I am so glad I did not read any spoilers before I saw the movie last night. It was wonderful and I was shocked at the end. I knew there was a shocker at the end but I did not expect that. When I saw the date on the chalkboard I wanted to screen outloud. I would love to here what Robert thinks about the ending now that I know what happens.
I didn't think I was going to get to see the movie in theatres since I have two small children and I really did not think my husband would go see it with me, but he said yesterday about going (he knows my love for Robert) and he actually like the movie as well.
Robert was great in it which I am very happy for him. I am glad he is not going to be stuck in the Twilight roles (although I still love love love Edward). Now it is the count down to New Moon and then Eclipse!!

CeeCee said...

You know it's odd, but I think I'm starting to resent Edward just a tad. If he's keeping people away from seeing Rob in other roles then he needs to just cool it. Remember Me was such a beautiful movie loaded with great performances and ideas. It deserves to be seen!

So beat it Edward!

(ps is it crazy to talk to a fictional character like that?)

(pps Beat it. Edward. Did I just say that?!o_O)

Yea!!! thank you for this post I have been wanting to talk about this movie but I don't want to give it away to people who did not see it yet.

I thought it was really good. Was I the only one caught off guard by the 9/11 connection at the end? When Alley and Tyler are in Global Politics the teacher says "In light of current terrorist attacks..." So I thought that 9/11 had already happened. I did have a feeling that Tyler was going to die but I did not expect him to be in one of the twin towers. Tears instantly.

Also Tyler (Rob) was such a great older brother. I loved that it was a family drama with real issues and problems.

I know there needed to be a conflict between Alley and Tyler to seperate them. I just don't understand why he need to keep it a secret that her father arrested him.

Jane said...

Well Karen, You just gave it away. The reason Tyler kept the secret about her father. He thought she would think he was just using her to get back at her father which is the way it started out then he fell in love with her but she didn't belive him at first. the movie was fantastic, Rob was awesome.

Ok.. i just saw the film and it was really good. Different to what i expected but very good and though provoking.
I was with a large group of people. Some liked it and some didn't. The cinema was half full & that was in the evening as well :-(

Roberts performance was great and the relationship between him and the sister was a highlight for me. All the other cast members played their characters well as well.

But i think people should make their own minds. I saw Alice last week & was disappointed but i saw Greenzone today and that was good as well.

It is a free country and people can like whatever movie they want. Not everybody likes Rob enough to go out to actually see one of his movies. He will always have women support but he doesn't have the male support the way Leo or Johnny do. That will come with time as he builds up his body of work. It's all good Rob will be fine.

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

Karen,
he kept it a secret because he had no idea he was going to fall in love with her.

All he wanted to do was just take her out, charm her, then dump her...

By the time he realized how much he cared for her, he was too scared to tell her the truth...and to top it off, her dad hurt her and ended up moving in with him, there's no way he could hurt her more...

Well...I had not read many spoilers. The only thing that I knew is that the movie took place during that time period. I thought it was an incredible movie. Honest, sad and real. I took my 14 year old daughter. I'm sure some wouldn't have, but I did. She is a huge fan and really wanted to go. She also loved the movie. She was only 4 1/2 when 9/11 happened and knows only what she's learned in school, and of course she lives in a post 9/11 world... When we got home, she asked about it, what I remembered, what I was doing when it happened, what I felt like, and asked to go on line to see the news footage from that day. It was intense and harsh, but I'm glad she wanted to know. For me the end of this movie was brave and necessary because even in our fiction, we cannot ignore forever that this happened to us. The performances were so heartwrenching and real throughout the movie, and the treatment of the ending was thought provoking and vigilant of the feelings of those that lived it. Contrary to the opinions of some of this movie's critics, I didn't find the ending's portrayal of this family's loss on this day gratuitous at all. About time. It happened and leaving it out of all fictional accounts of American life is ridiculous. Good for them. As for Rob's ability to bring a character like this to life, I never had any doubts and I am proud. Ruby...amazing. Emilie...amazing. Everyone. kudos and thank you.

Megan, I read the script and knew what was coming and I still wanted to scream when I saw the date. My daughter who was with me didn't know about the ending and as soon as she saw the chalk board she involuntarily gasped and there were several murmers of "Oh no!" in the theater.

I really loved the movie. I think I may see it every day that I can while it is playing close to my home. Rob was fantastic and I loved the interaction between him and Aidan.

The love story was so realistic as we watched it unfold. Emilie deRavid was very impressive. I loved her from the minute she told the cab driver "Queens and I don't want to hear about it." She gave him so many openings to talk about her father and he didn't take advantage of any of them.

I loved his relationship with Caroline. So sweet and didn't your heart just break for her at the end. She lost both brothers and although her father stepped in finally at the end, I don't think that would ever replace Tyler. He was her hero. Rob was wonderful with the actress and it really showed in the interactions between the characters.

I really thought every part was well played. For me the message of the film was about family and loved ones and the mark you leave on the people you love no matter what. The whole line about leaving your foot prints never fading from the ones who love you pretty much says it all.

I was so proud of Robert in this film. He has a natrual talent that is only going to get better the more experience he has. I feel bad for him that everything he does is under such a microscope that even this small film is expected to be a blockbuster. The interview posted here on Robsessed where he talks about how he is learning kind of front and center in the public eye puts added stress on him. It wasn't what he would have chosen, but he seems to be handling it very, very well.

I'm in my 40s and I don't ever remember an actor in whom I have felt more invested. I just love this guy and want him to get every bit of fame, fortune, recognition, and self satisfaction from his career that he wants for himself. I teach at a university and told my class on Saturday about Remember Me urging them to go see it. I hope some of them will. It is a movie I am proud to recommend.

Well said Nellieduff!

ITA that we can't pretend it didn't happen by keeping it out of fictional movies...

Will, Allen & Rob were extremely brave to tackle this and no matter what... this will open the minds of people and make them think....

For me, the tears started when he saw the pics of himself and his siblings on his fathers computer, then pretty much continued throughout the rest of the show. I thought the 9/11 tie in was done very well and very tastefully, as I dont think America is ready to see planes crashing into buildings, people jumping from windows, etc. Too painful. I feel like I am 100% sold on Roberts capabilities now. He was absolutely exquisite in the scenes with his little sister, and he showed so much more than smoking and brooding. His performance was wonderful.

GOROB said...

I hate this! Rob does a great job in this movie and no one is going to see it! Summit did not do a great job advertising this movie! I hardly ever saw an ad for it! You hardly ever see movies like this, I thought it was wonderful, great acting by all and it doesn't get an audience! I hate that people will say Rob can't open a movie and can't act! Can somebody please give me some light at the end of the tunnel! Why didn't the Twilight fans show up? So stop screaming at him and stalking him so he can have his life back if you're not going to support his movies! When they are screaming at the "Eclipse" promotions it is going to be so bitter sweet to me and I assume Rob also!

RATING- 5 stars!!!
I loved RM!!! I went spoiler free and I'm so glad!!! I was shocked at the ending and I did not see it coming at all until the chalk board of course. I think the acting was very good and the chemistry between all the actors was very believable. I am disappointed at the box office totals for opening weekend though. I thought for sure more Twilight fans would support the movie.

Brooke Moss said...

But......can I just add..... the clip where he is on the statue with his sister, and looks over his shoulder with the cigarette hanging out of his mouth, eye squinted, a'la James Dean.........DAMN. I almost lost my cool.

@nellieduff: moved to hear the film prompted a dialogue and shared experience for you and your daughter - from one generation to the next. If a movie can do that, it's worth it. :)

the movie did stir up conversation with those who I attended with. What were you doing that day, etc?

