Excerpt from Rolling Stone, 'Good Time': How Two Brothers Scuzzed Up Robert Pattinson and Made a Gritty Classic:

Robert Pattinson can't explain it – he just knew.

It was early 2015, and the Twilight star was now three years removed from Edward Cullen, the iconic vampire heartthrob who made the British actor's name but had also painted him into a corner. Looking to break free, the then-29-year-old star began seeking out daring dramas and working with filmmakers like David Cronenberg, David Michôd, Werner Herzog and James Gray. He was determined to prove that he wasn't just a YA pinup. And in the midst of that reinvention, Pattinson stumbled upon a promotional still for Heaven Knows What, a gritty, unsparing 2014 New York indie about a homeless woman ravaged by heroin addiction.

"It really struck me," he says softly, sitting in a Beverly Hills hotel suite, remembering the moment. "You normally see really striking imagery in a lot of European movies. But it's rare to see that coming out of American independents."

Pattinson knew nothing about the movie – he hadn't even seen a trailer. Nor had he seen any of the previous films by its directors, the brothers Josh and Benny Safdie. But, looking at that image, he knew: He had to be in business with these filmmakers. So Pattinson emailed them.

"When I like something, I get unbelievably enthusiastic," the actor explains with a warm, ingratiating smile. "The first email I sent was like, ‘I'm completely certain that we're supposed to do something together.' And they're like, ‘Have you seen any of our stuff?' I said, ‘Nope, don't need to see it. I know.'"

Robert Pattinson had a Good Time with directors Josh and Benny Safdie at the A24 title’s New York premiere Tuesday night.

The drama stars Pattinson as a small-time criminal who attempts to race against the clock to break his brother out of prison after a botched bank robbery.
After shooting the adrenaline-filled film, “I’m more confident in my body than I used to be,” Pattinson told The Hollywood Reporter at the SVA Theatre. “It’s something about growing up as an English person — you’re very physically inhibited. I’ve done a few movies where I’ve actively tried to be more physical and break through my levels of inhibition and self-righteousness. It’s difficult. But as soon as I saw their last movie [Heaven Knows What] — it’s so kinetic — I just knew I wanted to do something with them."

Robert Pattinson is earning rave reviews for his intense and electrifying performance in A24’s crime thriller, “Good Time.” Under the helm of directors and brothers Josh and Benny Safdie, the “Twilight” star hides his dashing good looks to portray a grimy, bleached blond, goatee-sporting, crook from Queens, New York, who embarks on a mission to bail his mentally impaired brother (played by co-director Benny) out of prison after a failed robbery attempt. While taking on the demanding role, Pattinson said the experience has helped him mature into a commanding actor.

“I think I’m more confident now; this was a challenging role and I learned a lot about my abilities as an actor,” Pattinson told Variety at the film’s New York premiere on Tuesday evening, held at the School of Visual Arts Theatre. “Every single time I get to do another movie, I get a little more confident. You always want to grow in some way and challenge yourself. I feel like this one has helped me become a better actor.”

Critics have no doubt that Pattinson has developed into a masterful dramatic actor. He and the “Good Time” creators received a rousing six-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival last May where the movie first screened for an audience. The picture — out in theaters on Friday — currently holds a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“The writing in this — the dialogue felt so real and different,” explained the 31-year-old British star on the red carpet. “It’s set in New York and I’ve been here in New York a million times, but it just felt alien to me. There was something different and original about the characters and the story. I immediately knew the world of the performance that I wanted to do and I knew the energy I wanted when I saw Josh and Benny’s work. This was special.”

Ever since his teen heartthrob days, Robert Pattinson has rarely been able to escape the prying eyes of fans and photographers. So it came as quite a shock to him that he was not once recognized while filming his latest picture “Good Time” on the streets of New York.

“We were shooting so much outside that I literally could not afford for anybody to find out we were shooting a movie the whole time and no one ever did,” the 31-year-old actor related at the film’s New York premiere Tuesday. “After three months of being in New York, literally not a single person even said ‘hi.’”

His role as Connie Nikas, a gritty Queens-born miscreant whose protective impulses toward a mentally challenged brother (Ben Safdie), propels the 100-minute narrative like a runaway F train.

