'Eclipse' Breaks Midnight Box Office Records

Summit's "Eclipse" scored massive figures Tuesday night, with more than $30 million at some 4,000 engagements, enough to become the all-time highest-grossing pic for midnight runs.
The franchise's third outing, which surpassed "Twilight" predecessor "New Moon" ($26.3 million) for the late-night crown, will expand to 4,416 U.S. locations today. Large-screen exhib Imax posted north of $1 million from 192 engagements, a record-setting take for the company.

Some 12 territories, including Brazil and Mexico, also screened "Eclipse" during midnight showings. Most markets will continue the film's international rollout today, (Kate: :-( Not Here) with additional bows July 1. Pic will launch day-and-date in 42 overseas markets.

Pic's midnight take reps a sizeable start Stateside over the Fourth of July weekend as its core aud of young femmes mostly are on summer vacation. "Eclipse" will go against the frame's other wide release Paramount's "The Last Airbender," which is expected to best serve males aged 25 and under.

It's no suprise to me that Ecplise is breaking records. Twilight was magical, New Moon was heartbreaking but Eclipse is awesome!!

I will never forget seeing it in LA with Angie K on my left and Modesty Patch on my right. All our reactions were priceless! It was an experience of a lifetime to share with all the LA NB's

BTW not to give anything away but I was in floods by the end of the gold bed scene!!

I see Eclipse again on Friday/Saturday and I cannot wait!!

Hi Dessert...

I'm still thinking about our time together and wish we could have had more. I'm gonna talk you into ROBstock III (Comic Con 2011) yet. Oh yes I will.

As for the B.O.

With these first night numbers, Eclipse should open bigger than New Moon's 140 million (and I've no doubt will exceed it in overall box office take). And I know that some insiders are looking at a close to 200 million opening, but...I think that's pretty optimistic.

They've still got Toy Story (the kid crowd) to deal with not to mention this Airbenders (under 25 male crowd) opening up and that's gonna eat away at Summit's box office. So I'm gonna say $ 160ish for the opening. But I'm a bit of a pessimist who hates to get her hopes up only to be disappointed.

I'd rather aim low and then hopefully be surprised.

I wanted Eclipse to go on an on. It was hard to actually get up and leave the theater although everyone clapped and cheered when the movie was over. Going to the matinee tomorrow. Just as anxious to see it again as I was at the midnight showing. Rob's face was breathtaking and hard to look at anyone else. God, what a man.

I'm seeing it again tonight.

did anyone really doubt that it wouldn't break some sort of record?

The movie was amazing! People were linning up on the first hour of showing. I woke up early just to get a heads upand people were already waiting even before the cinemas were open. Compliments to Rob and Kristen for such a great performance. Thanks to David Slade. Although there were some scenes that i was expecting to see, over all, it was awesome.
I'm watching it again over the weekend.

Go ECLIPSE! Go ROBSTEN!!!

Just a question: some people here, and elsewhere, claim that Rob, Kristen, and others of cast... are getting some kind of share on these ticket sales. I understood they were straight contract-negotiated salary... that is, one amount to them no matter how well the movie does, and even on the merchandise of Twilight...

That is a huge difference, millions, in fact. Anyone here have a comment based on facts?

(sorry to pull you all out of the Twilight haze,, just thought this might be the right thread for it.)

nikola6 said...

Belladonna...

Trust me. Rob and Kristen have back end deals that will bring them far more than their salaries.

Example. With the first Batman, Jack Nicholson didn't ask for a salary or a piece of the box office take. He simply asked for a cut of the merchandise. And he walked away from that film with 70 million dollars.

For actors now, the big money isn't in their salaries. It's in their backend deals; their piece of the box office, dvds and merchandising pies.

Trust me again. When these films are through, Rob and Kristen will be independently wealthy. They will NEVER have to work for an acting paycheck again.

They will be financially and artistically free.

There is no surprise that it is breaking records - we have all been dying to see this movie - been talking about it for months and months - I saw the trilogy last night - OMG I was in heaven. I kept tabs on my facebook - it was so cool being among all the diehard twi-hard fans like me :). I am so going to be seeing this all weekend - Already to go see it again tonight in IMAX, then watching it again Thursday. Finally ending the weekend with about 10 more times, lol. Rob and Kris were fantastic in this movie - more comfortable.
This was definitely the best of the three. The proposal/leg hitch scene was the best of course. But the meadow scene made me melt - yummy!

