Australia will flex its Hollywood muscle in Los Angeles next week, with Baz Luhrmann, Jacki Weaver, Joel Edgerton and Alex O'Loughlin among the list of Aussies to be honoured at a benefit dinner in Los Angeles.

The dinner, organised by LA-based non-profit Australians in Film, will also include plenty big name non-Aussies, headed by Twilight heart-throb Robert Pattinson, Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell and Matrix duo Andy and Lana Wachowski who will present awards.

Luhrmann and Edgerton's Blue-Tongue Films collective will receive the Fox Studios Australia-sponsored Orry-Kelly International Award, named after Australia's most prolific Oscar-winning costume designer, who won three Academy Awards in the 1950s for An American in Paris, Les Girls and Some Like It Hot.

Weaver, who became hot property in Hollywood with her 2010 performance in the Blue-Tongue crime drama Animal Kingdom, and Hawaii Five-O star O'Loughlin, will receive Breakthrough Awards.

Australia's touted next big thing actor, Sullivan Stapleton, who stars in the upcoming 300 sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire and had a role opposite Sean Penn in Gangster Squad, will also receive a Breakthrough Award.

The AusFilm international award will be presented to Warner Bros president of worldwide production Steve Papazian.
The annual benefit dinner, to be held at LA's InterContinental hotel next Thursday (October 24), will support Australians in Film's mission to usher Australian filmmakers into the international market and provide educational programs for the organisation's members.

FIRST LOOK: Robert Pattinson's "Maps To The Stars" Cannes Promo Poster

UPDATE:
EOne have added the "Maps to The Stars" poster to their International Film Page HERE and have added 2plot summaries too
"Led by the loathsome yet funny and touching child-star Benjie, we witness the convoluted world of shallow, selfish celebrities and their minions, all of whom are about to be manipulated and destroyed by the young woman who literally represents the fruit of their twisted machinations, Agatha, Benjie’s tormented, apparently psychotic sister. As much as it is a sharp, comic look at a vacant and corrupt world, MAPS TO THE STARS is also a haunting ghost story."
And another one:
“The Weiss family is the archetypical Hollywood dynasty: father Sanford is an analyst and coach, who has made a fortune with his self-help manuals; mother Cristina mostly looks after the career of their son Benjie, 13, a child star. One of Sanford’s clients, Havana, is an actress who dreams of shooting a remake of the movie that made her mother, Clarice, a star in the 60s. Clarice is dead now and visions of her come to haunt Havana at night… Adding to the toxic mix, Benjie has just come off a rehab program he joined when he was 9 and his sister, Agatha, has recently been released from a sanatorium where she was treated for criminal pyromania.”

Robert Pattinson and David Cronenberg's Maps To The Stars cast praised!

Robert Pattinson and David Cronenberg's Maps To The Stars cast praised!

 photo RobSJJD.jpg

I love when news drops for Rob films because we get to have these awesome roundup posts of the positive buzz. We aren't the only ones excited for Robenberg 2.0 and the cast that's coming along for the ride. Check it out!

