 photo BerlinRobertPattinsonPortrait.jpg

Since Rob is not in Berlin yet (he arrives for Life promo) and we have no pictures of Rob as T.E. Lawrence (the world is cruel), we have to "settle" for this knock out portrait during Berlinale 2012.

Here are the highlights about Rob and we'll be updating as they keep rolling in:

Excerpt from The Independent:
T.E. Lawrence himself appears (played in eccentric, tongue in cheek fashion by Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame)...Pattinson’s performance, meanwhile, is comic and a very long way removed from Peter O'Toole. He plays Lawrence Of Arabia as a sharp-tongued, sardonic figure who can see through the pretensions of his bosses and colleagues.
Excerpt from The Playlist:
In fact, of the actors not overwhelmed by the heavy sense that "we're playing old-timey dudes in old-timey duds," Robert Pattinson (though the duds do sit awkwardly on him), for words about whom, I'll face the fact that probably 75% of the readers of this review will have expressly tuned in, is most surprising. The part is small. He only has a few scenes, but helped by the writing of TE Lawrence as an ego-driven but lighthearted, whimsical brainbox, he actually sounds like he believes he is living in modern times, not some anachronistic recreation. And so even when he has ponderous words to say, such as when he quotes Jefferson's famous, damning line, "I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just," he does so lightly, conversationally — unconvincing costume aside, he lets a little life in.
Excerpt from The Guardian:
Perhaps in flight from her internal emotional turmoil, Bell cultivates her passionate interest in the Bedouin tribesmen and displaces her need for romantic love outwards – into the desert. There she is to encounter Lawrence himself, played boyishly by Robert Pattinson. He looks a little self-conscious in the headdress – though perhaps no more self-conscious than Lawrence himself looked in it. His appearance got a few laughs from the Berlin festival audience, but Pattinson carried off this (minor) role well enough.
Excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter:
The brief but significant appearances of Robert Pattinson as T.E. Lawrence
Excerpt from Criticwire:
Robert Pattinson gets relatively high marks for his brief turn as the bonafide T.E. Lawrence
Excerpt from The People's Movies:
With the exception of Robert Pattinson as T. E. Lawrence, her male counterparts are somewhat lacking.
Excerpt from Indiewire:
The most ironic aspect of the enterprise is that the one man with whom Bell conducts believable, intriguing dealings is the one upon whom her sex-appeal has zero effect: none other than T.E. Lawrence himself, played with a plummy-voiced knowingness by Robert Pattinson. Pattinson doesn't get very much screen time here, but manages to come up with a Lawrence a universe away from Peter O'Toole's iconic portrayal - a kind of proto-Beat rebel in fancy Arab duds - and his dialogue exchanges with Kidman have a little touch of Steed and Mrs. Peel that at least gives their scenes some kind of oomph.
Excerpt from The Film Stage:
She encounters various historical figures, such as T.E. Lawrence (Robert Pattinson, in hilariously pretentious form)

Another eight films have been selected for the Competition Programme of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival. The Festival runs from Feb 5-15 and of course we'll be hoping that Rob will be making an appearance!

Queen of the Desert

World premiere

Deadline:

Werner Herzog’s epic Queen Of The Desert will also add star power at the Berlinale Palast with Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Damian Lewis and Robert Pattinson. The film is the story of Gertrude Bell, the Lawrence of Arabia of female diplomats and political attachĂ© for the British Empire at the dawn of the 20th century.

The Hollywood Reporter:

Germany's biggest film fest has announced a slew of new competition titles for its 65th edition, including Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert.

In Queen of the Desert, the one-time Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson plays Lawrence of Arabia, aka T.E. Lawrence, alongside star Nicole Kidman as explorer, writer, archeologist and British Intelligence officer Gertrude Bell. Queen of the Desert also features Homeland's Damian Lewis as Charles Doughty-Wylie, a married British officer who had an unconsummated affair with Bell, and James Franco as Henry Cadogan.

Screen International:

The 65th Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 5-15) has added a further eight titles to its Competition programme, ahead of the complete line-up next week.

The films, which originate from across Europe, Asia, the US and the Middle East, include the world premiere of Queen of the Desert, Werner Herzog’s biopic based on the life of British explorer Gertrude Bell.

Nicole Kidman plays the 19th century explorer, known as the female Lawrence of Arabia, and her co-stars include James Franco, Damian Lewis and Robert Pattinson (as TE Lawrence).

