Robert Pattinson's The Lost City of Z already makes Best of 2017 lists

Robert Pattinson's The Lost City of Z already makes Best of 2017 lists

imgbox

What a great start to the new year!

The Playlist compiled a list of The 20 Best Movies of 2017 That We've Already Seen and The Lost City of Z made the cut! The Playlist got a chance to see the film at the New York Film Festival and it left an impression.

Here's their verdict:
Verdict: Though perhaps slightly less so than when Brad Pitt or Benedict Cumberbatch were attached (it’s been developing as a film for the best part of a decade now), there’s a fair chance that “The Lost City Of Z” could be the film that finally helps James Gray, one of the best living American filmmakers but someone who’s often been under the radar, the mainstream acceptance he’s long deserved. An epic, almost Herzogian adventure (albeit with, as our NYFF review said, “a continuation of the quieter mood” of his previous film) that puts his themes of familial tragedy front and center once again, it’s absolutely gorgeous-looking thanks to DP Darius Khondji, and sees its stars deliver some of their best work to date. It might not be for everyone — it’s “classical, unrushed filmmaking,” but it’s likely to “inspire admiration and obsessives,” too.
Click HERE to check out the full list.

The Film Stage also included The Lost City of Z in their list of 50 Best 2017 Films We've Already Seen:
It is the little-stated, undeniable truth that critics are surrounded by nearly innumerable factors when experiencing the work they’ve been assigned to review. Presentation is rarely treated as a basic on the level of form, theme, or auteurist interest, and most mentions will come only if something had gone terribly wrong. This issue sometimes being rather important, I feel compelled to say James Gray’s The Lost City of Z is a rather forceful thing when projected on 35mm, as befits the writer-director’s wishes and with which the New York Film Festival, premiering this picture as the closing title of their 54th year, complied. I can and will compliment the movie for a number of reasons not necessarily pertaining to what material it was printed on and what machine it came out of, so let it be stated upfront that this is most likely the best (only?) way to experience what Gray and cinematographer Darius Khondji, reuniting from The Immigrant, have achieved: a film that will often truly and totally appear to have been made in decades past and just discovered today.
Click HERE to read their whole list and TLCoZ review.

I can't wait. We get to see Rob films every year, I know, but I grow impatient from one film to the next. A common ROBsessed problem.

The Lost City of Z will be released April 21st.

Robert Pattinson's "hotly contested" The Lost City of Z coming as soon as Spring 2017 and more!

We already know about the Amazon deal but The Hollywood Reporter scored some more 411 about The Lost City of Z distribution and deals while at TIFF this week.

From The Hollywood Reporter:
A week after Amazon Studios picked up North American rights to the hotly contested Charlie Hunnam starrer The Lost City of Z, the streaming giant has closed a deal with Bleecker Street to release the film theatrically.
Sources peg the overall deal, which was brokered by CAA, at a whopping mid-eight figures.
Amazon is putting the finishing touches on the deal with Andrew Karpen's Bleecker Street to release the James Gray-helmed film in spring 2017 -- though the rollout plan is still being worked out. Amazon's Bob Berney will spearhead the marketing and distribution.
The film, which also stars Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller, is produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B.
Click HERE to read the entire article.

THR also reports that "Bleecker Street, the upstart distributor behind Eye in the Sky and Captain Fantastic, is expected to be an active buyer at Toronto." They have a great article about how Bleecker Street is going to aggressively campaign during awards season for their film, Eye in the Sky. Great movie too. Love to see Rob's film falling in good hands. :)

We might see Robert Pattinson's Damsel premiering early 2017! Plus filming has wrapped!

We might see Robert Pattinson's Damsel premiering early 2017! Plus filming has wrapped!

The Utah Film Commission reported on Damsel wrapping production in the state and also mentioned it's scheduled to premiere early 2017. It's not a stretch to think we might see SundanceRob. Fingers crossed!

Excerpt:
The Western era comedy, Damsel, wrapped up filming last week and is scheduled to premiere early next year. Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska co-star in this comedy about a man trying to marry the woman of his dreams.

Since Twilight, Pattinson has found a new niche in the art-house world with films like Cosmopoli and The Rover. The Zellner Brothers’ new project, Damsel, fits the bill of art-house, but should be more lighthearted than the former. It was fun having him in our State and by the looks of it, he wears Utah proudly.
It also appears the film has wrapped in Oregon and overall! Congrats, Rob, and we can't wait to see the film!

