Should Robert Pattinson Worry About Bad Reviews?

Critics remain way underwhelmed by Robert Pattinson's channeling of artist Salvador Dalí in Little Ashes. Call it a lack of—tee hee—sparkle. A few were impressed—the London Daily Express calls Pattinson's take "a spirited performance." But most agree with MTV's Kurt Loder, who says, "As soon as Pattinson steps forth with Dalí's famous up-twirled mustaches pasted to his face, the picture collapses."
Well, meow to you, too.

That isn't necessarily bad news for Pattinson fans, however, especially if you're open to a long-term love affair...

Despite the mixed reviews, veteran casting directors are calling Pattinson's choice in films brilliant, especially if he wants a long career.

"Tween girls buy movie tickets but don't win you Oscars," says casting exec Lisa Hamil, who worked on The Notebook and Alpha Dog as well as the new film One-Eyed Monster. "Hollywood is very quick to typecast, and once that happens, an actor's career can flatline."
Here's where tweenie fans may feel a bit of panic.

"All of us would still attempt to cast him in tween roles, but I'd be shocked (and a little disappointed) if he took another one," Hamil reveals. "It's the same reason Daniel Radcliffe did Equus. These guys are in it for the long haul and have learned this elemental truth: You grow up with your audience."

In other words, once the Twilight franchise wraps, kids, don't look for Pattinson in another teen-candy role. Even vampires need to grow up sometime.

  1. You bet we are open for a "long term love affair". I think (and hope big time) for many more movies with Rob. I look forward to watching him develop as an actor and hope to enjoy some more Rob music at some point.

Mixed reviews on an artsy movie like LA don't derail a career. It's still early. I am glad that he is willing to take on challenging roles like Dali and dedicates himself to doing the best he can. His performances will only get better.

  2. I agree, we are in it for the long haul. Every film he makes might not be Oscar winners, but the bravery in taking such a complex role from such a young actor says so much about his potential.

  3. Please, everyone, read Roger Ebert's review, he's the most respected film critic in the US (and has won a Pulitzer Prize for his work as a critic). Roger has been reviewing films for 40 years for the Chicago Sun-Times. He gave "Little Ashes" three stars and said he admired Rob for taking on such a challenging role. You can find it at RogerEbert.com

If you ever notice ads for quality films, they ALWAYS quote Roger when he gives a good review! And I wouldn't be surprised to see Roger quoted on "Little Ashes" ads soon.

  4. Chicago - I read Ebert's review and 3 stars is good. You are right he said he admired Rob for the challenge. I am glad that someone as repsected as Ebert had some encouraging words for Rob.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Chicago- I hope Rob reads Roger's review and keep it in the back of his mind for encouragement. And block out the haters. Roger is well respected and I only look at his reviews. In the end I still go and see what I deem interesting.

  6. I'm a former critic for the Associated Press and I say "Little Ashes" is a fine film, well worth seeing. ***Three Stars

DH and I saw the first showing today in Pasadena at 10:50 a.m. Even though I bought tickets online, we had a bit of a surprise at the theater...staffers opened the building late (ten minutes before film start time) and we were only two of maybe 10 people in the audience of a fair-sized auditorium. Still, two noisy Twilighters sat directly behind us. :(

I won't bore with repetition other than to say I totally concur with Roger Ebert's review. I cannot imagine where a bad review would come from...perhaps ignorance? Homophobia? Lack of knowledge about Dali and/or Lorca? Misunderstanding of Spanish history?

"Little Ashes" is a film for those who understand how to think and how to feel. Rob was quite good as Dali with no false notes. The Dali/Lorca relationship was completely believeable. Cinematography was enchanting; lush colors. Javier Beltran (his first onscreen role) as Lorca had great screen presence.

I enjoy art, period pieces, history of countries other than the US and don't require movies I enjoy to be fast-paced. I liked "Little Ashes" very much. I would've seen it even if Rob hadn't been in it.

That said, I'm really proud of him. Rob is an artist.

DH's take: he thought Rob did a good job and liked "Little Ashes" much, much more than "How to Be." His only regret was that there wasn't enough story about how Dali came to be *DALI* during his time in France.

ROB "Little Ashes" GOSSIP: still loving the right side back of the head mole near the hairline. Also, noticed that Rob has a 1" scar under his chin. In the beginning of the film I noticed a bit of real Rob (he did a couple of Rob-style hair-raking bits with his hand) though he didn't slip with later scenes.

I think the prognosis for Rob's career is NO LIMITS!

