Josh Safdie and Claire Denis share gracious words and funny stories about Robert Pattinson with Les Cahiers du Cinéma (France)

Josh Safdie and Claire Denis share gracious words and funny stories about Robert Pattinson with Les Cahiers du Cinéma (France)

image hostPAW snatched up a copy of Les Cahiers du Cinéma and posted two great interviews that mentioned Rob. First up is from the upcoming Good Time directors, Josh and Benny Safdie. Josh is speaking in this excerpt and has one of those great Rob tidbits to share (are you googling the toilets?) and then of course has nothing but awesomeness to share about Rob's work ethic.

The second interview is from Claire Denis regarding High Life, one of Rob's films in pre-production. She too has kind words to share but also notes something Josh mentioned - Rob is a go-getter. We pretty much know this already from Rob's admission but I love reading it from these directors he admires. Especially Denis. She doesn't realize he's had her name on his lips for yeeeears. That's one of Rob's bucket list directors and I think it's inspiring he was unwavering in what he desired professionally.

The Safdie Brothers talk about Rob and Good Time (excerpt):

LCDC: We are one month away from the festival: is the film complete?
Josh: Almost: Oneohtrix Point Never made the music, and for the end they wanted a song en interaction with the film. We asked Iggy Pop, and he sings an incredible song in the style of Johnny Cash. Do you know how I learned we were in competition? Six months ago I was in Los Angeles at Robert Pattinson's house. He has Japanese toilet that blows hot air. I had never experienced such a thing ... I loved it so much that Robert said to me: if we go in competition, I buy you the same. And we were invited out of competition. Six hours before the press conference, we had a meeting to find out if we were really out of competition, because at the same time we were invited to La Quinzaine, and Rob was trying to contact me over and over again, but i was at this meeting, and suddenly he sent me a text message with a photo of the toilet! Thierry Frémaux had just announced him we were in competition. I was extremely surprised! It was extraordinary.
...
LCDC: This is the first time you work with a star.
Josh: Pattinson is English, and the actors around him come from the world of the film. He spent five months working on his character. He doesn't have the experience of this life. I wrote him a biography from the day he was born to the first minutes of the film. We wanted to shoot into the streets, but wherever we went, people wanted to take a picture of him. We developed the appearance of his character so that nobody recognizes him. But he is so professional! He is never complaining. It's him who contacted us. He had seen a picture of Mad Love in New York on the Internet, he asked to see the movie, he saw it, and told us: whatever you want me to do, I will do it.

Claire Denis talks Rob and getting High Life going:
image host image host
LCDC: What about your science fiction project?
Claire Denis: It's a SF project, but in my own way, very software (laughs)! (...) I'm strarting the preparation in a few weeks. It's an English-language movie that will be filmed in Germany. (...) It takes place in the space, not on Earth. This is a project I have had in my mind for the last fifteen years. At the time I thought of Vincent Gallo to play the leading role but the producers are often afraid of him. One day Robert Pattinson contacted the person who was doing the English casting. I was intrigued but I tought he was too young. Every time I went to London to meet some actors, he was there. His desire to work with me has never faltered. And now he is a little less young and it's perfect.
LCDC: He is one of those actors whose we can feel the intelligence when they play.
Claire Denis: Yes, absolutely. He has a lot of humor too. I tought it was so strange that this young man wanted so much to work with me when he could do whatever he wanted. I was almost embarrassed. But his unwavering envy and our mutual recognition have done their work.

VIDEO: LCI/My TF1 News Interview Robert Pattinson

UPDATE: Added transcript of the interview below
VIDEO: LCI/My TF1 News Interview Robert Pattinson

It's dubbed but if you listen really carefully you can hear what he says.

There's a small bit of Rob at the very start but the interview starts properly at the 5:00 mark.

Transcript: (thanks to LeRPattzClub)

At 5.00 – 11.20

Reporter: You're here to present 2 movies, Maps to the Stars and The Rover. In the Rover, you're playing a naive guy. What attracted you in this character?

Rob: The script is so different. It's completely different from everything I've ever done before. I don't know what exactly but something magical happened with this part. I couldn't tell you what but I immediately related to this part as soon as the first reading.

Reporter: Did you fight to get this part since it's so far from Twilight and from the perception we have of you?

Rob: Yeah. I wanted it so badly . I auditioned twice and I hate that. I'm so bad at auditioning. But this time it was different. I didn't want to fail and lose this part. I didn't want anyone else to get it. But the auditions for this part were so weird. They took place in Los Angeles at the director's house and I was there sitting in his living room and I didn't know if what I was doing was good and could please him. But yeah I had to fight for this role.

Reporter: Do you have the feeling that you still have to fight to prove you're not the guy from Twilight anymore? That you can play something different?

Rob: Yeah but all the actors had to deal with it in order to not play the same part everytime. I kind of like it. Sometimes it's so crazy and out of portion how people want to see you fail. But I like it. It gives me energy and the rage to move on.

