The Haunted Airman Soundtrack Release

1812 Recordings are excited to finally announce the release of Daniel Pemberton’s atmospheric soundtrack to the acclaimed BBC film The Haunted Airman. Starring Twilight’s Robert Pattinson and adapted from the cult Dennis Wheatly novel The Haunting Of Toby Jugg this psychological thriller tells the story of an injured WWII RAF pilot (Pattinson), who, whilst trapped in a sinister hospital, grows ever more sexually obsessed with his aunt (played by Rachael Stirling – Tipping The Velvet). The film was made by the BAFTA and EMMY award winning director Chris Durlacher (George Orwell – A Life In Pictures) and also co-stars Julian Sands (24, Ocean’s 13).

Daniel Pemberton’s score touches on the many different dark themes of the story – from the extreme atonal horror of ‘Spiders’ and ‘Final Confrontation’ to the unrequited romance of ‘Hidden Love’; from the melancholic ‘Loss Of Control’ to the eerie sound of ‘Theme’ and ‘Ending’ – and will quickly take listeners back to the sinister and confused world of the film’s protagonist, Toby Jugg, played by Pattinson. Recorded in London the fifteen track mini-album features a dark and unusual mix of treated pianos, child vocals, detuned violas, orchestral flourishes and custom sound design.

Robert Pattinson "The Haunted Airman" DVD Review *Updated*

Gozde's update note: Lex Walker, the unfortunate "movie critic" that wrote the below review went back and edited some parts of it after the comments posted on his so called review pointed out that Rob made The Haunted Airman years before Twilight. It would have been nice, if, instead of going back and editing the piece, he would have written a correction but I guess it's too much to expect. Critics should be able to critic themselves when they make a mistake, unfortunately they are usually too full of themselves to do so... The additions he made to the review afterwards are in red. He also deleted one part, that's in bold.

Shame on you Mr. Walker...

From Just pressplay.com
Robert Pattinson finds himself facing the same mountain that Daniel Radcliffe has begun to successfully scale: living down the pop-culture mantle cast upon him. Unlike Radcliffe however, Pattinson has wisely chosen to start the process with all due haste so as not to be forever known as “that Twilight vampire guy”. (the following part in red was absent in the original review)However, before Twilight was even a twinkle on his horizon, he made The Haunted Airman, a made-for-television movie first aired in the UK in 2006 and canned until this 2009 release when the American audience will get another taste of pre-Twilight Pattinson. Unfortunately, there's a strong parallel between the two roles. It may help show that he can do more than brood and talk wistfully about a romance he can't let himself have (although there is an element of that here as well) but there's still one distracting drawback: he still looks like a vampire. The Haunted Airman follows the right path to help Pattinson to that effect save for one thing: he still looks like a vampire. So much so that it outshines an unfortunately dim narrative which never fully establishes itself because of its stunted 70 minute run-time. You can see the plans for a good feature-length story, but the whole thing just peters out instead of climbing to the fully deserved dramatic climax. What a shame.(the following part in red was absent in the original review)Consequently it does little to help convince non-Pattinson fans of his range (which does exist).

Grounded flight lieutenant Toby Jugg (Pattinson) has taken psychological refuge in the care of Dr. Hal Burns (Julian Sands) who proposes a unique style of treatment (for all his patients) to get people back on their feet. As Burns treats Jugg and forces him to confront facets of his fears, he also denies his patient communication which begins to make Jugg doubt the good doctor’s intentions. The object of Toby’s written affections, Julia (Rachael Stirling), seems to mirror his sentiments but her compliance with Burns’ doctrine causes the patient a growing sense of unease. Eventually Toby begins to doubt his senses and eventually begins to wonder if the things he sees are real or hallucinations of his mania.

The familiar thriller skeleton was reanimated in the time of a world war to give the well-worn material a new spin – but it still feels all too old. The parts of The Haunted Airman that seem worthwhile in their own right never receive the development they deserve. Instead, it spends all its time rehashing the very generic story and consequently becomes just another lazy psychological playground. There was ample opportunity to tie Toby’s delusions into the unique time period setting and explore it fully from that angle, but it just never happens. Writers Chris Durlacher and Dennis Wheatley taunt us with the story they could have told and then just yank it away with no remorse.

As was said before, what really makes the film significant is the performances within and whether or not they help Pattinson distract from his pop-culture rampant appearance in the Twilight series (the following part in red was absent in the original review)- even retroactively. For most, this will be the second film they see Pattinson star in, making Twilight their frame of reference for the actor's abilities. Pattinson’s Toby Jugg easily has more depth than the brooding and terse vampire Edward, but thanks to the makeup effects and the black and white sequences in the film we’re reminded all too readily of the bloodless cheeks he sports in the other franchise. At least Radcliffe didn’t go on to play a young magician or facially scarred youth in his first non-Potter features, he at least had some sense of the distance he needed to place between his fame and his long-term career. (the following part in red was absent in the original review). The film's rerelease almost four years later for mass consumption does little to bolster his credibility. His performance may be stronger but it screams an unfortunate theme of dull characters. Even Little Ashes, in which he portrayed Salvador Dali, offered little variation in his distant and aloof style which has pervaded both Toby and Edward.Pattinson seems ignorant to this.(Gozde: He deleted the Pattinson seems ignorant part since the only person that's ignorant is Lex Walker here.)

