PRINT: Robert Pattinson Talks About James Dean's Positive Influence On Dennis Stock & MORE To Elle (Italy)

Elle magazine (Italy) spoke to Rob while on the set of Life. I've used google translated to translate the interview (and I tweeked the bits that sounded a little off) so it does actually read ok, but if a better translation comes out in the meantime I'll update it.

After seeing Life yesterday I love that Rob mentions one of the scenes that I found most poignant in the movie. I thought Rob captured Dennis' awkwardness and insecurities perfectly and I can't wait for the dvd to come out so I can rewatch to my hearts content. I wish a cinema nearer to me was showing it so I could go a few more times but I'm delighted I got the chance to see it on the big screen ;)

Translation
Robert Pattinson is back in cinemas on October 8 with the film Life, by Anton Corbijn dedicated to James Dean, cinema legend who died exactly 60 years ago in a car accident. The actor became famous as a vampire in Twilight, however, did not take the role of the legendary Jimmy (playing him is Dane DeHaan), as widely expected, but that of photographer Dennis Stock, who in 1955 - the year of the stars death - snapped a series of photographs for Life magazine and immortalized James Dean as no one before him had done. Anton Corbijn is dedicating the whole movie to the relationship of trust that exists between the two: to speak in more detail about the film is Robert Pattinson, in this exclusive interview during the filming of the movie.

Dennis and James. A photographer on the verge of bankruptcy and an artist on the front page. Tell us about the dynamics of their friendship.
The story of the two has a very original dynamic. James Dean is a character so sympathetic and Dennis, however, is not always so. There is a time for me, that sums up their diversity fully. There's this scene where James Dean is playing with his cousin, and Dennis just says, 'I do not know how you can do it.' In essence he is saying 'I do not understand what they're trying.' Dennis had a son, of course, but does not love him and that's just awful. He is perpetually filled with the negativity, so full of anxiety, to the point of being irritating. I can not think that there are such people, you can not believe the fact that they say about not being able to love. It's kind of horrible, but in its being is a tragic character too charming. And as I said the dynamic between them is very interesting.

James Dean is a myth. Have you ever had an influence on your career?
I have long admired his work. I believe that in 16 years a lot of actors have had their 'James Dean' stage and for most of them, the important thing is not to interpret the role but become part of the myth linked to him - and I also experienced one of the two phases. He is certainly still an icon but Dane (DeHaan) would be able to answer that question better than me because he's more tied to James Dean, his figure, the myth.

Would you be interested to play the part of James Dean?
Oh no, absolutely not (laughs) Dane did a great job.

How did it go with Anton Corbijn?
Working with Anton Corbijn has been a great honour and his first film Control (about the life of Ian Curtis, leader of Joy Division), was the reason why I decided just to accept the part. I loved the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed Anton's style and I knew that LIFE would have followed the same path.

With the camera instead?
To practice better, I took some pictures on the set of LIFE and the other films that I was shooting The Queen of the Desert where I play with Nicole Kidman. So for a few months I took a number of wonderful horrifying pictures with a 1953 Leica M1. It was the staff of Dennis, but the same pattern. It should be a model came out some time before that of Stock. It's beautiful, and it works perfectly. I think that will never break. "

Who was Stock?
Dennis was always worried that everything went wrong. He felt haunted by the possibility that the public would not follow him, they were not on his side. But at the same time, I thought he was a completely current. It's the story of someone who is trying to become an artist, and the fear of not being able to achieve his dream is the saddest part of his life and demoralizing. Dennis is the kind of artist who is so fearful of not being at the height of his profession that he would use excuses for anything. When Jimmy sees for the first time, it's fun because it has just that effect is undeniable. Being in contact with someone who is reaching his potential is very good to see. Relating to James Dean and all that was happening to him, also allowed Dennis to believe a little more in himself.

Do you believe, therefore, that James Dean had a positive influence on the photographer?
Absolutely yes. Sometimes you just need a little encouragement and the fact that Jimmy told him 'These are fantastic' while showing him pictures showing him, for him was a huge source of pride. I think at that specific time Dean has shown clearly and paved the way for Stock. Jimmy was regarded as a true artist who has had a profound impact on his life. And so, when Jimmy gave his approval, well, that's all you need sometimes - this is all you need to start believing in yourself. And I think that's what happened. For Dennis, the meeting with Jimmy was fundamental and has changed his life and certainly his work.

Robert Pattinson's The Rover makes must-see lists and his "superb performance" continues to be praised!

Robert Pattinson's The Rover makes must-see lists and his "superb performance" continues to be praised!

Access Hollywood had a must-see summer indie movie segment on yesterday and I loved seeing Alicia Malone give The Rover some love. If you don't know Alicia Malone, check out her past Rob interviews HERE.

Entertainment Weekly also included The Rover on their must-see summer art-house movie list, saying "both actors astound."

Check out more reviews that we liked for The Rover and you can always catch up HERE, under our The Rover Reviews tag.

