*NEW* Robert Pattinson & Uma Thurman First Still From "Bel Ami" & News About "Bel Ami" At Cannes

UPDATED: Protagonist Films (the site where the still is from) will be promoting "Bel Ami" at Cannes. So does this mean Rob will be attending this year? Filming for "Water for Elephants" is suppose to commence 22 May 2010 and Cannes runs from 12 to 23 May. Could he fit it in? Guess we'll just have to wait and see. For now I'm so happy that "Bel Ami" is going to Cannes.

This is getting a BIG OH HOT DAMN Warning!!!
THUD!! This movie is gonna KILL ME!!

HOLY HOLY SHIT!!!

This is what I was hoping for. Oh. Not the hot nekky stuff. That's a given. And yes, it will be rated R. It's an R rated story made in Europe where they're not afraid to depict human sexuality on the big screen. Here in America? Well. There's a school of thought that says, we don't have penises here which is why we cannot show them in the movies. But word has it, they do have them in Europe and therefore, they can and do. And no, I don't think The Big Pretty is going to be making his film debut just yet, but it wouldn't surprise me at all someday if Rob went full frontal. Not at all (he was nude on that Little Ashes set; in front of the mirror and up on that rooftop with Javier. They just didn't show us. But yeah, he's already dropped trou. He may very well again one day)
But I'd be bringing extra panties to the theatre anyway ladies
(actually. if the theatres are smart and looking to make more $$$.
They'll have kiosks set up in the lobbies selling them). But this isn't what I want to be talking about (then shut up about it and get to your point)...

If this is true guys, I am so EXCITED!!!

The original release date for this was somewhere in the early months of February to what, April of 2011?
The FIRST thing that happens once a film is green lit, is to set the release date (put in on the studio's calender) and then EVERYTHING from that moment forward, works towards THAT date.

If a finished film get pushed back, a delay in the release date? That is usually an indication that there is something wrong with the film. But...

If a film is moved forward, if it is released BEFORE it's original release date and (this is the important part), if that release date is changed to November or December, then that is almost always an indication that the studio thinks they've got a winner on their hands that can then compete in the upcoming awards season (Golden Globes in January/SAGS in February/
Oscars in March).

You guys. If this is true, if they've moved this up to December, this is VERY GOOD NEWS INDEED for this film. This is what I've been waiting for.

If this film is good, with now 10 nominees for Best Picture...it's got a shot. I would also think it might also contend in other catagories such as...costume design, art direction (period pieces usually do well in these two catagories), cinematography, musical score, editing, adapted screenplay and the one I've had a hunch about since day one...Best Supporting Actress for Kristin Scott Thomas. She's got the best female role in the story. And she was robbed of a nomination in 2008 for "I've Loved You So Long". Her nomination was a lock, but then she didn't get it. Alot of times when that happens, the Academy tries to make it up the next time that actor gives a worthy performance. Also...

In Warren Beatty's Shampoo (1975), a modern day retelling of Bel Ami, Lee Grant did win the supporting Oscar for the role that Kristin is playing here. If she's nailed it, she could be nominated. As for Rob...

Even if he's great, don't look for a nomination this early in his career. Not impossible, but rare.

I'm not saying any of this is going to happen and I don't want to get anyone's hopes up (although mine are sky high), but if this really is going to get a December release, it's because the studio thinks it can contend for awards. That would be the ONLY reason to release it then because they know that a little period piece (even starring Rob Pattinson) is not going to be a box office blockbuster because it will most likely get swallowed up by the big year end holiday movies.

In other words...
If they really do release this in December, it won't be for the box office. It will be because they think it is a 'prestige' film.

Oh. Let this be true. Let it be December. Please.

TotallyRobbed said...

He might be able to fit Cannes in - I think it was 19 May that he was there last year and he was really busy and between filming NM and Remember Me - and it was his birthday month too. But it will be very tiring, so many interviews in Cannes sandwiched between 2 long flights ....

nikola6 said...

Now it's going to Cannes? Oh guys. This seals it. The studio thinks they've got a winner. Doesn't mean that they do. The critics could still trash it, but the studio is willing to take a chance with it at Cannes and hopefully, with a December release. And...

