Hollywood Is Watching: Can Robert Pattinson Open A Film?

Article From Remember Me Saturday Blog
In terms of Robert Pattinson, Hollywood has one thing on its mind right now and that's money. Can he open a film on his own? Can the name Robert Pattinson deliver derrieres in seats when it counts, March 12-14, 2010?

Remember Me is Pattinson's first film outside the Twilight franchise. While it has a small budget and is technically considered an indie film without the backing of a huge studio, the media, the general movie-going public and Hollywood itself, have all been busy spinning this film as a rather big litmus test for Pattinson's future as an actor and Hollywood's idea of a movie star.

In a little over 14 months, Pattinson has gone from "that guy in Harry Potter" to one of the brightest, fastest, rising young stars we've had in recent memory. His ethereal face graces the covers of countless magazines and he is the topic of so much baseless gossip across the Internet that even Pattinson has most likely lost track of his own self-described "boring" story. The spotlight has been resting squarely on his shoulders since before Twilight opened in November 2008 and today, it shows little evidence of letting up. But Hollywood wants what it wants and right now, what it wants is proof that Robert Pattinson is more than Edward Cullen and that he can put money in pockets. More money, that is.

While Pattinson became the face of the Twilight saga and arguably the breakout star of a franchise that has raked in well over a billion dollars, this is a vital time for his career. And a career does seem to be what he is quietly intent on seeking.

As a writer named Albrian on an Internet movie blog expressed it, "There is a quiet steely determination to succeed. The self deprecating quotes are a smokescreen for an ambitious young man."

The media constantly churns out stories asking if Robert Pattinson is the the new Depp, new James Dean, the new this, the new that. They desperately want him to be the new something, throwing out impossibly high standards and competitions that can never be won. Depp, Pitt, Clooney, and DiCaprio...all the major movie star names you can think of. Pattinson has been held up to the light and compared against them all, but to anyone with a little common sense, it's kind of like pitting a GED against Ph.D. in terms of sheer experience and acting credits. Of course when has the media (or random people on the Internet) ever had common sense?

Pattinson is a great story; charming, sweet, British and handsome with a huge and very loyal fanbase that believes he's talented. Just how talented? With the likes of Chris Cooper, Kristin Scott Thomas, Allen Coulter and Declan Donnellan among others signing on to work with him, it seems pretty certain that his fans have bet on a good horse.

Pattinson appeared on the Hollywood scene almost overnight. With his now recognizable name on everyone's tongue and flowing out of everyone else's pen, his sudden fame makes him a very easy target. And the media is determined to keep talking about "the new guy." One day he's the golden boy and the next he's being taken to task for the kind of fame he never even dreamed for himself. Depending on date and time, Pattinson is talented, he's not, he smells, he doesn't, he's stuck up, he's down to earth, he's hilarious, he's whines too much, he's sweet, he's mean, he's in, he's out, he's up, he's down.

The truth? He's just human, and by all accounts, a pretty decent, gracious and very grateful guy who's got to be overwhelmed by the wishy washy celebrity vortex he's found himself in during the past year.

Then there's Hollywood, and Hollywood is nothing if not impatient. Apparently time and experience is something Hollywood doesn't believe in anymore. "You've only been famous for a short while and you've only acted in a handful of teeny, tiny films few people have ever even seen? Too bad! You're "it" and you're now expected to open a film and open it big or we'll tear you down some more, Robert Pattinson! You must earn your fame young man!"

Sound like the dreams Hollywood is made of?

As the happy man in Pretty Woman says, "Welcome to Hollywood! What's your dream? Everybody comes here; this is Hollywood, land of dreams. Some dreams come true, some don't; but keep on dreamin' - this is Hollywood. Always time to dream, so keep on dreamin."

Of course the media and the public (not to mention random people on the Internet) don't exactly know what Robert Pattinson's dream actually is. All evidence seems to point to Pattinson wanting good career as a working actor where he has the ability to make interesting, even risky choices -- A career that he can be proud of and a career in which the media doesn't compare him to anyone but Robert Pattinson. After all, he never asked for the comparisons in the first place. The guy just took a job.

Only time will tell if Robert Pattinson's dream parallel's Hollywood's dream for him and vice versa.

Stars rise and fall. We live in a celebrity culture that feeds on building people up to tear them down. It's the law of nature in Hollywood and all over the world, really. And like it or not, Remember Me is a test. Hollywood will be watching -- watching to see what happens at the box office opening weekend, watching to see if Robert Pattinson can pull in a wider audience sprinkled with all ages and sexes, watching to see if an audience will accept him in a role that doesn't require white makeup and an annoying love interest named Bella.

