AACTA nominates Robert Pattinson for Best Supporting Actor in The Rover!

 photo RobRover.png

This is FANTASTIC!

AACTA (Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts) announced their nominees and not only did Rob snatch up a Best Supporting Actor nomination, The Rover scored 7 nominations total!

 photo ScreenShot2014-12-02at83807PM.png

The ceremony is January 29, 2015. Rob might be filming The Childhood of a Leader but we'll keep a look out.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ROB AND THE ROVER TEAM!!!!

A24 includes Robert Pattinson and The Rover on their "For Your Consideration" awards website

A24, the US distributor behind The Rover, has a website dedicated to their award-worthy films.
The Rover is there along with Under The Skin, Locke, Obvious Child, Enemy and A Most Violent Year.

 photo Groot1.gif

When you click the poster for The Rover, you get to see their "Consider" page and you know who's on it. ;)

 photo ScreenShot2014-11-16at111644AM.png

 photo EXCITE_1.gif

Yes! It's great. But.....well it's not exactly a campaign for the film to have it on the website. Only A Most Violent Year has the "Screenings" page, listing multiple screenings happening in NYC and LA. That's typical of an active campaign for awards. Screenings, ads, schmoozing with voters, etc. None of that is happening for The Rover. So this is nice to see but that's all it is at this point.

 photo Eh.gif

I pissed in the party punch, didn't I. We can go back to dancing groot because Rob really was one of the best supporting actors this year and it's cool to see him listed on the distributor's site.

ROBsessed Quickie: Robert Pattinson considered in Best Supporting Actor Oscar race by Thompson on Hollywood

 photo TheRoverSmashup.gif

Long shot but not forgotten! I love this because my expectations are so low. We know A24 isn't launching a campaign for The Rover so critics that remember Rob's performance are pretty special to me. Plus, I like Anne Thompson's blog.

This is just a quick excerpt from the start of the article and then the screen cap of Rob's inclusion. Visit the post if you want to read about other films.

From Indiewire/Thompson on Hollywood:
Post-"Interstellar," we update the state of the Oscar race for 2015
Going into the season, only a handful of pre-fall movies have Oscar potential; their handlers will rely on critics and guild groups to keep them in the conversation over the long haul....

 photo ScreenShot2014-11-09at65234PM.png

Here's hoping Rob is kept in the conversation!

Thanks Flavia!

We aren't the only ones that would make a case for Robert Pattinson to get a Best Supporting Actor nomination

We aren't the only ones that would make a case for Robert Pattinson to get a Best Supporting Actor nomination

 photo RobRover.png

I've tried to remain as objective as possible and I really do feel like a strong case could have been made for Rob receiving supporting actor recognition in The Rover. That race isn't as hotly contested right now as other categories and it would have been awesome to see Rob campaigning for a role he was exceptional in. This article popped up and echoed many of our sentiments around these parts. If you've followed The Rover Reviews on the blog, you know Rob's performance as Rey was widely applauded. From the Latin Post:
Oscars 2015 Predictions: Why "Twilight" Star Robert Pattinson Should Be Nominated for Best Supporting Actor This Year
The Academy Awards race is heating up with many front runner contenders. However, a number of categories are still up for grabs and a number of films have been ignored throughout despite great reviews and artistic achievements.
One of these films is "The Rover" by David Michod. Back in 2010, the director made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival with his film "Animal Kingdom." The movie went on to get an Oscar nomination for Jacki Weaver and the director became sought-after.However, when "The Rover" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this past summer, reviews were positive but buzz was low.
When it premiered in theaters, A24 failed to really give it a decent marketing campaign and the box office results were not very good."The Rover's" results essentially ended any aspirations of an Oscar campaign, but now that pundits have noted that Supporting Actor race is empty, A24 should focus its energies on campaigning Robert Pattinson's masterful performance for the Academy Award race.
Latin Post raved about his performance and stated, "Pattinson is unrecognizable" and "unsettling."Other critics agreed with the Toronto Star stating, "This minimalist gem affords a chance to see ex-Twilight star Robert Pattinson at his dramatic best."
Pattinson may be young for the Academy to recognize, but his work is astonishing and the fact that he was able to crossover from mainstream films to Indie art house films shows his commitment to his craft.
Click HERE to continue reading. Major award nominations are pretty much out of the question since there isn't going to be a campaign for The Rover. We'll keep a lookout though for potential accolades in critics corners similar to Best of Cosmopolis 2012. After all, they were the ones that praised Rob's work so profusely.