Looks like it came in 4th for the weekend and for a first post twilight saga breakout movie I think it shows his credibility as an actor.

I think they tackled the ending with grace and tact. It wasn't gratuituous; no harsh images and for that I was extremely grateful. The thought of what was/happened was gut and heartwrenching enough - no visual of actualities was necessary.

cher said...

I can't believe the critics are so harsh on this movie. In Rotten Tomatos, the rate is lower than New Moon. It is impossible! I feel so bad. Hope the cast don't read them.

I loved the movie. Rob was brilliant and so as everyone else in the film! Can't trust those critics who rated "up in the air" 98%. Whatever..

shirleegirl said...

I loved the movie - I went yesterday all by myself because I couldn't get anyone to go with me and I was determined not to miss it and am so happy I didn't. Rob, Emelie and Ruby were excellent, Pierce and Chris were good also. The love scenes, I think I blushed when he moaned out loud and the ending ... well, no words, I cried like a baby. The part that made me cry the most; however, was when Caroline went to the party and the cruel girls cut her hair - I didn't expect that and it broke my heart. My heart came back down into my chest when Tyler took her to school and scared the little brat in front of everybody - effing fantastic! Will go see it again next week again.

Lexi C. said...

a lot of people are saying here why didn't the twilight fans come out and support this movie? first of all, the movie is not you happy-go-lucky teen love movie, it's deep, it's about loss, family and coping with pain, and that is not what the twilight demografic (mainly teens) are going to see.

This is a small film, that just cuz Rob is in it, is expected to be blockbuster, and it's not. it's deeper than that... maybe as the time goes, it will become a sleeper hit but if doesn't make a gazzilion bucks, i'm sure Rob is proud of this movie, and hearing everybody talk about his perfomance, i'm sure he grew a lot as an actor.

rob is extremely brave in choosing this movie, mainly cuz it touches a subject (9/11) that is still very hard for some people, and that is what may bother some people.

I know that in hollywood, opening weekend is what matters, but this movie may just have a longer life that a lot of crappy ass film that make a lot of money. Rob still got lot of things to do and learn and just cuz haters say he can't open a movie, doesn't mean he never will. He is smart and driven and that is going to make him have a long career. (p.s. take daniel day lewis as an example, never being a huge box office draw, he is still one og the best actors out there and still makes good movies)

Can't wait to see RM and lot more from Rob (also dying for twilight saga to be complete and done, so he can freaking move on from that)

nellieduff said...

Thanks RPattzgirl. I has just been bothering me that most of the negative critique that this movie has been receiving is because of it's "gratuitous" use of the 9/11 tragedy. I think the fact that 9 1/2 years later the fact that it has NEVER been included as part of a fictional account of American life has been a white elephant and thank goodness it was finally tackled by someone who did it with such tenderness and love, with no horrific images, only everyone's memory of how they felt on that day. It also will make a younger generation want to know more, ask their parents and older siblings how it really was, rather than only having school textbook account on which to go. All that has overshadowed the quality of the performances here. They were amazing, all of them. I hope that opening weekend will cause a delayed "word of mouth" exodus to this movie. It's been a long time since there's been one like this. Go Allen! Go Rob!

Oops - forgot to mention Tyler's friend Aidan, he was hilarious

The movie and Rob's acting are brilliant. Rob had me from the minute he stumbled in from the fire escape w/cigarette dangling. OMG. Not enough superlatives for Rob's acting abilities.
I think the ending was very, very well done and cannot be ignored. If some audience members were shocked and disappointed by the ending, then can you imagine barely touching on the shock of those people who actually had friends and family members there on that day! I am still emotional thinking about this.
Excellent script and acting from all cast. Loved Aiden and Ally's characters.

Well I saw it yesterday afternoon by myself, came home crying not because of the ending but because the strength of Robs performance, I saw a whole new dimension to that mans acting ability and he will make a name for himself.

That evening my adult sons and husband informed me that we were all going, if I thought it was that good of a movie then hell why not.

When the movie was over you could hear a pin drop in the theatre it was only about half full, but no one there made a move to leave until after the credits were at least half way done.

Two young girls behind me asked my husband what had happened that Tyler died, he told them about 9/11 and they didn't remember any of it having only been 7 at the time.

We live in Canada but my husband is American and I had wondered if he might be upset by the ending, he lost a friend there during that terrible event. But he told me that he was glad that the movie makers had not shied away from putting it in for the simple reason that those 2 girls wondered what had happened and it gave him a opportunity to tell them about 9/11.
I know some critics have remarked that the ending bordered on bad taste I disagree and so does my husband events like 9/11 should never be forgotten and it should be told in movies and stories so people don't forget.

I was very proud of my husband and for those girls that stood there and listened to him, and as were leaving they turned and told the young people standing behind them about 9/11, that's how you keep a memory alive globally.

So way to go Rob, not only did you make a kick ass movie and delight so many people with a stellar performance, you contributed to the global conscience.

I mentioned this in the *Remember Me Saturday* thread but it bears repeating here.

Critics, by definition, are going to be critical. In the case of Robert Pattinson, they're going to be overly so.

Many of the negative reviews I've read are nothing but sour grapes given by jealous and simple minded Critics.

To this day, there's countless people who think Elvis Presley was just "lucky" rather than an incredibly talented person.

Rather than focus on the naysayers, how 'bout we applaud Rob for making an astounding movie which will be discussed and remembered for countless years to come.

THAT is talent, Folks.

I know it’s off topic, but speaking of spoilers, I have heard rumbles about the WFE script, dated 2009, and I’d just like to remind all who might read it, or the review, that it is a) a draft and b) has been revised. Some have talked about RM not being like the script they read, and were somewhat disappointed. I know a script can be considered a piece of literature in its own right, but it is not a fully realized work until it is a film, and film is a collaborative effort. To echo the thought of one scriptwriter – a script is part of the development process of the film – like tests, and mock-ups, storyboards and so on. It is not written for the audience to see first-hand, but for the filmmakers. If you read a draft, please try to keep that in mind, as seeing the film as somehow ‘lesser’ because it is not exactly like the written script doesn’t do justice to the finished piece. Don't mean to lecture, but I feel very ‘protective’ of WFE. ;)

I saw the movie on Friday, and I am so glad that I did not read any spoilers. I knew 9/11 had something to do with the movie, but like Karen, I though it has already occurred. I didn't even catch that the family went away for Labor Day weekend so it couldn't have happened yet. It was very shocking, and when I realized what was about to happen, I thought I was going to get sick. It impacted me that much.

The movie was well-done and extremely thought provoking. My best friend and I both liked it, and I felt the need to call both of my siblings after the movie just to talk with them. The movie is definitely more about human relationships and family than romance, and it broke my heart that the family lost both of their sons.

I must admit, I had a hard time sleeping after I saw it, and I still can see Tyler standing at the window of his fathers office. Great movie...great message.

i mapped it out because i'm a '90 baby and her mother died in '91.... so it seemed odd that she was 21 when she said her mother passed 10 yrs ago.

but that still didn't stop me from crying like a baby when the ending came. i swear to God the whole theater was in shambles. i mean i cried because of the reminder of that day and then because tyler died.

i still cry every now and then just picturing that scene when he's by the window looking happily out then they pan out and it's the towers... man i'm crying now... i feel like such a baby but that movie was just that GREAT! for evoking so much emotion out of me cuz i hate crying.

I saw remember me opening night and I am going again tonight :) I am one of the unlucky few who watched the today show interview with stupid matt lauer, who did a major no no and gave away a HUGE spoiler so I knew it was coming. BUT I still loved the movie and I'm sure I will love it again later tonight!!