That's about the only thing Pattinson can be sure of right now; Hollywood will be watching. Needless to say, with the guy who flatly refused media training and seems to be very much his own man floating around in a big, fat, sea of sameness, Hollywood should be getting a damn good show.

And heck, should the big test falter this time out for Rob, remember...Hollywood loves comeback stories. Comeback stories are what it's built on.

Nice pressure Hollywood!

Well if we, The Robsessed, have our say, it will have a great opening weekend and successful run in the theater. We need to mount (hehe) a Team Rob campaign across all the Twi-blogs to make sure all see it. Ideas, anyone?

There's campaigns all over the blogs & Twitter... but I really don't think it's going to be a problem..

It's a great story-has a great cast... and of course Rob....it is a lot of pressure... and he is ambitious... This opens doors to him getting backed for other projects.. Plus he's got the EP role besides lead actor...

We have total faith Rob!

I finally finished reading the script for "Remember Me" although it made me want to cry at the end it was still a very good script. Even if this movie doesn't do well he should be proud of it and for stepping away from Edward Cullen for a little while.

um is water wet? I think if hollywood has to ask that ? they're dumber than I thought!

LOVE THIS BANNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the Hotness...

There's a lot of pressure on Rob, for this film. But I believe it will do just fine. Just Rob's fanbase alone will bring in the masses. And them with word of mouth, it will really take off. Just my thoughts.

I think Rob has a strong personality and knows what he wants. "Remember Me" is gonna be a success and one more step in his brilliant career. I saw "Little Ashes" and I was impressed with Rob. He shows great maturity for complex characters.
Remember Me -Tyler Roth, will ruin me. We love Rob!!!!

I recently saw the RM trailer in a movie theater with an older friend who has zero interest in Twilight. (I had a stupid grin on my face while watching it. LOL) Even *she* leaned over to me and whispered, "That looks like something I'd like."

As a Rob fan (she knows I think he's cute but has no idea of the extent of my interest ;-) ), I was thrilled that someone totally outside the stereotypical Twilight demographic is considering seeing this film. I think his large fan base will carry it the first weekend--then if word-of-mouth is good, the rest will board the train.

Sweet Jesus, I intend to see this movie at least 3 or more times and I'm sure a lot of other people feel the same. It won't be a problem, but even if Rob doesn't end up being another Clooney or Pitt, I will still love and adore this man.

You know what? I don't really think it's that important if he can! He's already got a huge and very loyal fanbase. These people (like us) love Rob as a talented actor, an interesting, so nice and funny character... he's nothing like one of Hollywood's usual heartthrobs, that's why he has already become this huge star and why we all love him so much. And I don't see Rob even WANTING to become the big blockbuster hero - no matter whether Hollywood's producers decide if he can be their next cashcow or not... I think Rob will always choose the really interesting parts for himself, even if he has to do smaller movies for this.

Anyway... Remember me is a small movie. I don't think it's designed to be a big blockbuster. So it surely wouldn't be fair to base judgement about Rob being "bankable" or not on Remember me's box-office results. But I think it will surely be relatively successful and I'm really looking forward to see it!

Sorry for my english... sometimes it's a little difficult to explain your thoughts in a foreign language ;o)

I read this article yesterday like Kelly on his IMDB and was thrilled to read such a POSITIVE article for a change. My euphoria didn't last long as later on there were also some very nasty, spiteful comments regarding his acting ability, looks and general acting career in Hollywood.
I can only surmise that there is a lot of jealousy and bitterness in the industry with regard to Rob's meteoric rise to fame on the strength of two popular ' teen ' films to the point where what should be the next 'step up the career ladder' with a new film and totally different role has now become a make or break career scenario. It's NOT FAIR and puts an enormous amount of pressure on his shoulders when he should be enjoying the position that Twilight has put him in ( maybe he does I can't say for sure!)
Whatever happens I for one hope and pray that Remember Me is a success and that he does garner some positive critical acclaim because I'm sick and tired of reading negative stuff about him and this piece of writing was like the sun coming out on a cloudy day.

Well anyway...you will all realise that:-

I flippin' love this man!!!!

Ah, what was the question? This movie is already a hit, what other movie out there has gotten this much attention while it was filming and during post-production? They just need something to write about. But I LOVED their treatment of our Rob in the article.

Anonymous said...

Great article. Very fair and sticked to the real thing.
I don't think RM was meant to be a blockbuster as Twilight was, no one can expect this. And I'm pretty sure that, for a low budget and alternative movie, it's going to do very well. And most of all because of our Rob. ;)

I don't think they need to worry about this film not having good opening numbers.