In spite of the character’s shaggy haircut and goatee, Pattinson attributed his ability to go incognito to the attitude he projected while in character, which continued even when cameras weren’t rolling: “If you put a very aggressive energy into the world, people don’t really come up to you.”

Loosely inspired by the early childhood experiences of many of the most infamous dictators of the 20th century, “The Childhood of a Leader” stars Berenice Bejo and Liam Cunningham as an American couple settling into the French countryside at the end of the World War I, at which time the father is involved in the delicate peace negotiations surrounding the Treaty of Versailles. His wife is a devout Christian who struggles with the tantrums of their son (Tom Sweet), an angelic-looking boy whose behaviour becomes increasingly disturbing. Robert Pattinson and Stacy Martin also appear in the film, which also brought Corbet a cash prize in the form of Luigi De Laurentiis award for best debut.

Variety: How did Robert Pattinson get involved?

Corbet: Robert Pattinson is a friend of ours, and we really have a lot of common interests and tastes. He’s really charismatic, and we thought it would be wonderful to apply that charisma to these very early, seemingly unimportant sequences, and only really by the end of the film do you realise how significant they are.

Well I'm disgruntled. Maps To The Stars had a distribution swap from eOne to Focus World and it feels like US Rob fans and Julianne Moore got the shaft.

After winning the best actress award in Cannes for “Maps to the Stars,” Julianne Moore was considered a strong bet in this year’s Oscar race for her turn as a washed-up star in the David Cronenberg drama. But the overdue actress, who has been nominated for four Academy Awards without winning, could be sitting out of awards season.

In a deal that closed last week, Focus World picked up U.S. distribution rights to the Cronenberg drama from Canadian outfit Entertainment One (eOne), sources tell Variety exclusively. “Maps to the Stars” won’t premiere stateside until early 2015.

Focus World is the alternative distribution division of Focus Features, and it hasn’t been decided if the drama will be released on VOD, play in theaters domestically or some combination thereof. “Maps” could get an Oscar qualifying theatrical release at the end of 2014, so that it would at least be eligible for Academy Awards nominations, according to one individual with knowledge of the deal, but a movie with that kind of strategy can sometimes get lost in the slew of December contenders.

“Maps to the Stars” will screen this fall at the Toronto International and New York Film Festivals, which are traditionally launching pads for Oscar contenders. On Sept. 9, Moore is scheduled to appear at a cocktail event following a screening of the film at Toronto.

“Maps to the Stars” premiered at Cannes to mixed reviews, although Moore was singled out by critics as delivering one of the best performances of her career. The film is a dark deconstruction of celebrity culture and co-stars Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams, John Cusack and Robert Pattinson, who previously worked with Cronenberg on “Cosmopolis.” Bruce Wagner (“Wild Palms”) wrote the screenplay.

Co-financed by eOne and Prospero Pictures, “Maps to the Stars” was produced by Prospero’s Martin Katz, SBS Productions’ Saïd Ben Saïd and Michel Merkt. Sentient Entertainment’s Renee Tab and eOne’s Benedict Carver executive-produced the film.

EOne Films International handles worldwide rights to “Maps to the Stars,” and will directly distribute the film in Canada, the U.K., and Australia and New Zealand. The movie opens in Canada on Oct. 31, and will rollout to other regions of the world starting this year.

WME negotiated on behalf of eOne with Anjay Nagpal, SVP, and Gene Kang, VP of Business Affairs, representing Focus World.

Julianne Moore can kiss goodbye to any hopes she was nursing for an Oscar campaign for David Cronenberg's Cannes Best Actress winner "Maps to the Stars," which is set to play Toronto and New York festivals. Canadian distributor eOne was going to distribute the film stateside, but it has now sold U.S. rights not to Universal specialty distributor Focus Features--the arm that would handle an Oscar effort--but Focus World, their digital distribution arm, which plans an early 2015 release.

