LA Times Breakout Stars of 2008

Plucked from obscurity: Breakout stars of 2008
Is it the British accent? His alleged negligence of personal hygiene? Could it be his total cluelessness over how to maneuver in his newfound fame? Or is he just the lucky bloke who got cast as hottie teen vampire Edward in "Twilight"? (Answer: All of the above.) And the 22-year-old Pattinson won't be disappearing back into obscurity any time soon. He and "Twilight" costar Kristen Stewart start filming the sequel, "New Moon," in March.

10 Most Fascinating People of 2008

No Barbara Walters doesn't have Rob on her list(shame!) but The Mercury a Philadelphia based newspaper and our very own Kimberly thinks (and we obviously agree) that Robert Pattinson was one of the most fascinating people of 2008. He is #2 on her list coming only second to the one and only Edward Cullen at #1 :)

Check out her entire list HERE and show her some love.

#2. Robert Pattinson. C’mon, you all had to know he’d make my list. Not since Leonardo DiCaprio went down with the Titanic have I been so captivated by a handsome, young actor. And boy is he young … only 22. Being cast as the lead in the movie adaptation of Twilight literally turned him into a overnight star. A brief mall tour of Hot Topic stores turned 14-year-old girls ravenous, showing up by the thousands. And most of their mothers were there too.
But it's not just about Twilight, he's quite the musician as well, playing piano and guitar; possesses smooth vocals; writes songs and scripts, and, of course, there's that irresistable British accent. It's no wonder most of us have no problem with his hobo-style of dress and messy, unwashed hair. I think we'd even be forgiving if we found out he really was a vampire ...
Most of the time, I'm a closet fan (those around me aren't aware of my problem), and luckily I’ve stumbled upon a wonderful support group online of other similarly-aged women who’ve become just as taken with the British wonder. Fortunately for him, we’re all content to keep it amongst ourselves and not turn stalker. It’s all led to a fun cyber-friendship with these great ladies from around the world! Thanks Rob.

So, if I think he’s so wonderful, why isn’t he No. 1 you might ask? Well, that space is reserved for the only "person" I found even more fascinating than Pattinson this year … (continued here)

The "Twilight" hottie sent heat waves through chilly London for the "Twilight" premiere in this dark brown, two-button, notch label Dolce & Gabbana suit. He also sported a white shirt and charcoal tie by famed designers D&G.

and yahoo has a video of Rob at UK Twilight premiere HERE, it doesn't load well for me but AJ says this video claims New Moon will be shooting in Canada and Italy.

How to Be - Behind the Scenes

Official 'Little Ashes' Website

Film Synopsis:

Madrid in 1922 is a city wavering on the edge of change as traditional values are challenged by the dangerous new influences of jazz, Freud and the avant-garde. Salvador DalĂ arrives at university at the age of 18 years old, determined to become a great artist. His bizarre blend of shyness and rampant exhibitionism attracts the attention of two of the university’s social elite — Federico GarcĂa Lorca and Luis Buñuel.
Salvador is absorbed into their decadent group and for a time he, Luis and Federico become a formidable trio, the most ultra-modern group in Madrid. However, as time passes, Salvador feels an increasingly strong pull toward the charismatic Federico — who is oblivious to the attention he is getting from his beautiful writer friend, Magdalena. Finally, in the face of his friends’ preoccupations — and Federico’s growing renown as a poet — Luis sets off for Paris in search of his own artistic success.
Alone in Madrid, Federico struggles against his psyche, tortured by the damning implications of his own religious beliefs and the undeniable voice of his flesh. He is haunted by news of Salvador, who is collaborating on a Surrealist film with Luis and has embarked on an affair with Gala, a married woman.
By 1936 Spain is teetering on the precipice of civil war, and Federico, now a highly acclaimed and controversial playwright, receives an invitation to dinner from Salvador and Gala. But the hosts have a rather unusual agenda and the evening is a disaster. A week later, Salvador is hosting a party when he discovers that Federico has been assassinated in the outbreak of war. The walls of self-denial that surround the artist come crashing down as he realizes, too late, the depth of his love for Federico.

Repeat offenders

The post is not as controversial as the title :) There are lots of links to pieces of articles from UK this morning but most of them are just repetition of one another so I'm not posting them. But if you want to check them out:

People.com:
Method acting?

Vampire-playing Robert Pattinson admits he sometimes slips into character when he's out with the ladies.

"I've been known for a little nibble," he told reporters at the London premiere of Twilight.
Channel 4 News :
Heart-throb Pattinson said: "I made a bet as a joke with my manager to say how much it would make opening weekend and it made that much. It's like it'll make $80 million and it was like $5 million off. No one was expecting - it beat Bond opening weekend - it's completely nuts."