Rob fans as ecstatic about seeing him in something outside of the Twilight franchise...
I fully intend on seeing it a "few" times and will be there opening weekend to help bring in the numbers.

Hollywood needs to realize he can be self deprecating and ambitious. He's a hard working individual who brings his "A" game to the set.

Maybe this eye opening will bring the funds n necessary to get Unbound Captives rolling, because we are all waiting with baited breath for Commanche Rob...

We already know that he's MORE than just Edward Cullen! ; ) This was a great article actually---always have had the impression that Rob really does know what he's doing career-wise. The script is great, as is the cast---RM should do really well at the box office! Go Rob!

Loisada said...

Summit confirmed how important the box office take is to them by reining in this movie at PG-13.

We'll all be there, but will a solid horde of younger Edwardhards show up as well? They'll need to be coaxed to come in and see their heartthrob in a less flattering role in an even more angsty film.

It can open very well, but I think it may take more marketing than we Robsessors realize, so I expect to see some serious promo come March. I only hope it doesn't get too heavy handed and make critics even more ill disposed towards Rob... Because for many, he is already that guy they love to hate. Envious idiots!

A more appropriate title for this article may be "Why can't Hollywood leave Rob Pattinson alone?" I know it's wishful thinking, just sayin...

Having Rob as the lead in this film is going to be enough for it to exceed studio expectations. It probably did not cost that much to make and will definitely wind up making a profit. Whatever they don't make in the theater, they will more than make up for in DVD sales. It's a win win for Summit.

I'm sure Summit execs are thanking their lucky stars for Rob.

BTW, forgive me, but what does FILTM mean???!! I can't figure it out, please help. Thank you.

Juli87 said...

I'm afraid the Summit marketing is really bad... In fact, here in Germany they don't even show the trailer yet(and this is the european country with the most inhabitants - which means: Beside Rob's fans, 82 million people never heard of Remember me)... don't know if they already show it in the rest of Europe. I hope so! But it's not that likely... So probably Remember me will do big in the US and UK, but in the rest of Europe it will be a rather small indi flick. It is a real shame... Summit sucks!

RPCinemaMajo said...

I have no doubt Robert's talent as an actor He will do great in the movie and many critics will have to keep mum ...

It worries me because if the ticket is not opening as well the critics are going to talk about Rob ...

A very good opening for this movie in under budget and without the promotion would say Twilight rate is 25 to 30 $ that's my premise ...

Once more sorry for my English

First off...Leann, if you're reading this I will get that e-mail off to you but my computer has caught a cold. I'm using a friends and it won't let me access that e-mail. Just didn't want you thinking I was flaking off again.

As someone who just loves to make her point, I'd be a liar if I didn't say that this article has hit the nail right smack dab on the head (and if you'll recall, we were just discussing this very thing the other day) Hollywood is indeed watching and it is VERY important how this film does. If it fails, will it ruin his career? Of course not as he's still got another 2-3 Twilight films to continue raking the $$$ in. But in terms of Rob himself, if it fails then yes, some of the bloom will come off of his rose.

Two months after Titanic opened in December of '97, DiCaprio had another film open. It was a remake of The Man In The Iron Mask (a costume drama which traditionally, do not do well at the box office). This one did. It was at the height of 'Leo mania' and that week, Titanic was still number one at the box office with 26 mil and this new one opened at number two with 25 million and just THAT opening alone established that he could 'open' a film...on just the strength of his name alone AND this is what Hollywood is looking to see if Rob can do. And if cannot open a film during the height of Twilight mania, then when can he? This is how Hollywood will look at this. This is how they think.

Hollywood is also watching to see if Robert Pattinson is going to be the next Hayden Christensen or Orlando Bloom; both sensations in huge franchises with huge teen fan bases whose stardom cooled once those franchises ended and those teenagers got a little older and moved onto other interests OR if he's going to be the next Leonardo DiCaprio with a substantial career (one of the leading actors of his generation with a handful of Oscar nominations under his belt). My guess? He's going the way of DiCaprio. Why?