Then we have Julian Sands, an actor it’s nigh impossible to say anything good about without adopting the same tongue in cheek attitude you think he’s using for all of his parts – even though he’s not. That’s just how he acts. His smarmy overacting affects every scene and after awhile you either learn to laugh along with his performance or it just bugs you. The former is recommended for The Haunted Airman, or the 70 minutes will feel like forever.

Visually the film has a very interesting aesthetic. On one hand the black and white treatment wanders too close to the Twilight feel that Pattinson needed to evade, but outside of that influence the film has definite appeal. The direction of Chris Durlacher (known for a string of made-for-television movies just like this one) lacks any real subtlety and as a result the hokey spider and spider-web visuals feel childish instead of creepy.

DVD Bonus Features:

You would like to think that they’d try to supplement a too-short film with some sort of padding (an interview or even a production piece) but it seems that’s just not the case

Blast from the Past: Robert Pattinson in the Haunted Airman

A real Blast from the Past with this post! I remember seeing the Haunted Airman on TV and thinking "Wow! That guy is good looking!" I didn't know then the good looking guy was Robert Pattinson and that years later we'd all be admiring 'that jaw'!!

Were these the images that first caught you attention too?

The Haunted Airman was a BBC movie where Rob played a British airman:
"Robert Pattinson was in a  wheelchair for the Haunted Airman, a made for TV movie, based on Dennis Wheatley’s ‘40s occult thriller, The Haunting Of Toby Jugg.At the time, it was a fresh, riveting idea. A disabled British airman recovers from his time in battle. Pattinson’s version was funded by the BBC and aired on BBC4 in October 2006. His performance won fans in The Stage mag, who credited his performance, which incorporated “youthful terror and world weary cynicism”."

"Twilight" Isn't Robert Pattinsons only Starring Role

From:Madison.com
There's a downside to being an actor who has become an "overnight sensation." It actually didn't happen overnight.

While everyone thinks he suddenly popped up on the scene because of that big hit movie, in reality the actor has probably been toiling quietly away at thankless, underseen, sometimes just plain embarrassing roles waiting for that big break. And, once that big break happens, the folks who own those little-seen before-you-were-famous films are only too happy to cash in.

That's what's happening with Robert Pattinson, best known as vampire heartthrob Edward from the smash hit "Twilight" and the upcoming sequel, "New Moon." "New Moon" doesn't come out until Nov. 20, so DVD companies know Pattinson's fans are getting anxious to see him in action. And they're only too happy to oblige.

Blast from the Past: Haunted Airman Review

Harry Venning at TheStage.co.uk reviewed The Haunted Airman in 2006 when it first aired and thanks to our lovely Phosphorus we got our hands on it :) Here it is:

All of the BBC’s blue filters must have been requisitioned for The Haunted Airman, a very disturbing, beautifully made and satisfyingly chilling ghost story.

Set in a convalescence home for shell-shocked servicemen during World War Two, it starred Robert Pattinson as a wheelchair-bound RAF pilot suffering from trauma, guilt and paranoia. Either that, or he’s actually imprisoned in a private hell run by the devil himself, who sends spiders, birds and the spirits of the dead to torment him. Make up your own mind.

Pattinson - an actor whose jawline is so finely chiselled it could split granite - played the airman of the title with a perfect combination of youthful terror and world weary cynicism. Julian Sands provided creepy support as the oleaginous Dr Barnes, with Rachael Stirling as the airman’s solicitous and attentive ‘aunt’.

Gozde: Mr. Venning had no idea that the "chiselled jaw line" would be famous one day and the photos of the said jaw would be lovingly called "Jaw Porn" :))

September was all about DiorRob!

So epic! Not only did DiorRob have his own day, twice, but he influenced our fave edits of the day, Robporn of the day, black & white picture, PensiveRob and more! We've got DiorRob on our minds 24/7 since the Dior Homme ad debuted Sept. 1st.

The 365DoR month was actually themed for one of Rob's best films, Remember Me. We've covered Bel Ami: FebruaryWater for Elephants: AprilCosmopolis: MayTwilight Part 1: JuneLittle Ashes: July, and The Bad Mother's Handbook and Harry Potter: August. It was only right to celebrate Remember Me in the month of September. The filming for RM had so many pictures, we had to give it two days for pics and gifs from filming. Each of the PremiereRobs also got a day in NYC and London. From stills, to shots with Emilie de Ravin, to our fave Tyler pic, we truly had a great month for the special film.