The entertaining satire of Hollywood boasts a strong cast including Cronenberg fave Rob Pattinson, who canoodles on screen with both an anxiety-ridden movie star (Moore) and the troubled daughter (Mia Wasikowska) of psychotherapist/coach to the stars (John Cusack) and his wife (Olivia Williams), who manages his son's career. Ordinarily you would expect this to have a strong theatrical release, but this kind of movie does well on VOD, with smaller marketing costs.

That's disappointing to say the least. I had hoped Julianne would get a push and we might ride that wave to OscarRob strutting his stuff in support. Oh well....

Variety ‘The Rover’ Premiere: Producer Praises Robert Pattinson as ‘Consummate Actor’
After a starry premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Robert Pattinson, Guy Pearce and director David Michod brought “The Rover” to The Regency Bruin Thursday.

Michod told Variety that he hadn’t been familiar with Pattinson’s previous work. “Rob just came in and did a beautiful audition for me that was both vulnerable and completely alive,” he said.

“This proved that seeing him work with Guy Pearce and Scoot McNairy, we realize he’s a consummate actor,” added producer David Linde. “He’s in the ‘Twilight’ movies and people don’t think of him in this way, but as you see in this movie he’s the real deal.”

For Pattinson, he said his goal is to work with good, ambitious directors. “These roles just don’t come up that often,” he said. “A script like this is so rare, I mean, it’s in the top five scripts I’ve ever read.”

Pattinson plays Rey, a yellow-toothed, simple-minded man who is one of the last survivors in a world 10 years after an economic collapse.

“I like how my character was set up. It was just sort of two really dense dialogue heavy scenes in the midst of almost no dialogue, so it let you be pretty free to do anything with it,” said Pattinson.

And on his character: “I think he’s someone who’s been regarded by absolutely everyone around him of having something wrong with him his whole life and he’s never required to think for himself. So when Erik (played by Pearce) kidnaps/adopts him, it forces him to think, (but) the mechanism of thought is so rusty, he has to kind of force it out and it’s almost like he’s being born again.”

“The Rover” has been described as a post-apocalyptic film, but Michod said, “I actually didn’t want the story be post-apocalyptic, I wanted it to be to the extent, like an apocalypse, as something that wipes everything out.”

“I wanted everything that was wrong in the world to feel directly connected to everything that is wrong in the world today.”

Pearce plays the lead role in the film. “I had to go through a bit of a process with (David Michod) just talking about the character to try and understand it,” he said. “There’s a lot of him that’s kind of gone now. I needed to understand some of the things he had in order to, therefore, lose them.”

Linde said pairing Pearce and Pattinson was really exciting because they are two guys who are in two very different parts of their career. “For Rob, we always felt he was on the cusp of doing very serious and accomplished work, and the idea of a guy who’s been doing it for a while and one who’s really emerging seemed very exciting.”

Producer Liz Watts, Susan Prior, Jaime King, Rami Malek, Claudia Levy, Bar Paly, Catherine Hardwicke, Peter Facinelli also attended the premiere. The party continued at the W Hotel.

This interview with Rob from Associated Press  is a great read with some fantastic quotes from Guy Pearce, David Cronenberg and David Michod.
This was me when I was finished reading it.

For the past year, Robert Pattinson has been trying to disappear. He says he's been actively avoiding having his photo taken, trying to erase a tabloid persona.

"I'm just trying to not be in stupid gossip magazines, basically, and I think the best way to do it is never be photographed ever," says Pattinson. "As I get older, I just get more and more and more self-conscious about getting photographed. I don't know why. I've done it too many times and now I feel like everyone can see through me."

Not being photographed isn't an option for Pattinson at the Cannes Film Festival: The annual Cote d'Azur extravaganza is famous for its walls of photographers and its rabid hunger for celebrity.

But Pattinson has unveiled a new, more mature image of himself at this year's Cannes. He stars in two of the festival's top films: David Michod's lean, dystopian thriller "The Rover" and, in competition, David Cronenberg's dark Hollywood satire "Maps to the Stars." In the latter, he plays a Los Angeles limo driver trying to break into the movie business.

In "The Rover," which opens in the United States on June 13, he gives arguably his best performance yet, playing a bloodied half-wit who travels across a near-future Australian Outback with a terse man bent on revenge (Guy Pearce). With a halting Southern accent, he's a mangy, wounded puppy dog of a man, loyal to his companion.