Robert Pattinson is one of the 100 most valuable stars of 2014

Robert Pattinson is one of the 100 most valuable stars of 2014

So Vulture complied their annual list of the 100 Most Valuable Stars of 2014.
Rob is on it. He's #91 out of 100.

 photo HUMPH.gif

I could get real bitchy about this but that's not being realistic. Rob isn't doing studio stuff right now. His franchise is a couple years behind him. Only indies are on his horizon. So maybe I should just be grateful he's even on the list??

 photo Disgruntled.gif

Exactly. I could argue against the data for a few actors that came before Rob but

Robert Pattinson's Queen of the Desert, Life and Maps To The Stars are expected for fall festivals!

Robert Pattinson's Queen of the Desert, Life and Maps To The Stars are expected for fall festivals!

 photo RobDaneHQ.jpg

The Toronto International Film Festival (Sept. 4-14) line up will be announced on July 22nd and the  Venice Film Festival (Aug. 27-Sept. 6) line up will be announced on July 24th.

Rob's next 3 films are rumored and expected to show up at one of these fall fests.

Maps To The Stars going to TIFF seems like a foregone conclusion at this point. It's expected to have its North American premiere there and then released later in the fall.

Queen of the Desert producers have been dropping teases. Nick Raslan called QOTD "a true epic" and Cassian Elwes called the film a total winner and said they'd get distribution at the fall festivals. The Playlist added Telluride and NYFF to the mix for QOTD possibilities too. Elwes is hoping for US release this year and Raslan also shared a still from the film.

Life is the last Rob film to be a part of the fall fest rumors and it's the one I'm looking forward to the most. One guess why....

Anton Corbijn revealed that Philip Seymour Hoffman was planning on being in Life before his passing. The Playlist speculates that he could have played Dennis Stock's editor (now played by Joel Edgerton) or Jack Warner (played by Ben Kinglsey).

The Playlist also suggested that "Life is expected to be among the announcements for TIFF and Venice when they arrive next week". This would definitely be a pleasant surprise if it turns out to be true. VERY pleasant.

 photo Pleeease.gif

As for Rob's fall filming schedule, it looks like we'll see him film Idol's Eye and The Childhood of a Leader. TCOAL's time frame jumps around between September and November and IE jumps between October and November. We'll see how they shape up the closer we get since schedules on indies change frequently. The Lost City of Z was last scheduled for January 2015 but there seems to be a conflict with Benedict Cumberbatch's schedule (he's slated to now be working on Sherlock) so like the others, we just have to wait and see.

 photo waiting.gif

That's all that the updates on Rob's film slate for now. We'll keep you posted next week when the lineups are announced for the film festivals!

LA Times names Robert Pattinson one of 30 actors under 30 who matter

LA Times published a list of 30 actors under 30 who matter. It's a great list but only one matters to us!

The editorial is good too. We only included a few excerpts but click HERE to read in his entirety.
LA Times: Critic Betsy Sharkey offers her personal list of 30 actors under 30 who matter to movies, starting with the youngest.

There are always those actors who rise above early on....They not only make an imprint in the role but they also tantalize about what they might do next.

...

Such actors have that sense of promise — one of the first things I look for when I see a new face on-screen — and it became a key factor in compiling my list of 30 under 30 who matter, members of a generation more interested in the art than the artifice. The ones I've singled out represent a diverse array of talent. But there is a tonal quality as well that resonates through the list, an earnestness and directness in the actors' approach to the work, more of what we think of as an indie style even when the project is in blockbuster territory or playing with extremes of sci-fi fantasy.