Fear.Net has a special list for Halloween. They listed the Top 10 horror movies the Twilight Saga stars appeared in and of course Rob got a mention. Don't watch the video if you are afraid of spiders :)

BONUS: Robert Pattinson in The Haunted Airman
We couldn't leave off without mentioning RPattz's one and only foray into the realm of spooks and spiders and creepy crawlies, could we? In this 2006 BBC film, Pattinson plays a wheelchair-bound WWII pilot who descends into madness while recuperating after the war. Released for the first time in the U.S. this month, The Haunted Airman is a must-see for you hardcore Pattinson fans, and one of the most demanding and sophisticated performances we think he's given.

Thanks to twmmy for the tip :)

Check out the whole list at Fear.Net and if you like scary movies I would highly recommend Hide and Seek (Dakota Fanning) and The Messengers (Kristen Stewart). Dakota scared the crap out of me at the end of the movie :))

„Twilight“ star and super hottie Robert Pattinson tells us, what kind of women fascinate him and why they can be afraid of him.

Text on the left:

Doesn't like to brush his hair: Robert Pattinson, the coolest guy since there are actors playing vampires.

Text on the right:

About a year ago, no one knew Robert Pattinson. The Brits kept there hottest .... since Jude Law – except a small part in Harry Potter – well hidden. But since his success as vampire Edward in Twilight he became one of the most desired men on the planet. And that could even increase with the start of the second part of the Twilight Saga (New Moon, release date November 26th) Robert Pattinson comes to the interview in black jeans and a black button-down – just like you imagine a vampire. A bit of chest hair can be seen in the neckline. Every now and then our talk is interrupted by screaming fans that are waiting in front of the „Beach Club“ in Cannes. The 23 year old tries to stay as relaxed as possible in this tense atmosphere and grins apologetically, as if to say: Really not my fault. But it is. Because even as a man you have to ungrudgingly admit: Robert Pattinson just looks illegally good.

Interview:

The important stuff at the beginning: Millions of girls are wondering if you are in a relationship with your co-star Kristen Stewart?

Honestly? I can understand that my fans are interested to know but I just want to say this: She's a wonderful co-worker. I haven't read anything that's been written about us in a long time.

Are girls afraid of you?

Are afraid of me? I hope so! When you don't have something dangerous, animalistic as a man you aren't a real man, are you? (laughs)

What kind of women do you like?

I like women that are a bit dark and that don't have superficial self-confidents.

Leonardo DiCaprio told me once that with Robert Pattinson there was finally a young man in the film business he could give his title „eternal romantic hero“to. Do you accept?

He said that? Wow. It sounds stupid but do you know what? It is kind of cool. The guy has a great career and made the best out of his early success. In this respect I gladly step into his foot steps.

You are not only a talented actor but also a gifted singer. Your song “Never Think” is on the “Twilight” soundtrack. When will the album be releases?

I’ve been making music for some time. The director heard one of my songs and wanted it for the soundtrack. The whole music thing is a bit embarrassing for me. I once had a band, but now that I’m this popular it sounds weird: Robert Pattinson, the singing actor.

Fans are supposedly camping out in front of your apartment in Los Angeles. Can you keep up counting?

(laughts) They didn’t really camp there. And at the moment I’m not even there too often. But in the beginning they actually waited round the clock there. And they left messages on my car daily.

What were the messages like?

It started with: “Please don’t think I’m crazy but call me.” It built-up to “If you don’t pay attention to me, I kill myself. But I’m not crazy…”

Well, wherever you are girls are screaming. And you still seem to wonder about that?

I’m still wondering in fact. It’s completely crazy. I’m still surprised very time I see a real screaming fan.

Kristen Stewart said you change your clothes rarely. How long have you been wearing today’s outfit already?

I think from the belt upwards everything is new. Sometimes I really wear my clothes until I can’t stand the smell anymore.

Why don’t you change your clothes more often then?

I only have a few things I really like. And I’m always en route, away from washing machines. Why am I even telling you that? Ah, something else, I rarely brush my hair. My dad always wanted to brush my hair when I was little. I hated it. Now I sound like a complete freak. (laughs)

You’re driving an ancient car. You’re apartment has been paid by the production company. Still everyone claims you’re always broke.