I've seen Remember Me twice this weekend. I was spoiler free going into the first viewing and was quite overwhelmed, not only by Rob's brilliant performance, but by the intensity of the story. Tyler's struggle to cope with his brother's suicide contrasted by his need to care for his little sister really drew me in.

There is so much for the entire cast and crew to be proud of with this production. The script, direction, photography and the brilliant cast of actors all worked together to bring us a beautiful, sensitive, heart wrenching story.

It's true that this may be the first Hollywood film referring to the horror that was 9/11 but, in my opinion, it was done with grace and tact. I'm a New Yorker, and yes my hands were shaking when I saw the date on the chalkboard, but when Tyler was in the elevator on his way to his dad's office and they were going past the 89th floor, I knew it was the WTC. I was stunned that this was the ending...that Tyler would perish on this of all days. I was truly invested in Tyler's character and literally wept at this ending.

I'm not sure I understand where the negative reviews are coming from. It's a beautful, albeit emotional story, well acted and directed.

It wasn't intended to be a giant blockbuster, but a smaller, ensemble piece. I hope a grassroots, word-of-mouth campaign gets people out to see Rob's 'baby'.

He honestly deserves Hollywood's recognition for both his acting and his role as executive producer in this film.

@nellieduff: I am so happy that you were able to share your experience about that tragic day with your daughter and that she wanted to learn more about the event. The film makers are brave to confront that event that changed our way of life in a fictional account and now that they are the first on the big screen, I am certain other films will follow.

@GOROB: I was looking at the number of screens that Remember Me was playing on and the average per screen and actually Remember Me would be in 3rd place because it made more per screen viewing. Entertainment Weekly states that Rob will be unharmed from the $8.3 million weekend gross because the movie cost about $16 million to make, while the Green Zone w/Matt Damon bombed with $14 million weekend gross for a movie that was made for approx. $100 million.

This movie was not a romantic comedy or an action flick, it was more based on reality that has tragic events in a person's life, most people go to movies to get away from reality. I feel that if this movie can at least make back its initial investment, Rob will be in good shape. I remember that Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio did not have hit films either after their breakthrough roles of Edward Scissorhands and Titanic. Rob did an amazing job, the best IMHO, and I feel invested in his career, because when he jumped out of the tree in Harry Potter, I told my friends then that this boy was destined for stardom.

RPnKSaddict said...

I saw it twice and loved it both times. I was crying on a off during the entire movie. There were sad moments and touching moments, and funny moments.

I have to admitt going in that I thought I'd see a hint of "Edward" peek through some time, but I was dead wrong. Rob brought Tyler to life in a monumental way. The range of emotions that he put into the caracter just blew me away.
I have a whole new level of respect and awe for Rob.

The rest of the cast did an amazing job as well. I was extremely shocked from the beginning where Ally's mother was shot right in front of her.

As I watched the movie I fell in love with all the characters but especially Tyler. I had read the script and knew he would be caught in the 9/11 tragedy and I was dreading the end of the movie beacuse I didn't want his family and friends to loose him.

I usually avoid movies like this because of emotional content, but I have to say that it was done in a very tasteful, and respectful manner without loosing the impact or message the story was trying to get across.

It's a movie I plan on seeing several times.

Love the sex scenes. Love the part after the water fight when he gets out of the tub and you see some Robcrack.

Loved Chris Cooper. Loved the comic relief. Loved Ruby and the brother/sister relationship. The tenderness Tyer shows his sister made me love him more. Loved Pierce. Loved the showdown between Pierce and Rob.

Only problem I had was the absent father role and how it was just reslolved after the prank. Growing up with a father like that they generally don’t change. They may change for a few days after a crisis but then it’s the same MO because they don’t know any different. If after Michael’s suicide the dad cut himself off from the family you would expect the same if not more of the same behavior after the shocking ending. Please don’t throw stones at me for saying this. I am only using my own experiences with how I relate the characters.

There are so many things to notice in this film. I still think it will take some time before people recognize it for the jewel it is. I keep pondering small segments. Playful in the shower, toggling to desire, and Ally brings it back to play. Tyler when he returns to the apt after the face off with his father, full of rage, frustration, grief, and impotence that toggles right into a physical need as Ally tries to comfort him. One can see it, feel it, almost taste it. It is amazing that they captured that instant. The moment Tyler realizes that he loves Ally and the tenderness he shows to her. The character of Tyler changes from a mixed up boy to a man before our eyes. The way the colors and patterns are used to build a visual picture as well as the story itself. The sweet relationship between brother and sister. The beginnings of understanding and acceptance between both fathers and their adult children. I could go on and on. If I need to see it again and again, I will not be the only one. Maybe I am overly sentimental but I believe this movie will meet the test of time head on and win.

It is well cast and everyone did a good job. Rob, you were absolutely wonderful. Listen to us rather than the negative critics. After all we are the ones who matter most, aren't we?

Doe anyone else feel weird after watching RM? (I don’t know if ‘weird’ is the right word here but I don’t know how to explain it). I watched the movie last night. I couldn’t sleep until 5:30am because I was thinking about it and today since the time I woke up I have this strange feeling. I feel like, I don’t now how to describe it, moody? kinda empty? I don’t feel like doing anything, I just sit, doing nothing and lines and scenes from the movie pop up in my mind all the time (especially the window scene) and I suddenly start crying..
On the one hand I keep thinking ‘come on, it’s just a movie’ but on the other I know it’s not just a movie.. Duh, RM is gonna haunting me for a long time…

noisefaidaus said...

@valfa89 I don't think your alone, I know I'm sharing some of those same feelings. It has been a very long time since a movie has touched me the way this one has.
I'm still mesmerized by Rob's creation of Tyler and the poser performances by this ensemble cast. I keep revisiting the plot and the little changes in the characters behaviours and perceptions. It really was an amazing movie.
I think I have become so used to things being visually stunning or being over powered by special effects, that to have a movie resonate based only on character portrayal and the strength of the actors has blown me away. "Remember Me" as someone here already said is a "jewel" that will be remembered and celebrated for some time.

I've seen RM three times this weekend and have other comments in the other spoilers---first timers should take a look at all those posts there too! Great stuff, reading everyone's first impressions.

@Wen, so sorry your husband lost a friend in 9/11---and hugs to his strength in him sharing information to young folks at a theater.

@RPAddict, ITA, tasteful & respectful. Absolutely agree!

@Laurie, also agree with RM standing the test of time. This movie is 100% relevant and re-watchable. It will STILL be relevant in a year, five years and in ten.

This movie captures timeless themes of both love and loss. Rob is right---this movie HAD to be made. He deserves accolades for that.

I went yesterday afternoon, but the ensuing nor'easter and power outtage at my home prevented me from commenting LOL Yeah, 60mph winds down'd a tree and power line up the road from us last night. They were just coming to remove the tree when I was leaving this afternoon. I'm posting from the local Marriott, where I'll be spending the night because, well, I have to go to work in the morning and I have to like, shower, hair, press etc...

Anyway, on to Remember Me...

I am so glad I knew the ending, because, even though I knew it, when that camera pulled away from Rob looking out the window, and the building became visible, the tears just poured down my face. I wasn't the only one. I dragged my mother to the movie, and even she started to cry.

I dunno why. Maybe it's because I'm a NYer, and while we have healed, once a year that wound opens wide again for us. Seeing it, and knowing the randomness of everything that day, how people who should have been there weren't because of a quick decision, and people who shouldn't have been there were because of a detour, I think this movie illustrated that to perfection. I

didn't view it as a gratuitous or manipulative ending. It was nothing but a turn of faith, and I think with the level of redemption he reached, watching that screen saver on his father's computer, he was at piece with his Michael.

