Sir Ian McKellen: Robert Pattinson is a Huge Star

Sir Ian McKellen one of the greatest actors of our time gave an interview to the York Shire Post, it's a great read if you are a fan. He also talks about why he loves theater and the dangers of being too famous to fast:

For him, retirement holds no appeal.

He says: "I think I've never got over the fact that I'm allowed to act at all.

"If the phone rings and there's a job offer, it's a wonderful act of faith that someone's had in you. People only retire because they're bored with their job and can't wait to give it up. The only thing I dread about the job and the future is not having the energy to do it."

In an age where people with little or no training can climb on a stage with the goal of "becoming famous" courtesy of shows like The X-Factor, Sir Ian remains a vocal advocate of stage craft.

"If I'd made the equivalent of Lord of the Rings when I was 24 then I don't know what I would have done. Robert Pattinson, the young man who's in Twilight, he's a huge star, but now it must be a worry for him about what he's going to do next," says Sir Ian.

"You can't keep at that level. For me, at 24, the question of what was next was very easy – I was going to do my next theatre role and I was going to get better.

"I didn't have to look for the next big success and nor do I still, because I have still got the theatre. It puzzles people in the film industry, they say, 'What's he doing Coronation Street for?' It's obvious isn't it?

"I would go and work in the regions when other people were hanging around waiting for a film part. I went off and played parts probably for less money than I should have had, but I suppose it's paid off."

Sir Ian McKellen is such a fantastic actor and a great man... Gandalf in Lord of the Rings, my favourite character...
He has always been around and always stands up for his choices and way of life... and he is scottish too ;o)
I don't think he mentioned Rob for publicity, he doesn't need that and he is so right!!! Nice interview...

I love Sir Ian..he's so full of grace...that's awesome that he mentions Rob and I can understand his concerns, although I think Rob is gonna be just fine.

He's got a great head on his shoulders, good solid family & friends.

RPG, all of that...and he has chosen good follow up movies. He has a very good (and beautiful) head on his shoulders.

Yes, I meant shoulders. hehe

that's so cool of him to mention Rob! Sir Ian is a very respected actor, and I think even if for now Rob is mostly known as the guy from Twilight, there will be a day when he will be respected at that level. He's picked some very challenging and WAY different roles for follow-ups...I totally agree, he's going to be just fine!

and won't we have fun watching him be just FINE! heehee

Well, of course Sir Ian..um…noticed Rob. Lol I agree with him wholeheartedly on the danger. Although its great so many appreciate Rob, that spotlight won’t allow him the kind of obscurity he needs to try his hand and fail. Experience of the ‘growing kind,’ where you can experiment and take chances without feeling the weight of all that money, is really only available in an arena like theatre these days. Rob does seem very aware of the pitfalls. I hope he can tread the line between popular success and development of craft.

Of course, Rob can always follow Sir I’s advice on acting in “Extras.” Fingers walking: “Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian…” stop. “Wizard: Thou shalt not pass!” Fingers dip and keep walking: “Sir Ian, Sir Ian.” Luv him for taking the piss in that whole episode…

I think, that Rob feels a great preasure to be a better actor in every next movie he made. He does't want to be just a celebrity but an artist. And he is on a good way if stars like Sir Ian McKellen, notice him, and concerns about his future career. He should be proud of himself, like we all are.

Insightful of Sir Ian to observe, and wonderful of Sir Ian to mention, Rob like this. Last year, I was worried about Rob and how he would deal with the very-not-normal pace of/rise to recognition, fame, and demands. I had hoped he would get some kind of guidance and/or mentoring from established actors at the least in dealing with fame, papz, etc. But after a year of reading and listening to his own words in articles and interviews, mostly thanks to this site, I think Rob really has done a terrific job, has an excellent head on his shoulders, has expressed observations and even resistance re the industry and his goals, and will go forward thoughtfully and intelligently. Although I still worry about his safety and health, I am confident in his intelligence, his choices, his path. I am so impressed.

Good advice. He needs to go work on his craft via theater, that would be really awesome. I believe the guy behind Equus that had Harry Potter nakey onstage has mentioned him doing something with Robert theater wise at some point....

Now he is an actor's actor! What an honor to be mentioned by him. I agree Rosa, I would LOVE to see Rob do theater! After all, that's where he started, so he should be fairly comfortable there & I agree it's the best place to hone your craft.