Reporter: Is it easier to get a part or is it still a fight?

Rob: Every single part which I played, I had to take auditions. Now , to tell you the truth , what's different between these 2 movies and Twilight is that they can finance them just because of my name. So it helps. But you really have to fight to get a part. You still have to audition for everything.

Reporter: What was the biggest challenge for you with your part in The Rover because we don't know anything about your character. We discover him at the beginning and he's hurt, he doesn't know where to go so he gets stuck with the other guy. What was difficult?

Rob: Probably the 1st scene, the one where they meet for the 1st time. I think it was the 1st scene I shot for the movie. This character is a bit crazy and to play him in such a tense moment , when for example he believes he's going to die, it's so hard. He's a simple mind and we don't how how extreme we can be with him. It was kind of tough to do it but it was so much fun. The part was so funny because you can do whatever you want.

(extract from Maps to the Stars)

Reporter: You're also starring in Cosmo.. no Maps to the Stars by David Cronenberg. After working with him on Cosmopolis, how would you describe your working relationship with him?

Rob: With Cronenberg, it's really fun. I get on well with him. I like hanging out with him. I accepted to play on Maps to the Stars before I read the script. I want to be in all in his movies. He's telling interesting stuff. The atmosphere on his sets is always relaxed. Everything seems so easy and fun. His movies are really cool.

Reporter: You're playing an actor who faces hardship and who tries to have his break. He's a limo driver. It's ironic , isn't it? To give you this part?

Rob: Maybe ! What's funny in MTTS is that I'm the only normal person. The others are completely crazy. I like playing this pretty shitty actor. It's kind of fun.

Reporter: Is your conception of Hollywood similar to the one in the movie: as a pitiless, mean and funny universe? Because you are familiar with this universe?

Rob: Yes I guess MTTS gives a rather harsh conception of Hollywood. And a lot of people think it has a dark side. But most of the time it's a rather funny place and a very pleasant place to work in.

Reporter: How do you feel to be here in this film festival with these 2 movies?

Rob: It's amazing ! The atmosphere is electric during the screenings. The audience doesn't hesitate to show their feelings if they don't like it. It's in the very first 10 minutes. It's kind of scary watching stuff but it's exciting.

Reporter: Are you preparing....

And the crew is stopping her because her time with Rob is over.

Thanks LeRPattzClub for the heads up

And it looks like Rob charmed the socks off of the reporter. She gave him the "Palme d'Or" for the nicest guy at Cannes during the press junket. Yeap she Robsessed alright. Check out the video below (from 3.50 to 4.30)

AUDIO Interview: Robert Pattinson Talks To RTL About Hollywood & The Industry

AUDIO Interview: Robert Pattinson Talks To RTL About Hollywood & The Industry

Unfortunately the interview is dubbed BUT we get to hear his gorgeous voice right at the start for a couple of seconds and we get that glorious laugh at the end.
Don't they know they're breaking one of the commandments by dubbing over Rob?

Anyway here's the interview and there's a translation just below it.
Rob is at the 7:40 mark

Translation
"There's definitely that kind of 'we don't give a shit about anything apart from money'. People are like that in LA but there are plenty of people who don't think like that and to be honest I've only had good experiences in Hollywood since I've worked in this industry.
Of course, I've seen people lose themselves but I don't think it's Hollywood's fault but due to their own nerosis. This place attracts a lot of crazies who leave even crazier. But really it's really fun if you're not nuts *laughs*"

"The Rough Hardness Of Guy Pearce Goes Perfectly With The Lost Innocence Brought Out By Robert Pattinson"

REVIEW of The Rover ~ "The Rough Hardness Of Guy Pearce Goes Perfectly With The Lost Innocence Brought Out By Robert Pattinson"

We already saw the review for Maps To The Stars from Studio CineLive.
Now here's their review of The Rover

 photo CL4.jpg

Translation:
A road movie with ironic darkness.

David Michôd likes contrasts. Discovered with 'Animal Kingdom', a psychological thriller, almost behind closed doors, visually dark, we find him three years later with a post apocalyptic western located in the Australian outback, overwhelmed by the sun. But this light is misleading. 'The Rover' works in the same tantalizing way as his first feature film. (... Synopsis ...)

Accompanied by an anxiogenic and intriguing soundtrack, this road movie is terribly ironic especially for his darkness. Subtly blowing hot and cold, Michôd manages to create empathetic conditions toward the selfish and monstrous central character in the literal sense. Until a disconcerting final scene, but finalizing the work of a this master of cynicism, so assured that it becomes fascinating. In the main roles, the rough hardness of Guy Pearce goes perfectly with lost innocence brought out by Robert Pattinson. Any resemblance to any existing characters and economic situations ... or about to be are obviously anything but accidental.