  7. I barely saw any teens, or tweens whatever the f**k they want to call young people, at the theater last night and it was packed. I'm really pissed off his fans are being categorized as such. Rob is a universal talent. His fans range from young girls to older men. There were a lot of men last night at that theater. I really like that his fan base isn't just women. =)

I personally loved his portrayal of Dali and the film in general. Not sure why it's getting such mediocre reviews. If I must say something critical about the movie it would be that the time line became distorted. I didn't know how much time had elapsed. Dali told Lorca he was leaving to Paris. Next thing you know you're are seeing Lorca's black and white day dream of Dali smoking and drinking with a bunch of naked whores. Then it was like 8 years later, or some shizz. It was kinda confusing for me and my mom. But whatever. It's still my favorite Rob work yet. Maybe not Oscar caliber like I had stated previously.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hey Divine~

DH thought (and I agree) that they should've spent more time on that eight year break. But I think the film was just focusing on the Dali/Lorca relationship, not Dali.

  9. ****WARNING MY COMMENTS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS, READ AT YOUR OWN DISGRESSION****

Chi girl, do we like share a brain or something? I felt like I was reading something I typed. But instead of DH it was my mom. hehe. I like "artsy fartsy" films, as my DH would say. LA made me feel all sorts of emotion. the colors and lighting were beautiful. And OMFG when Rob is riding the bike and when he's rowing the boat....JIZZZZ.

I agree they should have added scenes with what caused his transition in Paris. Why he became superficial, materialistic, and so extroverted. Such a departure from who he was in the beginning. It would have flowed better with the story.

ANd OMG OMG OMG you noticed the hairline mole on his right side toooooo?????!!!!!! it's so cute!

And that poor girl carrying the easel, hahahahaha, that scene was freaky and disturbing. He went completely mad! The best thing was that he was shirtless. He really has an amazing body. He looked so toned in that scene it actually caught me off guard. again, very jizz worthy. Kudos to Rob for creeping me out and giving me a unicorn at the same time. He can do that any second of the day. Job well done.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Rob has NOTHING to worry about.

He should be VERY proud of his portrayal of young Dali.

    xxx

    Well done Rob.

I hope he continues to take risks like this role and challenge himself.

    NO Limits

    ReplyDelete
  11. I really don't know why it's getting mediocre reviews either. I don't think it's the best movie ever made, but I found it to be a very enjoyable movie. It held my attention from beginning to end (well, maybe that had a little to do with seeing Rob on screen :-} ).

Like DS, I wasn't sure of the time line either. Someone asked me how many years it spanned and I answered by saying maybe 9, definitely not less than 8 years.

Chicago Girl; I noticed his scar too. And the mole on his hairline. I thought he looked really good as Dali.

    ReplyDelete
  12. *I'm trying to say as little as possible as to not spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet*

DS: I too liked that the scene where the girl is carrying the easel. It was very freaking and disturbing and Rob looked GOOD!!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I didn't LOVE the film..

but I think Rob's performance was excellent (especially portraying young Dali)

I also thought it was visually stunning. Beautifully filmed.

My problems with the film was continuity and flow. Also, if you knew nothing of these artists or the political times...you might find yourself a bit lost.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Meh...I NEVER listen to reviews. I like to pass my own judgement.

    :-)

    Hi Suz! :P

    ReplyDelete
  15. I admit I'm bummed about the reviews, but ... I think everyone needs to remember a few things.

First, Rob was very early in his acting career when he made this movie, without a lot of experience. It was a gutsy choice and will help set the tone for a serious career.

Second, the majority of critics, whether they want to admit it or not, see him as a teen heartthrob, and I'd be willing to be their opinion of Twilight and his (badly directed, IMO) portrayal of Edward is most likely coloring their vision. I highly doubt they are looking objectively at this role.

That being said, I take the reviews of other fans A LOT more then critics, especially with this movie, because the vast majority of people going to see this movie aren't going to be teenies - they know what they're in for, and I think that age group will be A LOT more objective, and not just think Rob did a great job because they love Rob. I have seen a ton of great reviews from fans like that, and to me, they speak volumes. Not to mention that before Twilight hysteria went crazy last fall, this film and Rob were getting great reviews when it first went out on the indie circuit.

So, after my long winded explanation, no, I don't think he should worry about negative reviews in this ... even if they're disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree Bootstraps.

Suz my mom didn't know about Dali and Lorca at all and she still liked it more than HTB. Even though she was confused about the time line, history and politics. She said she noticed Rob's package was bigger than Javier's. LMAO. She just couldn't help herself.

Performance wise, I still say it's Rob's best work yet. Such a range of emotions. My goodness.