I don’t know why. It’s a mystery to me. I’m probably losing my money on the streets…

On the Twilight set Rob found his big love in Kristen. Both have a huge crush

2004: He’s still embarrassed about his role in „rings of the Nibelungs“

2006: as handicapped soldier Toby in „The Haunted Airman”

2007: his last movie before „Twilight“. Rob as gay painter Salvador Dali in “Little Ashes”

Headline: Robert Pattinson – Twilight saved me From Loser to super boy! From Freak to the coolest vampire in the movie history. How Twilight Star Robert Pattinson overcame his life crisis…

Article
How happy they both look! Robert Pattinson (23) and Kristen Stewart (19) hand-holding at the airport in Paris. He’s beaming. She’s smiling. So cute! Life can be so beautiful. At the moment both are on a big promo tour for their new movie “New Moon” and travel through the whole world. BRAVO met the stars exclusive in Los Angeles and Munich. And both times show how much they enjoy their time together. Rob especially has every reason to be happy. Not only did he find his big love, fame, money and millions of fans worldwide due to his role in the vampire saga. The part as vampire Edward saved him from his serious life crisis. “Before Twilight I went crazy for some time” the 23-year-old confesses. Understandable – if you consider everything that went wrong.

Main problem: He didn’t get any big roles! After loser parts in TV movies like “Rings of the Nibelungs” (2004), Rob hoped to establish himself as wizard Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” (2005). No such luck! Again only small roles in Low-Budget-Movies like “The Haunted Airman” or “Little Ashes” followed. “I always played freaks” Rob said. It got even worse for the Brit: “I even got thrown out of stage plays I had a solid part in” he remembers. Very depressing for someone who dropped out of school for his acting career.

The consequence: Rob started doubting himself and his talent, turned towards music and went through small London bars with his guitar. “It was seedy,” he admits “Nobody was interested when I went on stage.” At the end of 2007 he heard about the audition for the novel based movie “Twilight” by accident. “I never heard of it before,” he openly admits. But still he recorded a audition tape with his housemate. “I looked awful and never even sent the tape.” Robs luck: “Twilight”-director Catherine Hardwicke (54) knew the 1,85m actor from “Harry Potter” and invited him to Los Angeles for the audition. “I took it really serious,” Rob says about the minutes that should change his life. “I hit my head against the wall and kept telling myself how important it is. I went completely mad.” In this crazy condition he didn’t even realize how thrilled everyone present- including Kristen – was with his performance. “I didn’t think I’d get the role,” he explains. “Soon after I called my parents and told them “That’s it! I quit!””. When Rob got the role as vampire Edward, he couldn’t believe his luck. “That’s when it clicked. There’s just one thing I wanted: Making everything right!” And he made it. Now the former loser is the coolest guy in the world. And he couldn’t be happier….

The Evolution of Robert Pattinson

After this - just thinking about what we have to look forward to makes me a little weak in the knees....

Vanity Fair (2004)

Photobucket

Your big break, and your scenes are left scorching the editing room floor. That’s Hollywood for you!
Mr Pattinson’s first major role saw him appearing in the updated, Reese Witherspoon-headed Vanity Fair as Rawdy Crawley.
His big moment comes in the graveyard scene, where he pouts and looks generally moody and miffed, frilled up something chronic. You can find it in the DVD’s deleted scenes.
The Do: The famous quiff puts in an early appearance, though the do’s shorter than usual.

Ring Of The Nibelungs (2004)

Photobucket

TV flick that used Norse mythology as a springboard for a lot of chatter about Dragon-Slaying and the like. Pattinson’s fee funded his tuition at the Harrodian School in barnes.
R-Patz is Giselher, the king’s brother, who stows away on a voyage to Iceland. He wears a lot of Medieval-type clothing, and a lot of leather. There is actually smiling involved, which is a shock for anybody who’s not seen anything of Pattinson pre-Twilight.
The Do: It’s mullet time! Long, blonder than ever, and very pretty indeed. Nasty fringe, though.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (2005)

Photobucket

Nabbing a role in The Little Franchise That Could, Pattinson plays Cedric Diggory (or should that be Deadric?), the famously tragic figure who falls at the hand of You-Know-Who.
His performance landed him the British Star of Tomorrow award from The Times, and by all accounts Patz had a good time filming how to scuba dive for the part. Oh, and he lied in his audition, saying that he loved football so he’d get the role. Bad boy.
The Do: Posh, side-swept boys’ school look befitting of somebody called Cedric. It’s about as dangerous as a kitten in a bow.

The Haunted Airman (2006)

Photobucket

R-Patz finds his way around a wheelchair for another TV movie, based on Dennis Wheatley’s ‘40s occult thriller, The Haunting Of Toby Jugg.
At the time, it was a fresh, riveting idea. A disabled British airman recovers from his time in battle. Pattinson’s version was funded by the BBC and aired on BBC4 in October 2006. His performance won fans in The Stage mag, who credited his performance, which incorporated “youthful terror and world weary cynicism”.
The Do: The Cedric do’s still there. Eee, isn’t he posh?