The Film Stage:

With our most-anticipated film of the year leading the line-up, this year’s Berlin Film Festival has announced more titles to join the slate. Notably Werner Herzog’s first narrative feature in half-a-decade, Queen of the Desert, will be premiering there. The story of legendary cartographer Gertrude Bell features Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson, James Franco, and Damian Lewis.

Indiewire:

The 65th Berlin International Film Festival added eight films to its main competition this morning, including new titles from Werner Herzog, Benoit Jacquot, Bill Condon and Jafar Panahi. The festival also added an additional 14 films to its Generation selection, which is comprised of features and shorts aimed at youths.

Herzog will be in Berlin with "Queen of the Desert" starring Robert Pattinson as T.E. Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia), alongside Nicole Kidman as British Intelligence officer Gertrude Bell.

Robert Pattinson Scores A Hat Trick On The Film Stage's '100 Most Anticipated Movies of 2015' List

Robert Pattinson Scores A Hat Trick On The Film Stage's '100 Most Anticipated Movies of 2015' List

We're always excited to see all of Rob's movies but it's great to see that others are as excited to see his work now too.
No less than THREE of his movies made The Film Stages '100 Most Anticipated Movies of 2015' List.
Life made an appearance on there as did Queen of the Desert and completing the hat trick is The Trap.

Here's what they had to say about each movie:

 photo Screen-Shot-2014-06-06-at-13117-AM.png
14. QUEEN OF THE DESERT
With rumors that it would arrive last year, the wait continues for Werner Herzog’s first narrative feature in half-a-decade, the story of legendary cartographer Gertrude Bell may be hitting theaters this year. Led by Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson, James Franco, and Damian Lewis, Queen of the Desert follows Bell, a diplomatic explorer, who negotiated with Arab nations and helped establish the countries of Iraq and Jordan. Considering that Herzog is the man who gave us such epics as Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre, we’re looking forward to a return with what looks to be his most visually ambitious work in some time. With fall line-ups getting announced shortly, check back for updates. – Jordan R.
 photo RobDaneHQ.jpg
96. LIFE
After premiering his latest drama, A Most Wanted Man, at Sundance last year, we thought director Anton Corbijn might return to Park City, but barring any last-minute announcements that looks to not be the case. Hopefully coming later this year, as scripted by Luke Davies, Life centers on the relationship between James Dean (Dane DeHaan) and Life Magazine‘s Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson), the latter of whom had been tasked with capturing the up-and-coming actor less than a year before his rise to stardom and tragic death. – Jordan R
21. THE TRAP
After the success of Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine is ready to dive right into his next, “most ambitious” project yet. While little is known about The Trap, we do know that it will likely star Jamie Foxx, Robert Pattinson, and Benicio del Toro in a revenge, gangster drama that follows a “multi-generational family of criminals in the South.” Korine is set to begin shooting the film in Miami in the coming months. With Spring Breakers introducing Korine to a wider audience than ever before, could The Trap be his next big step into the cultural spotlight? – Dan G.

I liked that last line...."Expect a Cannes premiere..."
Oh we will. We most definitely will.

Dazed had some positive commentary in their Films To Watch For list and see Life as one to "clean up when award season comes around."
Hey U Guys had nothing but great things to say while including QOTD on their list of Must See 2015 Films Which Are Still A Secret: With such a skilled filmmaker at the helm and a brilliantly dense cast relaying the life and legacy of Bell, this looks set to be a hallmark release in 2015.
Thompson on Hollywood has QOTD as a festival hopeful on their 45 Films We're Looking Forward To In 2015 and IonCinema has Queen of the Desert as one of their most anticipated foreign films of 2015. Again...I'm liking the last line...

Werner Herzog about Robert Pattinson as T.E. Lawrence: "He is a smart man and the choice was quite natural."

 photo WernerHerzogampRobertPattinson.jpg

We have two films to look forward to in 2015 and both of them have Rob tackling real life characters. T.E. Lawrence is arguably the better known character and Werner Herzog has nothing but praise to give Rob for his take on the iconic figure in Queen of the Desert.

