Production Notes For Robert Pattinson's 'The Rover' & 'Maps to The Stars'

Production Notes For Robert Pattinson's 'The Rover' & 'Maps to The Stars'

The Italian website FilmTV.it  has published the production notes for both The Rover & Maps to The Stars. Below are translations of the notes which I think you'll agree make for interesting reading. They shed a little more light on the plots and main characters of both films without giving away any spoilers ;)

“THE ROVER: THE CONSEQUENCES OF ECONOMIC COLLAPSE IN A NEAR FUTURE

Directed by David Michôd and based on a story written by the director himself paired with Joel Edgerton, The Rover is set in Australia a decade after the collapse of the western economy, in a context in which the mines are still active and have attracted men more desperate and dangerous and where survival is a daily struggle. The protagonist of the story is Eric, a drifter who has left everything behind and who is full of anger at the theft by a gang of his car, the only thing he had left. His only chance of finding the car is given by Rey, one of the Mebra band which was abandoned after being injured. Forced by circumstances, the two men will pair up for a trip that no one could have predicted the outcome.

Pattinson Art Work found this interview with Camille Rowe. She mentions Rob and there's also a quote from Romain Gavras that mentions Rob as well.

 photo RP2.jpg
She watches him take a bath all dressed up, eyes him up, walks naked before him, runs after him, kisses him against the metal walls of an elevator ... Stop! At this point in September 2013, putting her lips on Robert Pattinson's ones in the latest advertising of Dior Homme fragrance, directed by Romain Gavras, Camille Rowe-Pourcheresse changes status. She did not take long to realize it. Few hours after the premiere of the spot ad, she received a call from his mother. Reconstitution:
"Camille, where are you?
- In New York, on my couch with my Andrew (VanWyngarden, her fiancé and singer of the group MGMT, ed.) Why?
- I just got a Google alert saying that you went out of a hotel in Los Angeles with Robert Pattinson! "
(...)
Back to this Dior ad. Apart from some sweating that it causes to her mother, Camille Rowe-Pourcheresse sees such exposure with only positivity. "Honestly, I don't see any downside. I just now have the chance to choose to do what I want. "
(...)

"I shot with Romain Gavras four years ago by chance, to see how it was. It went very well, but I don't see myself making other films necessarily. Probably because I don't want to commit myself several weeks on the same project." Always for the benefit of the famous "freedom." A choice Romain Gavras regrets: "It's always sad to see a good actress who doesn't work. Because, really, Camille is a very good actress, she plays naturally. This is also why I asked her to do the Dior Homme ad with me. I knew she was going to help me to take Robert Pattinson where he, the great professional, would struggle to go. "
Struggle....

Romain Gavras On Working With Robert Pattinson, His Favourite Scene In The Dior Homme Advert & More

UPDATED with more from the interview
Romain Gavras On Working With Robert Pattinson, His Favourite Scene In The Dior Homme Advert & More

Romain Gavras spoke to Italy's Io Donna magazine and had (not surprisingly) had some very nice things to say about Rob.

 photo MQDiorRobertPattinson06.jpeg

Where did you get the inspiration for the video?
Working closely with the team of Dior. A hundred lifetimes in a day and the words of James Dean : " Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today. " The result is a character who goes through emotions and different places . Then, with the cinematographer André Chemetoff and production designer Jean -Michel Bertin , we looked for the best visual grammar to tell this story fragmented.

How would you describe the Dior Homme  man?
The man we want to represent is a man who is light, at ease in any situation. He could be on a deserted beach , in a luxury hotel or in an empty house which he has just moved into: he would always be himself. We wanted to move away from the stereotype of the successful, rich and arrogant, and that is why we have added details such as the eighties car that leads to a certain point. The
woman is another great way to characterize a man: in the video is a simple girl, who isn't dressed in  showy .

Tell us an anecdote , a particular story happened on the set?
We shot in Brooklyn, Rockaway Beach , immediately after the hurricane. Looking at the scene of the beach, you can note their signs , for example, the very high sand or cabins destroyed , which give the place a strange , unexpected look, in a video for a luxury perfume . Oh, and we also ended up in the sea with the car ... It took two boats and a tractor to bring it to dry land !

The main difficulty ?
Probably the fact of having to take in so many places at once . We had to run all over New York with Rob, who is a big star in Hollywood, dodging paparazzi and all the rest , not to reveal the images of the campaign prior to submission. Also, before you know Rob had no idea how it would go because we were waiting hectic , very active , and sometimes the actors do not like working under pressure. But he was great , he gave more than we asked , he was with me one hundred percent . In addition, during the shoot, we had great fun .

