"Water For Elephants" Author Sara Gruen Talks About Robert Pattinson & The Film

Were you poking yourself when “Water for Elephants” was contracted to become a movie, and when some little actors by the names of Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon agreed to be in it?

I have to stop and pause and knock on wood right now. The closer it comes to being real, the more superstitious I get. It’s Hollywood. It can all go poof, still. Things are looking as good as they can.

Are you involved with the project at all?

They’re letting us have the whole family in it as a cameo. I think we’re all going to be on in the midway or something. My kids are really excited about that, and I am, too, (Kate: Bet you are, I would too if I was getting to meet Robert Pattinson!) because that sounds like so much fun. I asked (the producers), and they said sure. So we’ll be in the background in a restaurant or on the midway and be a fast thing (on screen), but we’ll know where it is and the kids will be excited.

What do the three kids think now about mom’s career? Did the cinema thing raise your stature in their eyes?

No. I think the Robert Pattinson thing raised the stature of my oldest child in the school because all the girls are crazy about him. (Kate: Not just the girls Sara the women too!) My 9-year-old asks me every time I get back from a book signing if I wrote a new book. He thinks I write a book a day. He has no concept of what I do.

but honestly this gal is lucky she can use her writing pros to get into a lil scene. n better yet is the fact that she is doing it for her kids and family.

because i mean who could have an ulterior motives on this?

I loved this book and think Rob will be amazing as (hard for me to type this) Jacob. I read it after I heard Rob might be in in, so I was able to see him in the role.

Love the bit about her son thinking she wrote a new book every time she went to a book signing.

@ Noe--OMG, what a talented gal is this Sarah Barry Williams! Such a cute song. Noticed she has a few others about him too!
I also read this book after I heard Rob was going to play Jacob. I can picture Rob as this conflicted but sweet young man. This movie should be a home run!!!

Fun for her and her family and glad she's excited about the prospect of the film, and not worried. I can't wait for this one. Huge challenge for Rob...

Re: music video "I Want To be Mrs. Robert Pattinson"-now I can't get that melody out of my mind. My husband just wouldn't understand if he heard me signing this one! Thanks Noe! :)

Add me to the list too! I had seen the book "Water For Elephants" but I always put off checking it out, because it just didn't seem like something that would interest me. Then when it was said that Robert would play Jacob, I just had to read the story to find out if it's to my taste or not! And I really enjoyed the book, I think it's unneccessarily long with descriptions of circus life that could have easily been cut down, but the story and the romance between Jacob/Marlena were so good!

And the author seems like a sweet lady, I think it will be cute that she and her family will have a candid scene in it.

Robert will make one SEXY Jacob Jawkowsky, with his talent and hotness! I just hope they don't cut his hair in a buzz cut (I can't even bear to think of it! lol), I love long-ish hair on men, whether messy like Robward's or straightened like Rob-Ami.

So I have a few questions for those of you who have read the script, since I haven't and I read some comments by some people who said they had read the script, I would like to know is the script better than the book? Are the unimportant things cut down in the script (because as we know in a movie they always have to condense things from the book, because the book is too long) to give the time needed for our wonderful Jacob/Marlena romance? And does it have a happy ending, or is the ending happy but bitter/sweet like the book? I want to know!

I'm really looking forward to this movie!

Angel Wings - I've read the book and script and found them both good... I think I actually preferred the script.

The script captures the essence of the book nicely. Should be a fantastic movie.

I love Rob and am excited to see him as Jacob J.(but think Rosie might steal the movie) :)

Oh Susan tell me, is it focused on the romance, as it should be? Please tell me! I'm really excited for this movie!

Oh and I don't mind the last scene to be of Jacob with an elephant, so that can trigger his memories of Marlena when he met her in the circus, and we could get a flashback scene of a young J/M laughing together in each other's arms. It would be so romantic and bitter/sweet, as we see the old Jacob remembering and waiting!

I know, I'm such a hopeless romantic lol.

@kathy s
that's great to hear. and i have to agree with you about rob. he will do the character justice from the description given.

I actually read this book before I found out they were making a movie out of it and that they picked Rob to do it. I absolutely loved the book and I cannot wait to see Rob as Jacob!

@ Noe I just looked it up on amazon and it says 350 pgs. If you live in the US then you can buy this book for really cheap used on amazon

I LOVE this book and can't wait to see it come to life on the big screen. I think Rob is perfect for the role. For those who can't find the book in their country (cindygal) have you tried Barnes and Noble or Amazon?

I got mine from the library and loved it so much, I had to own it...so I bought mine at Borders.

Noe said...

@netra

thanks. i can do that. anything more than 450 and i automatically refuse. unless it's required. haha.

So...just where might one get their hands on this script?

My only disappointment is that apparently, Rob will not be playing old Jacob. I think that's a shame 'cause if he were and he nailed it, it would send this performance and his career to a whole other level and in all liklihood, put him on the short list for an Oscar nomination.

Script please?

Oh and AP?
Where did you hear that the Britpack was on the move? Any 'particular' member of that pact? I've been wondering if he's landed in this neck of the woods yet (and yes, I consider anywhere in my time zone -which would include Vancouver- to be in my neck of the woods) or if he's still home. I mean, the air space is clear now.

C'mon kid. You got reshoots to do and WFE supposedly starts in less than four weeks. Don't you got some critters to come play with?

Chop. Chop.

Script please?

nikola6 said...

It's funny but normally I like it when he goes underground and disappears for awhile. Well. I don't like it for me so much. I like it for him ALOT. But even I'm getting antsy wondering...

WHERE THE HELL ARE YA KID?

(but only because he's got filming to get to)

@Nik: I was referring to Tom and Bobby Long officially starts his tour in the US tomorrow - although he's been there for a bit. Rob's still in Lundun as far as I know - but, as you say, must be on his way soon, if only to relieve your fidgets...lol

There is a draft of WFE dated April,2009 floating about the net, I believe, but I don't know the link. I've seen a version of the production draft but don't have to pass on - sorry.