The Bad Mother’s Handbook (2007)

Photobucket

Another TV film, this one alongside Catherine Tate for ITV. It’s an adaptation of the bestseller of the same name by Kate Long. He plays the boyfriend of Holly Grainger’s Charlie, whose only gone and got herself pregnant.
Stateside, ABC are planning their own TV series based on the book, with the decidedly more glamorous Alicia Silverstone to star. We doubt Patz will be involved.
The Do: Oh dear God, make it stop! Painfully floppy curtains render R-Patz nothing more than a big, walking night-hair. Needs a serious trim.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (2007)

Photobucket

Wait just one cotton picking minute, didn’t Patz die in the last HP outing? Ah, sorry Patties, there’s no resurrection for his manly Deadric. He just appears in a photograph.
It’s little more than a cameo, but a sweet one at that.
“Sometimes I think, ‘To hell with acting,’” the actor says. “And then I realize I could be working at a shoe shop. Acting is much cooler.”
The Do: A repeat of the young, gentlemanly cut he favoured in Goblet Of Fire.

The Summer House (2008)

Photobucket

A short film from the London Academy, Summer House might as well have been the role that convinced the Twilight producers that he was right for Edward Cullen.
After all, he plays a dark, persuasive stalker-type who falls head-over-heels in love with a dark-haired young lady and tries everything to woo her. He’s got a bit of a Hollywood tan here; lovely.
The Do: Still long, sort of a cross between the remains of a dead rat and an aging rocker.

How to Be (2008)

Photobucket

Patz shows off his skill with a guitar playing the odd-named Art (we’re guessing that’s short for Artemidoros or Arthgallo), a sort of transient low-life who means well, but seems to end up annoying everybody despite himself.
It was first released at the IFC Festival in April 2009 after having been on a screening tour. Patz won a Best Actor award at the Strasbourg Film Festival.
The Do: Dreadful! Curtains are worse than their debut in Bad Mother’s Handbook, and the eyebrows are out of control.

Little Ashes (2008)

Photobucket

Pattinson stretches those acting chops and makes out with a boy. In your face, Bella.
He plays infamous boundary-busting artist Salvador DalĂ in the 1922-set tale, who allegedly had a gay affair with poet Federico GarcĂa Lorca while studying at university in Madrid. There’s a bit where he puts his thing between his legs like Buffalo Bill in The Silence Of The Lambs.
It has been nominated for a prize at the 21st GLAAD Media Awards.
The Do: It’s all about that crazy moustache and the greasy, slicked back hair.

Twilight (2008)

Photobucket

Hard to believe that there was a Twi-hard outcry when news of Pattinson’s casting was first announced. He beat 3,000 brooding hopefuls to the role.
Pattinson says the film “is a metaphor for the virtues of chastity, but it’s had the opposite effect. I get letters that say, ‘I’m going to kill myself if you don’t watch High School Musical 2 with me.’ It’s a little nuts.” Poor Patz.
The Do: That’s more like it. Patz finds his trademark do and makes teenage boys go running to the ‘dressers while forgetting how they took the piss out of the girls for doing the same with The Rachel.

New Moon (2009)

Photobucket

A diminished role for the first Twilight sequel, as Edward dumps his beloved Bella and she goes off with some wolf fella who hates wearing shirts.
It’s Patz’s favourite book in the series. He reportedly refused to have his unruly eyebrows waxed as much as in the first film.
Rumours persist that he and co-star Kristen Stewart are having a secret affair. Nobody’s talking – they don’t even talk to each other in public much.
The Do: A slightly longer, slightly darker variant on the original (to make him a bit grumpier, maybe).

Remember Me (2010)

Photobucket

This is the flick that Patz was filming when he was hit by a car attempting to escape screaming fans. During a break in shooting, he attempted to get away from over-zealous nutjobs and got clipped by a car. Luckily he was fine.
Hollywoodland director Allen Coulter helms this indie romance, in which moody 21-year-old Tyler (Patz) falls in love with Ally (Emilie de Ravin), who lives each day as if it were her last after witnessing her mother’s murder. Cheery stuff.
The Do: He’s found his style now, rocking the short look and making us all look damned unfashionable.

The Haunted Airman Trailer

Adapted from Dennis Wheatley's novel The Haunting of Toby Jugg, this is the chilling tale of a troubled young man who returns from the war only to face new terrors.

Flight Lieutenant Jugg (Pattinson), confined to a wheelchair after being wounded in action, arrives at a remote mansion in Wales to recuperate. Suffering terrible nightmares and visions, he suspects the methods of his psychiatrist, Dr Hal Burns. His beautiful aunt, Julia, seems to be the only person he can trust - until circumstances make him doubt even her intentions.

The drama was written, produced and directed by Chris Durlacher, whose previous credits include Kenneth Tynan: In Praise of Hardcore and George Orwell: A Life in Pictures.

The Haunted Airman stars Julian Sands (Warlock, A Room With A View), Rachael Stirling, Robert Pattinson (Twilight, Harry Potter) and is out on DVD on April 6th through Revolver Entertainment.