I concur Melissa, I make my own reviews. thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Stacy, ditto. LOL

I see we are all on the same page for the most part. good to know, good to know. well gotta go now. See y'all on the flip side. I'M OUT!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Chicago Girl---- I think you and I were in the same theater! The Playhouse? (no, I wasn't one of the giggling girls)

I meant to write up a review earlier and I got sidetracked by my own juvenile behavior on another thread.

I will write up my thoughts either late tonight or tomorrow.. I am heading out to a friend's birthday and I came back in here after getting ready, but I ought to go.

    before I do...

    - DROOL over the mole, always.

    - also noticed the scar on his chin!

    - the captions tell you that 8 years have passed at the beginning of the scene where Lorca is giving his speech at the cafe and Buñel walks in.

    hi and bye ladies!
    xo

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with the confusing timeline. One minute he goes off to Paris and then next thing you know he is back with a mustache. I also found that the flashbacks aboutthe political environment confusing and kind of distrupted the flow of the cinematography.

Did any else find Lorca's vision of Dali with showgirls comical? I thought Rob was hilarious in that scene. Not sure if that's what he inteded, but it was very adorable.

I also read Ebert's review and after reading it I felt better. His opinion counts a lot more that Kurt Loder's.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Spoiler:
I have one other comment. I loved the scene when he took off his shirt on the boat. He has an amazing chest.

    ReplyDelete
  21. A/LA~
Were you at the same showing? Dang, I wanted to stand up and ask for any Robsessors, but the "crowd" was so small and with DH there?!?!

Win~Yes, that's what I thought: Roger's opinion means so much more than Loder's. Maybe Goz or Dani can post Roger's review.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I really enjoyed the film. Rob did a great job! If his early work is this good, i can imagine future performances will be amazing.

    Good Job Rob!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh yeah, WinWin...he has a beautiful body. (sighs)
all the more in love now....... :/

    ReplyDelete
  24. Win (spoiler alert) I loved the "playing his own trumpet" scene...

    Total WIN!

    ; )

P.S. If Kurt (i'm irrelevant) Loder thought this was a "possible" masturbation scene... he really is a major toss bag.

IT WAS MOST DEFINITELY A MASTURBATION SCENE -- No doubt about it..

(Hey, Kurt.. did you, ah, actually see the film??)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks to all of you who are reviewing this movie. For those of us like me who can't see it (it'll never show in the West Indies, I can guarantee) your reviews are the next best thing. I'm confident that the ladies here will give balanced, objective, if sympathetic, reviews and so I would take them much more seriously than those by the professionals who seem to delight in making snide remarks that just reek of envy. Roger Eberts's was heartening to read after some of the others.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes, thank you all for reviewing it. I'm in Iowa, and I can't get to DM to see it.

I am hoping that perhaps ... PLEASE don't yell at me ... there may soon be a decent copy online I could ... view. I hate to do that, I would gladly pay money to see it, but it's not close enough.

  27. I haven't seen this yet, but I think that it looks beautiful.

Hopefully, they'll show it at a local theater...I have my doubts, though. :(

And the women's fashions.. OH MY!

  107. WinWin~ Aw...I wish it were mine...

It's actually a song that I've been listening to, pretty much non-stop.

I would send the youtube link, but the video is kind of distracting. I see the song as being more sexy than anything, but the video is more...artsy. And has subtitles.

  111. No Ellie, my laptop is still dead. I'm going to have to wait until I get home to have my uncle get everything off of the hard drive before I restore my computer to its out of the box state. My mom sent me her laptop and it got here on Tuesday but I've been really busy with school stuff so I haven't had time to catch up.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Ellie; I feel like I live on this site... lol.

    Good evening lovely ladies.

  117. I have to say that I keep reading and confusing myself when you guys mention Ellie.

That's my name too! Well, Ellen. But I prefer Ellie.

    Neat-o.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Suz, I'm guessing I know which is the "money shot"! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  119. Alie, the buddy system when Robsessing should be mandatory!

    ; )

    ReplyDelete
  120. suz- I've already formed such a strong opinion from viewing the trailers. I have high hopes for the rest of the film. There seems to be so much emotion. I can't wait to see and feel it in it's entirety...

    ReplyDelete
  121. bolideinthesky - I just watched the YouTube video.

There is a Feringi in it.
What-the-borg? Anybody see Star Trek yet?

Ellie~ There aren't enough of us Ellies. I've only, personally, known of one or two others my entire life.

    Yayy.

    ReplyDelete
  135. True that, Ellie. They'd also need to send in a firetruck or two to put out all of the combusting panties. Although hot firefighters might make it worse (in a good way).

    ReplyDelete
  136. TH~ That's my mom's birthday! The 20th.

I'm in PA and I don't think that any theaters are screening LA here.
