Patricia McKenzie Talks About Her Amazing, Very Sexy, Tense & Humorous Scene With Robert Pattinson In "Cosmopolis"

Cosmopolis Italia spoke to Patricia McKenzie (who plays Kendra Hays, one of Eric Packer’s bodyguards) about her career and filming Cosmopolis.



Here she talks about her “taser” scene with Robert Pattinson, her character’s need to dominate Eric and the “very sexy, tense and humorous” feel of the scene.

CI: In “Cosmopolis” you play Kendra Hays, Can you tell us something about her? Who is Kendra?PM: Kendra is an exhibitionist who craves power and wants to dominate Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) sexually. (Kate: ha ha She needs to get in line for that one) She was initially hired to be his bodyguard, but quickly becomes his lover. They are opposites in many ways, but both are hollow inside and searching for meaning in their existence. Ultimately, they risk leaving each other feeling as empty as they started.

CI: How was working with director David Cronenberg?

PM: Possibly my favourite experience on any production ever. David is a dream director to work with. The first time I met him, he gave me a big hug, and said “At last, we meet!” He is very calm and confident which made me feel that I could be instantly vulnerable with him. After each take, he would say to me and Rob, “Another great take!” It was a great relief, because we were shooting a fairly complicated love scene with wonderfully strange dialogue by Don Delillo. My only complaint was that we finished 6 days earlier than we were supposed to and none of us ready to leave that wonderful experience behind so soon. I would love to star in a long running TV series with David Cronenberg as the director!

CI: How was the mood on set?

PM: The mood of set was that of a happy, peaceful family, because David he gives everyone the time they need to do their best work. He also has a tendency to rehire the same people so the cast and crew are always an enviable mix of talent, professionalism and ego-less devotion to deliver a great film.

CI: Did you give any workout tips to Robert Pattinson? How about your own workout schedule?

PM: Our love scene happened one month ahead of schedule so neither of us had time to get in the exact shape we wanted to be in, but I did a juice fast three days prior, and he went to the pub and drank a beer. Rob already has an incredible screen presence that comes easily to him, so he is very relaxed about how he appears. (Kate: Yeap that's Rob alright)

A few months before we started shooting, I started boxing and combat training and I did a 3 week detox. It was something I always wanted to try, so I used the film as my motivation. I really enjoyed the process and have integrated the healthy eating and the boxing into my lifestyle.

CI: One of your scene involves you shooting Robert with a taser gun..did something funny happened that day? can you tell us something about it?

PM: For me the funny thing was that everyone approached the scene with no idea what was going to happen, but to be ready for anything. David, Robert and I explored it together, the way we might do if it were a play. We thought we had it nailed down, so we took a lunch break for the crew to light the scene. Then, after lunch, David said he wanted to shoot the scene a different way so the crew took time to re-light everything and Robert and I had time to bond a bit more before we started shooting the love scene. The result is amazing, very sexy, tense and humorous. (Kate: Ooooh!) I can’t really say what happens with the taser, you will have to see the movie to find out!

Have you contacted your co-star in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix—Robert Pattinson—to give him any advice about his own sudden fame because of the Twilight films? He was once quoted as saying that if given a choice between himself and you, that girls would choose you every time.

I don’t have his number, so haven’t spoken to him. But I can safely say that his insisting that girls would choose me over him that they would not. That they do not. He is the much prettier and can be much more charming. And he can do that thing of being sultry and sexy. (Gozde: You mean like this?:)



You’re sexy, Daniel. Come on. Own it.

I can’t!

Gozde: And we agree. You'll do but we'd choose Rob for sure)

Yet in Equus you have a nude scene eight times a week. You’re flashing around your Elder Wand for all the world to see.

But I don’t know how to be sexy. Rob can just sort of stand there and look at something and start to smolder. And I just can’t do that. I’m a natural fidget.

Los Angeles Times did a profile on Bill Condon and Rob had a couple of quotes in the article. Here's the excerpt:

To bring such heightened material to the screen, Condon said he looked to both Vincente Minnelli and Alfred Hitchcock, hewing to tradition for Bella and Edward's wedding and honeymoon, skewing more graphic when depicting Bella's pregnancy, which is destroying her from the inside out. Through a combination of prosthetics and CG, Condon transforms his dewy brunet into a gaunt, skeletal version of herself.