CriterionCast:
It’s about damn time this picture gets ready to go….the auteur will be joined by one hell of a cast. This sounds like yet another superb satire from one of today’s great satirists, and it’s interesting to see Pattinson re-team with his Cosmopolis director for another film. I was a huge fan of that picture, and really think this could be the start of a really exciting friendship. Hopefully this one can arrive sooner rather than later.
ScreenRant:
Pattinson has been attached to the project almost since its conception and, as was the case with Cronenberg’s 2012 thriller Cosmopolis, it’s largely thanks to the involvement of the highly bankable star that Maps to the Stars has received funding and is heading into production.
CinemaBlend:
Few directors have had such noticeable career arcs as mad genius David Cronenberg. His early career was filled with paranoid science fiction that thrived on mutilated humans, and that aesthetic was left behind and a more thoughtful approach to the stranger plateaus of the human condition took over his work during the 1990s. And in the last ten years, he’s given us a handful of stories drowning in gritty realism as well as an uncharacteristic novel adaptation and the birth of psychoanalysis.
So of course it makes sense that his next project would have one of the stranger plotlines around, but as per usual, he’s got a great cast already involved.
TheFilmStage:
Yeah, it sounds like something we’re very much looking forward to…
DreadCentral:
A-list cast lines up…
ThePlaylist:
…It’s also a “ghost story,” which certainly raises an intrigued eyebrow. The cast is top shelf…
MTV:
“Cosmopolis” director David Cronenberg may have found his new muses. The auteur has just enlisted Robert Pattinson and his “Cosmopolis” co-star Sarah Gadon for his next project, “Maps to the Stars.”
There are a few more excerpts on MapsToTheStarsFilm. Kate and I will be over there covering the film and all involved and of course bringing you the Rob specifics here. :)

Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce talk about The Rover, expected to release later this year

Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce talk about The Rover, expected to release later this year
 photo HQTheRoverStilllWithRobertPattinsonGuyPearce-1.jpg

More news about The Rover! Wooohoo!!!  The latest is from The Sydney Morning Herald:
Guy Pearce has given a glimpse of what to expect from The Rover, the futuristic film he finished shooting with Robert Pattinson in outback South Australia last month. Director David Michod's keenly-anticipated follow-up to Animal Kingdom is ''an unusual story'' set in a world gone wrong in the near future.
''It's a military state now, it's every man for himself a little bit, it's a very bleak kind of world,'' says Pearce, who's about to reach cinemas as the villain in Iron Man 3. In The Rover, the Australian star plays the title role, a damaged man named Eric with nothing left to live for. Trying to track down a dangerous gang, he meets a young stranger, Rey (Pattinson), and they forge an uneasy alliance.
"[He's] somebody he has no interest in," Pearce says. "He's purely using him to get where he needs to go. So through this bleak ... world, there's a little connection that's kind of made, which on some level you might think would be a positive thing for this character.
"But on some level it actually makes things worse for him - to really believe that there's some sense of love in the world or any sense of humanity or compassion. So it's a pretty bleak story."
As filming finished in the small town of Marree, almost 700 kilometres north of Adelaide, Pattinson said he wanted to be part of The Rover because "it was a startlingly original script, and it was one of those parts where you read it and you think, 'I'd love to do this, but I know I'm never going to get it'."
To play Rey, the Twilight star was dressed as unkempt and unshaven, with make-up to discolour his teeth. Pattinson says his character, an American who has come to Australia with his brother (played by Scoot McNairy), is "the kind of person who has been brought up to believe they're incapable of living independently. Someone has always been looking after him."
The two central characters, Eric and Rey, have a shifting relationship that Pattinson described as "strange and disturbing." It's a film, expected to be out later this year, that seems to have echoes of the classic post-apocalyptic Australian film Mad Max. ''Not as camp though,'' says Pearce, was also in Animal Kingdom. ''Mad Max is great, don't get me wrong. But it's heightened in a way, whereas this is pretty earnest.''
Eeeeeeeeeeeee this sounds so good! I'm so excited I just can't hide it. And did you catch that last little bit about it being expected later this year?? That's mention #2 on a 2013 release date! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

FIRST STILL Of Robert Pattinson & Guy Pearce In "The Rover"

UPDATED: Added EW's First Look
FIRST STILL Of Robert Pattinson & Guy Pearce In "The Rover"

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Is anyone else super excited for this movie?
Make sure and read the article underneath, some great quotes from David Michod about Rob's character Rey.

