You've got to love David and his love for Rob. He spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at NYFF over the weekend and spoke about how he had no problem looking past Rob's Twilight past when casting him and Thank God for us he did.
"David Cronenberg's Hollywood-centered family melodrama Maps to the Stars marks the veteran director's second straight film with Twilight alum Robert Pattinson after 2012's Cosmopolis.
Although many still see Pattinson as vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen, Cronenberg told The Hollywood Reporter he can easily look past that.
"I have no problem ignoring that," the director said. "Of course I watched the first Twilight movie just to see what he was like and get a feel for his screen presence and so on and so on. … By the time you're on the set, it's just the two of you making movies. You forget your own movies too."
Speaking to THR ahead of Saturday night's New York Film Festival screening of Maps, Cronenberg explained that he wanted to work with Pattinson (who wasn't in attendance at the New York event) on this movie not only because the director thinks of him as "a wonderful actor" and they "had a good time on Cosmopolis," but also because it provided the opportunity for Pattinson to participate in the sort of ensemble film he'd told Cronenberg he wanted to do.
"He told me that he was scared about Cosmopolis because he had not really wanted to do a movie where he was the lead and had the whole movie on his shoulders," the director explained. "And of course in that movie he's in almost every scene. He said, 'One day I'd love to do an ensemble piece where there are a lot of good actors and [he's] just one of them.' "
When Cronenberg was putting together Maps, he thought of his Cosmopolis star."

ALSO some fantastic news about Maps To The Stars. While chatting to Vulture David revealed that Maps would be getting an Oscar-qualifying run.
" “They’re going to do a qualifying run — I think it’s in New York and L.A. — so that it will legitimately qualify for the Golden Globes and the Oscars,” said Cronenberg, who admitted, “There was a lot of discussion. You know, they really felt that they could do a better job releasing the film in 2015, in January or February. And then, of course, the discussion was, ‘Yeah, but wouldn’t it be great if Julianne got an Oscar nomination, since she won Best Actress at Cannes?’”Want to see some Exclusive Photos and Video from the Maps to the Stars Q&A At NYFF?
A strong recent showing at the Toronto Film Festival convinced Focus World to put the film out this year, though the distributor hasn’t committed to funding a costly Oscar campaign. “You know, I think the movie will find its way regardless,” said Maps screenwriter Bruce Wagner. “It already has.” "

TORONTO – For a man who emerged as the fully formed and fully fanged vampire heartthrob in the Twilight saga, Robert Pattinson almost seems too fully dimensional, too human, too real to be locker pin-up material. But he’s managing.
The British actor who played Edward opposite Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan says he’s learned to adapt to a complete lack of control when it comes to public perception, which is one reason why he loves working with David Cronenberg so much.
Pattinson played the lead in Cronenberg’s 2012 outing, a limo-bound narrative about greed, corruption and self-contained narcissism called Cosmopolis. And he returns to Cronenberg’s bizarre landscapes in Maps to the Stars, a truly odd Oedipal yarn woven through a Hollywood loom.
Pattinson plays a limo driver to various celebrities in this new effort that also stars Mia Wasikowska, Julianne Moore and John Cusack, and while he says his character, Jerome, was relatively blank on the page, he knew he could trust Cronenberg to let him grope for a while, and get a good feel for what was needed.
“David is very funny,” Pattinson says. “I just like him as a person, and it helps that I really like his work. I like the way he runs his sets: They are so comfortable and I feel more confident on them.”
Pattinson says Cronenberg never panics when faced with the unknown. He allows the story and the characters to evolve organically.
“On Cosmopolis, I was terrified because it was such a wordy script and I hadn’t done any rehearsals, and I hadn’t had any talks with him about the character until the Sunday before the Monday we started shooting. And I tell you I nearly had a nervous breakdown because I assumed he thought I knew exactly what I was going to do and just pull it out…. “ Pattinson laughs, with a sweet little twinkle.

