A year ago I couldn't get a date

Toronto Star Interview with Rob:
Twilight star takes a bite out of fame

For someone at the centre of an ever-escalating fan frenzy that is now bordering on the hysterical, Twilight star Robert Pattinson seems very much at ease. (Gozde: BORDERING? :-)

The British actor's self-deprecating sense of humour and refusal to take the phenomenon seriously is helping him deal with the besotted adoration of millions of teenage girls around the world who are enraptured by the tortured romance between a brooding, beautiful vampire and a mortal schoolgirl.

"It's absolutely nuts," he says, shaking his head in bemusement and laughing. "It's just crazy. A year ago I couldn't get a date and now the whole world's turned over and I can have any 14-year-old girl I want."

He is joking, but the fervour will only increase when Twilight is released on Friday. Assuming it is the success it is expected to be, Pattinson is already signed for two sequels, ensuring that for the next few years he will be one of the world's leading heartthrobs.

He had been torn between an acting career and going to university (Gozde: he was going to university?) but the Harry Potter roles convinced him to stick with acting, although he spent the best part of the next two years unemployed.

His agent persuaded him to visit Los Angeles to audition for several films, one of which was Twilight. He performed a love scene with the already-cast Stewart and she persuaded Hardwicke that he was the right actor to portray Edward.

Pattinson was no so sure.

"I'd read the book and I couldn't really picture myself in the part as this handsome, perfect guy," he said.

"I thought it would be impossible to play him because he's basically an enigma. I didn't want to play a stereotype vampire so I sort of broke down every vampire element of him and tried to relate to it in a human way. I tried to humanize it as much as possible."

It seems ironic now, but when he was announced as the actor who was to portray Edward on screen, fans were furious.

"People sent me hate mail and the Internet was full of messages from Twilight fans who didn't want me. They said I looked like a bum," he recalled with a laugh. "But Stephenie Meyers helped me out by giving me her seal of approval, then the trailer came out and everything turned around. I started getting love letters and fan mail instead of hate mail.

Pattinson was talking in suite at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. He was sporting a several-day stubble and was casually dressed in jeans and an open short-sleeve shirt over a T-shirt.

He talks quietly and modestly and has a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous smile, which makes it easy to see the attraction he holds for teenage girls.

After filming Twilight on location in Portland, Ore., he returned to Los Angeles and has been there for the past seven months, learning to drive, exploring the city and attempting to adjust to the cultural differences, particularly the American attitude toward alcohol.

"It's a very different culture," he said.

"There really isn't a pub scene in L.A., and people here don't understand how it's such a normal thing to drink in pubs in London.

"They think it's very strange and there's such a stigma attached to it here, but it just seems normal to me."

An accomplished musician, heoccasionally takes his guitar to open-mike nights in L.A., although it is becoming more difficult now that he is recognized wherever he goes.

"I did a couple of gigs, which people filmed and put on the Internet and it kind of ruined the whole experience for me," he said. "So I've kind of stopped now and I think I'm going to wait for all this fuss to die down before I start doing live gigs again."

(Pattinson's song "Never Think," appears on the best-selling Twilight soundtrack.)

Scripts are pouring in and he will soon be seen as the painter Salvador Dali in Little Ashes and in January will begin filming the romantic drama Parts Per Billion, portraying Dennis Hopper's son.

In the meantime he is becoming more famous as the build-up to the release of Twilight reaches its peak.

His only previous exposure to fan frenzy was after he appeared in the two Harry Potter films.

"I was a bit surprised that people recognized me and wanted my autograph but it didn't last very long and was nothing like this," Pattinson said.

"This is just bizarre."

I laughed so hard when I saw this on the imdb board. His sense of humor freaking kills me. This kid needs to do a "regular guy" comedy and soon, like a really funny not like dark comedy but just laugh out loud role. He is quite the wit.

Yes, Rob will mos def have to do some kind of comedy to utilize his snarky Brit humor. I love how he points out the unptightness of Americans and attitudes towards alcohol.

Rob could teach Americans a lot about letting loose and giving it up. I would love to see him opposite Eddie Izzard, Ricky Gervais or John Cleese.

LOL - I love his humor, It is often missed and mis-interpreted... He is very witty and quite quick, he would be amazing in a comedy role where he could just have fun with it...
I wait in every interview to hear him say Bizarre, I just love it - LOL...

I just watched that Philly interview again I adore how out of it he is. I love how he got the fourth of July all mixed up than says "in England on the 4th of July we sacrifice Americans" Oh just want to know how many 12 yr old hands went up * pick me, Rob, I will die for you*

Too funny this one. Alright gotta get back to reality. Talk to you sweet ladies later.

LOL Rob tends to get away with a lot with his humor and wit. If, he were American, things would get misconstrued and he's be branded a perv. Gotta love him!

I do!

...and the rest of us, too, honey-bunch...

so Rob will be on the Jay Leno show on the 26th. I wanted Conan cause he is my fave Ginger Kid, but Leno will do.

Ellie said...