If they didn't think that Rob delivered, they wouldn't be doing this. And yes...

He can fit Cannes in, but it'll be a tight squeeze; a day of travel, a day there and a day back. He'd miss three more days of pre-production and they'd have to screen it earlier in the festival. He cannot miss the first day of shooting WFE. Unless he's not on the call sheet and that is HIGHLY unlikely.

I am OVER THE MOON right now!

Sorry Jizz. You asked me to go comment on the 'Mexico'? thread. Sorry. But this one stopped me in my tracks.

Nik, I understand your reasoning about Rob being too young in his career to get an Oscar nomination but Anna Kendrick did get one for Up in the Air so I guess it's possible.

Didn't you also say that there's a lot to do in pre-production of a movie? If so it might be difficult for Rob to make it to Cannes.

WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone said...

@nikola6 Thanks for all the valuable professional info! I'll keep my fingers crossed for a December release and the film being presented at Cannes. I have a hunch this is going to be a winner. I've always loved the books, and the characters are all fascinating, and I've now read the script and OMG.. I'm sure Rob can pull it off. It's a very demanding role, a mature, adult role with great complexity. The whole cast is amazing. I trust Rob 100%. He's going to be great. And I know Declan through his directing various Shakespeare's plays which I saw in my local theater - and he's fantastic. I'm sure Rob has made a very wise choice. I expect critics wanting to bash him if they can, but it will more difficult this time - great directors, great cast, I hope they won't dare to use the same despicable excuses as they did in RM. I hope it's a winner. But I definitely have a good feeling about this after reading the script.

I'm so excited about this movie, it's gonna be awesome! I hope that Rob goes to Cannes because do you remember how hot he looked last year?? Damn I'm still panting LOL
And that picture... He looks so sexy and devious, me likey!

nikola6 said...

Oh hell. I just thought of something...

If this is really good and it gets screened by the media before release (and the good ones do so that the 'buzz', the 'word of mouth' can begin to spread) and if he's as fuckhawt sexy in it as we're all expecting he will be. Guess what comes out in early December?

People's Sexiest Man Alive.

They wanted to give it to him last year, but wiser heads prevailed. But this is his first major role in which he's not playing a teenager and/or college student. He's a grown man in this one, playing opposite actress (sexy, critically acclaimed actresses) many years older than him (and right now, younger men and older women are seen as a fuckhawt sexy). If he holds the screen with them like I think he's gonna and this thing is as sexed fueled as it looks to be, then this could change people's and the media's perception of him. And People might think, he is ready for it and if he nails this role, then yeah, there will still be backlash (there will always be some backlash), but not enough. Many more (besides TWI/Edward/Rob fans) might feel that he is deserving of it.

And the truth is...
People wants to give this to him before this Saga is completed because they know that to put him on that cover, is just simply, a license to print money. Also...

This wouldn't have ANYTHING to do with Twilight as it would have last year coinciding with the release of New Moon. By December of this year, Eclipse will six months in the past and Breaking Dawn not expected for another year.
Very good timing indeed.

Yeah. I'm a thinkin'.

(oh don't do that. you'll hurt yourself)

all that j*zz said...

nikola6 said...

I promise Jizz, before I sign off, I will go look at that other thread.

And jmm4832...

The difference between Anna's performance and Rob's would be, her's was supporting and his will be the lead. And THAT'S a big difference. Very few actors under the age of 25 have EVER been nominated for Best Actor.

Had he lived, James Dean would have been 25 when nominated Best Actor for "East Of Eden" and 26 when nominated the same for "Giant". Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson) and Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain) were both nominated Best Actor at 26. Peter O'Toole (Lawrence Of Arabia) at
27. Adrian Brody (The Pianist) is actually the youngest to win Best Actor at 29. I don't know. How do I know all of this shit, yet I couldn't learn algegra? It can happen for young actors in their 20's to be nominated for Best Actor, but it's rare. And by next year's Oscars, Rob will still be just 24. If he were nominated, he just might be the youngest in modern times AND it would have to be one hell of a performance. He'd have to hit it clear out of the park.