It's a generational gene pool that is particularly rich in talent, so rich that limiting the list to 30 has required painful cuts.

...

Whatever perks of fame and fortune might come their way as a result — and several tied to mega franchises in "Harry Potter" and "Twilight" have had explosive head starts — this crew seems to truly care about the craft.

Yet at some point, a career in the movie industry becomes a question of staying power.

...

Pattinson is finally gaining traction with a string of demanding roles in the offing and an impressive turn in the just-released "The Rover," a case of a gritty turn rising above the project.

The final measure for me in weighing whom to include is that sense of trajectory. It's the sense that the roles right around the corner are likely to push the actors to creative and artistic higher ground — that these 30 under 30 won't accede only to what Hollywood, that great lover of youth, desires but that they will also take on a wide range of roles and find ways within each to make them their own — essentially, the Meryl Streep model.

...

By the way, for the 30 under 30 who've made my list, there are no statuettes, no red carpet. Just a "well done" from a critic who appreciates those who respect the craft, to those whose artistry is making the movies a better place to spend $14 on a Saturday night.

Robert Pattinson talks about wanting to work with directors, Quentin Tarantino and Jacques Audiard

photo 7bdef5c0-c37d-445e-b193-e128de27b20f.jpg From europe1 (translated with Reverso with minor editing by us. They had Rob as an American actor...OK):
CANNES - The actor pursues his metamorphosis by deviating from blockbusters. Present in Cannes for two films in competition, he confided in Europe1.
Portrait. Robert Pattinson is unrecognizable in his new roles. This year, the English actor known for his role in Twilight is present in Cannes for two films in competition.
At first, Maps To The Stars, the latest David Cronenberg, together with Julianne Moore. Robert Pattinson embodies a limousine chauffeur, whose dream is to become a scriptwriter.
The actor is also in The Rover by David Michôd, in which Robert Pattinson plays a pursued criminal.
New direction. Robert Pattinson's career takes a new direction since the last two years. The actor played a young billionaire in Cosmopolis, also by David Cronenberg. A collaboration which reveals him to the eyes of the directors of art films.
"I am open to everything."
"I do not believe that I really changed, I just have a lot of luck," the actor to the microphone of Europe1 confides.
"It is incredible that happens to me, it is completely crazy," assures the actor, who does not however close the door in the big productions, in particular in the continuation(suite) of the legend Twilight:
"I am opened to everything! But I am too old now. Having said that, if it is Quentin Tarantino who directs it, I shall be obliged to say yes!"
Jacques Audiard. "I do not choose any more of my films based on money or prosperity, and that makes me really very happy", pursues Robert Pattinson, who dreams to collaborate with Jacques Audiard. A change of direction which does not prevent the teenagers from continuing to worship the actor. On Sunday, some waited for him several hours in front of the hotel where their idol gave interviews.
It's clear and has been for a bit now that Rob's professional path is one that allows him to work with great directors. Hopefully, if he keeps mentioning Audiard, he'll get the opportunity to work with him, a favorite of Rob's. Click HERE if you missed an earlier interview that Rob talked about his director plan!

Did you know THE ROVER trailer is well past half a million views and should hit 1 million in a couple of days? Give it another watch to get you in the mood for this movie update post.