The only Robert Pattinson project most people know from his pre-"Twilight" days is his small role in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" as Cedric Diggory, but as his popularity has grown, more of his earlier projects are getting wide release. The latest of those is the short film "The Summer House," which was filmed for a week back in the summer of 2006, but is only hitting film festivals and iTunes this year. You can watch the trailer here.

First-time director Daisy Gili said she actually cast Rob because she was recommended him by Campbell Mitchell, who had worked on props for another of his early projects, "The Haunted Airman."

"He said, this guy is amazing, and he's really nice, and I think he'd be really up for working on a short film," Gili told MTV News. "I saw a picture of him and I thought, he's fantastic." (Kate: She has good taste!)

Chicago Breaking News has a piece about the craziness that's surrounding Robert Pattinson. You can watch it HERE

"Bite me."

It's a request British actor Robert Pattinson gets almost daily as star of the new vampire film "Twilight" (opening Nov. 21).

"It's crazy," said Pattinson, 22, waiting inside Orland Square's Hot Topic store. He has to laugh, pretend he hasn't heard it before.

"Even if you say, 'No,' they just wait," he says. "They just stand there."

Tonight, more than 500 fans waited outside -- some since the night before -- to ask him the same question or something in that vein. One fan, Orland Park's Abby Johnson, wore a self-made T-shirt that read: "Edward Cullen Make Me Immortal" (Edward is Pattinson's fanged alter ego.)

As the clock reached 6 p.m., the time he'd start signing autographs, the crowd started screaming, counting down, "Three; two; one;" Chaos.

"Oh my God," said Pattinson, laughing nervously at the uproar. "Are they going to blow [the place] up?"

Mostly, they just filed in peacefully, gushing and smiling -- though for the public Q&A session later, the crowd seemed to have swelled to a frenzied mass.

In what follows, Pattinson talks about his new movie, immortality and Doctor Who.

Q - What does Edward, a 108-year-old vampire, see in a 17-year-old girl?

A - He's lived for 108 years, but he still has the same brain as a 17-year-old. He experiences the world as a 17-year-old. He's kind of mature in some ways. But if you were in the body of a 17-year-old, I don't think you'd go for a 108-year-old woman.

Q - But why high school? For you personally, wouldn't 80 years of high school be hell?

A - Definitely. I would hate it. That was one of the most difficult things to figure out. You think he'd stay in college, or be a street kid. It'd be way cooler. But I think the whole concept of it is: He's like an addict. I think he wants to make his life really, really, really boring.

Q - This question is from Jennifer Armour, a fan waiting in line. David Tennant, the current star of "Doctor Who," is quitting in 2010. Would you consider taking up the mantle?

A - The Doctor is great. ... Yeah, maybe. I did grow up watching it. I loved it when I was a kid. In fact, I met one of them the other day, Sylvester McCoy [the seventh Doctor]. He's one of the few people I've asked for an autograph.

The way the event was handled brought criticism from some fans.

Promoters of the event had said they would sell at 7 a.m. 500 admittance wristbands to the meet-and-greet.

The only problem was that by midnight the crowd waiting outside the mall in the wind and cold rain had far exceeded 500 and a decision was made to distribute the wristbands about seven hours early.

"The crowd kept growing and growing and growing," said Darrell Kinsley, a marketing representative for the Hot Topic clothing store chain that is sponsoring Pattinson's tour to promote his upcoming movie based on the "Twilight" series of books adored by young girls.

"We were worried about the welfare of the people standing out here. We didn't want people to stand in line for seven hours and not get in."

The first three in line--Stacy York, 26, Jennifer Popplewell, 26, and Armour, 22--left their home town of Indianapolis at 10 p.m. and got here at about midnight to be the first in line for the star.

"It isn't just 'Twilight' that brought us here,' said Armour.

"It's his previous work," said Popplewell.

Armour continued, "We like his other work, such as 'The Bad Mother's Handbook' (a TV drama in the UK) and 'The Haunted Airman' (another TV drama in the UK)."

Disappointed fans who showed up later this morning, only to find they had been shut out, protested.

"It's false advertising," Vanessa Vasquez said. "They said 7:30 today. I would have been here to get tickets on time."

Robert Pattinson: "I don’t quite know why I got so lucky but yeah, it’s just ridiculous and I’m pretty happy. Yeah, definitely pretty happy."

Another great read! Rob seems quite open even without sharing beyond his comfort zone.

imgboxThe Telegraph Robert Pattinson interview: "I don't need therapy"

He has millions of female fans, he lives in Los Angeles and paparazzi dog his footsteps wherever he goes; yet it would be difficult to find a young man less interested in embracing his stardom than Robert Pattinson. The 28-year-old actor refuses to go the Hollywood route of big houses, wardrobes full of designer clothes and roles that utilise his boyish good looks.