Robert Pattinson is a bit of a loner

The Telegraph has interviewed Robert, here are some parts and you can read the rest HERE.

"Really, I'm a bit of a loner and not that good with dealing with loads of people," he smiles when I ask about his newfound celebrity. "Most of the time, I feel that going out is a complete waste of time. I'd rather stay in a create something rather than go out and talk."

This is not, I must confess, the response that I was expecting. Pattinson is clearly a creative type - both he and one of his two older sisters, Elizabeth, are accomplished musicians - and yet with his obvious good looks and innate charm, he seems the sort of fellow who would revel in his status as teenage idol.

"Not really," he says. "It's funny, but about a year ago I'd talk to girls and no-one would be interested." This I find hard to believe.

"Really, it's true, and then when it was announced that I would be in Twilight, and the book's author gave me her seal of approval, everyone seemed to change their mind. The attention I get now is just mind-bending."

Not of all of it, he notes, is welcome. During the recent promotional tour for Twilight in the US, Pattinson was subjected to a bout of ear-piercing wailing that would have made The Beatles proud. It should be noted, however, that a fair portion of Twilight fans are even younger than those shrieking and fainting for Lennon and McCartney, and he recalls with horror the moment that a seven-year-old girl approached him and asked whether he'd bite her neck.

"That was really rather freaky," he notes. "So many younger girls are obsessed with this character and all that desire. They see Edward as unthreateningly sexual." Indeed, this seems to be the secret to the Twilight saga's success.

The books' author, Stephenie Meyer, is a devout Mormon (the idea for her story coming in a dream), and her four novels - Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn - have a sexual undercurrent without featuring sex itself. "I think that's true," concedes Pattinson.

"The success of the books does, I think, comes from the fact that fans can yearn and lust after Edward, and yet certainly in the first book, there's no actual sexual contact." Hence young readers can splash about in a pool of teenage lust and obsession, without, courtesy of a cleverly constructed plot, needing to dip into the turbulent waters of scary teenage sex.

Skipped

In short, he's not sure whether to nuzzle her neck or to bite it. As a result, Edward and Bella's passion remains unconsummated. "Basically, Twilight is a big metaphor for sexual abstinence, and yet it's both sexual and erotic underneath. There are so many elements in the story which are sexy."

skipped

Admittedly, his character is less prominent in New Moon, but Pattinson is still set for an extended spell in the spotlight. "It's bizarre," he says, "but I never really had any aspirations to be an actor when I was young. I wanted to play the piano in a bar, to be the old dude with a whisky glass, all dishevelled. I love the piano; they've actually used some of my music in the film."

Pattinson was born in Barnes, the youngest of three children, to a father who traded classic cars and mother who'd worked for a modelling agency. It was his father who encouraged the young Robert into acting, although his motivation wasn't entirely artistic.

"When I was younger my dad spotted a bunch of girls in a cafe and they were all really excited, so he asked them where they'd been," he explains. "When they said that they'd been to drama classes, he reckoned I should get myself down there!" Which the young Pattinson promptly did, working backstage until, one day, "a bunch of people left. I was the only one still there and got the lead role by default."

That lead role was in the Thornton Wilder play Our Town, his performance earning him an agent. The agent then secured him an audition for the fourth Harry Potter movie, where he was subsequently cast as Cedric.

"I kind of blew it after the Potter films," he concedes. "There was a chance for me to really kick on and use the exposure but I didn't really want to do anything. Looking back, it was a good thing - I was able to teach myself how to act for a start. I could have done some more teen movies, but I thought what was the point? I'm not all that fussed by making loads of money.

"In fact, I'm a bit of miser. The car that I have I got when I came out to LA for $2,000 I still have. It's a death trap and has nearly killed me five times, but I don't care. I'm going to squeeze every dollar I can out of that car."

Empire video: Twilight UK Premiere-Rob nibbles

The video link on youtube incase you can't view the embedded one.

They also have an article and the parts with Rob are:

While Mintz-Plasse was clearly McLovin’ the attention, the star of the show – and the sexiest man in the world according to teenage girls everywhere – Robert Pattinson continued to be taken aback by the insane response from fans. “It is loud, and kind of intimidating. When people are screaming in your face it’s hard to know what to make of it.” Of the crowds, he remarked: “They camp out overnight. I don’t understand. There’s nothing I’ve ever been that fanatical about!”

Talking about his upcoming role in Little Ashes as Salvador Dali he said: “It was like complete opposite. That was a little tiny movie and this has become a huge franchise.”

