You mention the performers experimenting in the dailies. I think it would be fair to call you an actor's director -- the films you've directed have gotten stars Oscar nominations five times, and Jennifer Hudson won -- but Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner grew up on these movies; they're maybe set in their ways and what they think the characters are. How do you come in and direct them for this last run?
I did not find any of them set in their ways. It felt like they were eager to explore. Part of the advantage I had was that after a lot of anticipation in three movies, now a huge number of things happen. These characters change so dramatically. When you think of where Bella stars, which is where she's been for all three movies, and by the end she's this fierce warrior-hunter-maternal-goddess. All the steps that get her there -- it's a huge amount of change. The same for Jacob and Edward. They grow up more than anything.

Catherine Hardwicke [who directed 'Twilight'] has a genius for getting inside the brain and is so in touch with what it's like to be a teenage girl. I couldn't imagine doing that first 'Twilight.' But I can imagine doing this one because it's more adult concerns happening in this story.

Was there any actor who surprised you?

I think people will be surprised by everybody. In general, Kristen has such a huge journey to take and to watch her become this fierce, protective, powerful mother figure? I think that will surprise people. Taylor surprised me with his commitment and the dark places he goes to in this movie. And Rob, I think there is some sense that he has relaxed into this part and finally willing to show more of himself. His own charm, wit and grace are in evidence in this movie. It surprised me in how relaxed he seemed in something he's fought a little against before. (Tink: *happy tear down the face*)

I think you know this, I was on the set of 'New Moon' when they shot those first scenes with Michael Sheen and the Volturi and it seemed at the time that it was the funniest thing to him. To be playing this character. Is he just having a ball when you work with him?

Yes, he is. That whole group. It's interesting, because you spend chunks of time with just Rob, Kristen and Taylor and then the Cullens. And there is a moment when it's Volturi time and it just brought a completely different vibe. It's British camp at its best. I don't mean camp in a bad way, I mean just people who are having a blast and being very clever all the time.

[Musically] is there a theme that's repetitive through the movie?

If I say there are three, I probably mean five. There is a Renesme theme that really comes to fruition to movie two that is quite prominent in movie one. There is a Bella/Edward love them that plays a lot throughout the first half of the movie. There is Jacob's theme and there is a theme that suggests the love of everyone around Bella at the wedding, especially her parents and that's really lovely. I probably am missing one, but those are the big themes.

Where does Robert Pattinson begin and Edward Cullen end? At this point in the young "Twilight" thesp’s career it’s tough to separate the heartthrob actor from the heartthrob bloodsucker, but he’s currently making his second attempt at changing all that – after one false start with the disappointing "Remember Me" - with "Water for Elephants", the upcoming adaptation of Sara Gruen’s bestselling historical novel. In the film, Pattinson plays Jacob Jankowski, a circus veterinarian who gets involved in a messy love triangle with equestrian beauty Marlena (Reese Witherspoon) and her ruthless animal-trainer husband August ("Inglourious Basterds’" charming Christoph Waltz).

Given the talent pedigree of the film, which was directed by "I Am Legend" helmer Francis Lawrence, it would seem a smart choice for Pattinson to take on the more “adult” role opposite Witherspoon and Waltz, though the actor certainly wasn’t about to admit to that kind of career calculation to a room full of image-burnishing journalists (he needs to stay “relatable”, after all). He’d rather have us believe he accepted the part merely for the opportunity to work with “Ty” (in the film she’s named ”Rosie”), the trained elephant who in the film is purchased by August to help boost his traveling show’s anemic ticket sales.

“I basically decided to do the movie at that point”, said the elegantly-rumpled Pattinson of first meeting the pachyderm, who’d earlier been on display outside the swanky Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica where the press conference was being held. “I hadn’t read the script or anything!”

Luckily he wasn’t on the panel for Pattinson to unintentionally offend screenwriter Richard LaGravenese – only Lawrence, Waltz, and Witherspoon, the latter speaking in that slight Tennessee drawl as she described her own first encounter with the enormous animal.

“Francis and I went out and visited Ty probably three months before shooting, or four months before shooting, and [he] brought a camera. [Laughs] And I was like, ‘why [is he bringing] a camera?’ And then he took pictures of me, every moment, the first experiences I had of meeting her”, the actress recounted. “Then he sent me the pictures, and I was like ‘oh my gosh!’…I looked terrified, basically.”

“You were?” Pattinson asked her, seemingly dumbfounded.