From Entertainment Weekly:

Australia was founded as a repository for crooks and criminals — a wretched hive of scum and villainy, like the British Empire’s own Mos Eisley. Of course, that was a long time ago and the Australian national demeanor has since shifted from “kill or be killed” to “live and let live,” but David MichĂ´d’s gritty 2010 drama Animal Kingdom chronicled some of the country’s more modern criminal descendents. In his upcoming sophomore effort, The Rover, the director takes things even further.
Robert Pattinson plays a denizen of the Outback in the near future, after a worldwide financial collapse has sent many like him running to the still viable mines of the Australian desert. “It’s like a new gold rush,” says MichĂ´d. “Where people from all corners of the world have come out to the desert to scrape out an existence. Petty criminals and miscreants and hustlers.” Guy Pearce, who had an uncharacteristically reserved role in Animal Kingdom, gets to sink his teeth into a nicely nasty part opposite Pattinson. “The basic story is really quite elemental,” says MichĂ´d. “You’ve got a really dark, dangerous, murderous person in Guy’s character, and in Rob’s character you have a quite troubled and damaged, but beautiful and naĂŻve, soul.”
Of course, just by its setting and basic plot, The Rover is poised to draw comparisons to one of the antipodean country’s most memorable cinematic contributions. “You put cars in the desert in Australia and people are going to think of Mad Max,” says MichĂ´d. “And with all due respect to that film — and I stress that — I think The Rover is going to be way more chillingly authentic and menacing.”

For more on The Rover and first looks at other upcoming projects, pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly on stands Friday.

Robert Pattinson is the one to watch in film because the surface is just being scratched

Robert Pattinson is the one to watch in film because the surface is just being scratched

I enjoyed a few articles that were talking about the future for the Twilight cast and Rob's future made me proud and excited. It's a new era for him and it's going to be awesome to watch it unfold.

PhotobucketExcerpt from the AP via Seattle Times:
Pattinson has made some of the most daring and impressive choices of the three of them. Before being cast as the swoony vampire Edward Cullen, the lanky British actor appeared in another blockbuster franchise as Hogwarts student Cedric Diggory in 2005's "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." In 2009, he played Salvador Dali in the barely seen "Little Ashes," and last year he starred opposite Reese Witherspoon in the circus romance "Water for Elephants" - although Associated Press reviewer David Germain wrote there was "barely a spark" between the two.
But Pattinson also has worked with the likes of David Cronenberg, starring this year in the acclaimed Canadian director's financial drama "Cosmopolis," which takes place almost entirely inside a limousine. And he'll soon work with Cronenberg again in "Maps to the Stars," and also begin shooting Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert."
Jones says Pattison has wisely chosen to parlay his "Twilight" fame to collaborate with serious directors and actors.
"He knows he has a certain box office appeal so the fangirls are going to see him no matter what he's in," she said. "People are willing to work with him the first time, they see all this potential he has, then they want to come back and work with him again."
Constantinescu echoed those thoughts: "He's the one to watch for additional films down the line," he said. "We are just scratching the surface with Robert."
Excerpt from The Playlist:
Robert Pattinson
Before "Twilight": R-Patz had relatively few credits before he was R-Patz -- he was cut out of Mira Nair's "Vanity Fair," but bounced back with a major role as the ill-fated Cedric Diggory in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." A couple of small British TV roles and indies, "How To Be" and "Little Ashes," followed, most of which only really found audiences once he'd found success with the vampire franchise.
Chances Of Success After "Twilight": Strong creatively, but the financial success outside of "Twilight" has yet to come. The actor has found a huge female fanbase as a result of playing ageless vamp Edward Cullen, which helped Pattinson vehicles "Remember Me" and "Water For Elephants" find moderate success. Still, the Twihards mostly won't turn up for films outside the romantic weepie wheelhouse -- "Bel Ami" took a dreadful $120,000 earlier this year, and "Cosmopolis" didn't do much better, with a mere $750,000.
Still, to his credit, those films are indicative of his desire to work with interesting filmmakers, and a willingness to stretch himself, and that's something that looks to continue.
On the way, he has the apocalyptic thriller "The Rover," from "Animal Kingdom" director David Michod, "Man On Wire" helmer James Marsh's "Hold On To Me" with Carey Mulligan, a reunion with Cronenberg on "Maps To The Stars," and he's lined up to play T.E. Lawrence for Werner Herzog in period adventure "Queen Of The Desert," alongside Naomi Watts and Jude Law. They're all far from the obvious picks for a heartthrob, and even if the performances haven't necessarily wowed, we're sure he'll only continue to improve. But will his built-in audience stick around? A smart move might be to take something action/thriller-y targeted at the mainstream, to try and win a male following. Perhaps something like "American Assassin," which Chris Hemsworth just vacated.
Excerpt from VH1:
Robert Pattinson: Rob seems hellbent on defying any and every box you might want to place him in, post Twilight, so his range of projects is vast. In pre-production, he’s got Mission: Blacklist, in which he’ll play a military interrogator who helped find Saddam Hussein; Hold On to Me, in which he’ll play the love interest of Carey Mulligan, who’s plotting to kidnap the town’s richest guy; The Rover, about car thieves in the Australian Outback; and Queen of the Desert, about early-20th-century archaelogist Gertrude Bell (played by Naomi Watts). Then it looks like he’ll be re-teaming with Cosmopolis helmer David Cronenberg for something called Maps to the Stars. We’re breathless after just summarizing all that.
I'm going to like seeing mainstream take notice of Rob's talent more and more. The pigeon-holed him for so long and all his future roles will really let him explore untapped corners in his skill set. I know I don't need to ask you guys if you're as excited as I am because we've been saying these things in the articles for years. ;)