"She needed to look like she's dying or the story doesn't make sense," Pattinson said. "It was great that he went there." (Tink: He SO went there. Shockingly so. It's perfect.)

Pattinson says he felt a kinship with Condon from the moment the director came to visit the 25-year-old actor while he was shooting the period love story "Water for Elephants" in Los Angeles.

"I had my hair cut really short, and he said, 'Oh, you should have your hair like this in the 'Twilight' movies.' I thought, 'OK, I already like you," Pattinson said with a laugh. (Tink: *scowl* I'm not even going to get all book-anal right now because Edward's BD hair was better than I thought it would be. It was sexy! HE was Mr. Sexy.)

"Especially since so many people worried about my hair. It was all they cared about. The hair and a six-pack." (Tink: Ok, Rob...I don't care one bit about the six-pack but the hair is a sensitive topic. That's why you keep cutting it and resisting the sex hair, isn't it? You like to torture us and you don't like trademarks. So stubborn. *pouts*)

 Robert Pattinson doesn't suck

Question: How do you stop a mob of unruly tweens?

Answer: You don't.

On the morning of Nov 10, 3,000 Twilight fans tried to rush their way into the Stonestown Galleria, all for a chance to meet Robert Pattinson. In the ensuing chaos, several young'uns got trampled, one girl allegedly broke her nose, and almost everyone was turned away. (I'm guessing that last bit hurt the most of all.)

For the uninitiated, Pattinson stars as vampire heartthrob Edward in the film adaptation (out Nov 21) of Stephenie Meyer's ludicrously popular book series. The actor's previous credits include a (spoiler alert!) tragic turn as Cedric Diggory inHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), but his OMFG-level success seems to have popped up overnight.

When I met Pattinson in San Francisco later that same Monday, the mood was substantially more subdued.

It turns out that, in many ways, he's a lot like Edward. No, he doesn't sparkle in the sunlight, but he is pretty damn charming. And like his vampiric counterpart, Pattinson's just trying to be a normal guy. Maybe Twilight wasn't the best project to choose, but back when he signed up for the role, the actor didn't quite know what he was in for.

"I went into it having absolutely no idea what it was," he admitted, "and then shot it having pretty much no idea. I mean, some people turned up to the set occasionally, but I kind of expected that. I knew it was a popular book."

What Pattinson didn't know was the level to which certain Twilight fans have devoted their lives — nay, their souls — to the series. They're called Twilighters, and they descended in droves on this year's Comic-Con in San Diego. It was the actor's first encounter with the fandom.

"The word 'twilight' got projected on the wall and they just screamed for a 45-minute press conference, the entire time just screaming and screaming," he recalled. "Up until that point I wasn't really expecting anything."

Even after the eardrum-killing experience, Pattinson's still adjusting to life in the spotlight. Speaking to him, it's clear his down-to-earth demeanor is the real thing. He's doing his best to be no different than the rest of us — and he swears the same goes for Edward. That whole vampire thing, it's merely incidental.

"I never saw him as a vampire," Pattinson said. "You just have to commit to saying, OK, [you're] going to live forever, you're a thousand times stronger and faster than a human being, and then you have to drink blood in some form or another — and just ignore the fact that it's a mystical thing, and imagine you're a human who had to live like that."

Fair enough, if not a bit unconventional. Though gaining popularity, the idea of a normal vampire — Joe the Vampire, if you will — is a relatively recent phenomenon. Pattinson concedes that his Edward isn't the mirror image of Meyer's.

"Elements of the character in the book, I thought, girls wouldn't find that attractive," he said. "Being too polite and being too much of a security blanket is just not sexy at all. And so, I kind of strayed a little bit in the movie away from being too gentlemanly."

A sexier, more uninhibited Edward? I doubt the fans will mind. Besides, he's still a vampire, regardless of where Pattinson decides to take the role. What is it about bloodsucking fiends, anyway? Why did Buffy fall hard for the eternally brooding Angel? What does True Blood's Sookie Stackhouse see in the uber-dull Bill?

"It's all to do with being seduced," Pattinson posits. "It's not really to do with brute force. Plus, there aren't that many supernatural things that can be attractive. You can't really have a sexy zombie."

Zombie Strippers excluded, that's probably true, but I'm still not sure I'm satisfied. Oh, well. I don't have to understand the vampire crush to know that they're hot, just as I don't need to be under Pattinson's mystical thrall to get his appeal. I mean, seriously, have you seen his hair?