First up is The Playlist making me the love by having this article - Summer Movie Preview: 40 Most Anticipated Films - and then going ahead and making THE ROVER number 1!

 photo RobTheRover.jpg
1. "The Rover"
Cast: Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy
Synopsis: In a war-torn future beset by financial collapse, a man trudges across the Australian desert to locate his stolen car and secure the mysterious cargo found inside.
Why It’s Worth Seeing: This is the first film for director David Michôd since his riveting debut “Animal Kingdom.” It’s been described as an existential western, and sees him reteam with Guy Pearce, with heartthrob Robert Pattinson and character actor favorite Scoot McNairy also on board. Michôd's debut captured the sweeping scope of early Michael Mann mixed with Werner Herzog’s anthropological analysis of human behavior, crafting a debut that was both terrifying and utterly unforgettable. While he’s taking things in a vaguely sci-fi direction here, Michôd has promised that this will be a relatively grounded affair, a crime picture in the outback that could be indicative of a contemporary mashup of “Wake In Fright” (with the idea of an outsider stranded in the outback) and “Mad Max” (with its emphasis on vehicular action). It's still under wraps beyond some impressive trailers, but more than anything else, we're hopeful that a Midnight Screening premiere at Cannes bodes for this being something truly impressive. We're tantalizingly close to finding out.
Release Date: June 13th.
You should totally check out the full list just in case your heart is still in tact. Reading all the movies THE ROVER beat will make your heart burst completely out of your chest. I'm currently typing with my heart spilled out everywhere. My god...that's morbid. Let's move on although the news continues to be good and my heart continues to swell.

 photo DaneRob.jpg

LIFE director, Anton Corbijn, has a website and while he was filming last month, he updated his site to drop a little gem of awesomeness:
This photograph is our first publicity shot from the film LIFE that i am currently shooting in Canada and USA. It is the story of James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock, set in early 1955. In the back of the car sits Jimmy as played by Dane DeHaan and in the passenger seat is Dennis, played by Robert Pattinson. Both guys are fantastic and are giving the film very good energy despite the very harsh winter we encountered in Canada.
We could have told him that. Rob is forever fantastic. Everyone else just needs to get the memo. ;)

WorkingRob is currently in transition. Or maybe he's just busy trying to figure out which crown the King of Cannes will be wearing next month. Either way, there are a couple of upcoming Rob projects that are starting to show signs of movement.

THE CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER might be filming from June 17 to Aug. 17 in Belgium and the UK according to Crew United. The site also revealed Rob's character name - CHARLES.

 photo TCOAL.jpg

The website of costar, Michael Epp, also confirms a June start month.

 photo ScreenShot2014-04-21at122146PM.png

The time frame conflicts with some 411 RPAU and Cumberbatchweb got from Benedict Cumberbatch this month about THE LOST CITY OF Z.

Excerpt RPAustralia:
I know I know you all wanted information, but let me just say, Benedict was a little reluctant to talk about this film in detail for the simple reason that it was an upcoming project that he hadn’t filmed yet. Although when I asked him about it starting to film in July he did say “yes or possibly sooner”. He also made it a point to say that LCoZ was a difficult film and the logistics behind it are huge....So during the Q&A one wise soul did ask him about future projects (for those interested he has some TV in the pipeline with BBC and a movie in post production called “The Imitation Game“), but it’s his final comment on this question you’ll all be interested in (and I’m paraphrasing) “I am hopefully filming a movie called Lost City of Z in June”.
Tweet from Cumberbatchweb:
Other tidbits from the Benedict Cumberbatch panel include his favourite childhood movie was Ghostbusters & Lost City of Z filming in June
This could all work out since Rob is on supporting duties for both films. He seemed to film T.E. Lawrence for QUEEN OF THE DESERT in a blink. Summer 2014 for Rob might see him knocking  out both THE CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER and THE LOST CITY OF Z. We'll keep you posted of course. :)

As for Rob's other films that have been on a back burner - MISSION: BLACKLIST and HOLD ON TO ME - they remain on the back burner. No substantial movement or bait for us to bite on. Right now, I've got all of my digits crossed (making typing very difficult) for 3 things: 1. a new project is announced during Cannes 2. Rob is the lead and only star and 3. it's 24 hours long.

Ok so maybe just number 1 will happen. ;)

Hitfix labels Rob a WINNER! Robert Pattinson is "smartly focusing on his prestige credentials"

 photo Robert-Pattinson_gallery_primary.jpg

HitFix recently profiled Rob in their article, Will these artists and actors still be big stars in 5 years time, and proclaimed, "Drop the mic, Rob. You win." Cick HERE to read our post on the article.