Robert Pattinson is "perfectly cast", gives his "best performance", and is "as crisp as the white shirt" he wears in LIFE

UPDATE2: 2 reviews added!
UPDATE: 3 reviews added! Rob's work called terrific, edgy, understated, charismatic and more!

I've really enjoyed Rob's reviews out of Berlinale. Click HERE if you missed the initial reviews for Queen of the Desert. The films have received mixed reviews but Rob's performances have been mainly on mainly positive side. Critics just don't disrespect his work like they used to and that's certainly pleasant to read.
Here are the highlighted excerpts for Life, which you know is a leading role for our guy. :)

UPDATE

Telegraph:
Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson shine in Anton Corbijn's low-key portrait of James Dean...But Stock, too, who has an ex-wife and young son he barely sees, is playing the angles, sniffing out a meal ticket. The underrated Pattinson is playing a cold fish here, and does a credible job getting inside Dennis’s aura of shifty desperation: he pesters Dean, pursues him to New York, hangs around his grimy apartment building. The star is half-alarmed, half-amused, and can’t decide if he needs this vulture buzzing around him or not...There are photographers whose camera is like an extra limb, but he’s not one of them. Every time Pattinson reaches for his, he seems sneaky about it, as if he’s stealing something, aware that the authenticity of the moment is under threat.
Observer:
Anton Corbijn’s Life stars Pattinson in an admirably low-key role as mid-century photographer Dennis Stock and his frustrated attempts to land a Life magazine photo spread with laconic and wary up-and-comer James Dean (Dane DeHaan, doing disaffection with a surprisingly convincing pout). The slow-burn film is an absorbing study of how arresting, emotionally potent circumstances become iconic imagery.
HeyUGuys:
Considering we’re living vicariously through Robert Pattinson’s Dennis Stock in Anton Corbijn’s ambitious biographical drama Life, we rely on our protagonist earning the trust of Hollywood icon and star James Dean, to be granted the fortune of getting beneath the surface of his subject, to allow the audience to do so themselves. What transpires is an absorbing insight into the life of one of the industry’s mot renowned, and elusive stars....Given the undeniable charm and charisma of Pattinson, there was always the fear that he would steal the show from his counterpart, and be perceived as the star. However such is his understated, subtle turn, it allows DeHaan to take on that very role, which, given he’s playing James Dean, simply has to be the case.
Cine-Vue:
DeHaan and Pattinson are also both terrific, at once elegant and charismatic, yet equally uncomfortable in the skins they inhabit. Dean's ability to mirror the dilemmas of a disenfranchised generation of youngster made him a star and whilst DeHaan's performance is a little over-exaggerated, he still manages to capture that sense of relatable despondency. This also affords Pattinson time out of the spotlight in one of his strongest roles to date.
London Evening Standard:
Pattinson as the restlessly ambitious Stock is more edgy (you can’t help wishing he had been cast as Dean instead)
Boston Herald:
How honest, personal and affecting is LIFE.... Robert Pattinson is perfectly cast as Stock, a man adrift with an ex-wife from a teenage marriage and guilt filled about the young son he never sees.
Canvas:
The main things you'll remember are Pattinson's best performance and the finest projectile vomit scene you’ve ever seen.
Variety:
Robert Pattinson in a sly turn as Dennis Stock...It’s the peculiarly moving, even subtly queer friendship between the two men that distinguishes “Life” from standard inside-Hollywood fare, while gorgeous production values and ace star turns make it a thoroughly marketable arthouse prospect...DeHaan and Pattinson enact this anti-romance beautifully, each man quizzically eyeing the other for leads and clues, while coyly retreating from scrutiny. Pattinson, adding to his post-“Twilight” gallery of sharp-cut screw-ups, brings intriguing layers of childish dysfunction to a character who is only ostensibly the straight man in the partnership.
Gone With The Movies:
For Robert Pattinson, his take on iconic photographer Dennis Stock is equally as impressive as he enters the world of Hollywood from the other side of the carpet (and at bottom). Spotting Dean's talent early, Stock, in the two-hour running time attempts to get photographs of Dean before fame kicks in. Deadlines, pressure and awkwardness soon mount-up, and Pattinson expertly presents it onto screen.
Little White Lies:
Robert Pattinson impresses in this stylish drama about the relationship between celebrity and the media. An intense mob formed around the Berlinale press screening of Anton Corbijn's Life — such is the continued allure of Robert Pattinson. His fans beyond the festival will be pleased to hear that his brittle performance as LIFE magazine photographer, Dennis Stock, outshines Dane DeHaan's over-baked rendering of James Dean, although the latter is poignant enough to enliven this tale of men helping each other to take a leap into greatness...Pattinson's performance is as crisp as the white shirt and black suits his character always wears. This is a camouflage for his own problems that slowly unfurl, adding colour and improving the film...The social backdrop is just as carefully wrought. In another film, Ben Kingsley's fuming studio head, Jack Warner, would be The Other Man to Jimmy Dean and the tussle would be Saving Mr Banks flavour. Instead, Kingsley ball-busts just enough to give Jimmy's non-conformity gravitas, but the viewfinder is trained on the man behind the camera. Pattinson steps up, allowing more of his character's insides to come out. As Life proceeds the pace picks up and by the third act, it is a compelling dramatisation of an artistically fascinating alliance.
Screen Daily:
The two leads convince as actors; it’s the characters that are more of a problem. DeHaan method acts his way into the persona of a consummate method actor whose cool persona was partly a protective screen; his Dean is very much in the mould of the Dean remembered by his East Of Eden co-star Lois Smith, who once said: “He was a sweet, rustic person, but there was also this suspicious, taut, guarded young man”. Pattinson’s hangdog character is defined by an exchange in which, after Dean tells him he’s disappointed in him, he replies “you’re not the only one”.
The Hollywood Reporter:
While Pattinson has endured a lot of gratuitous bashing post-Twilight, he gives arguably the most fully rounded performance here
The Guardian review is bleh but I did wonder if anyone was going to muse about if Rob was in the role of Dean instead. It was something many of us thought when Rob was first cast and several media outlets during the casting announcement thought so as well.