The Upcoming (5 stars)
The strength of this movie is its setting in a near-apocalyptic future yet not so far from what our actual world is becoming. The movie is very minimalist, and so is the language, which leads to amazing performances, especially from Pearce and Pattinson. They’re strong, fragile, sad and angry at the same time. The tension between them is there all along, yet they manage to create a beautiful relationship from their two broken souls.
From the score to the cinematography, from the lights to the framing, from the script to the choice of the cast, everything hails Michôd’s work as a great achievement.
Total Film:
The technical credits are first-rate and both Pearce and Pattinson convince in their roles, the former mad-eyed and clenched, the latter confused of mind and slurred of tongue and possessed of a touching purity. Between this and his work for David Cronenberg, Pattinson is suggesting his career post-Twilight will sparkle like Edward Cullen’s skin. Michod, meanwhile, confirms he’s a filmmaker of considerable talents.
FMV magazine (3.5 stars):
Scoot McNairy is good as Henry, the leader of the gang who will protect himself at all costs but it’s Robert Pattinson, who is almost unrecognizable, finally realising his potential with a superb performance as Henry’s brother, Rey. Hopefully he will be remembered for portrayals like this rather than that vampire bloke in Twilight franchise
Letterboxd (4 stars):
Tough, gritty and quietly powerful, this film not only delivers great Guy Pearce and surprising Robert Pattinson performances
Film School Rejects (B):
A critical retroactive sadness to Pearce’s steely determination. That flinty persona clashes well with Pattinson’s desperately thuggish demeanor, the hardened man tolerating the hapless boy.

This new article from Elle (Brazil) is translated and you know how it is with the foreign interviews. Grain of salt applies. Since I'm not a fan of interviews that need a translation, I'm adding a bonus sexy picture to make me feel better. ;)

Photobucket

Elle magazine (Brazil) translation:
He could have a huge ego.  British actor Robert Pattnson is one of the  highest paid in Hollywood - just in the last year, he earned $26,5M  according to Forbes. The blue eyed guy has a legion of  rabid fans, that follow him everywhere, and to add to that, he has been  getting offers from acclaimed filmmakers. An example is the Canadian  David Cronenberg, that directed him in Cosmopolis - the movie was  in competition for the Palm D'Or in Cannes and will be released in  Brazil in August. In person, however, Pattinson surprises for his  humility and sense of humor. "All of a sudden, I left a ridiculous  £500 paycheck and became a Hollywood star. And all of that happened  without me proving anything." jokes the actor, that became famous all over the world with the Twilight saga, which started in 2008 and has made since then $2.5 billions.

Even  after beating more that 3000 candidates for the part of the vampire  Edward Cullen, Pattinson is the first to admit that the character never "demanded much effort". "The screenwriters did the best they could, but there isn't a lot to do when the guy never changes" says the actor, a lot more excited about what the movies brought to his life than making them. "I know that I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Twilight. But from now on I want to overcome my insecurities as an actor, even if it means to take risks and make mistakes."

The first part from this new phase is Eric Packer, the finance genius that he plays in Cosmopolis.  Adaptated from Don DeLillo book, the futuristic drama follows the day  of the ruthless billionaire that faces an existential crisis by putting  his fortune in danger. With all the classic weirdness of a Cronenberg  movie, most of the scenes are set inside a limousine, in which  Pattinson's character gets many visits - including prostitutes, doctors  and financial analysts. "I confess that, when I read the script, I  thought about saying no to the offer. I didn't want to look like a  coward, but I couldn't understand anything. I felt an enormous potential  for failure, especially because my character talks nonstop", he  says laughing. Fortunately, Cronenberg didn't care about the fact that  the finance world didn't mean anything to Pattinson. The way that he  felt alienated would work on his side - since his character isolates  himself. "Only after, during filming, is when I understood that the  script is about an absurd contention in the struggle for power. It's an  apocalyptic story about capitalism."

During the movie, the protagonist reveals that deep down he's just trying to escape from himself - something that Pattinson can relate to. Since he became famous, the actor is chased by the media and fans. "I try not to think a lot about that and just do my job. My life is really weird. It's not as strange as my character's in Cosmopolis, but I feel just as claustrophobic as him sometimes.". Eric Packer even goes through a prostate exam in the limo. But the actor doesn't complain. At least Packer and his next roles go beyond the "good guy" of the story. "It's not easy to get around as the heartthrob for a long time. You need to be extremely self-confident, that's not my case. I don't think I'm attractive. I'm weird.", says Pattinson, that started acting when he was 15 at the Barnes Theatre Company to "meet girls".

In his current phase of acting in more cult projects, the actor plays in Bel Ami, based on the book by Guy de Maupassant, that will be released in Brazil in August, in the role of a seductive man with an obscure soul, that sleeps with women like Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas for money and power. In Mission: Blacklist, currently in pre-production, he's going to play Eric Maddox, who spearheaded the capture of Saddam Hussein. And in The Rover, also in pre-production, his character will be a mentally disturbed guy, that helps his brother in getting back a stolen car. (Tink: Guy Pearce's character has his car stolen by Rob's character and his brothers. Rob is left behind and helps Guy go after the car. Guy doesn't play Rob's brother.) "They are interesting parts for an actor like me, that still has a lot to learn."