Hitfix also labeled Rob a WINNER in a retrospect of the Twilight cast:

Best known for: "Twilight" saga
Twilight

Character: Edward Cullen

Non-Twilight highlight: "Cosmopolis"

Why: It's been rocky at the box office for Pattinson since he first broke through with the first "Twilight," but he does have the hit drama "Water for Elephants" to his credit. He's smartly focusing on his prestige credentials by reuniting with David Cronenberg on "Maps to the Stars" and is expected to appear in James Gray's "The Lost City of Z" opposite Benedict Cumberbatch. At 27 he has more than enough time to return to Hollywood studio flicks, when he's good and ready.

Robert Pattinson makes Complex list of 25 Best Actors in their 20s with notable role as Eric Packer in Cosmopolis

Robert Pattinson makes Complex list of 25 Best Actors in their 20s with notable role as Eric Packer in Cosmopolis

photo tumblr_m9ulo820ga1qkbr8xo1_400.gif Complex has complied a list of the 25 Best Actors in the business right now that are in their twenties. Rob made the cut and joined some great company!

What's also great is the write up at the start of the list. You'll find yourself beaming at the criteria and feeling a little smug since we've known how talented Rob is. And to think he hasn't shown us all he's got either. Rob's personal write up is also awesome. Just watch how you burst with pride for being a fan of such a talented actor.

From Complex:
The roster of active young Hollywood hopefuls is endless, so as an actor, how do you distinguish yourself from the your? Simple: talent. It takes more than a pretty face and the ability to deliver a line to be the next George Clooney or Brad Pitt or Denzel Washington. To make it past a a string of CW shows and/or acne commercials, it takes actual skill, palpable charisma, and the proverbial X factor. If you want to know what that looks like, just check out these young performers: The 25 Best Actors in their 20s.
Rob's write up:
Robert Pattinson Age: 27
Notable Role: Eric Packer in Cosmopolis (2012)
The actor who became famous for portraying a sparkly vampire is so much more than just the pretty face on your little sister's Teen Bop magazine. As his icy work in Cronenberg's adaption of Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis demonstrated, Pattinson is a talented actor, and more than capable of carrying a film. While the world was distracted by his romantic life, Pattinson was busy sharpening his skills in more respectable films such as Little Ashes and Bel Ami. He is currently working on smaller independent projects.
The list wasn't ranked but here are the other actors that were acknowledged:
Andrew Garfield, Danielle Radcliffe, Shia LaBeouf, Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Eisenberg, Jonah Hill, Nicholas Hoult, Jack Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund, Michael B. Jordan, Dane Dehaan, Logan Lerman, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Paul Dano, Ezra Miller, Robert Sheehan, Chris Colfer, Jesse Plemons, Brady Corbet, Miles Teller, Dave Franco, Evan Peters, Donald Glover
Click HERE if you'd like to read their write ups.

What I tell you? I love this kind of respect and acknowledgement of Rob's talent.
Are you here with me?

Philadelphia Weekly says Robert Pattinson was robbed of an Oscar Best Actor nod for Cosmopolis + Best Of 2012 lists galore!

Philadelphia Weekly says Robert Pattinson was robbed of an Oscar Best Actor nod for Cosmopolis + Best Of 2012 lists galore!

PhotobucketRecently in Philadelphia Weekly, they made a list of Oscar odds-on favorites and a hypothetical list of this year's best (and "best") films.

They paid Rob a compliment by including him in their Best Actor category and making note of his skills with DeLillo's language in the Best Adaption category:
Best Actor
Who should have won overall: As much as I want to say Denis Lavant, for his literally shape-shifting work in Holy Motors, no performance was as exciting as Tim Heidecker’s raging wealthy dickhead routine in The Comedy. And I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Robert Pattinson wuz robbed—for Cosmopolis, not Breaking Dawn 2.