Robert Pattinson's LIFE and Queen of the Desert highly anticipated, expected at Cannes & MORE

Siting at #8 for Queen of the Desert and #19 for Life, Rob's 2015 films get some strong love from The Playlist in their 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2015 list! They also gave a shoutout to Idol's Eye and The Trap in their honorable mentions section. Visit the link to check it out.

I liked that last line...."Expect a Cannes premiere..."
Oh we will. We most definitely will.

Dazed had some positive commentary in their Films To Watch For list and see Life as one to "clean up when award season comes around."
Hey U Guys had nothing but great things to say while including QOTD on their list of Must See 2015 Films Which Are Still A Secret: With such a skilled filmmaker at the helm and a brilliantly dense cast relaying the life and legacy of Bell, this looks set to be a hallmark release in 2015.
Thompson on Hollywood has QOTD as a festival hopeful on their 45 Films We're Looking Forward To In 2015 and IonCinema has Queen of the Desert as one of their most anticipated foreign films of 2015. Again...I'm liking the last line...

We'll be paying attention to all festival announcements but let us be real. We know where Rob belongs...

Werner Herzog about Robert Pattinson as T.E. Lawrence: "He is a smart man and the choice was quite natural."

 photo WernerHerzogampRobertPattinson.jpg

We have two films to look forward to in 2015 and both of them have Rob tackling real life characters. T.E. Lawrence is arguably the better known character and Werner Herzog has nothing but praise to give Rob for his take on the iconic figure in Queen of the Desert.

Translation by PAW of Bande à Part:
Can you tell us more about your next movie 'Queen Of The Desert'?
In less than ten days, I will start the mixing. The filming and editing are completed and I should be able to put an end to the movie in the first days of december.I don't know where or when it will be shown for the first time.
The cast is really impressive: Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson...
They all really wanted to work with me. I was asked why I chose Pattinson. It's not a big part, and it matched perfectly. I needed an englishman who still looks like a schoolboy but which is very smart. He plays Lawrence of Arabia, but at the age of 22, on an archeological site. Kidman, who plays the main role is wondering what that kid has to do in a place like this, and an archeologist tells her that this kid has a PhD.Pattinson is really good in that role. He is a smart man and the choice was quite natural.
If you understand French, here's the original text:
Pouvez-vous nous dire quelques mots sur 'Queen of the Desert', votre prochain film?
Dans moins de dix jours, je vais débuter le mixage. Le tournage et le montage sont terminés et je devrais pouvoir mettre un point final au film dans les premiers jours de décembre. Je ne sais ni quand, ni où il sera montré en premier.
Le casting est très prestigieux: Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson…
Ils voulaient tous vraiment travailler avec moi. On m’a demandé pourquoi j’avais choisi Pattinson.