More than any film before, "The Rover" announces the 28-year-old former "Twilight" star as a talented actor of range, capable of disappearing into a complicated role.

"It's literally exactly what I wanted," Pattinson said of his Cannes, smiling atop the Palais des Festivals.

His performances have been eye-opening for many, including Pattinson's co-stars. "I wasn't aware of what he was capable of," says Pearce. "On the second day, I said to David, 'He's really (expletive) good, isn't he?'"

The new chapter for Pattinson really began with his first collaboration with Cronenberg in the 2012 stylish Don DeLillo adaptation "Cosmopolis." Since then, he says, he's been choosing parts solely by director.

"I sort of had a bit of a list," says Pattinson. "The things I'm going to do next I've said yes to them before I've even seen a script."

Along with Michod ("Animal Kingdom") and Cronenberg, Pattinson has shot movies with Werner Herzog and Anton Corbijn. He's lined up films with Harmony Korine ("Spring Breakers") and Olivier Assayas ("Carlos"). All are widely acclaimed filmmakers who mostly operate far from the mainstream.

"It takes so much of the responsibility off you," says Pattinson. "I don't like the idea of trying to make movies as, like, a vehicle. Also, I don't really know who my audience is. I don't know if I have an audience. Outside of 'Twilight,' I don't know."

"Playing the lead in 'Cosmopolis' was not at the time what he wanted to do," says Cronenberg. "I had to talk him into it. He was really looking forward to playing a smaller role in an ensemble piece. In a way, ('Maps') is kind of a perfect continuation of our relationship, which I really value."

Pattinson auditioned for Michod for "The Rover," though the screenplay's scant backstory made it difficult. Exposition is largely resisted on the characters and the nature of the "collapse" that destroyed Australian currency. Pattinson went in in character.

"But then I had to sort of ask a couple questions half in character at the beginning, like: 'Is he mentally handicapped? Before I completely make a fool out of myself?'" he recalled laughing.

"The second he started doing the character, I was getting excited," says Michod. "I was getting excited about the performance he would give, excited about the character as invented by him and excited by the prospect of taking a possibly very underestimated franchise star and letting him demonstrated what he's actually capable of."

Pattinson says relished playing a more physical part.

"I had done so many parts where I was super still — like the whole of 'Twilight,'" he says. "It's so restrictive. You do something where you have blood all over your face, you can't be expected to fit into any kind of mold."

Drafted into a global franchise at a young age, Pattinson has previously said he wasn't even sure if acting was meant for him. For one of the more famous people on the planet, he doesn't exude confidence or self-seriousness, but rather has a squinty, bemused manner and is quick to laugh at himself. Now, he acknowledges his confidence is growing.

"I'm very, very good at lower expectations," says Pattinson. "Lower expectations and over-deliver."

Cannes audiences have not one but two chances to swoon over Robert Pattinson. The actor known for his role as Edward Cullen in the blockbuster vampire-franchise “Twilight” arrived on the Croisette in need of a hit. And may in fact leave the festival with new blood coursing through his career.

But the actor with the biggest smile on his face may have been Robert Pattinson, who earned some of his best reviews yet for “The Rover,” the Australian action film directed by David Michod which screened to critics over the weekend. He also had strong buzz going into Monday’s competition debut of “Maps to the Stars,” a drama directed by David Cronenberg.
“He’s incredibly respectful,” Pattinson told Variety, saying he would love to collaborate with Cronenberg again. The two first worked together on 2012′s “Cosmopolis.”
Pattinson said that he’s getting ready to shoot actor Brady Corbet’s directorial debut, “The Childhood of a Leader.” He added that “Brady is just brilliant.” And Pattinson revealed that he’s been talking to “Spring Breakers” director Harmony Korine about starring in one of his upcoming projects, although the details haven’t been worked out yet.
Pattinson acknowledged the role of Edward Cullen that made him an international superstar came as a complete surprise.
“No one thought it was going to be a big deal,” Pattinson said of the 2008 vampire movie. “We thought it was going to be like ‘Thirteen,’” he said, referencing the directorial debut of Catherine Hardwicke.
“I couldn’t do another ‘Twilight’ movie,” said Pattinson, who is 28. “I’m too old.”

