ShockHound.com Talks music w/ Rob

SHOCKHOUND: Who is one of your favorite bands?

ROBERT PATTINSON: On set, I turned everyone onto Van Morrison. They all recently went to see him, pretending that they knew about him before me. I said, "You don't know what you're talking about!" I was going to the show already, and they were like, "We're all going as well." Copycats! [Laughs]

KRISTEN STEWART: The Beatles are a band I've grown up with, grown out of and grown back into a million times. It'd be weird to say anything besides the Beatles. However, we all became entirely obsessed with Van Morrison on this film. Rob [Pattinson] will take credit for that, and he'll resent all of us for taking that from him. [Laughs] However, we were obsessed — really obsessed. We saw [his live performance of] Astral Weeks at the Hollywood Bowl, and it was baffling. It was truly amazing. Van Morrison screams sometimes, and the way he emits is hard to describe. I liken it to when I find a script that I like. I can't describe what I like about it. It says something to me. It stirs me up, and that's what this music does.

SHOCKHOUND: What's one of your favorite songs on the film's soundtrack?

PATTINSON: It's funny because I gave Catherine a ton of songs I was listening to when I was shooting the film. They were all very different. I gave her music from a lot of young female acoustic singers. One artist was a girl named Laura Marling. I don't know if she's famous in America or not. She's really young. She's 18 now, but she wrote loads of songs when she was 16. It's very desperate music. I was also listening to a lot of music from György Ligeti. He's this Polish composer. It's all very different from what ended up on the soundtrack — Linkin Park and such. [Laughs] I didn't even give Catherine my song, "Never Think," for the soundtrack. Nikki [Reed, who plays Rosalie Hale] gave it to her. My song wasn't supposed to be for the soundtrack though. Catherine cut the song to the scene on her own. To have a career in music is so hard, especially now. So many people will try to influence you. Even now, because I've got the song on the soundtrack, people are saying, "We want to give you a contract…then you have to do all this shit. You have to do a co-written album. You can co-write one song on your album. You have to do it in white makeup on the cover and call it Out of Twilight." [Laughs]

In the ‘Twilight’ zone

SP’s interview with the vampire

Bobby the vampire player: Robert Pattinson(right) with Kristen Stewart

BY BERT OSBORNE

Unless you’re part of the massive teen fan base that’s been eagerly anticipating the release of “Twilight”—the first of a proposed series of movies based on the wildly popular books by Stephenie Meyer—you may never have heard of Robert Pattinson before. The 22-year-old British actor plays Edward Cullen, the ageless vampire (108 going on 18) whose star-crossed high-school romance with the mortal Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) fuels the franchise. With basically only a small role (as Cedric Diggory) in two Harry Potter films (“The Goblet of Fire,” “The Order of the Phoenix”) to his credit, Pattinson is poised to make a very big splash. He talked about the new movie during a recent interview in Los Angeles.

Q You were quoted at a recent “Twilight” event at ComicCon describing the experience as “entering the gates of Hell.”

A
Yeah, that’s been following me around a bit [laughs]. I really didn’t mean it in any derogatory sense. All I meant was, there was this great noise when we arrived for that, these thousands upon thousands of young girls screaming out my name. I knew there was this great anticipation about the movie, because we’d been aware of all the blogs being posted online during the filming, but I think that was the first actual sign we had of just how huge this thing really was.

How does it compare to a lot of the hoopla surrounding all the “Harry Potter” movies?

It’s completely different. By the time I did my bits [in the “Potter” films], there’d already been three earlier movies, so everything was sort of operating like a slick, well-oiled machine. With “Twilight,” on the other hand, everything kept growing and changing and reformulating as we were working on it. We were basically making a little indie movie with a small company [Summit Entertainment]. … We definitely weren’t making a blockbuster. There were no big names in the cast. We were scrambling the whole time about how to set things up, how to make the characters interesting enough to support a franchise. I mean, Edward doesn’t age. He doesn’t really change in any dramatic way. Naturally, the first movie lays down a lot of the ground rules about vampires and whatnot, but we put a lot of thought into it. Some of it was off the cuff, reinventing whole scenarios with the other movies in mind.

Did you ever feel it was hopeless, living up to the expectations of fans of the “Twilight” books?

I wouldn’t say hopeless. I sort of expected a certain amount of criticism, and even appreciated it. I mean, I was almost embarrassed even going into the audition. Edward’s described as this perfect man, with an impeccable face and body. Everything about him is just amazing. There’s no way I could ever live up to that [laughs]. I was quite thankful when the initial reaction to my casting wasn’t 100 percent positive, because I’m not perfect. A lot of times, I look like a bum. It was like, “Cool. Maybe I can just be a character actor instead of a leading man.”

In the upcoming film “Little Ashes,” you play Salvador Dali, right?

Actually, I did that movie before “Twilight,” and it was a defining moment for me. I’d been disinterested and thinking about giving up acting before that role came along, and I mainly took it because it seemed like an excuse to take a three-month vacation in Spain. I didn’t speak a word of Spanish, so it was pretty intense, but it gave me a reason to focus on the script and do a lot of research into the character, to a ridiculous degree. It was the first time I really felt satisfied with my work, and that made me want to keep acting. I want to bring that intensity to every job, including [“Twilight”]. Even though it’s essentially a teen movie, I was determined not to make it too cheesy, as if I were only cashing a paycheck.

Why had you become disinterested in acting?