Pattinson is also writing a script with his girlfriend, the actress Kristen Stewart, that he met during Twilight. "It's not for now. We're not going to hurry to work together again. We know it has to be a really great movie to explain a new partnership on screen.  If not, they're going to crush us", he explains. He says he couldn’t have found a “more perfect” girl than Kristen. "She understands exactly how I feel. She is an ambitious woman who wants to grow as an actress. She has an excellent radar for what is good and challenges me constantly."

Named Robsten by the media – like Brangelina (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) – , the couple went through the emotion and the craziness of having a movie competing for the Palm D'Or at the latest Cannes Festival. He was competing with Cosmopolis, and she with Walter Salles’ On The Road. "Someone made a joke about us being adversaries, which would be insane.” Pattinson admits that he got "a little jealous" when Kristen told him about being at the French event – Cosmopolis' selection wasn't confirmed yet. "In the end, it was amazing to have each other’s support. Her presence at the gala screening of the movie made me really nervous. She was sitting in front of me. I kept looking at the back of her neck, trying to find out if she was liking the movie or not (laughs). I only relaxed when, at the end, Kristen told me she loved it.”

Robert Pattinson's Full Interview With Elle

Photobucket

ELLE: How great a novel is Bel Ami?

ROBERT PATTINSON: Amazing. One of my favorites. The script was really good too; Duroy has kind of changed a little bit.

He’s so cynical in the book, but now he’s so convinced that he knows everything and that he’s been wronged, that he ends up being very earnest. He realizes that the whole world he lives in is based on a lie; it angers him so much that he basically wants to burn the whole thing down…and in trying to enjoy everything, he becomes what he hates most: a pompous little shit.

ELLE: Was it fun playing a ladies’ man instead of a celibate?

RP: Completely. I thought it was funny as well—Twilight having quite a bit of a female audience—to play a guy who basically screws women out of money. I like the fact that you never hear of a movie where the bad guy stabs every single person in the back and then wins.

ELLE: So you relished playing a sleazy journalist?

RP: I like the section where he gets a job as a gossip writer and in a completely banal way just makes stuff up—uses the same story and changes the names. I think that still is very, very true.

ELLE: It was once reported that you were pregnant.

RP: Yeah, a couple years ago. (Kate: Longest pregnancy ever!) That was true, though.

ELLE: Any other odd encounters with the media recently?

RP: A bunch of paparazzi were following me, and I thought the best way to deal with it was to stop my car in the middle of the street and say, “I’m not leaving, and I’m not going to speak to you anymore.” They got all pissed off because they can’t just keep taking the same picture. We were in Venice by the boardwalk, and they kept trying to get all these drug dealers to come up to the car. I was just like, Oh my God, this is insane.

Egads...tough to see...here's what I could read:
  • It opens with a description of him that fits in our posts: "smoldering, perfect, tousled, finger-lickin'"
  • Elle kicks up dust and says regarding Kristen Stewart: "they may have slept together a few times but potentially really are just good friends"
  • Rob took a break from filming Breaking Dawn to talk with Elle and "perked up" when discussing his post-Twilight career.
  • They mention the ladies in Bel Ami and Reese from WFE
  • Q: How great a novel is Bel Ami? Rob: Amazing. One of my favorites. The script was really good too. Duroy has kind of changed a bit. Rob: You know, when the whole thing dries up and there's hardly any paparazzi around - I don't know, in 15 years or something - I like the idea of just one paparazzo coming out and trying to get a picture and I just beat the shit out of him. I mean - out of nowhere - when my picture's not even worth...and I've spent all my money, so you can't sue me!
  • Q: Is your idea of hell to end up at age 45 posing with Twilighters at a comic book convention? Rob: I mean, that would be totally fine - if I didn't have any responsibilities, if it didn't affect my career anymore. I did a couple of these after Harry Potter, when I was totally unemployed. You can have so much fun. There are so many weirdos there.

  • Q: Have you had many near-death experiences? Rob: Yes, loads. I am the worst driver in the world. Every time I get in a car, I call up my parents and say goodbye.
  • Q: What percentage of evil do you think you are? Rob: I mean, I used to think it was more-around 40, I think I was overestimating. I think its more like 3 which is very disappointing.
  • Q: Here's a line from Maupassant "The essence of life is the smile of round female bottoms under the shadow of cosmic boredom." Any thoughts? Rob: That's an absolutely true quote. Round female bottoms are very much a miracle. (Tink: This was my favorite comment.)
  • Q: What would have to happen to make tonight unforgettable? Anything you want. Rob: I just got a little dog, so I'm having a very girly night here with my pup, a rescue mutt. it's going to sound like I'm making this up.
It's a good thing Bel Ami is coming out April 22nd. These questions really help the promotion of that movie. High five, Elle!

I'm led to believe they can redeem themselves because the last line in the picture is another question so there has to be a page two. Guess we'll have to wait for it to hit stands. It's a bizarre info though, non? It was like they were trying to bait Rob into saying, "Twilight sucks balls! I hate my life and want to kill anything in my path!" You can tell Rob's humor with the responses...or did he really have a baby and I missed that? ;)