I agree, Dani~
Conan's not stuffy like Leno.
I think he would help us see a more relaxed and candid Rob than Leno would. My dad used to love Leno; he's not "cutting edge".

I want Rob!
Ok I will finish my sentence...
I want Rob to go on the Craig Ferguson Late Late show, That guy flippin cracks me up... Ellen should be fun too, Isnt she on the 21st? Good Times Ahead...

Dani said...

Craig Ferg is funny I will say but Conan is my boy.

Yes Rob will be on Ellen the 21st but the taping will be early in the week I would think.

I might go get some Twitickets today.

Ellen will most likely be pre-taped since Rob and Kristen will be in NYC for in the later part of next week.

I'm excited they will be on The Today Show. Let's hope it's a good interview. You know fans will show up to that one for sure! I hope Rockefeller plaza is ready for it ;) They better get their barricades set up just in case.

Kristen on Letterman should be fun, I hope she isn't a nervous wreck for it.

I'm also happy he will be on Leno - at least it's one late night show! Although I agree Conan or Craig may have been better...

K Stew should loosen up a bit for Letterman he is more her style though a bit dry. So I hope its a good interview, she doesnt have to prove she is smart and mature. We already know! So losen up and have fun!

Rob will be a riot as usual. He can always be counted on for a good laugh and inteview. Wonder what Jay will say, quote Robs goofy answers like the 12 yr old virgin thing. Oh I want Rob to say that again, so damn funny.

My favorite late night show is Jimmy Kimmel. Used to be Conan but Kimmel is just too funny :)

I think Jay-Rob will be one of those weird interviews where Jay knows nothing about him and will ask "so, did you know about the book before you auditioned?". Sigh... Still it's good exposure :-)

This picture just kills me!! haha When I saw him put his legs up like that and sit cross legged on the couch I couldn't stop smiling. Some things he does are just beyond cute, like something a little boy would do and yet hilarious at the same time...

I hope he can start playing again. It seems as if it meant a lot to him, to go do those gigs. Hopefully, the fans will respect that because I'm betting he finds himself playing live on youtube again he will definitely quit for good.

Dani-I also love Conan. That would have been so much fun, something tells me Conan would have had a sort of competition for the weirdest hair with him.

Dani said...

Awe when he is all pretzeled up on that couch it is so freakin' cute!

Goz youre right Kimmel would be a riot. Whats with the talk show circut not picking up on Rob earlier. He is hot right now. I really hope Jay does his homework.

Stella-D I emailed you I was going to go food shopping but my kid fell asleep. But I wrote you a love note cause your saucy and I adore ya.

Ellen does a ton of pretapes, so, who knows when the actual taping will be. I do know that a whole taping only takes about an hour and half. It's fast and intense and Ellen is kick ass. I would kill to dance with Rob in the hot seat.

Ellie said...

So happy to be bombarded with Rob all week; hope I can keep up with all the media.

Ellie said...

Hope he can, too...

Amy said...

estrellas!, I second that!!! I really hope when he goes back to London he can get out and play again :) He obviously loves playing & singing and to have that taken away because people decided to video tape him would be a crushing blow! I know I would be hurt by that happening. I totally feel for him when he says that once it's out there people have free range to criticize and that is truly awful, especially when you are not expecting it. He had no idea he was being taped and then to find those videos online...yeah that would suck.

I seriously think being home in the UK would be the best thing for him after all this craziness. Let the guy take a break, enjoy the holidays with his family and collect his thoughts about what the next little while is going to be like for him.

Will all these interviews be on "you Tube"???
Although I'm presuming you lovely ladies will have them up here too !!;-)

Ellie said...

Much needed rest is in the horizon for him, I hope.
Preferably with me and a soft pillow...wait, I'm the pillow!

Amy---said British boy needs to go home...absence makes the heart grow fonder. Rob should be in London!

Goz is on fire---woop, woop!

Amy said...

Totally agree w/ you Lynn!! I mean don't get me wrong, I do love that he comes to North America for work and to do rounds of press, but I sooooo don't want the guy to move to LA full time. And I'm glad he said he doesn't want to. Hollyweird will just ruin his awesomeness with their constant need for rumors, lies and phoniness!! Hell it's already starting.

RP needs to be in London. It would just be better if he is there :)

Amy said...

Hahaha I am really behind the past few days! What is wrong with me? lol

Goz you rock :)

Lynn said...

I know! I just can never understand the allure of living in LA full time. Rob clearly dislikes it and especially with the power of the paps and TMZ following celebs everywhere.

London seems to be more relaxed and with all the scrutiny with Princess Diana, fandom seems more under control. I could be wrong---I don't live there. But, there seems to be more anonimity there for Rob.

Dani said...

I imagine it will all make it to youtube Kate so no worries and Goz or I will post em as they come.

Lynn what is it with people and the allure of LA? I mean its not that great to live there from what I have heard. Rob can't go anywhere and have a good time without being branded an alcoholic. Its insane.

I really hope when they more filming here he is able to fey out and be normal for a while do some live shows again. Cause no one has a clue who these people are in Portland.