Mainly because most movies being made now are designed in such a way that it’s all about making a lot of money. … I’m not interested in simply adding more shit to the pile. I’d rather just not be a part of it, in that case. SP

Twilight Soundtrack Review-Kudos to Rob

'Twilight' soundtrack by various artists

By Jenara Gardner
Globe Correspondent / November 24, 2008
Fun, enchanting, and angst-driven, the "Twilight" soundtrack appeals to the emotionally brooding teenager in all of us. The album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, invites young, vampire-obsessed Twi-hards to rock out one minute and contemplate life's injustices the next. It starts with the hard-hitting beats of Muse's "Supermassive Black Hole" and Paramore's "Decode." With fervent guitar riffs and a sensual melody, "Decode" captures the confused longing of first love. On the softer side is "Never Think," a surprisingly intimate ballad written and performed by the movie's star, Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward, a genteel vampire in love with Bella, the girl next door. The song's beauty lies in its simplicity: Pattinson's acoustic guitar and unexpectedly soulful voice begging the girl he loves to leave him for her own good. The most anticipated track is Carter Burnwell's "Bella's Lullaby," an instrumental piece meant to embody Edward's love for Bella. The piece, which the distraught vampire plays throughout the book series, is hauntingly beautiful but lacks the passion readers have come to expect. Overall, though, the CD is true to "Twilight - and to the all-consuming desire of young, unattainable love. (Out now)

ESSENTIAL: "Never Think"

Philadelphia Daily News Interview

'Twilight' star finds uneasy fit with fame.
(Dani's favorite interview so far, I know I say that  a lot but read it, he is truly fascinating.)

By EMMA GREENBERG
Philadelphia Daily News

"Twilight" star Rob Pattinson was only a short time into his heartthrob publicity tour when he arrived in Philadelphia last week, and the magnitude of his role as teenage vampire Edward Cullen was already getting to him.

Not quite a typical It guy, the 22-year-old actor wasn't exactly oozing charisma or confidence.

In two hours he would be facing 1,000 shrieking fans at the King of Prussia Mall, but in his suite at the Four Seasons Hotel he cringed at every mention of the word fame.

The London-born actor bashfully stared at the floor and ran his fingers through his now infamous hair as he answered questions about the cultlike following of "Twilight"-obsessed teenage girls and their mothers.

"It's really strange when you go from like no one caring to people going like, 'Oh yeah, I saw that guy from 'Twilight' being an idiot.' I mean, it's strange," Pattinson mused. Refusing to make eye contact or even use the first person when discussing his outrageously successful press tour, Pattinson tried to disassociate himself from his character.

But that might be impossible.

Thanks to his role as Edward, Pattinson has already attracted a fan base of thousands of teenage girls willing to camp out in the rain for hours for a two-second encounter.

He is trying not to let it go to his head.

"So many young people who get a big hit kind of get hyped up," he said. "They start to believe their own hype and then everyone starts to, like, cut them down immediately. And I just feel like I'm being propelled by something I have absolutely no control over.

" . . . I always feel like I'm going to get my head cut off."

The intensity of the past few weeks confuses him. Dressed in black jeans, a nondescript black jacket, black leather Nikes and a white(ish) T-shirt, Pattinson looks more like a gawky, shy, awkward teen (albeit with perfect bone structure and no acne) than the brooding vampire the "Twilight" legion wants him to be.

He got a taste of life in the spotlight after playing Cedric Diggory in two Harry Potter movies, but then he "squandered away" his Harry Potter momentum and just hung out with some L.A. waitresses until returning home to London. That's where he was when he landed "Twilight," living with his best friend in a tiny apartment with one chair, a TV, and homemade furniture.

"It was so cool," he said nostalgically. "You had to walk through a restaurant kitchen to get up to the roofs but you could like walk along all the roofs . . . I didn't do anything for a year, I just sat on the roof and played music . . . it was like the best time I had ever had.

"I never set out to be an actor," Pattinson offered as an explanation of why he isn't worried about failing. "Though I'd be quite annoyed if it fell apart, because I quite enjoy doing it."

Before acting, he imagined a very different life. Pattinson planned on going to the prestigious London School of Economics to study international relations and politics. He ended up making Harry Potter movies instead, which gobbled up years of his teen life.

"It went on for so long," he said, "I didn't have to decide what to do and I didn't have to do any exams or anything. It seemed like a really easy option."

After his time off "doing nothing," Pattinson tried to reignite his acting career in part because he needed some structure.

"I guess I must have matured a little bit last year," Pattinson reflected, laughing. "And I guess maybe I missed school and I missed kind of working in a structured way and so I started looking at scripts and acting in a very structured way. I forced myself to feel like I was working."

Besides the movie-star thing, Pattinson is also trying screenwriting. He has already written a few scripts, the most recent one about the slave trade. And he wants to have a production company by the time he is 26.

"I guess I'm just a control freak," he said. "I don't like the way the film industry is . . . If you come with a good script and then it goes to the studios and gets financing, it all gets changed because they want to make money. And it's like, how do you know if it's going to make money or not? All you're doing is making it generic when you do that, and making it generic is no guarantee that it's going to make money either.

"The only way to abandon that is to take risks," he added passionately. "And you need to be able to trust people. So you get a company together with people you know are good and you know work hard and you can make good stuff. That's kind of what I want to do."

But for now, Pattinson must get through the "Twilight" of his young career.

He said all the press is tiring and he has "an overwhelming urge to say something really terrible" every time he has to face 1,000 screaming 14-year-olds. He has been traveling with the same bag of clothes since he was in Italy almost a month ago.

"It's weird how odd your clothes start to smell," he confessed, half-seriously.

His character's loner image seems to ring true in his own personal life as well.

"I'm good at disappearing," he said. "I don't have too much of a problem with it. There's hardly anyone I want to speak to . . . I spend most of the time just avoiding phone calls, just avoiding everything."