I think there was a good bit of foreshadowing leading up to the ending. The towers looming behind the subway platform in the opening scene, reference to the growth of terrorism, and the whole Yankee conversation kind of hinted what was to come.

Overall, I thought it was a decent movie. Good to see Rob break out. Good to see Rob break down and show emotion like he did. Good to see even Pierce Brosnan has gained a little weight with age ;)

I think Rob had amazing chemistry with Emilie. And little Ruby was amazing. I really wanted to hurt that snotty little girl who did that to her.

Our audio cut out right at the end, as the mother came out of the house and turned to look. I may go see it again if I get the chance, otherwise I'll have to wait for the dvd.

And speaking of dvd's, while I was offline, Target shipped my New Moon dvd :D

@Karen, you're fine---this is a spoiler thread! Not sure what Jane meant?

See RPG's comments for Tyler's motives. Basically, Aidan dared Tyler to go after Ally to get back at her dad for arresting them. One of those awful "guy moves"---cop screws with them, so they want to screw him back---almost literally, buy screwing his daughter. Yeah. He only hits on her because of that---not something easy to confess.

(Still, as much as I despise the behavior, it says a lot for Rob & Tate and the script, that I still LOVED both Tyler & Aidan anyway! Pricks, yes, but highly lovable ones.)

I just saw the movie. Honestly, I wasn't sure what I was expecting. I knew I was going to see it because of Rob, but my expectations weren't all that high. Let me tell you, I walked out of the theater with my mouth hanging open. I am so glad I didn't read any spoilers but boy was I tempted. I knew something to do with 9/11 would happen since the movie took place in 2001, good ole George W. was heard giving a speech, and the professor talked about terrorist attacks. When Tyler was going up higher and higher in the building, I finally connected the pieces and knew what was going to happen to Tyler. But I didn't start crying really until they showed Caroline (Ruby Jerins) looking for Tyler outside of the school.
Speaking of Caroline, I loved the relationship between her and Tyler. It was beautiful and you could feel just how much Tyler loved his sister :)
All of the characters were amazing. The acting was well done. The music and score were what really did it for me. In teh end scenes, the song that is playing completely added to the experience.
I hope this movie does well. I suppose it's all word of mouth at this point. PLease recommend it to people; I know I am and will!

@Wen,
ITA!! I can’t even remember when it was the last time that I saw such a realistic movie. 9/11 did happen but that’s not the only thing that makes it real. As you said the movie is based on the characters. Every thing that happened to the characters (including their feelings) happens in RL all the time. And at the end some people die, others are not happy, but everyone must find the strength to move on.

While I was waiting for RM to start I saw about 5 trailers of other movies (unfortunately Eclipse was not included) and they were all about special effects, mythical creatures etc.. I think most of the people are too tired of RL so they want to forget their problems for a couple of hours and they prefer a fictional movie. While watching them I wondered if there will be any other movie that I’ll be interested to watch until June 30th; at least as much as I wanted to see RM. I highly doubt it.

I agree, as someone said here RM is a “jewel”. I’m sure in some years from now it will be one of those movies that when you say you haven’t seen it people look at you in wonder/surprise and tell you ‘you can’t be serious, you HAVE to see this movie’!

I’m so proud for everyone who helped/participated at the creation of this jewel; from Rob to the less important crew member!

Brilliant movie. I dragged my sister to the theater the 2nd time I saw it. She is neither a Rob nor Twilight fan. (I know... How are we genetically related?). She and I cried at the end. With each heart break on screen, our hearts wrenched. By the end... our hearts burst and tears flowed.

I agree with many of you in how 9/11 was handled in the movie. It was done PERFECTLY. No unneeded footage. The INDIVIDUAL stories sucked you in so you really cared and understood each of the characters. The movie showed us each of their LIFE CHANGING MOMENTS. It allowed us to understand them and hold them in our hearts for a moment, like a close friend or relative. So at the end when 9/11 happens, YOU FEEL THEIR LOSS. It allowed me to "FEEL" the kind of loss people had experienced during that time. *My heart goes out to them.

I believe this movie is SIGNIFICANT! Younger generations have only read about 9/11. @ Wen and @nellieduff... What wonderful stories of sharing and helping younger generations understand. *sigh

I have a newfound respect for Robert Pattinson for making this movie. I'm in awe.

Lexi, RPattz, @RP-Great comments. I agree in some way or abother with everyone. RM was a tremendous movie, and a triumph for Rob whether it has a blowout opening weekend or not. 4th place is respectable. To be int e top 5 on opening weekend is no failure. Especially as it has been pointed out, this movie was made for less than $17 mill. That said, I saw it twice, Fri. night with my hubby and Sat. with my 84 year old grandma-and they both liked it. The theater was half or more full both times. Mostly women, but who cares?!? To do what it did competing against Johnny and Tim Burton's Alice, plus the new Matt Damon flick, I thought that was great! And after all, this film has all the makings of a sleeper hit. It is going to get even more word of mouth and buzz after this weekend, so all is def not lost. Let's look at it in context-over the next couple of weekends how it does. It could gain some momentum. Have faith ladies! ;) Rob has BA coming out, and it has real potential. Plus UC's and Water for Elephants-his career is just getting started! Oh, and Lexi, love the Daniel Day Lewis comment. So true! As for RM, I thought Rob and everyone else in it were great, and all acted their butts off. ;) Well done! Ruby was a scene stealer, and the scenes with her and Rob were incredible-so touching. Emily was terrific, and Chris Cooper and Pierce were AMAZING. They bring class and credibility to everything they do. The scene that got me-Rob and Pierce in the boardroom. GAH! Classic scene from a movie in the making. And of course, the ending-I knew it was coming, but I still was stunned and awestruck by it. You could hear a pin drop. Everyone was gasping under their breath and blown away. The way it was filmed, and done, amazing. Allen did a brilliant and poignant job in how he did it. It got the point without seeing the actual event. Unforgettable. And to those a-holes who say it was a gratuitous thing, they can think again! It was a beautiful and thoughtful film. Not enough of those, I say. In this movie age of blockbusters and epic adventures, a real, relevant, and heartfelt film like this is sorely needed. Thank you Rob darling, and Allen, and all the cast-you made not just a movie, you gave us a gift. Brava!

I saw the movie yesterday and i can't get it out of my mind.It was a very strong and meaningful story with very good actors.
Rob was breathtaking! You can't take your eyes off him,not just because he is so gorgeous, but because every move, every expression, every word he says is full of meaning for his character. You really get to know Tyler and feel his anger, his love, his tenderness, his everything...He was amazing and now i'm even more ROBsessed, if that's possible! This wonderful man is here to stay!!!!!!!!!
In the end Everyone at the theatre was silent here (Greece) too and we stayed at our seats as well for a while with tears in our eyes...I still have the same feeling and i don't think i'll ever forget this movie ,or Rob's performance...
I definitely want to see again and again! I'm also proud of Rob and i'm looking forward to everything he has to offer us, which i'm sure is huge.

Nellieduff, I so totally agree with you and have been thinking the same thing since I saw the movie. I understand I didn't have a friend or relative lost in the 9/11 attacks, but I sat glued to the t.v. all day from the the second the first plane hit until I went to bed that evening. I could hardly sleep from worry and I grieved with every one else during that time. It did happen and why pretend it didn't. I don't shy away from seeing the hundreds of movies with car accidents, suicides, cancer etc, even though I've lost family and friends to those events. They don't leave them out of movies because people have lost a loved one to those events. It happened and it was horrible, and I still grieve with those who tragically lost a loved one that day. I thought the critics got it wrong on that subject as well. I don't normally pay attention to movie critics anyway. After all, they are just another person with another opinion. I form my own and I still love this movie and can't wait to see it again!