What is your favorite scene ?
I really like the part on the beach,  it was the first scene we shot . During the first shot something interesting is always happening and at that moment you know if what you had in mind will work or not. It was very nice to hear that it would work.

How was working with Rob ?
Rob is extremely curious, he's leaving the phase of the " poster boy " of Twilight to play more mature roles . He's already making interesting and courageous choices. Speaking as a director, I can say that he is an actor who is very easy to work , he's able to give so much .

UPDATE: Added full translation (after the cut)
Robert Pattinson In Faces Magazine (Switzerland) Scans & New Quotes

Thanks to our lovely reader Andrea for scanning this and sending this into us. She tells us that we've heard similar questions/answers in other interviews but she has translated the new quotes for us.
Check them out below the scans.

 photo Faces1.jpg photo Faces2.jpg

New Quotes:

About shooting the scene on the beach:
"The whole bumper fell off; it was wild (laughing)!"

About linking memories with certain smells:
"I remember my dad wearing Brut de Fabergé. He still has it, and it reminds me of my early school days."

About linking cities or countries with certain smells:
"My dad is from Yorkshire. There are moors/swamps and heather everywhere - the smell is incredible. We used to spend Christmas there, and although I haven't been there for years, this smell stayed with me somehow."

About his favorite smell:
"I like the smell of people (laughing)." (Then he talks about discovering perfume when he was 12 years old.)

About his perfect day:
"I can't tell exactly, I like to occupy myself with things. At the moment, I'm working on a story with a friend. I like to talk to people and work on projects with them. And I like to argue with people every now and then (laughing)."

He talks about Death Grips being his favorite band right now.

He talks about his clothing style (we heard about that before in other interviews; nothing new there).

Last question: Twilight made you famous, Cosmopolis changed your Image and Romain Gavras' campagne film for Dior gives your charakter something unexpected. How sweet ist the smell of success?
"Being an actor is weird and the definition of success (...) changes over the years. Of course there is a sweet side to success: I don't have to worry or to work only for money, at least for the next few years. I have a huge respect of all these movies, that's why I try to take the time and energy to make these exciting decisions not everyone makes. (...) But I don't feel I've already been that successful. There's something about Dior that suits me: The brand is staying persistently independent and that's what I want for myself right now."

Thanks so much Andrea!

Robert Pattinson - Stoic Yet Shining Noir-Elegance
by Juliane Görsch

Pattinson, the phenomenon of the 21st century. Only a few actors - including his old flame and colleague Kristen Stewart - have stirred up so much discussion and controversies like Robert Pattinson. Yes, it has never been easy for young stars, after they have used a romantic movie to launch their careers. Just remember the time when so many people predicted Leonardo DiCaprio would have anything but a rosy future after his performance in the horribly underestimated epic romance Titanic. How could a beau like him turn into a successful actor, right? An undeserved nomination for a Golden Raspberry Award and an even more underserved win of this most irrelevant film prize of the world were the direct consequences - yet of course meaningless, like so many decisions in Hollywood.

Pattinson also knows a thing or two about this outrageous nonsense. Meanwhile it is often overlooked that, just like DiCaprio in Gilbert Grape, Robert Pattinson has already shown that he is more than meets the eye. Because why should legendary director David Cronenberg, who helped other actors like Viggo Mortensen to their breakthroughs as character actors, why should he cast Pattinson for Cosmopolis if he didn’t see his potential.

“Really, I’m telling you. He’s a great actor. It’s obvious in the movie. It’s not like maybe yes, maybe no. It’s obvious.” – David Cronenberg

In fact, it was Cosmopolis that has given Pattinson the chance to show off his diverse acting talent for the first time - as if it had always been his vocation to become the competitor of acting legend Alan Delon and the master of impersonators himself, Steve McQueen, by turning into the ice cold angel of the financial world. The way Pattinson walks through those alleyways is incredibly elegant - a rarity among young actors, especially if you compare that to how his Twilight colleagues are selling themselves. Moreover, Pattinson shows in an impressive way that he can not only be an exceptional actor but also be the leading force of a movie. Scenes like the prostate exam simply wouldn’t work with another actor. And I could watch that kind of act for hours, really. Fortunately, many critics who almost without exception praised his performance with words like “Pattinson is both subtle and spectacular”, were of the same opinion.