I couldn't believe it that even Lisa Schwarzbaum was praising Eclipse and she RIPPED New Moon up and was so rude. So that's a great sign.

Can't wait to see it - hope to go tomorrow.

ladies, what do you really think about eclipse, did you think bella showed edward enough love like the book or it seeed as though bella showed jacob more affection and also like bella was being force by edward into marrying him, which we all know that is not how the book was written, please can i want each one's opinion

MMc said...

WOW - just heard on TV that Sunday night Macy's 4th of July celebration will include Justin Bieber, Julio Iglesias, LeeAnn Rimes, and the cast of..........wait for it...........TWILIGHT!!

Sounds good.

Ana73 said...

femroc - will this be televised, never heard of this thing i thought macy's only did thankgiving parade.

evangeline - this isn't the spoiler thread, but i was happy with the whole thing edward/bella love relationship and bella/jacob friendship it was true to the book IMO.

Kerri said...

Im thrilled by this news. I was really concerned that it was gonna fizzle a tiny bit. I mean, it's been three movies. But this is not the case. Im so proud to be team Robward.

@Dessert First- Your killing me! I cant see the movie until friday. GAH! Im not one who cares about spoilers. I hate surprises. But now I cant wait for the bed scene!!!!

tgill said...

I know this is a bit OT but I really feel sorry for Chris Weitz it was quite obvious that he put his heart and soul into NM and the cast loved him, the critics however didn't and poured scorn on his efforts.
David Slade didn't seem to be as invested in the movie and was he anywhere around during the promotion and premiere?
The subtext from the cast is that it was not as pleasant an experience working with him, at least that is what some of the interviews with the holy trinity seem to say.
I haven't seen the movie yet in Ireland but I can't wait

Kerri said...

@femroc- Femroc say's what? Is their really a Macy's parade? Rob is in New York, so....

INFO, STAT!!!

Vangie said...

@ana73,i did want to know about the movie per-say,i just wanted your opinion it was just my sister and her both friends find bella was all over the place, there are not twi-hards however my sister likes rob so therefore she likes edward but she call bella a slut since new-moon and she find edward is to good, sad that i make you think i wanted to know about the move

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

Yes i believe David was very invested and had a lot to prove to the fans...and boy dud he ever.

He's been involoved in all the promos and walked the red carpet, I have his pic...he's just short & hard to see!

Kerri said...

femroc's right. I just scrolled through my DVR and the guide says that the Twilight saga actoprs will be in the parade. AWSOME! I can definitely see Peter doing that. Hope Rob will show.

lallieb said...

@Nik, please, please, have you and the other NBs given the lowdown of what happened out there, and if so, where? Sorry if I missed it, but you well know how hard it can be to keep up on this amazing blog. I really try to. I want to hear all about it. ?email. I know you're not on Twitter, nor am I, so where and when? THANKS.

lallieb said...

I'll bet my paycheck, my mortgage, and my soul, too, that Rob is not going to be in that parade. But I've been wrong before.

tgill said...

@rpg I like that "short and hard to see" he does look a bit like a troll !!

lallieb said...

@tgill, I agree. Chris was so great and they truly enjoyed working with him and he did put all that into it.

Ana73 said...

rpg - "he's short and hard too see" LOL...he was there on the red carpet i got pics of him too. i think he did what he had to do and no more than that.

about chris w... fans loved the movie and i think that is all that matters, he shouldn't feel bad at all. i actually just read a commentary on eclispe and they bashed it so david slade is going to win some and lose some.

evangeline - no big deal :)

HeartThePretty_EvenMore said...

So happy to hear the numbers. Loved it! I will be going back tomorrow. Now I need to focus on the dialogue. I was so 'dazzled' by Robward, I know I missed a lot of stuff. ;b

@Nik - If you are still around Rosie the Elephant posted this on her twaddle today. I thought you might get a kick out of it. She's a fiesty girl. LOL

b<
Rosie_Elephant Overheard makeup artist telling the boy how "hot" he was in Eclipse. Is there a #trunkhitch? 'Cause we totally have one. ;-) >

Well, since I contributed to this by seeing it three times since 12:01 AM today, I am not surprised at all.

Watching it in LA, with the NB's at the Premiere, was mind-blowing, and 3 viewings later, it still is. David Slade is pure genius! Rob is perfection as Edward and the Meadow, the Leg Hitch, the Proposal, the battle scenes and even *whispering* Jasper, are the best parts of the movie. If you can see it at IMAX, please do. LARGE ROBWARD, nuff said.