Best Adapted Screenplay
What should have won overall: David Cronenberg’s script for Cosmopolis makes great a so-so Don DeLillo novel, although its real power emerged when the actors came to speak their lines. Who knew Robert Pattinson was put on earth to deliver overly-stylized DeLillo dialogue?

The recognition Cosmopolis and Rob continues to get makes you proud. This is the most recent edition of an ongoing list I'm collecting on CosmopolisFilm. The lists have evened out so it's good to share now without missing some great ones. If you click the links, some of the critics have praised the film and more. I included excerpts of the ones that dished specific praise for Rob.

  • Cinemart: Number 1 Film of 2012! "Cosmopolis is as talky as a screwball comedy and as visually wild as only cinema can be. David Cronenberg’s timely dissection of the haves and pseudo masters of the universe features an assured performance from Robert Pattinson as a man who just wants to get a haircut and ends up on an increasingly distracted quest that takes in existential angst, free market economics, a spot of casual murder, romance, sex, a prostate examination and anti-capitalism protests. A truly special work that demands you pay attention all the way, this one will stick in your head for weeks."

I've seen his past couple of recent films, and a while ago I saw Dead Ringers which I really didn't like, but with Cosmopolis I have reason to dig a bit farther back in to his filmography. I did love the talky nature of both this and A Dangerous Method, as a lover of theatre I can admire what happens when a film simply gives its actors a dense script and asks me to take it all in, though what Cronenberg does with his camera, making this confined limo just look so diverse, is much more impressive. There's this tense dichotomy between this safe space and an outer world in turmoil, that makes the collision of the two, both physically and found in Pattinson's performance, all the more intense."

  • The Password is Swordfish: 1 of 2 favorites for 2012"Cosmopolis is a dark, hilarious, yet intensely sobering reminder of the nature of things, and as a film lover, it creates a marriage between DeLillo, Cronenberg, and Pattinson that I would love to see continue."

  • Shoot the Critic: 1 of 6 in no order - "Robert Pattinson steps up to the challenge of playing the twisted, self-doubting, masochistic, and sexually insatiable protagonist. He has lots of sex, philosophizes on life, gets lectured on art and theory, faces death, kills, and gets half a hair-cut - among other activities, all shot in a typically artificial yet beautiful Cronenberg way."
  • CineTalk: 1 of 10 in no order"David Cronenberg adapts Don DeLillo’s pessimistic novel almost page for page and its tone and intellectual hyperbole is matched by Cronenberg’s cold and arresting visual palette. Robert Pattinson is outstanding in the lead role and Paul Giamatti, who only appears for a short while, delivers one of his most memorable performances."

  • The Film Stage: On a list of overlooked films in 2012"This one’s been stewing in my brain for months, and none of the reflection has tainted this film one bit; if anything, it’s only grown more valuable over time. David Cronenberg’s limousine trip into the damaged perspective of a young, emotionally hollow fat cat — played to perfection by a not-as-advertised Robert Pattinson — can’t really be considered the most accessible work of 2012, but those willing to go with its strange rhythms and mysterious internal logic are bound to get… something. While I think it’s best people make the thing out for themselves by just letting it all sit, those simply hoping for a left-of-center cinematic experience ought to find themselves more than pleased. And that’s without even considering the incredible music of Howard Shore & Metric."

  • TV without Pity: On a list of best films you may have missed"David Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson may seem like an unlikely team, but they each benefitted from their partnership. Pattinson got some much-needed acting cred for his darkly funny performance as a Master of the Universe who embarks on a surrealistic journey through the streets of New York, while Cronenberg was able to use his star's box-office power to make this challenging movie his way -- Cosmopolis features some of the most stylish and inventive direction of his career. Considering how well this movie worked out, we wouldn't object to a Cronenberg and Pattinson reunion."

There's a confidence and tragedy to Pattinson's work here, but it's toward the end, as the film's world spirals out of control, that allows Pattinson to show why he belongs on this list and keeps his name as one to continue to monitor moving forward."