But even before Cosmopolis Pattinson had already proven his ability to play diverse roles - whether that was in a costume drama (Bel Ami) or typical Hollywood melodrama (Water for Elephants) - and showed that he wouldn’t let himself be outplayed by Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz. What one has to say, however, is that, with the exception of Cosmopolis, films of high quality have barely come his way. But that should change soon because he is currently the go-to-actor of the crime and thriller genre, just as Alan Delon and Humphrey Bogart were. Renowned directors will have to fight hard Pattinson, lest they can be sure their ambivalent characters are brought to life by a suitable and expressive character actor. Pattinson will not only fill the shoes of Peter O’Toole and play the young T.E. Lawrence in Queen of the Desert by Werner Herzog but he has also worked a second time with David Cronenberg in Maps to the Stars; alongside hopeful Mia Wiskowska and established actress Julianne Moore.

And so I’m waiting anxiously for that day that Pattinson, all Bogart-like in a white suit, will outplay everyone just be his mere presence and that he will finally discard his Twilight image - just like today no one is musing about DiCaprios-post-Titanic phase anymore. It won’t be an easy job for Pattinson, to prove all those skeptics out there wrong; all those people who had already formed an opinion about him before having even seen a single one of his Twilight movies. Pattinson is on the right track and despite the media frenzy and the over exaggerated posture of the critics and audience he’ll have a career that will one day make him one of the best in his field. I predict: Robert Pattinson is the man who will be loved by all movie fans in twenty years - no matter what their opinion of him is at this very moment.

Magazine Round-Up: Robert Pattinson In Vogue (Russia), GQ (Russia), InStyle US & Sensa (Belgium)

A little round-up of various magazines (along with translations) that Rob has been in lately while doing Dior Promo

Vogue (Russia) ~ Translation thanks to Christine

 photo 0255.jpg photo 0256.jpg photo 0257.jpg photo 0258.jpg

The actor Robert Pattinson moved to the senior league – he stars in smart films and is the face of Dior homme perfume.

Robert Pattinson is sitting in blue Dior suit, hunching a little. With a three day old beard on his face – his beauty is without a question even here – in the “factory of dreams” – Hollywood, where Dior Homme, the face of which Robert has become and the advertising campaign of which is being presented right now.

Pattinson says that he became an actor thanks to Godard. “Godard’s film “ “breathless”- is a meaningless endless violence with certain buoyancy in it. Then he adds: – that’s how I see life”

He looks like a cool bohemian guy who was already ahead of classmates at school because he smokes a lot, reads foreign literature, could explain the difference between existentialism and absurdism and get all the girls, all of which were dreaming to save him from himself and make him happy. Later he tells me that he loves Nabokov and Bulgakov and that his “Aunt married the leader of British Communist Party and once even met Stalin.”

The main motto of the dior Homme campaign – are the words of the actor James Dean “dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die tomorrow”. In the ad directed by Romain Gavras you see sexy Pattinson emphasizing his similarity with Dean: smoking in a bathtub, a few seconds later he is already driving an old “mercedes” through water or is running on the roofs. He is followed by a young French actress, fateful beauty Camille Rowe. During shooting Pattinson got into his role so much that he crashed the car and almost got injured himself.

We meet in a hotel on Beverly hills the next day. And there is a different Pattinson in front of me. Dressed in jeans, pullover, a backward baseball cap and funny spotty socks. He does not look like fatal seducer I met the night before. I ask him if he really meant what he said about Godard the day before. He laughs a nervous laugh:

“Kind of. I grew up in Barnes – a little district in the south-west of London-with two older sisters. Mom worked at a model agency, father was a car dealer. It was terribly boring there, so we spent all day in the local film rental stores. I learned my most important lesson there: if you watch highly intellectual films with girls, this won’t bring you any good.”

Speaking about his favourite films from that time, he mentions “ One flew over cuckoo’s nest” with Jack Nicholson (“I think I watched it a million times”) and “First Name Carmen” by Godard. The film tells the story of a girl member of a gang who falls in love with a bank guard.

“I think this is one of the most honest love stories I have ever seen” -he explains- “ besides thanks to this film I got to learn about Tom Waits.”

Pattinson is 27. He played his first part at 18 in “Vanity Fair” but his only scene was cut. “ I came to the premiere waiting to see myself and I was not there. Obviously the casting director felt awkward and asked me to audition for “Harry Potter the Goblet of Fire”. Then came “Twilight” thanks to which every girl, and woman on this planet knows Pattinson.