Because his fan base goes way beyond teenagers. Because he is a fine actor and alot of his peers have said so; those he's worked with and just listen to what alot of actors are saying about him. They think he's good and I believe not just based on Twilight. Alot of them have gotten their hands on HTB and LA and they can see a young actor who's willing to take chances. I could write an essay on why I believe he was 'perfect' as Edward Cullen. He nailed that character. Maybe not in the way that some wanted, who expected the 21st century teenage hunk of the Meyer novels. I sometimes wonder if even she herself truly understood that character. When a writer has to go back and re-write a character because the audience has misread him, then as a writer, you have screwed up. And I believe she did. Fortunately, they found an actor, who found the character, not just the shell of it on the written page. Go rent Splendor In The Grass and Rebel Without A Cause and tell me that you don't see the ghosts of Warren Beatty and James Dean in Rob's performance as Edward. He nailed that character and his acting is not stiff and wooden. He gave a very understated, elegant and internalized performance.

Got one more thing to say here, but I think I'll make it in a second post.

nikola6 said...

Sorry. Had to go back through yesterday's stuff that I missed and Goz...the 'bone' song and pics were hilarious (and fucking gorgeous). Congradulations on a fabulous website, the best Rob Pattinson site on the web and believe me, I looked at damn near all of them before signing up here. Much to your pain and chagrin I'm sure. I profoundly apologize for my locquatious(sp) ways and thanks for not sending me e-mails telling me to shut the fuck up as you would be entirely justified in doing so.

And with that, I must adieu. No more time for that second post which is fine as I said more than enough with the first one. I'll just say this much...

If he's going to have that substantial career, then he's got to expand his fanbase beyond Twilight because eventually, all this madness will fade away. And I think he's gonna do it because he's an originial and Hollywood puts a premium on that. There hasn't been anyone like him in years. And Hollywood knows that too. And don't think for a minute that he doesn't want that substantial career. He does.

I don't think he wants to be the next 'cookie cutter' leading man of Hollywood, but don't think for a moment that he isn't ambitious. Oh yes he is. He wants his own production company so that he can make the kinds of films that he wants. He isn't just interested in being a 'gun for hire.' He wants to be a filmmaker. Think Warren Beatty; an actor, screenwriter, director and producer. You gotta have a shitload of ambition to aspire to that. And he does. And I think he's got the talent to achieve it.

From day one, my gut told me...keep your eye on this one because we haven't seen the likes of him in Hollywood in a very long time. And we haven't.

I loved this article very fair, if I remember correctly, I remember that Leonardo Dicaprio's next movie after Titanic was a big flop and yet he went far with his career, and I highly doubt that his fanbase was ever as avid as Robert's. I loved Titanic, it was my favorite movie when I was like 12/13 years old and it still is one of my favorite movies, however never once did I think that Leonardo Dicaprio had sex appeal. He was always good looking to me and fairly attractive, but no where near Robert's sex appeal and charisma.

Like Juli said the reason that many people love Robert is not just because he is a good actor with phenomenal sex appeal, but also because he is a very genuine and down to earth person, so that when you watch him in interviews one can't help but become a fan. And I LOVE that he isn't trained, he doesn't need to be!

And I agree that it is very unfair to Robert to put so much pressure on him concerning this movie, when it is a fairly small movie when compared to other movies. However I have no doubt that RM will be a success, I mean it cost 20 million to make right? So if it makes 40 million that double it's cost price, which means it's a sucess. And I think that it will make more then that. Plus Emilie seems like a good actress, articulate and nice. But of course Robert is the major draw, alongside the storyline of course if the storyline turns out to be bad, why should Robert be blamed?

Mary you said you read the script and from your comments I'm getting that RM will have a sad ending? (bummer I was hoping for a happy ending *sigh*). Anyways RM looks great and I'm going to check it out anyway.

Oh and about the PG13 rating, I'm glad actually because I don't like watching movies where the R rating is for language, it really irritates me if I have to endure the "f" word every sentence and it makes me lose respect for the character and the storyline (it seems so juvenile). Now about the love scenes, I don't think we should worry about that, I mean the notebook had a good love scene and it was PG13, Titanic was PG13 and Kate Winslet was shown semi-naked, so for those of you wanting to see Robert's derriere (winks lol) it's not out of the realm of possibility with the PG13 rating. (But really if we get a good storyline, good/decent/likable characters, and steamy but tasteful love scenes that's enough, they don't need to be explicit)

Now maybe I should go watch the trailer again, I find myself missing it, it has been a while since I've last watched it.

I don't even know, when remember me will come to theatre in my country but it's obvious, date will be later than 12 march so I think first week's results will not show real results about how bankable Rob is. Comparing RM and Twilight Saga is ridiciolus. There are so many people around the world who don't like Twilight but like Rob so this movie will attract these people too. Plus I read the script and RM is going to be brilliant. If Rob did not involve this movie, I would watch. Also people have to stop see him as money maker. He is just Rob, not money maker.