Translation by PAW of Bande Ă  Part:
Can you tell us more about your next movie 'Queen Of The Desert'?
In less than ten days, I will start the mixing. The filming and editing are completed and I should be able to put an end to the movie in the first days of december.I don't know where or when it will be shown for the first time.
The cast is really impressive: Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson...
They all really wanted to work with me. I was asked why I chose Pattinson. It's not a big part, and it matched perfectly. I needed an englishman who still looks like a schoolboy but which is very smart. He plays Lawrence of Arabia, but at the age of 22, on an archeological site. Kidman, who plays the main role is wondering what that kid has to do in a place like this, and an archeologist tells her that this kid has a PhD.Pattinson is really good in that role. He is a smart man and the choice was quite natural.
If you understand French, here's the original text:
On m’a demandĂ© pourquoi j’avais choisi Pattinson.

NEW Interview: Robert Pattinson Talks LA, 'Maps To The Stars', Working With Auteur Directors & More In Today's UK Independent

Rob spoke the the UK's Independent newspaper while at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month. The interview is in today's paper and you can read the transcript of it below.

Maps To The Stars is also their Film of The Week

image host
Transcript:
Maps To The Stars is the title of the new David Cronenberg film starring Robert Pattinson. It refers to the Hollywood cartography that informs tourists of where to find the homes of their fabourite actors.

Anyone buying one of these plans will be disappointed if they are looking for the home of Britain's most famous vampire. Last year the actor sold his mansion in Griffith Park, near the Hollywood sign in central Los Angeles, saying he was too young to be tied to such a lavish property and instead wanted to lay low and live life to his needs rather than his means.

"The house was amazing," he says of the abode he sold for $6.37m (£3.9m). "I wasn't really thinking when I got it. I had been living in and out of hotels, and when you have money for he first time." When he says money, he means a mind-boggling amount. He reportedly received $20m for the final part of Twilight, the vampire saga that made him a global name, and made his private life public fodder. Pattinson says selling the house is part of a general disassociation with Hollywood. "If you are the kind of person who needs to to be pushed into doing something, Hollywood is not the right place to be, so I think I might be done with Los Angeles."

We meet on the day on the Toronto Film Festival of Maps To The Stars and there is a yearning for Barnes, West London, where he grew up. His Dad imported vintage cars from America, and his mother worked for a modelling agency, a profession Pattinson entered just before he hit his teens. "I think I need to spend more time in London, or just move around a bit more. I've been in LA for six or seven years and it's weird. The more you stay, especially as an actor , the more you think you'll be missing out on something by leaving, but you are not really. It's a fun city, but you are permanently on holiday. I feel like I've been on holiday since I was 22."

It seems the 28 year old has enough of the focus being on his romantic life rather than his career. His relationship with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart dominated headlines before a very public split, and now there's endless speculation that he's going out with every girl who just happens to be in the same room. The fascination with his love life must be frustrating because, since Twilight ended, not many column inches have been expanded on the impressive resume hes been building.

In addition to twice working with Croneneberg, he gave one of his best performances as a left-for-dead armed robber in David Michod's Australian outback thriller The Rover and he's just finished playing TE Lawrence for Werner Herzog and photographer Dennis Stock for Anton Corbijn. On the horizon is an adaptation of The Lost City Of Z, to be directed by James Gray.

The impressive list has come about because Pattinson has been seeking out auteurs: "In the past two years, I've done stuff just for the director and not really thought much about the script," he says. "Now I'm swinging it back a little, trying to get a medium between the two."

He's thankful to Cronenberg for taking a chance on him, especially when people wondered if all he had to offer was a blank stare. "Working with Cronenberg just opened stuff up. People approached you in a different way. Now I"ve done other things and it kind of works on a bit of a roll, working with auteur-y guys."

There is an odd link between Cosmopolis and Maps to the Stars, in that in Cosmopolis he played a financial hotshot who went around New York in his limo for pretty much the whole movie, whereas in Maps he plays a limo driver who wants to be a screenwriter. Pattinson quips, “It’s a bit weird. It’s like Cosmopolis was the audition for this: ‘Well he fits into a limo, why look for someone else?’”

Maps To The Stars is about the oddballs that populate Hollywood. Pattinson has an affair with a PA (Mia Wasikowska) and then memorably has sex in a car with her boss, Havana - Julianne Moore won the best actress gong at Cannes for her portrayal of an actress whose best days are behind her. It's a Hollywood that Pattinson knows all too well; "I've met characters that are pretty similar. Everyone's saying the films biting, but I think it's sympathetic to a host of characters. Women like Havana: in reality people would despise her, they don't have friends for a reason, but I don't think anyone comes out of the movie hating her and that's testament to Julianne. It's a bunch of weirdos who spend time self-obsessing and talking about it afterwards."