While shooting he met Kristen Stewart. They were together for 4 years-all world knew about it: beloved Edward and Bella will never be separated and both became idols for millions.

“I am sort of happy because I was older than most celebrities starring in teen movies”- says Robert- “ by that time I had had some life experience. For example, I had already lived on my own. I can’t even imagine how Daniel Radcliffe and all those guys manage to keep sane with all this craziness around.”

Pattinson does not make a secret from the fact that he is more interested in Indie movies than in Hollywood blockbusters. Apart from “Twilight” he did serious dramas like “Remember Me”, “Love and Distrust” ,“Water for Elephants” and biography “Little Ashes” for the role of Salvador Dali. He shaved his whole body. The mostly warmly accepted by critics was David Cronenberg film “Cosmopolis” adapted from a novel by Don Delillo. He plays a billionare who cheats on his wife, gets attacked and loses all his fortune. “ My character is so different from me”-says the actor-“ and the movie is quite strange: aggressively unattractive, not trying to please the audience. But a great many people saw it. This is crazy.”

Pattinson is very self-critical when it comes to his job. You should just listen to him speaking about him acting in “Bel Ami” which became his first film after “Twilight” “ I did “Bel Ami” not only because it is one of my favourite things. Most of my fans are girls, so I thought: it will be interesting to play a misogynist. But now I am not sure now that I did it right. The movie should have been a lot gloomier. I think I was too young for this part”.-he explains a little embarrassed. I tell him that he played that character really well but he shakes his head “No, I didn't”. He is sure that only now he started feeling he is more mature and experienced, so it is not surprising that Dior chose him. “At first, I thought that in that ad I look a lot older than I really am. Then, I looked into the mirror and understood-I am no longer 20, people are expecting serious projects from me”.

Would he like to do the theatre? “I don’t think so” –says Pattinson, but at the same time he admires Daniel Radcliffe for daring to come to the stage nude- “that was the best business-decision. So bold! And generally everything he does looks so impressive to me “

I ask him about plans regarding his musical career: Pattinson plays the guitar and piano, several of his songs were in used “twilight”. He won a prize for the most influential non-professional musician of the year in 2010. “Wonderful” – he answers with his trademark mockery/sarcasm when I ask him how his musical career is going-“ I would love to record an album but I don’t know if I really need it.”

Pattinson describes his success to accident. Maybe at first that was the case but now it is obvious that he takes his job seriously. This can be shown by his praise of Radcliffe and his choice of intellectual parts. He happily talks about the freedom Dior gave him “I don’t even feel I am selling something” During the press conference he even declared he does not use perfume himself. When I ask him what smells he likes , he is quiet and looks at me hopelessly and confusedly. I suggest a few : vanilla, cedar, ginger, iris. “Iris?” –he repeats. Fortunately there is a vase of flowers at which I look very expressively. “Oh, I thought they were artificial!” looks like Pattinson is not the one who gives flowers to his girlfriends. Suddenly it strikes him:

“I remembered! My favourite-the smell of burgers. I always order double but I just learned that I can’t eat them because I can’t digest … what’s the name..glutens. And I can’t have beer can you imagine? This is terrible. I feel so weak”

His current interests include every sphere of life. Now he is dating an actress, Elvis Presley ’s granddaughter Riley Keough (you probably remember her from the film “Good Doctor” where she stars opposite Orlando Bloom”) Rob explains his choice: “ I like girls who are not trying to prove anything, who have their own style if they have any”. Then we discuss film festivals “Cannes is the most important one. I am not even trying to sneak into it.”

I tell him that I have an impression that he is more afraid of failures than dreams of success. “yes” –he nods- “pretty accurate” .

A smart, well-read, charming millionaire who is very demanding of himself awkwardly get’s up, his pullover pulls up and I can see his perfect abs. Physical perfection of this young man could not be doubted. But even if I had not seen that, one person joined his masses of fans today-and that is me.

Translation Thanks to @Roboshayka :

Robert Pattinson told us why he agreed to be the new face of ‘Dior homme’.

Q: What does Dior mean to you?
A: Dior is a legend and I like that it’s French. When I’m filming a movie I always hope that it’ll be presented in the Cannes festival because it’s the Top League. The world is Complex than me and I secretly hope that I’ll get a little bit of a Stardust.