The Star had some fun info about the Maps To The Stars Afterparty. Looks like Dean needed a bit of help because Rob had THREE bodyguards!
"Pattinson was spotted later at C Lounge for the after-party of Maps to the Stars, David Cronenberg’s new film that puts Pattinson alongside Julianne Moore, John Cusack and Sarah Gadon. The film came to TIFF with much buzz; Moore won best actress at Cannes for playing an aging performer who is past her prime.
The megawatt cast was divided among three booths at the club, with security guards blocking each from fans. Twilight-mania must still be going strong; Pattinson had three guards on duty while Cusack and Moore only required one each.
Aside from the celebrity sightings, the party was more of the same. Gawking guests made human traffic jams near the celebrities, with motherly security intervening now and again to remind people that it’s impolite to stare."Come on, impolite or not did they really think people wouldn't stare at Robert Pattinson? They're lucky all they did was stare.

CONFIRMED: Robert Pattinson's 'Maps To The Stars' Will Have Its North American Premiere At TIFF '14
Great news today. It was confirmed during the TIFF '14 Press Conference that Maps To The Stars will have it's North American Premiere at this years Toronto Film Festival. Not a major surprise but great to have it officially confirmed.
There are still many more films to be announced for the festival so we're still keeping our fingers firmly crossed that we may also see Life & Queen of the Desert there as well.
We'll keep you updated if there's anymore news on those.
This year's Toronto Film Festival runs from September 4-14.

Translation of the parts where David mentions Rob
A child kills another near a urinal, it goes a long way … At the same time, the beauty of the movie is that it's 'for' children, to save the children. The character played by Mia Wasikowska is older but behaves like a child. She gathers children.
Yes the main character is the sweetest, most naive, the purest even she's crazy. She isn't here to become a star but to solve a family trauma. Jerome's character played by Robert Pattinson is also a child. He isn't born in Los Angeles, he comes from Indiana and elsewhere, he believes that he is able to play the game. It's pathetic, he'll be destroyed like a child. He's too vulnerable. He plays the badass people but he doesn't. At the end, the children are destroyed by monsters. This is the new direction taken by the poem Liberté which was written by Paul Eluard at the time of the Resistance. Here, freedom is death.
Why did you have so much difficulty making Maps To The Stars ?
My movies are canadian-UK, Canadian-French or Canadian-German coproductions. I had to shoot at least five days in Los Angeles. We couldn't recreate Hollywood in Toronto, we had to shoot there, it's so special. We shot twenty four days in Toronto and five in L.A. One of the problems was to find a coproduction allowing to shoot in the States, and therefore spending money in the United States rather than in the coproducing country. And in most coproductions, it's not possible to have a co writer which isn't from the coproduction country … There is also the problem of the actors : we were only allowed to have one American actor, and that's John Cusack. Julianne Moore has a British passport, Mia Wasikowska is Australian with a Polish passport, Robert Pattinson is English. We didn't manage to find a coproduction eight years ago or five years ago either. And this is the coproduction with Germany which allowed us to get an American screenwriter. And SaĂŻd Ben SaĂŻd joined us. Here is the reality with which I have to deal as an independent director !
In Maps To The Stars, we can feel the light of Los Angeles. At the end, on the terrace of the hospital, the decor is very strange, we can feel the hills behind.
You believed it? This scene is a CGI one! We shot the hills and we put behind the scenes in Toronto. There was nothing around. I know that in Los Angeles, we would see the hills, that's why I put this background. We did the same the thing in the scene where Mia discovers Rob on set, the Hollywood hills in the background are made in CGI. When people ask me if I like CGI, I say yes: not to create monsters, but to give birth to this kind of atmosphere without anyone noticing it. It's invisible but it helps to create a certain reality.
Was it a joke to shoot Robert Pattinson as a limo driver after Cosmopolis?
No. Of course, I thought about it, but he loved the idea of being a part of an ensemble, not being the lead actor. So this is a chance … In fact, in the movie, he's Bruce Wagner, because Bruce was a limo driver for years, and the lead part in his first novel, Force Majeure, is a limo driver. But only a few people saw Cosmopolis, so nobody will think about it. I hope there will be more people going to see Maps To The Stars (laughs)!