Robert Pattinson to Co-Star in ‘The Childhood of a Leader’

Juliette Binoche, Tim Roth and Robert Pattinson are attached to “The Childhood of a Leader,” a new drama directed by Brady Corbet, Variety has learned.

The pic is Corbet’s feature directorial debut, after winning honorable mention at Sundance in 2009 for his short “Protect You + Me.”

The drama, which tells the childhood of a post-World War I leader, is tentatively scheduled to shoot in Europe starting in May. Corbet co-wrote the script with Mona Fastvold, the director of the upcoming Sundance drama “The Sleepwalker.” It will be produced by Antoine and Martine de Clermont-Tonnere, Chris Coen and Amour Fou.

Corbet, the star of this year’s Sundance indie “Simon Killer,” just wrapped roles in Noah Baumbach’s “While We’re Young,” Andrea Di Stefano’s “Paradise Lost” and Bertrand Bonello’s “Saint Laurent.”

With roles in Simon Killer, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Melancholia, Funny Games, and more, Brady Corbet has been a fascinating actor to watch in recent years, but now the up-and-coming talent is headed down a different direction. While he directed the 2008 short Protect You + Me, he’s now set to helm his feature-length debut with a new project titled The Childhood of a Leader.
According to Variety, he’s already assembled quite a cast as well, with the Cosmopolis duo of Juliette Binoche and Robert Pattinson on board, along with Tim Roth. The film, co-written by Corbet and Mona Fastvold, will track the childhood of a post-World War I leader. Unfortunately there’s no additional details outside of a Europe production scheduled for this May, but hopefully we’ll see this one on the 2015 festival circuit.
In the meantime, watch Corbet’s aforementioned short below and one can see him hitting up festivals next year with Paradise Lost, Assayas’ Sils Maria and Fastvold’s The Sleepwalker, as well as (hopefully) Noah Baumbach‘s While We’re Young. Click HERE to see the short.

From "Twilight" hunk couldn't walk into a corner store without a legion of girls screaming and passing out, to an actor making all the right moves, Robert Pattinson continues to leave his vampire past far behind him. With a re-teaming with David Cronenberg and films with James Gray and Werner Herzog on the horizon, Pattinson continues to be cashing in his Respectable Actor chips and is now set to work again with a famed French actress.

Pattinson is re-teaming with "Cosmopolis"co-star Juliette Binoche for "The Childhood Of A Leader." Tim Roth rounds out the leading trio the cast in the film co-written by Mona Fastvold and actor Brady Corbert ("Melancholia," "Simon Killer") that will tell the story —as you might have guessed from the title — of the childhood of a post-WWI leader. Which one? Don't ask because for the moment, Variety isn't saying. That being said, we should know more soon.

Everything is coming together for shooting to start in May overseas, with Corbet making his feature directorial debut. So add this to Pattinson's growing list of intriguing projects that he has coming down the line.

UPDATE: The director, Brady Corbet, gave a description of the film to The Aesthete (via RPMoms). An excerpt:

Corbet is about to embark on his most daunting and risky gamble to date. As soon as he wraps Paradise Lost, he heads back to Paris to begin prep on his debut feature as a writer-director. And it’s a doozy: a WWI-era period drama called The Childhood of a Leader that he plans to film in both English and French with no genre hook or titillating graphic content. “It’s about an American family that has to go to France for the Paris peace conference,” Corbet says. “But it’s really a dark fable about this little boy coming of age during a very politically charged period in world history.” Corbet is well aware that to many it might seem like something of a tough sell. “I’m trying to find new and evocative ways to talk about it and make it sound not so dry because it is very formal, but it's almost a thriller. It flirts with being a thriller for sure. Yeah, it's a strange film. I guess I’ve always been passionate about anything that feels difficult.”