ROBsessed89_MIAwithROB said...

surprise surprise...ok NO who in the world doubted that ECLIPSE was indeed going to break records????...NOT ME ahaha...well im going to see it again hopefully 2morrow can't wait =)

Wow, just wow. I just got back from seeing Eclipse for the first time and loved it. My daughter said Eclipse is the best movie ever! I didn't want to leave the theatre. Wanted to stay and see it again.

David Slade may not have gotten along with the cast but he directed a superb movie. I can't believe E online only gave it a C. That is not a C movie! It is an A movie!!

Treasure_7 said...

Eclipse was awesome!! It was my favorite book, and I am not surprised that it is breaking records.

GOROB said...

Dear Nikola6. How come in Forbes, Rob only had $17 million and Kristen only had $12 million? They looked pretty poor compared to all the other celebrities!

rpattzgirl survived Rob! said...

For those asking, the NBs will be giving a story on our adventure during the premier...CL is going to write it, then the rest of us can add our parts to it...and Nik, Dessert & Loisada & I have our story for Friday/Sat at the Chateau & WFE set...

There were pappz at the set while we were there, I turned the tables & took pics of the pappz!

MMc said...

OFF TOPIC - Kristen is on George Lopez right now........her dad works on the set - he looks like a hippie from the 60's! She said that Summit offered her a ridiculous amount of money to NOT cut her hair for Runaways but she did it anyway.

I wonder if they did they same for Rob? If so they are both being pretty bold to defy Summit.

I hope Rob's grows back before BD.

They finally showed a picture of Max her cat she calls Jella - it's a bengal cat - looks really pretty and exotic. She says her cat is very affectionate and sleeps with her.

Her hidden talent is juggling - and said Rob wanted her to hula hoop and juggle while he had a match in his mouth or something like that when they got the Best Kiss on MTV awards - but she nixed that and it flopped anyway.
She likes golf too. This was a different interview - maybe cause her dad was there - she was much more animated and fun and actually let down her guard for a few moments. She mentioned Rob and the whole crowd got quiet.........that was funny. She said that they all get along really well and if they didn't they'd "be screwed". I've probably seen 15 clips of Eclipse today.

Billy looks GREAT - so tall, but no mustache! Awww. He looks younger actually - so so cute.
Ok ya'll - I have a new crush........BILLY is awesome. Gorgeous hair and so cool.

He said he started making his character with a full beard but dropped down the to the "cop stache" cause he wanted to look different when he wasn't in Charlie mode.

So it's like everyone on the movie has had a wig or facial hair added except Rob, it seems. He'd BETTER not have to wear a wig in BD - that would suck.

Sorry to go on but wasn't sure if anyone saw this show.

Billy up next

GOROB...

I just typed out a mile long post explaining about his salaries and backend deals and why I believe he's going to walk away from all of this with about a 100 million in his pocket and this stupid computer deleted it. I cannot control this thing. It's got a hair trigger response and if you just barely brush your fingers over a key, all kinds of shit happens. Anyway...

I cannot type that whole thing out again. I'll lose my mind if I do.

But no, these number don't look too big but these are 2009 totals only and these two are just getting started and they're not making the kinds of money or have the backend deals that these other more established stars have and have had for years.

Except for the Twilight franchise...they're getting A-list salaries and backend deals for that. For one reason only. They are absolutely indespensible to this franchise. Without their further participation in BD, there would be no BD and Summit would stand to lose billions of dollars. So what's a 100 million to Rob and another 100 million to Kristen in exchange for the billions that Summit's going to make because Rob and Kristen signed up for the last go round? Not much.

And pay no attention to what you publicly hear about their salaries. Because of the recession, publicists are no longer flaunting these huge movie star salaries as it is seen as being in poor taste and Hollywood doesn't want to put the public off in anyway. So despite what you hear, stars are still getting these HUGE salaries but Hollywood is wisely keeping mum about it.

I promise you, Rob is not going to walk away from Eclipse with a paltry 10 million. More like 40 million with his salary and backend deal. Trust me.

KIMMY said...

@Nik: Thank you for your posts. They're always informative and mind-opening and so interesting to read. So please keep them coming.

I just know a little bit about the business and I want all of you to know and understand it too. And I wouldn't say a thing about it except that so many ask the questions and since I know some of the answers I figure...at the risk of being seen as a know it all, what the hell? LOL!

But thank you. That was very kind of you.