ShariG, I'm in my mid-30s and feel the same way about this movie and Rob P. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this movie, but I came out of it feeling proud of him for his performance. I knew he would be great and he didn't disappoint! I have told everyone this is a movie worth seeing!

It was just weird that two chicks near me didn't understand the last part, when Tyler was at his dad's office... and when after blackout, all those people looking to the sky ...

It was weird because I'm 45 years old, that chicks around 16 maybe, and they should know about that specific 9/11 day!!! they just talking '' oh my god, he jumped from that building''...

I almost told them what happenned , but WTF!.. let them find by theirselves...

That day was really sad...

This was a beautiful, brilliant and breathtaking movie. I hadn't read any spoilers, but I suspected from the beginning of the movie that 9/11 would come into play. In the opening scene on the subway platform in Brooklyn you can see World Trade One and Two in the background. Seeing the towers always puts a lump in my throat. I lived in NYC in my early twenties and worked inside the north tower from 1997-2000.

The tragic subway scene took place in 1991, and the next scene was "Ten Years Later" so we knew throughout the movie it was taking place in NYC in the summer of 2001. When they went to the beach house for Labor Day Weekend I was thinking, oh no, it's the first week of Sept 2001 -- Tyler, Alley and Aidan are going to be in Tyler's apartment in lower Manhattan on 9/11. At that point I suspected his Dad's office was in the WTC and I was thinking his Dad might die. I didn't think it was going to be Tyler. I started crying before the chalk board scene, when Tyler arrived at his Dad's office and said he'd wait there for him while he took Ruby to school. I knew then. I cried harder when they panned out from Tyler looking out the window, and you could see that Tyler was in the north tower and appeared to be above the 90th floor. Those of us with intimate knowledge of that day know that the north tower was the first to be struck and no one above the 90th floor survived.

I don't understand the critics who think this movie "exploits" the 9/11 tragedy. I knew people who died that day. I think we dishonor them by trying to forget what happened to them. The Hawkins are a fictional family, but they are like so many families who lost loved ones that day. Just ordinary people who were coping with the sadnesses of life and relishing the joys of life, and loving each other. This movie was a startling reminder to all of us that every time you are with someone you love you must cherish that time together because it could be the last time you ever see them.

You didn't hear movie critics saying that "Titanic" was exploitative, and yet that too was about fictional characters who experienced what was a real-life tragedy in which thousands of people lost their lives.

I thought this movie was excellent in its entirety. Rob's performance was magnificent. I forgot during the movie that I am obsessed with Rob Pattinson the actor. I was completely absorbed in his character and I alternately felt sorry for Tyler, then I was annoyed by his behavior, then I was happy for him, then I was angry at him, and then I was proud of him. I felt all the emotions you'd feel toward a real person you cared about. To me that is a mark of a very good actor -- one who can embody a character and make you feel all of those emotions for the character. I hope Rob will continue to choose meaningful roles like this.

One last comment -- I was so impressed that the love scene between Tyler and Alley managed to be tender and beautiful while also being steamy and sexy. I'll admit that I can't wait for the DVD so I can slo-mo that scene!

Gwen Cooper 426 said...

Some of the comments here, like ShariG's, made me think that RM would make a great educational tool IN class, a movie to inspire discussion.

I think showing this movie at a high school or college level, in sociology classes would be an excellent way to educate those who were very young during 9/11. There's so much: Interpersonal relationships, suicide, grief, guilt, etc. Not to mention the discussions on terrorism and the political and emotional fall-out, even a decade later...

I laughed, I cried, I loved it!
Seriously amazing, touching story.
I plan to see it again. I highly recommend the movie soundtrack, I cant stop listening to it.
It was great seeing a different side of Rob, def the king of sexy brooding.
Peirce kinda made me laugh, Ruby was just too cute. I cried at the screensaver part and the end of course, maybe a lil in between too lol.
My theatre was about half full, this guy in the back said 'wtf?' when the screen went black after the implied 9/11 incident, im like did you not catch the date on the chalkboard, its not that confusing.
MAJOR SEX HAIR ACTION, DOMINANT ROB IS DELICIOUS.
His friend cracked me up, haha 1 night stand kit. Yummy shower scene was yummy.
Ugh and the outfits Rob wore were mighty fine, bless the costume design person. Who knew Rob had such a delicious back with such delicious freckles lol.
Anyway, its a must see, makes you appreciate life. If you had family that died in 9/11 then i would say skip it, but yeah its a great film.
On that note, Im off to stare at some sexy alive and well, rich and famous awesome pics of ROB!
I cant really rate it but id say at least 8/10 forshizzle.
If Rob wasnt in it tho, i prolly woulda skipped it LOL.
I LOVE THIS QUOTE:

My older daughter 20 years old told me that if there had been a plane coming or a quote about it she would have screamed in the theater. The end was so respectful and yet so strong.

I saw RM for the second time this weekend. I know how you feel, @valfa89. I used this word in a post earlier, haunted. That describes the feeling. I saw it yesterday for the first time and it stayed with me all evening. I had to put on Enya's song Time. It took me back to that time, the shock, devastation and unbelievablity and helplessness. I can't seem to escape that last shot of Rob at the window. It just was so poignant.
I have such a need to just talk about all of this.
I have been telling anyone who will listen or read my text that this movie is a 'must see'.
Rob was incredible. I saw so much more in his performance the second time around. All the subtle nuances. The relationship between Tyler and Caroline was so touching and so real. Ruby was amazing. The chemistry between Rob and Emilie - wonderful. The scene when he returns from the confrontation with Pierce in the boardroom. You could feel Tyler's desperation and Allie's wanting to comfort him.
Yes, it brings back all the where were you when. . . It was just so moving.
A toast to you, Rob, on a job well done. Yes, I will go see it again.

Can anyone give me the quote about the fingerprints never fading?

@nellieduff, tears in my eyes. I don't know how I would even start to explain the horror and impact of 9/11 to a young person, but so important for them to know. The fact that this little film opened that conversation with your daughter touches my heart. For all those critics who panned RM for exploiting the event, take a lesson here. Read these comments! I knew 9/11 was a part of the movie, unfortunately. As the ending unfolded, I looked for the date to be revealed somewhere. Both my friend and I couldn't breath, she said her chest hurt. I was anxious on how much would they show. Could I relive those images again? I dreaded it. But they did it well with sensitivity. Tyler's dying in it was a surprise.

I came away from RM, shell-shocked, my friend hated it because she doesn't like sad endings. I will see it again, and again, for Rob's brilliant performance and for the many moments in it that make up the whole.

@dina,
I went to Faliro! Oh I know exactly how you feel! When the movie finished, it took me about 3 minutes to manage to stand up and leave the cinema. I have never cried that much and that hard while watching a movie. Actually I can't remember crying like this many times in RL. I started crying when Tyler woke up that morning and I couldn't stop even after the end of the movie. When he told Ally that he loves her, when she asked him about what he prefers for breakfast when he was supposed to be back and when I saw the date written I cried really loud and the girl who was sitting in front of me turned back and looked at me in suprise.

When Ally said 'good' I stopped breathing until she said that she loves him too because that was their first and last chance to say it to each other.

Most of the people didn't cry but they were all in shock. There was a guy sitting behing me and when he saw the date he gasped 'the towers'. I looked at him before leaving and he could barely move from his seat.