2014 has long been shaping up to be a memorable year for the “actor” Brady Corbet. The indie veteran whose worked with major auteur talents continues next year with the likes of Assayas, Bonello, Hansen-Løve and Baumbach film (and that not including a foursome of other projects) will then look to commence the directing phase with Juliette Binoche, Robert Pattinson and his Funny Games U.S. co-star Tim Roth in The Childhood of a Leader. Variety reports that the French financed production is aiming for what would probably be a post Cannes start. Antoine and Martine de Clermont-Tonnere (Salvo) and Chris Coen (Jane Got a Gun/Funny Games) are producing. 

Gist: Taking place perhaps during the same era as Haneke’s White Ribbon, this dramatic period piece set in France describes the childhood of a post-World War I leader. 

Worth Noting: Remember the name of Mona Fastvold. She is what we could considered a creative partner for Corbet as both collaborated on The Sleepwalker (her debut which preems in Sundance next month) and both co-wrote this film. 

Do We Care? A force and creative Sundance winning short, editing credits in Two Gates of Sleep and writing creds in Simon Killer and the Sundance-selected The Sleepwalker (see still above) which we’ll be covering next month, we’re curious in seeing just how far Corbet pushes the buttons and how an actor brings out the best in top ranked trio and the child actor he’ll cast.

This is quite the load for 2014! We couldn't be happier. Queen of the Desert is slated for January, Life in February, Mission: Blacklist somewhere after that, this new gem, The Childhood of a Leader, in May and The Lost City of Z over the summer! Keep it coming!

Hold On To Me made Variety's list of films that has AFM (American Film Market) buzzing and Film Nation released more information about the film.

FilmNation will handle international sales and distribution on Academy Award® winning director James Marsh’s (Man on Wire) Hold On To Me starring Academy Award® Nominee Carey Mulligan (Drive, The Great Gatsby, An Education) and Robert Pattinson (Twilight, Cosmopolis). Hold On To Me is written by Brad Ingelsby (Out of the Furnace) and is an electrifying thriller based on the extraordinary true story of a femme fatale who kidnaps and ransoms the town’s richest man. The film will be produced by Alexandra Milchan alongside Todd Field and Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales and Mark Roybal. 

Mulligan plays Nancy, a small town girl who callously leaves her boyfriend Jimmy (Pattinson) behind to chase a modelling career in New York City, breaking his heart in the process. To Nancy’s surprise, New York isn’t impressed by her and at 26, she’s back home waiting tables at the local diner. When she gets word that Jimmy has become a wealthy and successful criminal in Chicago, she tracks him down with a view to winning his affections, only to find crushing rejection. This is clearly Carey's vehicle but how great does it sound?? I'm so excited for Rob to be a part of it. Hell, I'm excited for Rob to be a part of all his upcoming films. He's working with great artists and the stories are so compelling. We have much to look forward to, DR. :)

Yes you heard right Robert Pattinson's "Cosmopolis" could be heading to Cannes that's according to David Cronenberg who has arrived to the Venice Film Festival to promote his next film, A Dangerous Method.

Upon arrival, Mr Cronenberg spoke to Variety and breifly mentioned Cosmopolis:

Robert Pattinson's "Remember Me" Reviewed By Variety

Spoiler Warning!



Fate sticks its foot out to trip all the characters in all the worst ways in "Remember Me," a grave romantic drama with grandiose thematic intentions. Framed in a portentous manner with a calamitous ending that will only come as a surprise to those who haven't been paying attention, the modestly scaled film delivers some moving and affecting moments amid a preponderance of scenes of frequently annoying people behaving badly. It is precisely the young female fans of star Robert Pattinson who will react most wrenchingly to this doomed romance, which should enjoy a short but sweet B.O. life.

Pattinson is in heavy James Dean mode here as a reckless, unwashed, chain-smoking, intensely confused pretty boy named Tyler who, as Dean did in "East of Eden" and "Rebel Without a Cause," has major father issues. Turning his back, at least for the moment, on his family's wealth -- dad Charles (Pierce Brosnan) is a mighty Wall Street lawyer, while classy mom Diane (Lena Olin) has remarried and is raising precocious 11-year-old artist Caroline (Ruby Jerins) -- Tyler rooms with crude low-life Aidan (Tate Ellington) while occasionally attending NYU classes between drinking bouts.