But seriously, if they do release this in December, it's because they think they've got a Best Picture nominee on their hands. It's the ONLY reason to release it then.

And yes...he's got lots of pre-production for WFE, in particular, spending time with those critters so that everyone is comfortable with one another on camera. The costume fittings and first run throughs of the script, he most likely will be doing this week until he heads for Chicago, I imagine late afternoon on Wednesday. If he left as late as 5 pm, with the time change, that would put him in Chicago by around midnight and in bed by one (no fooling around you two. you gotta be up early in the morning. oh allright. maybe a 'good morning and a how do you do' first thing in the morning in the shower. But make it snappy!). Then if he turned around and went back to LA Thursday after the taping, with picking up 2 hours, he'd be back early evening and could be back in pre-production Friday morning. Well. I know I'm being anal here, but he's gonna need every minute he can find ESPECIALLY if he does want to go to Cannes with Bel Ami. And why wouldn't he? The thing is...

Unlike Summit which distributed
"Remember Me" (so they made sure he got to Cannes even though he was still filming NM), WFE has absolutely no investment in Bel Ami and so they could put the kibosh on him going if they wanted to. If they think he cannot spare those three days and that by doing so, he will not be ready to go on that first day of shooting, they'll probably say no. And truth is...

The actual work (which he would engaged in on WFE) is more important than the glamour (the spotlight, the screaming fans, the crush of the media) of promoting another (Bel Ami) and Rob's a pro and he would agree. But...we'll just have to wait and see.

And yeah Rum...

I am really excited about this news tonight. Like I said, from day one, I had this feeling about Kristin Scott Thomas and this role. Another...wait and see.

nikola6 said...

Well. With the film having wrapped in early/mid April and the festival in mid/late May, were talking about a month or so and so, no. That is not enough time to do the post production on a film. It takes months to edit and score a film (fortunately, with this story taking place in the 19th century, they'll be no time consuming CGI). So...

No. This is not a full screening and of course there is no way for the film to compete in the competition for the festival awards. This may or may not be a screening of 'select' footage in order to help secure financial backing for distribution in foreign markets. This is what Cannes is all about (and Sundance too); films looking for U.S. (which this film doesn't have to worry about) and foreign distribution. That is the sole purpose of the festival. This is the nuts and bolts of the movie business. And then just for the hell of it, they throw the international movie star party of the year for it.

This was the sole reason why Rob was in Cannes last year. It wasn't to have his picture taken by the papparazzi of the world or to walk the famous red carpet into the screening or Inglorius Basterds (that was the glamour part of it all). He was sent there by Summit in the capacity of an executive producer to secure those foreign distribution rights for Remember Me. A movie which had yet to shoot a single foot of film. Rob went to 'pitch' this story to the money men and since the film is playing around the world, apparently, he secured those distribution rights. And the producers want him to do it again for this film. Why wouldn't they? He is the biggest 'young' movie star in the world who has proven that he can sell movie tickets all over the world.

If they do bring some footage with them, it would be, yes, to show to potential backers, but also...if they think they've got a good film on their hands, to start the...buzz. And if in fact this film has been moved up to December, the industry (Hollywood) will sit up and take notice. Because the industry will also know that the reason this studio wants to move this release date up is because they think they've got an awards contender on their hands and therefore, the interest in the film just got a whole lot more...interesting.

Did any of that make sense? I've been up all night. Ain't insomnia a bitch and I'm starting to get fuzzy. Er...fuzzier.

I'm telling you guys that he may have a Best Picture contender on his hands and all you can do is drool over one photo?

I know that this is the fun and games part of all of this and I sure as hell enjoy it too, but did anyone catch that something really important may have just happened with his career because of this (oh let us pray) annoucement?

This is potentially BIG! HUGE! And seems to have gone over some of your heads. I know he's pretty. I know we'd all like him to make love to us. But guys...just stop for one second. Just one. This could be IT for him. The movie, the role that will ensure that he's not gonna get pigeon holed by Twilight.

I never thought he was going to be, but I thought it might take him a little bit longer to break away from it.

Stop being fangirls for just one second and think about what this might mean for his career........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Okay. That's enough. Resume drooling.