He has even rejected the idea of taking the near-obligatory therapy route followed by nearly every self-absorbed star in Hollywood, although he jokes: “I would love to go into therapy but it makes me too anxious.”

Then, more seriously, he adds: “I’ve been talking to a lot of people about it and I don’t know. I kind of like my anxiety in a funny sort of way and I like my peaks and troughs. Luckily depression never lasts long with me.”

We are talking in a Beverly Hills hotel suite about his new film The Rover, set in a post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, in which he is totally unrecognisable as Ray, a twitchy, dirt-caked, slow-witted lost soul with rotting teeth. He joins forces with Eric (Guy Pearce), a man of few words who is on the trail of a gang of thieves who stole his only possession, his car. Ray is a role as far removed from the handsome Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies as Pattinson could get – which suits him fine.

For three years, Pattinson lived virtually non-stop with the adventures of the brooding vampire and his romance with the mortal schoolgirl Bella, played by Kristen Stewart. It was the role that, whether he likes it or not, made him one of the hottest and most in-demand young actors in the world. He caused an army of female fans to leave their families and homes to follow him to wherever he was filming.

“I had a bit of a struggle at first because my life really contracted and I couldn’t do a lot of the stuff I used to be able to do," he admits. "But once I got through that a year or two ago I just accepted my life is something else and now I can’t really remember what it was like before, So it’s much easier to deal with.

“It seems much longer ago than two years since the last Twilight came out and I think as you get older you get a bit more confident with every movie you do, so it’s been a gradual graduation to this.”

Pattinson's "graduation" has included a romantic melodrama (Remember Me), a period circus piece (Water for Elephants), a tale of the French nobility (Bel Ami) and playing an introspective Wall Street tycoon (Cosmopolis). He will soon be seen as T.E. Lawrence in the yet-to-be-released Nicole Kidman film Queen of the Desert and he is a wannabe actor and writer in David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars which, like The Rover, was well-received at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

“I’m curious to know whether people who liked the Twilight movies will come and see things like The Rover,” he says. “Hopefully they’ll enjoy it. I try to do ambitious projects but I don’t know if people are going to like them. You just try and do things which are challenging and hopefully people will appreciate that.”

Although his name is regularly linked with big studio projects such as Star Wars and superhero movies (recent rumours had him cast as a young Han Solo in a Star Wars spin-off), he denies he has ever been offered them and is wary about becoming involved in another franchise. “They don’t come into my orbit and I don’t really see myself in a lot of mainstream parts,” he says. “I’ve never been part of the group that gets these roles.”

He particularly enjoyed working on the low-budget apocalyptic thriller The Rover because it was filmed entirely on location in the scorching heat of the Australian outback, where he existed on a diet of “white bread and barbecue sauce”, and where there were no fans or photographers to pester him. “I just loved it because not only was there no one trying to find you, there’s no one there at all. I wasn’t worrying about anyone trying to sneak up on me or anything so I found it incredibly peaceful and relaxing.”

To land the role he had to go through an arduous four-hour audition for writer-director David Michod, whose previous film was the well-reviewed Animal Kingdom. “For the first 45 minutes I had to deal with my own neuroses before I’d do any kind of acting and I think David recognised this and when I let myself calm down I was fine.”

Michod recalls: “We would do a take and Robert would go, ‘Oh I was so terrible.’ But he wasn’t terrible, he’s just very English and very self-deprecating. I knew within five minutes of our four hour audition I’d found the actor to play Ray.”

Pattinson’s global travels keep him away from his home in London, which he isn’t too sorry about. “I spent two months in England last year which is the longest I’ve spent there in six years, which was nice, but I always go back to England at Christmas time and get so depressed that I’m glad to get back to Los Angeles," he says. "I’ve really grown to like L.A and I guess it’s my home at the moment.”

His current home is other people’s houses. “I had this great house which I bought four or five years ago," he says. "It was incredible, absolutely completely crazy. It was like Versailles, with an incredible garden, but I just stayed in one room. I sold it because I suddenly realised I’m not quite old enough to be dealing with plumbing and stuff. So I spent about six months borrowing peoples’ houses, which was nice. Now I’m renting a place which is much smaller.”

Pattinson laughs easily and often and is much more relaxed and at ease than in the early days when he resembled a startled deer caught in the headlights. Despite the massive changes in his life in a relatively short time, he has kept his feet firmly on the ground. Although he appears in advertisements for Christian Dior, he is certainly no fashion plate; he lost nearly all his clothes following a recent house move and hasn't bothered to replace them. “I’ve started wearing the same thing pretty much every day like a uniform,” he says. “I haven’t taken this jacket off for weeks,” indicating the black, slightly moth-eaten jacket he is wearing that nevertheless looks good on him.

“It’s ridiculous. I don’t understand how I don’t have any clothes. I’ve basically stolen every item of clothing that anyone’s ever given me for a premiere but in my closet there are literally about three things. I’m sure there’s some kind of random storage box full of them somewhere.”

