David Cronenberg Talks To The Sunday Times About Calming Down A Nervous Robert Pattinson

David Cronenberg Talks To The Sunday Times About Calming Down A Nervous Robert Pattinson

Cosmopolis is Cronenberg’s most prescient film yet. The mercurial director tells Kevin Maher about capitalism, phone-hacking and calming a manic Robert Pattinson

It’s the early erotic climax of David Cronenberg’s new movie Cosmopolis, and it features teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson playing Eric Packer, a billionaire asset manager. Packer is staring deeply into the eyes of his financial director, Jane Melman (Emily Hampshire). The pair banter. They talk about foreign finance ministers. They joke about Melman’s water bottle. They even discuss the ubiquity of sexual impulses.

There’s just one thing awry, however. And it’s the fact that Packer is also on all fours, with his trousers down, in the middle of a protracted and hugely squelchy six-minute prostate examination.

This, of course, is very Cronenberg. For the man who gave us exploding heads in Scanners and sexualised body scars in, well, everything from Rabid to eXistenZ, is famed for both his perverse desire to subvert expectations and for his thundering belief in the tyranny of biology — “We can never escape from the reality of the human body!” is a favourite mantra.

Great new interview with Rob and David

"Twilight" star Robert Pattinson may seem like nothing more than a teen heartthrob to his critics. But his detractors may change their minds after watching his risky performance in the new David Cronenberg film, "Cosmopolis."

In Canadian theatres on Friday, Pattinson headlines this masterful and, at times, chilling adaptation of Don DeLillo's 2003 novel, "Cosmopolis."

True to DeLillo's satirical work, the British actor plays billionaire Eric Packer, a young fund manager who experiences a meltdown one day as he cruises through Manhattan in the back of a stretch limo. As Packer's trip to the hairdresser unfolds, he glides in and out of the lives of strangers, businesses associates and his wife Elise (played by Sarah Gadon).

Robert Pattinson is "the perfect choice" for Georges Duroy and he is finally in US theaters this weekend

Robert Pattinson is "the perfect choice" for Georges Duroy and he is finally in US theaters this weekend

UPDATE: Two great reviews came out for the Bel Ami release in the US!

The San Francisco Chronicle reviewed Bel Ami and they gave Rob great compliments!
From this day on, Pattinson cannot be written off as the pale, neurasthenic fellow who would really like to kiss Kristen Stewart in the "Twilight" movies, but he's afraid he'll rip her veins out.
In fact, if "Bel Ami" is any indication, Pattinson should be known as a very good actor.
...
What distinguishes Pattinson in the role is the sense he conveys of someone roiling and churning beneath a surface that is almost, but not quite, calm.
At various times in "Bel Ami," Pattinson registers unexpressed terror, shame, rage and scorn, so that it is impossible not to recognize and even start to feel his tension and to understand the life-and-death consequences behind his every interaction. Young Georges (Pattinson) has nothing and yet finds himself traveling in upper-class Parisian circles - with people who have everything, who know his every move in advance and who would be just as happy to see him land back in the gutter.
...
It's a pleasure to watch him onscreen and wait for the explosion.

Salon gave Bel Ami the "Pick of the Week" calling it an "enjoyably soapy 19th-century costume drama". An excerpt from their review:
It’s legitimate to dislike this film, of course; one of the things I appreciated about “Bel Ami,” perhaps perversely, is how forcefully it resists easy enjoyment. But I think “Bel Ami” has been criticized in some quarters for being exactly what it sets out to be, a trashy, high-culture morality tale with an unpleasant hero and a bleak view of human relations. Pattinson plays Georges throughout as an unsophisticated country boy whose desires and appetites are almost animalistic. He can be a friendly, loyal dog or a scheming, hungry wolf, but the world of high-society Paris rapidly educates him about which of those personas is more conducive to advancement.

The time has arrived, USA. Bel Ami is finally showing in theaters. Near you? Well that's a different story but we'll get there in a moment. I'm sure many of you have already seen the film if you live in certain countries and many of you have seen the film on VOD when it was released May 4th in the US. However, we need to give Rob support in the theaters. The release is limited so if the theaters are near you, make an outing of it and enjoy DuRob on the big screen. My viewings will take place Sunday and I can't wait to see him the way I should have always seen him. LARGE!

Click HERE to visit MovieTickets and search for a theater near you. The release is limited so you still might have a hard time finding the film locally. If it is local, GO SUPPORT ROB! Magnolia Pictures has theaters and dates on their site as well but not all theaters.

More Bel Ami goodies after the cut to celebrate the US release!

NEW: Robert Pattinson on the cover of Day & Night + Rob & David interview with Richard Crouse & MORE!

UPDATE: Since this was a mini Cosmopolis cluster of news, I'm adding new footage of Rob inside the theater of his Cosmopolis premiere at Cannes and David mentioning Rob in a new interview. Videos at the bottom.

A new promotional still from Cosmopolis features Rob on the cover of Day & Night magazine!

This is the audio of Rob and David's interview with Richard Crouse. Rob is great. I love him in this setting. It sounds like the interview took place on June 5th, the day after the press conference. He's very thoughtful with his answers and it's over 10 min long. There is a spoiler around the 8:50-9:10 area. Skip that and Rob picks back up talking after 9:30 when the question finished.

Highlights:
  • Rob talking about journalists asking if his roles reflect his real self and not relating to that question
  • Rob talks about people's fascination with fame
  • Rob says he thinks the limos aren't that present in NYC anymore
  • Rob likes the poetry of the script and says a great anecdote about his friend who wrote a script. This led to him saying how much he loves the language of Cosmopolis. "Whenever I see clips of it, I want to say the lines again." This really hit me because after seeing the film, I haven't been able to stop saying the lines the way these characters spoke them.

Quick glimpse of Rob in the theater at Cannes. You can also see Kristen and Tom.

Thank you Sky for the heads up! xx