Q: The French people Characterized with elegance, do you aspire to get it?
A: To me elegance isn’t about looks, it’s the ability to feel comfortable with yourself and the ability to behave with honor and respect and to listen to others instead of talking about yourself constantly .

Q: What attract you to the fragrance ‘Dior homme’?
A: To me is to rebuild the image classy fragrance. There is something very attractive in doing remakes of movies or fragrances, you have the chance to do something new more wilder than the source. My character in the commercial wore a suit but ran on roofs and going crazy.

Robert Pattinson, the impatient Englishman

Portrait of the man who went through "Twilight ", " Cosmopolis " and Dior ...

New image of the Dior Homme fragrance, the Twilight star refuses to be vampirize by glory. At 27, this idol 'so British' claims his artistic ambition and a fierce appetite for freedom. Encounter with a new wave gentleman .

He is the star of the Twilight saga. He swears only by Jean -Luc Godard. He is an idol who is tracked. He likes nothing better than a party with friends. He is cheerful. And pessimistic. Audaciuous. And anxious. To portray Robert Pattinson, we have to highlight his paradoxes. And to understand why this 27 year old boy, who was perhaps not prepared to deal with a cannibal glory, may give a particular meaning to the word "freedom." Some are more free than others, not him, forced into a seclusion that he wants to shatter.

One year after the end of the Twilight saga, which propelled him into the private circle of overpaid actors in Hollywood, the impatient Englishman wants to exist differently than in the translucent skin of a romantic vampire who electrifies girls. To reinvent himself, this ultrasensitive man based himself on his instinct, his requirement and his culture from old Europe.

The Beverly Hills Hotel, the legendary hotel of Los Angeles where Marilyn Monroe loved Yves Montand, we meet him in an overprotected suite, away from hysteric fans and inquisitive cameras. The air is frenetic. The star is in the stronghold. Robert Pattinson doesn't support a movie this time, but a new role : he is the new ambassador of the fragrance Dior Homme, after Jude Law. A superb prize of war for the French house, since Pattinson is the young man of the moment, intact image and worldwide aura. He embodies a more boyish and rock'n'roll character: it's the very arty Nan Goldin who signed the clichés of the campaign.

Robert Pattinson : "I don't want fear to win."

Robert Pattinson: The Phoenix.

Is there a life after "Twilight"? It's the question that the actor has been trying to answer by lending his talent to arthouse films and his sex appeal to the Dior fragrance. We met up with him.

"The most important is to be cool!" After five years spent in the eye of the storm in Hollywood, Robert Pattinson finally gets it. The revelation didn't come up to him while he was walking his dog in the streets of Los Angeles. It's always felt like there was something awkward about him. And he's always had a hard time hiding (maybe he wasn't really trying) the fact that he didn't really feel like he belonged in the kind of cinema for which he's now an icon. "Acting in a movie that you wouldn't normally go see yourself can complicate things a little," he admits. "It's hard to talk about it, hard to promote it, hard to feel connected to the public... Before I met David Cronenberg who hired me to be in "Cosmospolis", I always felt like I was getting roles that I didn't really get to choose. I was mostly trying not to sink. For the first time ever, I felt like I was chosen for my talent. David gave me that confidence that I didn't possess. It changed everything in the way I viewed my job as an actor."

Fan Has A Tête à Tête With Robert Pattinson Back In 2011

UPDATED: Added 2 more cute pics
We all know that Rob likes to do his part for charity and I'm pretty sure there's a lot he does that we don't hear about.
This story from 2011 surfaced today.

Rob spent some time when in France for BD1 promo meeting with Julie through a charity called Rèves ("Dreams"): The association that makes sick kids dreams come true.

Here's the lowdown of what happened, along with 3 gorgeous pics!!

Translation (via Google Translate with a few tweeks from me ;-})

He is the star of the Twilight saga and the idol of all the girls. Through the association, Julie was able to meet Robert Pattinson in person! This young 15 year old girl had the opportunity to spend a few minutes in the company of the star, on October 24, just before his appearance on 20h TF1. Also moved the girl, Robert easily played the game questions / answers.

The previous day, Julie was able to attend exclusively a Twilight Fan Event for Breaking Dawn Part 1 in a famous Parisian cinema. A special moment reserved for a few fans in which Robert Pattinson and Ashley Greene answered questions from the public. It was followed by a projection of some scenes from the movie.

Charmed and in love, Julie returned delighted with stars in her eyes & with the intention of becoming an actress one day!