Sorry. Far be it from me to tell anyone what kind of fans they should be. I guess everyone comes at this from their own angle. You guys are fine. I'm just tired and trying to give up smoking and I'm a little cranky. Sorry again.

Nice still - whets the appetite..lol

Just to clarify - a 'deliver' date is not a 'release' date. It does mean they might have the option to do limited screenings for Oscar contention, but doesn't necessarily mean it will release n December. Re Cannes: they are still in the timeframe for the 'director's cut' contractually, so don't know how much footage they could show.

@Nik: They've got a lot of presales already - only nagging thing is NO distributor named for US as yet.....hope they'll announce at Cannes if not before.

Thank you Kate!
Did someone say Uma is in this photo? Huh? Itsallnatural he has already had some pretty entertaining commentary on the film. It should be fun to see what else pops into his head - cuz you know it will come right outta his mouf.

Nik - I'm still more excited about WFE. It's nice to think Rob could get accolades for his performance and hard work paying off. Either way we'll give them to him ;).

It's RPatz, sex, money, and power. I'm buying it.

What a sexy picture. Is Uma as tall as Rob?

I would find it very strange indeed if, given Rob's fans and popularity, no one would realize even financially how wise would be the decision to distribute BelAmi here.

@AP wow, thank you for the information, I'm impressed. I guess it's very early yet to have any idea. I hope BA will do great anyway!!

AP said...

@Jane: Uma is 6' tall, so just about.

@Rum: you're welcome. You can always count on me for the endless stats..lol

Gotta run...

OMG - this is going to be so good. Wow I hope the director makes this a superb movie and they do release it before the year is out so it can be considered for the Academy Awards.

in the movie business , a movie can close sales before it was shoot because of the star /the director,in this case its Rob name....

RM is not shown yet in Japan, South Korea and China which is huge huge market.....

I just had a nap. Well. Okay. I just had a really BIG coke and I closed my eyes for a few minutes so I think I've recharged a few brain cells and maybe now I can converse with some clarity. Nah. Probably not.

And AP...
You are absolutely right about 'deliver' not meaning release date. But in my bleary eyed, sleep deprived state, I just saw "December" and shit my pants.

It's just that this is what I've been waitng and hoping for, a December release on this thing (even if it's just a week long release to qualify it for the Oscars and then goes wide in January or February). And I still think this is a possibility.

I never understood this May release date. Release this little costume drama at the beginning of the summer popcorn movie season, letting it get swallowed up by the blockbusters? Huh? I always thought the 'quieter' months of January or February would be more appropriate for a film like this.

But my hopes are still high that the studio is just as high on this and we see a year end release (even if it's just that qualifying week) on this thing.

As for a U.S. distributor...
The reason I said that wouldn't be a problem for this film is because, it's starring Rob Fucking Pattinson and so it will get a U.S. distributor. I mean, if everyone passes (and why would everyone pass on one of the hottest tickets in town?), hell, Summit could distribute it. They've moved up in the 'prestige' catagory with their first Oscar winner, "The Hurt Locker." Maybe they're looking for another potential Oscar nominated picture.

Hey. I just thought of something. Is this a foreign film? Meaning foreign for America? And I don't mean foreign language. Is it? Why don't I know this? Why? Do you have to know everything? Well. I enjoy not being in the dark about something I'm interested in and I'm interested in this film. Okay. I'm talking to myself again, huh?

Well. Is it?

And I'm sorry. I can't remember who asked and too tired to scroll down the page and look, but someone made mention that they thought his performance as Jacob in WFE would be THE performance to maybe get him that Oscar recognition. Did I get that right? Well. That may be just what happens.

But alot of times an actor will give an acclaimed performance that gets ignored at award time. And then, the very next acclaimed performance he gives, is the one that gets the recognition. And that's the way it could work out with these two films. The odds that Rob would be recognized at just 24 with a Best Actor nod (no matter how good he might be here), are extremely low. It's kind of like the Academy wants the young uns' to pay their dues a bit.

Okay then. Calmed down. December not a sure thing, but...still hopeful.

nikola6 said...

And guys?