One of my friends has never cried while watching a movie; ever. Not even while watching movies like titanic or the notebook. When she saw the window scene she started crying like a baby. On our way back she said 'now THIS is a movie. and it worths much more than 10 euros to watch it'. Today she texted me and she said 'i just woke up and the first thing that came to my mind is Tyler behind the window. It will take about a week to recover'.
No one can stay unaffected!

Twilight-diehards will not see this movie simply because they will not stand seeing Edward "sleeps" with anyone else before "sleeping with Bella".
I was in theater when two teenagers started saying "oh no, oh no" and covered their eyes and ears during the bed scenes between Robert Pattinson and Emile Ravin.
Robert Pattinson is his own man--he will do movies with senseless plot even if the movie bombs in box office.
Personally, I want him to move on. Too bad there is still the Eclipse, then Breaking dawn. After Remember Me, I don't think I can watch him in Twilight Saga anymore. New Moon was a stretch for me . . . but will buy DVD of course for RP movies collection. Will wait for his better movies Bel Ami, Water for Elephants and hopefully Unbound Captives. In Remember Me, I can really really see him in future films with this quality of performance and script.
In my opinion, he has grown up in two years, but others are way too immature to follow yet...he grew up too fast for some.

The window scene seems to be the spot that got to everyone. I too have been thinking about it all day, and even found myself tearing up a few times.

I don't think I was crying for Tyler so much as I was crying for what I knew was coming. I knew, and he didn't...and there was no way to warn him.

And what happens to those left behind? We all know this story so well by now. Those little twists of fate...his father should have been in the building, but wasn't. The secretary went out for coffee...but got back a few minutes too soon.

I don't think it exploited the events of that day at all. I think it was used as a metaphor. We never know what's lurking around the bend. Best to seize the moment, because we don't ever realize how precious and few those moments might be.

Teri, Nellie, AP: Yes, I'm gratified the film is opening discussions. That's fantastic.

Wen: Interesting story.

Everyone:
I haven't commented here for long so I don't know Robsessed's history but perhaps one of the regulars from back in the day could tell me this. Have there ever been so many long comments by so many people on any other topic mentioned on this blog before?

Oh I know there have been lots of comments--eg. when the Details shoot came out--but have there ever been so many long, thoughtful comments as on these threads having to do with RM?

Because I think this 'dialogue' is go great, and I think we all benefit by learning from each other. I'm so enjoying hearing how profoundly this movie moved so many of you.

I think--stupidly pretending I'm Rob again,-forgive me big guy--that Rob would be really moved that so many of us have been affected deeply by it. If I were making a movie this is exactly what I would want.
I hope my book affects people deeply someday too.

Tyler's dad's behaviour: Well, presumably Tyler taught his dad something before he died; maybe Tyler's message, his ranting, sunk in. Maybe it is one of those things which he was supposed to do with his life.
If Charles ignored Tyler's message after Tyler's death it would insult his memory. That's how I see it.

Many of us use words like tasteful, eloquent, touching. Some critics disparagingly use words like maudlin and melodramatic.
I'm sure they are not really looking, hearing, feeling. They can't be.

I truly think this is an Oscar-worthy movie (didn't the first time I saw it but do now). Truly. But I think critics have so many agendas they are determined to diss it.

Some of you have said you've had trouble sleeping after viewing it. Yeah, I've been blogging and otherwise can not get it out of my head. Bed at 6 a.m. Friday 'night' and 4 a.m. Sat. Now, Sun., all I can think of is seeing it again.
Anyone else that affected??

I haven't seen RM yet but just reading all your comments and sharing your emotions, I feel as if I had already seen it too. I'm terrified of the window scene - I've just found out that I have that particular picture of Tyler standing at the window of his dad's office and now I cannot look at it without thinking of what comes after. I keep thinking : he's going to die, this is the last time he's seen alive in the movie - it is as if I had really seen the scene and this picture now stays with me all the time! Nothing like this has ever happened to me and I've never waited for a movie like that. So thank you all for sharing, it's so wonderful.

Vafla: I hadn't read your comment when I made mine about not being able to sleep. I know exactly what you mean. Can't get it out of my head.

Keeping up with the comments is a big job, but an enjoyable one. Glad it's the weekend.

@Peychi I just cried reading your comment. I had no family in the WTC on 9/11 but even living in Florida I had worked virtually with some people in the towers. I never knew the outcome, were those people in the buildings that day or had they arrived to work yet. Everytime I look at a clock and see 9:11 I think of that day and remember our nation and have silent word of prayer. I am glad your circumstances led you to not be there.

@ jessegirl i'm the same way ever since I saw the movie on friday its been in my head.

I thought the movie was really good. Throughout the movie you grow to love the characters and the emotions at the end were overwhelmingly real. When 9/11 happened i was in 2nd or 3rd grade so it didn't really effect me then and now it does somewhat.

But the emotions at the end reminded me of when my dad got a call saying my uncle was shot in the head.(He was a police officer)
The same emotions that went through me then went through me when i saw the movie. The extreme saddness, helplessness, and the Oh My God what just happened.

@winters_eclipse I know what you mean! I had that feeling when my parents got a call saying my grandfather had passed.

I am a 40 something fan of Rob. I found him extremely watchable in the Twilight movies (he has that something on film) but I was really excited to see what he could do with Remember Me. I had read the script beforehand.

Let me just say - he exceeded my expectations. Rob definitely has that movie star charisma, but in Remember Me he is an actor. I loved getting to know Tyler, watching him let his guard down and letting Ally in, his loving relationship with his little sister, his genuine tenderness with his wounded mother, his bond with Aiden and his struggle with his grief and his father.

I loved both the Dads - Pierce in the boardroom fight was amazing. "Do you think you feel anything in your heart that I don't feel in mine?" Gah - weeping. Chris when he looks at his wife's body - the pain in his eyes.

Emilie was great as Ally - I had only seen her in Lost so it was fantastic to see her in something meatier. She was totally believable, had great chemistry with Rob and has the most beautiful eyes!

Ruby was perfect as Caroline and I would love to have seen more of Lena Olin. The last shot of her as she is talking to someone and you can just see the grief passing through her eyes. Again, - weeping.

I thought some of the scenes were cut a little too soon, which gave them a bit of a choppy feel, but I think Allen Coulter brought these people to life. I gasped when Caroline turned around on the phone to reveal her hair, I inwardly cheered when Tyler flipped out in her classroom, I felt Ally's betrayal when she found out the relationship she finally allowed herself to have was based on a lie. I had a huge grin on my face when Tyler and Ally were light together and when Caroline smiled up at her big brother.

So, yes, I wept like a baby at the ending. Just as Tyler was getting his bearings, finding first love, letting go of old pains, forgiving ... gone in an instant. It was extremely powerful. I thought it was tastefully done and I believe Tyler's story could have been the story of any of those people that perished that day.

I will be seeing this movie again ... and again.

Thanks for reading :)

I am so glad to hear that I am not the only one who is still replaying this movie in my mind. My husband actually liked it a lot but he slept like a baby and has not been thinking of it as I have.

Rob you did an amazing job!

It will be with me for a very long time.

Keils said...

I just wanted to say that everyone's comments have been so thoughtful and I'm glad other people care about this movie as much as I do.