Why did you sell your mansion in Los Angeles?
She was much too big for me. I'm not old enough to toil with homeowner's things like broken water pipes.
Where do you live now?
I was homeless for six months after the sale. I borrowed houses from people when they were not in the city. Now I've found a home in the Hollywood Hills that I rent. It is not too large. I barely have furniture. Some of them are from the previous tenant. The only thing I brought with me, are air mattresses. In which I sleep. (Tink: With me. Shhhhhhh)
You have earned millions and can afford expensive equipment.
I'm not materialistic. The only thing I treat myself, are old guitars. I have 17 in my collection. My showpiece is a Gibson J100 acoustic guitar from the year 1943. Other bells and whistles such as designer clothes I do not care. However, I should go to buy clothes.
Why?
I can not find most of them. That's why I wear the jacket I'm wearing, continuously for the past two weeks. My stuff should be in any case either in a rental warehouse in Los Angeles or in my London apartment. I rather think the latter. I've just seen pictures of my old roommate Tom Sturridge, running around in my pants and shirt ... (laughs).
(Tink: Translations are always hilarious. Case in point, this bizarre change of subject LOL)
They also suffer from depression. Are you in therapy?
I would really like to try, but just the thought of it makes me nervous. I think I am a person who needs his emotional ups and downs. I'm not manic-depressive, and I cross my psycho-valleys pretty quickly.

David MichĂ´d talks Robert Pattinson: "He's obviously intelligent and really wonderfully emotionally available"
What a great read. GREAT read. Directors continue to have amazing things to say about Rob. His talent, his intelligence, his work ethic, his character....they are always praised above and beyond the typical praise.
David MichĂ´d spoke to Twitch about The Rover and this is the excerpt about Rob.
Twitch Film:
TWITCH: In contrast, there is Pattinson's character, who I think is extraordinary in this film. Can you talk about bringing him into the role? How did you work with him on attenuating his performance, making sure it didn't get too broad?
MICHÔD: In a way, the answer to both questions is that Robert came in and tested for me and his tests were just extraordinary.
I, like everyone else, didn't know what he was capable of. Certainly his previous work didn't give you a clear indicator.
I met him before I even knew I was going to make The Rover, and there was something about him that I really liked. He's obviously intelligent and really wonderfully emotionally available.
When [Pattinson] came in to audition for me, he came in with a really beautifully defined and sophisticated reading of the character that seemed from the outset to avoid all of those possible moments of caricature that that character could so easily slip into.
How did Pattinson get hooked into the project?
I had a meeting with him maybe a year before I made the movie and it became immediately apparent to me in that meeting that he not only loved Animal Kingdom but had seen all of the shorts that I had made with my friends. He had beyond that a really eclectic, sophisticated interest in cinema. He was actively looking for interesting things to do and actively looking to meet interesting filmmakers.
Had he done any of his Cronenberg work when you first started working together?
Yes, I had seen Cosmopolis. I had even had a phone conversation with Cronenberg to see what working with Rob was like generally. [With] Cosmopolis, that is another character that is quite brooding and still in a way that's not similar to the stuff he does in Twilight. It didn't give me a clear indication that he could do the 180 degree shift that I was going to ask him to do on The Rover.
I always needed to see an audition. He was willing to do it because he knew that he wanted to play the character and that he needed to work hard to get it.
I love that whole notion of you as a director in Australia just calling up Cronenberg and asking him for advice. Is that a common thing? I picture some secret handshake between directors where you exchange private numbers.
I think in the world of filmmakers and generally those kinds of phone calls are reasonably easy to facilitate because they're reasonably important. I didn't want to ask David whether or not Rob was a good actor. I felt that I had seen that in the tests and long auditions that he had done for me. What I wanted to know was what he was like as a human being on set because those things can be important. David shared his experience which turned out to be much the same as mine, that he was delightful and hard-working.
LOVE LOVE LOVE. Can you imagine that awesome phone call between the Davids?? Click HERE to read the full interview!