He finished off with some tantalising titbits about his current dating status, revealing that although he is not “prowling around” for a girl, he is also not dating Camilla Belle as has been rumoured (girls all over the globe can now share a collective sigh of relief). Apparently ladies these days go about chatting him up in a very different manner than before: “Now it’s like (in theatrical American girl voice) “Oh I’m such a big fan!”” He also noted, of his vampire alter-ego: “I haven’t bitten anyone tonight but I have done before. I have been known for a little nibble.” (Gozde: Oh come on! He is really trying to kill us with these mental images!)

BBC Newsbeat Interview with Robert Pattinson

Twilight star 'doesn't like attention'

Vampire movie Twilight has broken box office records in America and is set to do the same in the UK. Actor Robert Pattinson was amongst cast members in London for the UK premiere. Newsbeat caught up with him to find out why he's camera shy, how he copes with hordes of screaming fans and what it would take to get him wandering around naked.

It's a bit crazy what's been happening around Twilight, isn't it?

It's a little bit over the top. I feel the same in my head I guess. I was quite a paranoid person anyway, so it doesn't really feed well when people are looking at you. I'm not really in the right job. I don't like having my photo taken. I don't like the attention.

Do you have fans following you around?

Whenever I have to do anything fan-related there's always a whole bunch of people. My brain kind of shuts down when there are loads of people screaming at me. I'm not thinking at all so I can't really remember what's happened immediately afterwards.

There are stories in the papers about a multi-million pound deal for appearing in the rest of the Twilight series. Are they true?

I read some gossip thing saying, because I looked really uncomfortable in a paparazzi photo or something, they're like, 'He should get used to it. That's the price to pay if you're getting $12m (£8.1m) a movie'. If I'm getting paid $12m a movie I'd walk around naked. That's all nonsense. I don't know who makes that stuff up. Even the price for the first one was nonsense. (Gozde: Fundraiser! Can we get 12mil?)

Are you doing the next two films?

I went into it doing it as a trilogy. They're shooting the second one in March. I'm not really in it that much in the second one. The lead character is somebody else, which is another reason why I'm not being paid $12m. I've got two scenes. (Gozde: Oh bullocks! Taylor is the lead, the movie won't make that much money. Does this risk Eclipse? Did Rob read the script or is he just saying this? Damn it!)

People are calling you the next Jude Law. Do those claims sit comfortably with you?

No. The same thing happened with Harry Potter. You get a bit of heat and everybody says you're this, you're that. Then it dies down. You just do jobs. I don't know any actor who's followed through, when they say he's the next this and then he actually has become the next that. I don't get that. I don't see what the point is.

How do you cope with the screaming fans at premieres?

I'm not particularly good at coping with it. I just cope. I just leave my brain at the door and just stand there. I can get the screaming more than I get the photo things. That's the worst, when you have this wall of photographers. I've never understood the logic in how they do it. Everybody shouts at the same time, and you're trying to do a logical thing, looking from the left to the right. And they almost always end up looking disappointed with you afterwards.

Did you ever imagine that girls would be obsessed with your hair?

That's the weirdest thing ever. I don't get that at all. It's really strange.

A lot of the gossip websites seem to have an obsession with you as well, don't they?

I think someone follows me. They do the most random stuff. I get a photo taken through a burger drive-through window and it's like, 'What?'. They always seem like they're six feet away. I don't understand. I'm walking around and I don't see anybody.

First reports from Twilight UK premiere

Black carpet for Twilight premiere

Thousands of screaming teenage girls braved the freezing cold for the premiere of vampire love story Twilight.

The stars of the film Robert Pattinson, 22, and Kristen Stewart, 18, walked a black carpet blasted with dry ice for atmosphere in London's Leicester Square.

The film is based on the first novel in Stephanie Meyer's series about high school girl Bella Swann who falls in love with vampire Edward.

In its first weekend at US cinemas Twilight outsold new James Bond film Quantum of Solace and High School Musical 3.

Director Catherine Hardwicke said: "We love London even though it's so cold. These fans are braver because they're out here and it's freezing so they are heartier souls."

Harry Potter star Robert said of his hysterical fans: "It's absolutely mad. I'm in a daze. They're here for the character, not for me. I don't know what to do. I'm terrified of doing the sequel."

Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella, claims some feminist groups disapproved of her character falling for a dominant vampire. She said: "It's a love story about two people who would die for each other. Bella has very innately female qualities, she really trusts herself. It takes a really strong person to subject themselves to that.

"A lot of feminist groups have problems with her which I don't understand because it takes someone very strong to be able to give that away."

Director Hardwicke said when casting Robert for the role of Edward it was an easy decision.

She said: "Robert and Kristen have this amazing sexual chemistry between them. We could see it in the audition. That's why we cast them. You can't create that. It has to be there."