I thought this movie was incredible! All of the characters played their parts so beautifully and even being a twilight and kristen stewart fan I really believed Rob and Emilie's chemistry. They just had something so different than the Edward/Bella love story that was real and passionate.
I don't know how this is possible but Rob became even more attractive in this movie! I think it was his normal clothes and non white makeup but it was also his intensity, the way he interacted with his sister and his undeniable sense of humor that is so absent in the twilight movies. Seeing him smoke was definitely a plus as well :)
As far as the ending 9/11 controversy goes, I thought they portrayed the event in a truly realistic way that had not been done before. Most of the movies that contain 9/11 were done so soon after that event that we were all numb to it still. They were so closely paralleled to the exact event that it was like a documentary. I feel like this is the first film to really integrate it into a story well, which by doing so made the event almost as shocking as when it actually happened. You really think about the lives of the families that lost someone that day, that it could happen to anyone.
I was only 12 when 9/11 happened but I still remember everything that happened that day, how confusing and scary it was and how significant it is to our history as a nation. The moment I saw the date on the chalkboard my heart sank but it was different from just being sad or upset. It was like I was punched in the gut, which I felt for hours afterward. I almost feel like they didn't need the shots after they panned out of tyler looking out the window, that shot was so powerful but I did like showing Aiden's Tyler tattoo and Ally on the subway.
Overall I was extremely impressed and can't wait to see it over and over again on dvd :)

Yes, Wen, we're not used to having a movie resonate with us, and we're not used to it.

Words to use: resonate, haunting, significant, moving, profound, thought-provoking, poignant, breathtaking, touching, gut-wrenching, brilliant.

Mitts: You have such a need to talk about this. I know, I think that's what many of us here also feel. I can't put my finger on why. It's not just 9/11, not just a brilliant film, not just Rob, but somehow the combination has galvanized us. I can't keep my mind on work, reading, TV, much of anything. I want to go again. Need.

GwenC: *waves*
Yes, I bet RM would make a great educational tool, in so many ways. No longer a teen, it hadn't occurred to me that younger people wouldn't know about 9/11. That fact took me aback.
I went to my shelf and got out the Time mag. and the specials which came out just after the attacks,-like a moth to a flame. Tyler at the window, Tyler at the window...cannot stop. Can't breathe.

lallieb: Yes, shell-shocked. Unlike so many here, I could not cry. I could not breathe. I thought I was having a heart attack, and now feel shell-shocked. But I could not cry. 24 hrs. later and I still can't breathe.

Peychi: Thanks for all the thoughtful comments on 0/11. You worked in the north tower until the year 2000? Fate?

dina: thanks for the info. on previous posts. It's a happy place.

I saw two movies yesterday - RM and Brooklyn's Finest and at the end of RM the lights were still off while the credits rolled slowly and most of the people just sat there.........but after BF the lights came up immediately when the credits began and everyone got up and left and it had a pretty tough ending too. I thought that was interesting.

Did ya'll notice if that happened in your theater? did they keep the lights off at the end when the credits rolled?

I'm going again tomorrow. Can't wait to see Rob - I love that we have so many ways to see him now with NM DVD and RM and Eclipse soon and Bel Ami etc etc.......he has a lot going on.

I am in my 40s, obsessed with Robert Pattinson, never felt so invested to any actors including my still beloved Pierce Brosnan. so you see, i jusy had to see RM, my husband and my older daughter know my obsession with Rob and my affection to Pierce, they went with me to see the movie Friday, my daughter and I came out of the theater with red, puffy eyes...She is not a fan of Twilight, much more craze about Harry Potter, but she just loves RM and has been texting her friends urging them to go see the movie.
I was living in Manhattan during the attack, i would never forget what I saw on 9/11, and the smell and dust the days after when the wind changed direction, and feeling safe and proud when seeing F16 fly so low in the air above Manhattan........ i love the way the movie uses 9/11, not too much or too short, just enough to let us remember, not that we forgot any of it.....
It is truly a great movie, not just because Rob and Pierce were in it and played their best.
I am so glad I have found this site to "listen" and now share ......

Yeah, I remember the girl flipping Rob off. You wanted to see his smirk while he was bogarting that ciggie, didn't you? ;)) Me too! Wonder if it'll be on the DVD. Now I'm thinking of possible DVD clips.

Also, remember the beige long-sleeved shirt (sleeves rolled-up) and jeans and him running to catch up with her? Where's that scene? We didn't see the wonky run. I would pout and say I feel cheated but in a serious thread like this it's almost sacrilege.

We did get a lot of Sexy though, didn't we? Man he was so effing gorgeous I was quietly hyperventilating. That, combined with the powerful story, riveted me. (Remember when he says 'riveted'. Gahh! Perfect. Love angry Tyler.)

You and I must have so many possible screen moments in our heads--am I right?-- from the pap filled summer of '09 when we knew every day which clothes Rob was wearing. I have a whole RM binder and e-folder with almost 900 photos. Now I can hardly wait for HQ screencaps.

Funny to see those photos now, to realize which shirt he wore for each scene. It seems more significant now, in an odd way. I heard--here I believe--some of those clothes will be auctioned off. Gahh! I want the white tee with the sun on it and the navy hoodee he wears over that.

Well, enough of this merriment.

Rob, yeah you nailed Tyler.
Your acting was amazing.
Your producership (?) was brave and so necessary.
But man, you were still our HAWT Rob. Don't try to deny it.

Sorry, everyone, blame it on fem. She got me going.

Hi all,

I have this thing, there's this poem I love that I try to have everyone read....so here it is, just seems appropriate :)

Max Ehrmann

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

I am reading some of the comments, but have not read all yet. Just want to respond to a few. This movie cost only 16 million to make and it has in one weekend taken in more than half that amount. It was a limited release, small budget film and it has done very well. If it makes 10 million by the end of the weekend it should be considered a great success. The fact is more than Rob fans have to go see the movie. It has to get more good reviews to bring people in. The average critics grade is C for the film and A- from regular people who saw it. That says to me the critics are having a large effect on movie goers who are not Rob fans to start with. If you saw it you liked it, but if you let the critics influence you, you may not have seen it.

I also want to comment on the 9 11 ending. I agree with some other posters who have said that 9 11 was handled very, very well. There were not gratuitous photographs of people jumping from windows or the buidings crashing down. It was a beautiful tribute to the people who died. For me the title referred not only to Tyler Hawkins. It was saying Remember Me on behalf of all of the brothers, sons, lovers, and friends who parished. It was saying don't forget us. We lived. We had families and people for whom we meant something. By giving us Tyler Hawkins, the movie allowed each of us to care about him and in a heartbeat lose him. It was supposed to be jarring and shocking. The event was jarring and shocking.

I am so proud of this film and so proud of Rob in it. For the whole thing to work you had to love Tyler. You had to watch as he was beginning to forgive and get past his demons and you had to grieve with his family, Ally, and Aidan. He became our loss just as he was theirs. That was the point. Robert did a magnificent job, as always, of drawing us in and making us love him.

HeartThePretty_EvenMore said...

Thanks @rpattzgirl. I so look forward to further insights.

ShariG,
You are spot on. It is for us to remember those who were taken so abruptly and without reason. To open the discussion, which judging from this post has succeeded.

Well said ShariG...
At the end when you're hearing Tylers last entry into his journal when he tells Michael he forgives him...that moment was huge...

Aidens tattoo of Tyler's name on his arm...

Ally riding the subway at the end, and Charles being with Carolyn, all tributes to Tyler and showing Tylers fingerprints did not fade from their lives, even though he was gone...

POWERFUL is an understatement.

@Nicole, random thoughts here, but thinking that possibly Ally felt like it would probably piss her dad off more to stay with said 'random guy she just met' AND it fits with her 'dessert first' mentality. Why wait?

Tyler, on the other hand, has inside info on her dad being a dick---so, yes, entirely plausible that he & Aidan would let Ally stay there, especially after her dad hit her. (Agree that they'd not likely do that for just any girl.)

