Fun, enchanting, and angst-driven, the "Twilight" soundtrack appeals to the emotionally brooding teenager in all of us. The album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, invites young, vampire-obsessed Twi-hards to rock out one minute and contemplate life's injustices the next. It starts with the hard-hitting beats of Muse's "Supermassive Black Hole" and Paramore's "Decode." With fervent guitar riffs and a sensual melody, "Decode" captures the confused longing of first love. On the softer side is "Never Think," a surprisingly intimate ballad written and performed by the movie's star, Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward, a genteel vampire in love with Bella, the girl next door. The song's beauty lies in its simplicity: Pattinson's acoustic guitar and unexpectedly soulful voice begging the girl he loves to leave him for her own good. The most anticipated track is Carter Burnwell's "Bella's Lullaby," an instrumental piece meant to embody Edward's love for Bella. The piece, which the distraught vampire plays throughout the book series, is hauntingly beautiful but lacks the passion readers have come to expect. Overall, though, the CD is true to "Twilight - and to the all-consuming desire of young, unattainable love. (Out now)