More information on Robert Pattinson's newest project, Hold On To Me

More information on Robert Pattinson's newest project, Hold On To Me

Hold On To Me made Variety's list of films that has AFM (American Film Market) buzzing and Film Nation released more information about the film.

Photobucket From FilmNation:
FilmNation will handle international sales and distribution on Academy Award® winning director James Marsh’s (Man on Wire) Hold On To Me starring Academy Award® Nominee Carey Mulligan (Drive, The Great Gatsby, An Education) and Robert Pattinson (Twilight, Cosmopolis). Hold On To Me is written by Brad Ingelsby (Out of the Furnace) and is an electrifying thriller based on the extraordinary true story of a femme fatale who kidnaps and ransoms the town’s richest man. The film will be produced by Alexandra Milchan alongside Todd Field and Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales and Mark Roybal.
Mulligan plays Nancy, a small town girl who callously leaves her boyfriend Jimmy (Pattinson) behind to chase a modelling career in New York City, breaking his heart in the process. To Nancy’s surprise, New York isn’t impressed by her and at 26, she’s back home waiting tables at the local diner. When she gets word that Jimmy has become a wealthy and successful criminal in Chicago, she tracks him down with a view to winning his affections, only to find crushing rejection. Fuelled by jealousy and an unquenchable thirst for fortune, Nancy finds Danny, a naĂŻve pawn she can seduce and manipulate to her own ends and together they embark on a life of crime. Success comes fast, and leaves faster but nothing and no one will stand in the way of Nancy’s naked, dangerous and deadly ambition.
The producers commented, "Glen Basner and his team are simply the best in the business. We are elated to be partnering with FilmNation in bringing to life this stranger than fiction, true crime story."
Sales will commence at the upcoming American Film Market.
FilmNation’s Glen Basner said, “Hold On To Me is a compelling and sexy modern day Bonnie and Clyde story that we’re excited to introduce to buyers at AFM. Carey Mulligan is certain to deliver one of the most memorable femme fatale performances in cinematic history.”
This is clearly Carey's vehicle but how great does it sound?? I'm so excited for Rob to be a part of it. Hell, I'm excited for Rob to be a part of all his upcoming films. He's working with great artists and the stories are so compelling. We have much to look forward to, DR. :)