The actor says he's not exactly in a position to talk; " I self-obsess a lot. When I'm doing interviews I'm always waiting for some stupid remark to come out." When he first entered the room, his opening gambit was, "I'm so bad at doing press junkets," said with a glint in his eye that gave the impression he thinks much of it is a charade.

"I used to be so dumb in interviews; try to make jokes all the time, and everyone is thinking, 'this guy is a moron, he's just been saying dumb stuff for years and years'."

Herzog is a director he's long admired and he jumped at the chance to play  TE Lawrence in his Gertrrude Bell biography Queen Of The Desert, starring Nicole Kidman as the British archaeologist who helped draw the Iraq/Jordan border at the turn of the 19th century. "It's sort of close to the real guy, it's certainly not Lawrence of Arabia-like," he says. "Its a small part as well," which suits his just fine: "It's quite nice doing small parts. The film isn't totally reliant on what I do, so I get to work with who I want and it's not my fault if it doesn't make any money."

Maps to the Stars is out TODAY

Robert Pattinson's Queen of the Desert, Life and Maps To The Stars are expected for fall festivals!

Robert Pattinson's Queen of the Desert, Life and Maps To The Stars are expected for fall festivals!

 photo RobDaneHQ.jpg

The Toronto International Film Festival (Sept. 4-14) line up will be announced on July 22nd and the  Venice Film Festival (Aug. 27-Sept. 6) line up will be announced on July 24th.

Rob's next 3 films are rumored and expected to show up at one of these fall fests.

Maps To The Stars going to TIFF seems like a foregone conclusion at this point. It's expected to have its North American premiere there and then released later in the fall.

Queen of the Desert producers have been dropping teases. Nick Raslan called QOTD "a true epic" and Cassian Elwes called the film a total winner and said they'd get distribution at the fall festivals. The Playlist added Telluride and NYFF to the mix for QOTD possibilities too. Elwes is hoping for US release this year and Raslan also shared a still from the film.

Life is the last Rob film to be a part of the fall fest rumors and it's the one I'm looking forward to the most. One guess why....

Anton Corbijn revealed that Philip Seymour Hoffman was planning on being in Life before his passing. The Playlist speculates that he could have played Dennis Stock's editor (now played by Joel Edgerton) or Jack Warner (played by Ben Kinglsey).

The Playlist also suggested that "Life is expected to be among the announcements for TIFF and Venice when they arrive next week". This would definitely be a pleasant surprise if it turns out to be true. VERY pleasant.

 photo Pleeease.gif

As for Rob's fall filming schedule, it looks like we'll see him film Idol's Eye and The Childhood of a Leader. TCOAL's time frame jumps around between September and November and IE jumps between October and November. We'll see how they shape up the closer we get since schedules on indies change frequently. The Lost City of Z was last scheduled for January 2015 but there seems to be a conflict with Benedict Cumberbatch's schedule (he's slated to now be working on Sherlock) so like the others, we just have to wait and see.

 photo waiting.gif

That's all that the updates on Rob's film slate for now. We'll keep you posted next week when the lineups are announced for the film festivals!

Werner Herzog calls Robert Pattinson a "wonderful, fine actor" and has respect for Twilight

photo WernerHerzogampRobertPattinson.jpg It's been quite the day for a Rob praise parade! The Rover is receiving rave reviews out of Cannes from the first press screening. Catch up HERE. And David MichĂ´d was again applauding on Rob for his performance and skills. Click HERE to read.

Now we have Werner Herzog speaking with The Playlist and he briefly mentioned Rob. It was brief but it carried a punch. Excerpt:
Herzog claims that cinema has “a very unique way” of dealing with the vampire myth, and while his high esteem for Kinski’s legacy has barred him from considering most future iterations, a surprising exception is the “Twilight” series of films. His reaction? “Not that bad, I was surprised to find.”
“We have to take it seriously that there are films out there that know how to address a 14 or 15-year-old,” he added. “This is a very special sort of approach and I couldn't do it, yet these films could. I see that much of it is silly but at the same time I respect these films. And I just worked with one of the actors, Robert Pattinson [in Herzog’s upcoming ‘Queen of the Desert’], and he's a wonderful, fine actor. He's clearly stepping out of these roles that make the teenies screech.”
Directors continue to really step up to the plate for Rob.