“Oh, the first time I was terrified, yeah”, she answered. “I screamed!”

“That’s strange”, he replied blankly, as if being nervous around an animal capable of crushing a human being in a matter of seconds somehow defied all reason.

Or maybe he was just sticking up for his lady. After all, rumors had started circulating that Pattinson and his 9,000 pound costar developed something of a special love connection during filming.

“This is really strange, I don’t know who started this thing”, remarked the actor, as if he’d just ridden a time machine back to 2009 and was once again addressing rumors about dating Kristen Stewart. “I’ve been asked about it all day. It sounds really disturbing! Like [I’ve] been flirting with the elephant. I don’t know…I think I had a relationship with the elephant, [but] it was kind of based purely on candy. I strategically placed mints, like, [I] suck[ed] on a peppermint for a bit and then stick it onto [my] body, like into my armpits…and [I didn’t] tell anyone. So every single time the elephant would be constantly sniffing me, and I’d be like, ‘I don’t know, she just really likes me, it’s crazy!’ [Laughs.] But yeah, I think she was just sniffing around for a treat.”

The possibility of that intriguing inter-species courtship effectively quashed ("Breaking: Robert Pattinson not cheating on Kristen Stewart with an elephant!”), Pattinson and Witherspoon – who, interestingly, shared a brief scene in 2004’s Vanity Fair that ended up on the cutting room floor – later went on to discuss how they managed to immerse themselves in the Depression-era world of their romantically-linked characters. Astonishingly, it turns out there are these other people that work on movies, who are apparently known as “the crew”. I guess sometimes they help the actors out with that “getting into character” sorta stuff.

“There was a kind of comprehensive creation of the world”, said Pattinson of playing his character, a college student who loses everything when his parents are killed in a tragic car crash and end up leaving a mountain of debt behind. “There was an embankment with a train track on the top, and all the trailers were on one side, and then there was the circus world on the other. And once you walked over the tracks, there'd be a camera pretty much, that was the only thing from the 21st century. You could stand on the tracks and look over everything and [you feel like] you’re in the ‘30s.

“Jack Fisk, the production designer, he was using authentic pegs and stuff -- very single thing, the ropes, everything, which built the world, it was all totally real”, he continued. “Authentic period underpants do actually help, as well. I actually wore them every single day. I mean, Jacqueline West, the costume [designer], it’s unbelievable, some of this stuff. Almost everything was real. I mean, every pair of jeans, it was all from the ‘20s and ‘30s. It was crazy.”

Emilie De Ravin Tells Hitfix about Her Screen Test For "Remember Me" With Robert Pattinson

Emilie de Ravin's role as Claire in the TV series "Lost" has lately caused fans to scratch their heads, but her turn starring opposite of Robert Pattinson in "Remember Me" has heads turning.

Namely, the pair share intensely intimate moments on the big screen, from their bold first kiss, to a (clothed) romp in the shower and beyond. When it came time to the film such physical chemistry, however, there were no moments or opportunities for Pattinson and de Ravin to "rehearse": they just headed right in.

"When we [screen] tested together, there was no scenes involving kissing and obviously we didn’t test with a sex scene," de Ravin laughed in her interview with HitFix. She mocked just how awkward such an audition process would become. “'We want to see another scene, so take off your clothes. We just want to see the chemistry, trust us, it’s O.K.'"

Robert Pattinson on 'New Moon' and the harsh, faster-paced 'Eclipse'

When this writer first met Robert Pattinson, he was a relatively obscure British actor who'd received a tiny bit of notoriety from appearing in a "Harry Potter" flick. It was April, 2008 and as we talked on the set of this tiny flick titled "Twilight" during a night shoot in the middle of a small Oregon town, he considered a scenario where he might not continue acting. Perhaps he'd focus on the music side of career, perhaps not. Needless to say, what a difference a year and a half makes.

Arguably up there with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as one of the most popular celebrities in the world, it's no understatement to say the "Twilight" franchise has completely changed Pattinson's life forever. We spoke again during the "New Moon" press day on Saturday and while it wasn't the 45 minutes I'd been granted when he was "up and coming" not that long ago, it was clear that Pattinson was still as polite, genial and honest as he was back then.

The 23-year-old joked about how he may just keep working as much as possible because the seclusion of shooting allows him a somewhat "normal life" and went in depth about the differences between working with his "Twilight," "New Moon" and "Eclipse" directors. He also made some particularly intriguing comments about the last "Twilight" installment in particular.