Working for Dior, he says with a chuckle, is “the most ridiculous job in the world. I have to do barely anything and I just occasionally have to go to some Dior parties, which is great.”

Pattinson was born in Barnes, West London, and joined the local theatre club as a teenager. He was spotted by a casting agent and made his screen debut in 2004 in a German television production; he was then bizarrely cast as Reese Witherspoon’s son in Vanity Fair, although his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.

He achieved some recognition for his role as the brave but doomed Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and he had a brief flashback cameo in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He had been torn between an acting career and going to university but the Harry Potter roles convinced him to stick with acting. He played a shell-shocked Second World War airman in a BBC Four production, The Haunted Airman, but then spent the best part of the next two years unemployed. His agent persuaded him to try his luck in Los Angeles so, armed with little but an English accent and a sense of humour, he did.

He was not sure whether he wanted the Twilight role when he was first offered it after auditioning by performing a love scene with the already-cast Kristen Stewart; she persuaded the director, Catherine Hardwicke, that he was the actor to play the troubled vampire Edward Cullen. “I’d read the book and couldn’t really picture myself in the role of this handsome, perfect guy,” he says. “I didn’t know how big it was going to be."

He was romantically involved with his co-star Stewart for three years but the romance ended when she reportedly had an affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. He is currently dating model Imogen Kerr although he politely declines to talk about his romantic life.

Reviewing how he arrived at where he is in life he uses a word which features frequently in his vocabulary – “ridiculous".

"I’m extremely lucky which always makes me a little nervous,” he says. “I don’t quite know why I got so lucky but yeah, it’s just ridiculous and I’m pretty happy. Yeah, definitely pretty happy.”

THE LIMO DRIVER

“Plus we’re both dual - disorder ”

When Agatha Weiss returns to Los Angeles, she makes an instant connection with the first person she encounters: her limo driver, a would - be screenwriter who chauffeurs the far more successful, and who becomes increasingly entangled in her larger - than - life drama.

Taking the role of Jerome is leading star Robert Pattinson, who wanted to work with Cronenberg again on the heels of taking the lead role in Cosmopolis (coincidentally, Pattinson played a billionaire who is a limo passenger throughout that film.)

photo tumblr_n41e3sJ1zO1ql8r0ko5_r1_250.gifHe was one of the first cast members to sign on, which Martin Katz says helped buoy the project. “Robert’s enthusiasm for Maps to the Stars is one of the things that really got us underway. Jerome is not a large role but it’s very significant in the story and his joining the cast gave us a terrific amount of momentum,” recalls the producer. “In a sense he is playing Bruce Wagner, who was himself at one time a limo driver and unemployed writer.”

Cronenberg was thrilled to reunite with Pattinson, and in such a different kind of role. “I think Rob was really happy to be part of an ensemble,” he says. “But Jerome is also a critical character, a lovely character and it was a chance for Rob to give a more naturalistic performance. I knew he would be fabulous and he was.”

Pattinson’s experience working on Cosmopolis with Cronenberg was so profound that he agreed to the role of Jerome before reading the script. But when he finally sat down to read it, he recalls, “Within two pages I was thinking wow, this is so unbelievably different and hilarious. I don't even know what people are going to make of this, but it feels dangerous. It’s sort of satirical but it’s also a ghost story and it’s also a kind of thriller. It defies genre.”

He came to see Maps To The Stars as more than just another L.A. story. “It’s really about 10 people who lie to themselves – right up until the end,” he summarizes.

Yet within all that, Pattinson sees Jerome as the most ordinary of the film’s roster of outrageously deluded and desperate characters -- typical of a certain kind of everyday L.A. dreamer, a regular guy with a regular job who nevertheless always believes h e is just one move away from becoming a major actor and writer.

photo Crazy.gif“Jerome would never accept that he is just a limo driver. I think he feels he’s just waiting for his break,” Pattinson observes. “And yet, he’s seemingly the only one in this story who's not going insane -- or who isn’t a ghost. He's a fairly normal guy, which is slightly odd for me, as well.”

Working with his fellow cast members was another big draw for Pattinson. Of Julianne Moore, he says: “She’s hilarious and also very sane, which is kind of ironic given who Havana Segrand is. And she shifts so subtly into character, you barely notice what she is doing. It’s kind of amazing.”

He worked most closely with Mia Wasikowska as Agatha, who comes to rely on Jerome as her sole friend in the city. “I knew Mia was going to be wonderful in this,” he says. “She’s so lovely that it was horrible for me to watch Agatha be bullied by her entire family.”

photo Bows.gifFor Cronenberg, the chance to work with cast members like Pattinson and Gadon multiple times is one of the most gratifying aspects of his career. “It's really beautiful for me to see that blossoming and the evolution of actors as I work with them, ” he concludes.