A fan sent us a link to Hillel Levin's blog where he talked about the casting of Rob and Robert De Niro. Levin is the author of the article, Boosting the Big Tuna, that inspires the film.

From HillelLevin.com:
Big news for this project out of Cannes, where director Olivier Assayas released his latest film, Clouds of Sils Maria. He will next work on Idol's Eye, a movie based on my April 2007 article for Playboy called, "Boosting the Big Tuna." The story is about burglars who break into the home of Chicago's longtime Godfather, Tony Accardo. Robert Pattinson will play the burglar ringleader, who is based on John Mendell--a freelance "juice man" or "wire man" capable of overcoming the most sophisticated burglar alarms, but also the proprietor of a machine shop who was desperate to go "legit." De Niro will play Accardo, who ruled Chicago's mob for five decades. Despite the fact that he's hardly a household name, I would argue that Accardo was America's most important organized crime figure in the twentieth century. He not only influenced politics in the Windy City, but also corrupted wide swaths of the union movement (e.g. Teamsters and Laborers), and probably did more to build the Las Vegas Strip (mostly with Teamster pension funds) than anyone else. He features prominently in my play, "Assassination Theater." By the time of the burglary, he had become practically an establishment figure in Chicago--unusually accessible to the neighbors in his wealthy suburb, courtly to the power elite, with whom he occasionally rubbed shoulders, but still bone-chillingly ruthless with anyone who crossed his path in the criminal world--as Mendell eventually found out. It will be fascinating to see De Niro's approach to the part. One funny note: the dispute between Accardo and Mendell centers on the burglary of a high-end pawn shop. Somehow, in the mix of accents at Cannes, "pawn" got turned into "porn." I hope the reality here does not disappoint.
HAHA!

Ok back to serious talk. This is CRAZY exciting. I've been vibrating from the excitement since yesterday and it just keeps getting better! You can google Rob's character name (click HERE to see  picture) if you want to know his story but know there will be spoilers since it's historical fact out there.

As you already know, Robert De Niro casting news broke yesterday. Today, it looks like Rachel Weisz will be joining the Roberts!

From Variety:
Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz is in negotiations to join Robert Pattinson and Robert De Niro for Olivier Assayas’ sprawling Chicago-set gangster drama “Idol’s Eye,” which is due to start shooting in the fall.
Charles Gillibert at Paris-based CG Cinema is lead-producing the film with American partners Benaroya Pictures, which is financing and producing, as well as Bluegrass Films’ Scott Stuber, Film 360’s Scott Lambert, Alexandra Milchan and Michael Benaroya. Ben Sachs is exec producing for Benaroya Pictures.

Previously titled “Hubris,” the project is based on a 2007 Playboy article called “Boosting The Big Tuna” by Hillel Levin. It follows a group of thieves who rob a man who turns out to be Chicago mafia boss Tony Accardo.
Script is penned by Assayas, who won a Golden Globe for “Carlos the Jackal,” his mini-series starring Edgar Ramirez as Venezuelan revolutionary Ilich Ramirez Sanchez.
International Film Trust, the outfit topped by Christian De Gallegos and launched last year by Benaroya and Miscellaneous Entertainment, is repping foreign sales on “Idol’s Eye.”
CAA, which arranged financing, will represent domestic rights along with WME.
Weisz is repped by Independent Talent Group, CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Assayas’ latest film, “Clouds of Sils Maria,” produced by Gillibert’s CG Cinema, competed at Cannes.
Rob was supposed to be with Rachel in Unbound Captives...then Maps To The Stars....is Idol's Eye third times the charm? We can not WAIT for this movie. It's looking to be a HUGE deal. :))))

This period has seen several of my recent film projects getting busy. The Rover released one still almost a year ago, with a huge public response. My web site, good for about 4 hits a day, hit over a thousand that day, largely thanks to Robert Pattinsons enormous fan base. There has been nothing else released for almost a year, and now a bunch of new stills and a trailer have sparked big interest. Its a really exciting film to be involved with.