Shari G - while I haven't seen RM since in Jakarta , RM isn't release eventhough at RM website saya it says March 12. I call the distributor office, they say that it will be release soon, I am glad its not competing head to head with Alice, Green Zone.
So I say smart move by the distributor and last Sunday they alrdy put out RM film ad on national newspaper.

I have and will keep promoting RM it to my friends and family via facebook and sms. And personally listed 10 people in my family to see it on opening night. I proclaim myself as the local RM promoter,we shall be contributing to the international sales

Pls keep promoting RM to your co-workers, friends/family while its in theater and make it last in the top 10 as long as possible beacause it is a damn good movie and worth recommending.....

Lets focus on the positive reviews like Time, Newsweek (reputable magazines) that recommend this movie,,,,,,and ignore the negative

Tyler Perry of Madee fame said he never read critics reviews because he made his movies for the people not the critics.....

Hi. I'm one of the silent Robsessors around this wonderful blog. I feel the need to comment right now or I'll die.

I'm from Manila and only a number of cinemas (Ayala Cinemas) are screening RM right now. I went today for the 12:50 p.m. sched and surprisingly, the theatre was half-full. It's a monday here and I honestly didn't expect anyone to see a dramatic film during their lunch hour :)

Ok, I really hope the cast and crew of RM could find their way here to read the heart-warming and heart-wrenching comments made. Making this film was truly a risk and I'm profoundly proud that they did it tastefully.

I managed to hold myself together when I was watching but just when I started reading everyone's comments, the dam just broke. "Powerful is understatement". WORD. It made me more grateful that I have a wonderful family and I grew up without dealing with bullies. For me, it's all about loving your own and let them know how much. Spend time and connect with your kids; bullies were probably never shown love by their parents.

To Robert Pattinson, I never thought I could love you more, but I do. You are brave and "riveting". As a fan, and simply as a human being, I am so proud of you.

As I can't see the film till April I decided to listen to the RM music score by Marcelo Zarvos. Someone told me it was beautiful and that it gave a good idea of the atmosphere of the film. Well I'm completely bawling my eyes out now, what a tender, beautiful, heart-rending music. It conveys a terrible sadness and a sense of impending tragedy, which I would have felt even if I had not known beforehand that it was the original RM score. This movie is going to be the end of me when I finally see it.

I thought the movie was good. Not great, but good. Rob's performance was great - I was glad to see him excel at a non-Twilight role (though, his work in Little Ashes has been my favorite thus far).

I had accidentally read a comment on a blog before I went to the movie, so I vaguely knew what would happen. I thought the ending was handled fine with the script, etc. BUT, I think the marketing of this movie was a little off because I did not hear mention of 9/11 in any of Rob's major interviews. The Entertainment Weekly and People Magazine reviews don't mention 9/11. And for a lot of people, that is something they should know before venturing to the theatre and buying tickets for a "romantic/family drama". That event is still fresh in the minds of MANY people 9 years later and to not have an inkling that that is coming is disturbing to some.

Just my opinion, obviously.

@WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone,
I feel sad and angry at the same time after reading the latest link. Some of the reviews were really harsh and mean. I think the people who wrote them are a bit biased. Or they just wanted to write something bad about the movie and that was the best part to choose.

9/11 did happen, we can't pretend it didn't. Some of these writers make it sound like it's a kind of disrepect to talk about it. IMO forgetting about it is disrespect.

I'm not american and this movie made me feel all the horror and the pain of that day. I remember what I was doing that day in every single detail. I couldn't understand that much back then (I was 11) but now I can absolutely understand everything. All the pics and the vids I have seen about 9/11 have a whole different meaning now.

Avoiding talking about it is like lieing (did I spell that right?!) to ourselves.

ITA about how wonderful it is how RM keeps us all talking, exchanging and reacting! It's really nice to see the point of view of so many people who are from different countries and who have different experiences!

I absolutelly love ROBsessed!!!

I by myself this afternoon to see it, I LOVED it. It is a small movie, it is a slow moving character driven piece, it's NOT a shoot-em-up, vampire blockbuster and I think that that's where the "disappointing" sales are coming in. Although I read somewhere it really isn't disappointing because for any other actor in this vehicle the move would have made around 1.5mil.

Rob has carried it, let him get Bel Ami and Water for Elephants under his belt to show those people turned off by the Twilight machine how great he is and soon he will be top of the box office every time.

Ok, now onto the movie. The parts were so well acted other than Rob my fave being Caroline and Aiden. I definitely plan to go back and see it.

My fave parts are Aiden pushing him off the ladder at the bookstore then Tyler saying "WHAT?" when they are shushed.
Pierce Brosnon in the boardroom argument yelling at the employees to "Sit the *&^& down" and letting the Brooklyn accent come out to play.
Tyler saying "abso-freaking-lutely" when asked about the art show.

While the ending tore me up, the part I started tearing up at is when Pierce is staring at the towers with tears in his eyes in disbelief just knowing Tyler was there.

Could write more but have to process the movie.

WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone said...

@vafla89
Yes, the reviews excerpts in this second article are harsh, it seems many reviewers hated the ending and are now accusing the movie of exploiting 9/11. What is really interesting is that most viewers seem to be reacting quite the opposite way... and not finding the ending offensive. At the end of day, I believe it is our opinion which matters and not what the critics say. So don't be sad! :)) And remember (yes, yes I know.. the "remember" word) Rob said we had to "watch the movie with an open mind", I think that's what really counts.

vafla89 said...

@WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone,
I almost always disagree with most of the reviewers so when I read a really good review I know the movie will probably turn out to be one of the supposed to be 'well-written, intellectual etc' movies!

Some times it's better to deal with what causes you pain, it's like a way to overpass it. IMO that's one of the reasons that most of the viewers like the ending. When I saw RM I cried a lot and realy hard but at the end it felt kinda good! I don't now how to describe it, it's like taking the pain off of you somehow!

Wendy said...

Christine, those were some of my most favorite parts of the movie, too!

Re the link to the review. I am confused as to why they say the film doesn't tell you the movie was taking place in the summer of 2001. I mean, if you were paying attention, after Ally's mother is murdered (which the film mentioned was 1991), they tell you it's ten years later. The weather is obviously beautiful in NY, so it's def. not fall or winter. Also, when Caroline is walking on the park bench, she asks Tyler if his school is done. The family then go on to go away for Labor Day, etc. I, personally, had no trouble knowing what time of the year it was. Maybe that's just me. Beyond that, one of the best written reviews I've seen thus far. I also feel some of the negative reviews didn't give the film much of a chance to begin with. I stand by my opinion as it being one of the best movies I've seen. Wasn't "Never Forget" one of the mottos (for lack of a better term) after Sept. 11? I still feel the movie helps us to "Never Forget".

Vafla, I know the exact feeling your talking about! I have felt that way since I saw the movie last Friday! I wasn't up nearly as long as you, lol, but I laid awake for quite some time. I have thought about RM every day since I saw it and so want to go see it again this week!

TwiCouger, your comment about you and your sister made me giggle! My sister is not a Twilight fan, either. She hasn't read a book or seen a movie and I've told her to a billion times. I have no idea how we are related! lol

I took Ally being on the subway as overcoming her fear, and not allowing it to rule her life anymore. I figured it was something she got out of her bond and relationship with Tyler. I'm sure there's something more profound about it but I'm not usually that perceptive! The above was just my own perception!

I'm so excited to go see it again, too, and can't wait to own it on dvd!!

Just saw the movie. I am not able to form words yet .... but ... WOW ... just wow.
I will return when I can do more than just sit and think of how much Rob affected me with only this performance alone.
I loved it so much.