All that stuff I peed my pants over earlier (liar. you said you shit 'em. shuttup)...

Just put all that in your pocket for a spell. If this doesn't get a release in December (even just a qualifying week), then it will most likely be an early 2011 release and most likely forgotten for the next award season of 2012.

Sorry I jumped the gun there.

@Nikola6 : I just wanted to thank you for your comments here. Having somebody like you, with both the knowledge and the eloquence, gives somebody like me a whole new insight and makes it so much more exciting. Here's wishing they really do release in December!

Cindygal said...

Hello Carina, Welcome, this is the best place to be! :-)

jessegirl said...

Well, seeing as it is May 4, 9:22pm my time, and you've all had your say, I can safely have mine and be ignored. I'm looking forward to that (no sarcasm intended).

I know, I made a quick fangirl comment a bit ago, at which point I'd not read the thread at all. Interesting as they often are, I'm just too whacked out to give all the comments the attention they deserve...

Now, I'm glad we have a few people who seem to be able to speak with some knowledge of the industry, how it works, and how studios place the release date if they think they have a winner, etc.

And, I absolutely back Rob in his creative endeavours and know that he has the talent to become a great actor. Anyone who has read many of my comments knows that.

But the whole thing has given me a case of despondency. Okay, okay too young to get Best Actor nods--plus Twibaggage--Okay Dec. releases, Cannes' prof. screenings and what they mean--buzz, distribution--Okay all the political and industrial manoeuverings and intrigue---Yeah, yeah I get it.

But after RM was put on trial and burned at the stake, effectively destroying its chances for any award recognition, I just don't care. I JUST DON'T CARE!

Few of you--even those of you who said you loved it and have written about it--have--to my knowledge--put yourselves out there to let the world know you think RM is worthy of these big awards.

Why not? Hopeless cause? You don't believe it IS worthy? You're worn out?

Let me see, last year we had Precious, Oprah's baby. Hmmm. We had Avatar, Hmm. Hurt Locker. Hmmm.
Oh and let's not forget the forgettable George Clooney effort and the saccharine Blindside.
None of them affected me much. What about you?

Do you, now, in hindsight, think any of them are so fantastic? Do you mull over them, repeat the scenes in your head? Do you FEEL them in your bones? Do they stay with you long after viewing? Do you want to view them repeatedly? Do you notice new things if you have watched them more than once? Do any of them have meaning, with a capital M, for you?

I can say no to all those questions. But with Remember Me I can say yes to all those questions. And that is the mark of a great film.

Everyone here has read my many thoughts on this film; and I admit that when I love something, I LOVE it. (Oh but all of you know about obsession; that's why you're all here.)

But a world weariness and great sadness comes over me when I realize that even here RM is not considered worthy of world recognition and acclaim. That Blindside or Up in the Air get it.

Mark my words. In the future the world will not only remember Remember Me, it will call it a classic.

And not only the damn critics and stupid Twifangirls and equally stupid males ready to dismiss it as a chick flick--which itself is insulting--but even many of you, right here, have put RM to bed and are looking to the next RP film to make him, whether it be BA or WFE.

They may not be good movies, those coming down the pike, even with drool-worthy Rob seducing the heck out of everyone and with award-winning actors as his colleagues. And with good stories. Oh, they probably will be good, but we don't really know. Not yet.

What we do know, now, is that RM is a fantastic film, despite being indie small, panned, poor BO domestically. We know. Dont' we?

I do. This is the one.
Maybe not the only one.
But THE one.

Had my say. And I know you can't hear me.

CeeCee said...

jessiegirl... I <3 you. :) I totally agree with you too. You know me as Chris on other remember me comment sections. I saw something about RM on my email alerts and followed them here and I find you! *g* I know it's disheartening to know that RM has already been forgotten even by Rob's most devoted fans. It's kind of inevitable I think since RM is not a feel good movie that you can be comfortable just squeeing over and I think most of the fans just want to get away from reality and squee over a hot dude. I've basically given up trying to find a place where people want to do more than that and then if I run across a thread where someone actually wants to talk and think about what Rob is trying to say with his films I am pleasantly surprised.
