Brady: Of course. The thing is funny because at the time… he was cast several years ago, we had no idea how significant it would end up being. We had a lot of others fancy cast members at one point, but at a certain point he was the only way to get the film made, after many years was to have Rob involved. And we originally hired Rob because of the fact we wanted somebody really charismatic and really recognisable.
Mona: We wanted to feel right the way that this character is very important.

Brady: The thing great about Robert is that the less he does. You can't take your eyes off the guy! Because he is beautiful to look at, It's really like he draws you in, in a classic cold way. He is compelling.

'The Childhood Of A Leader' With Robert Pattinson Wins Best Debut Film At The Venice Film Festival

'The Childhood Of A Leader' With Robert Pattinson Wins Best Debut Film At The Venice Film Festival

Fantastic news from Venice, The Childhood of A Leader won the "Luigi de Laurentiis" Venice Award for Best Debut Film. Not only that but Brady Corbet also took home the Best Director Horizons award!

 photo tcoalstill.jpg
From The Hollywood Reporter:
Childhood of a Leader won the "Luigi de Laurentiis" Venice Award for a Debut Film on Saturday. Director Brady Corbet also won the Best Director Horizons award, presented by Jonathan Demme.

"I really love you Jonathan Demme. I always have," he told the Horizons jury president.

Robert Pattinson and Stacy Martin star in the historical drama, which details the childhood of a fascist leader during World War I.

Director-writer Brady Corbet flew in from upstate New York the day before to receive his prize. He was shocked to receive the prize, saying that he remembered questioning his family's future when they were trying to put the film together, wary of whether or not it would turn out.

"My daughter might look at this in 25 years. I just want to say be patient, be radical, be free," said Corbet on accepting the prize.

The film was the only film In Venice shown on 35mm. "Celluloid should be a filmmaker's right, not a privilege," said Corbet upon receiving his second prize of the night.

Roundup of the critics reviews for The Childhood of a Leader with Robert Pattinson

UPDATED With NEW Reviews
Robert Pattinson's latest role to be released 'The Childhood of a Leader' had it's first screening at the Venice Film Festival a few hours ago and the first of the critical reviews are here:

image host

Cine Vue

"The Childhood of a Leader is a dark, enigmatic piece of work that hovers between visionary greatness and petty domestic triviality. Corbet's inaugural stint behind the camera marks a stunning debut and the finest film at Venice thus far."

"a US diplomat assisting the President, is drinking with Charles (Robert Pattinson), a journalist whose wife has recently died"

The Film Stage

"What could very easily be received as an irritating, pretentious feature debut is actually a display of controlled madness full of astute touches, like the use of Robert Pattinson’s persona in the few scenes he’s in. Let’s just hope the devoted fanbase he’s been leading into uncharted territory in the last few years will make it to the end of this one."

Screen Daily

"Corbet’s assured direction of an excellent cast, it makes for an edgy, poetic mix with the dramatic potency of a good nightmare"

"Perhaps Robert Pattinson’s four brief appearances in the film will trick a few teenage girls into buying a ticket; if so, they’d better be prepared for an uncompromisingly grown-up, intelligent, allusive cineaste experience."

Eye for Film

"indeed it may seem like unfeasibly high praise but there are echoes of the masters (Luchino Visconti, notably) in Lol Crawley’s superb 35mm cinematography."

Cine Cola

"the film fundamentally depends on the performances by the excellent European cast, that delivers solid turns. THE CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER also includes a cameo by ROBERT PATTINSON, who only appears for little under fifteen minutes of the film overall, but does so with great credibility."

We'll update as more reviews are published!
