'Little Ashes': Tortured Artist, By Kurt Loder

Robert Pattinson trapped in strange new movie.

Actually, it’s hard to imagine who could play this outlandish character — a man who appeared to believe that life itself was too small to contain him. In Pattinson’s attempted impersonation, we see the pampered young Dalí arriving at the Residencia in a hugely ridiculous frilly shirt and jaw-length bowl-cut hair. Tottering out of his grand car into a bustle of fellow students, he looks like a marionette with a few strings missing, or a rag doll in need of repair. He seems trapped and terrified. But since social reticence is not a quality we associate with the overbearingly outré Dalí, we soon begin to wonder if it isn’t the actor himself who feels desperately out of place in this strange film.
The picture’s focus is on the relationship between García Lorca, a closeted and tormented homosexual, and the flamboyantly odd painter, whose sexual inclinations are anybody’s guess. (He claimed to be exclusively heterosexual.) Dalí knew the poet was in love with him, but always insisted that on the two occasions when García Lorca came on to him sexually, he turned him down. The movie would have it otherwise. (After a while, we wish that we could, too.)
There are some truly shameless scenes here. We see García Lorca shooting lovelorn glances at Dalí, then scurrying off in a fit of guilt to confide to a plaster Madonna that “I have had impure thoughts.” We see the boys recumbent on a beach, Dalí with his head propped on his friend’s thigh as García Lorca reads his poetry aloud. There’s an artsy nude moonlight swim that with only the tiniest of adjustments could be converted into a cologne commercial. And there’s a spectacularly lurid interlude in which García Lorca, desperate to demonstrate an acceptable manliness, has sex with a woman on a bed while Dalí watches (possibly masturbating, not sure) from a dark corner of the room.

I've seen it here in SF!!!! Robert is everything in this movie -- hilarious, dramatic, outrageous, gorgeous. He and Javier are so exhilirating. OOOHH! I don't think there's going be any pair who will come close to the sexiness of Javier & Robert, nope! Not any man/woman, man/man pairing.
Okay, for me the accent was the negative in this film. The director should have given the Robert & Matthew a few more days to the accent & should have provided a rigorous practice with a very good speech coach; but given the budget...they probably didn't even try.
Other than the "not convincing accents" watching Robert & Javier, in the film is fascinating!

I hate this review, I think Rob will be great in this movie!

Nicky said...

I think he is being unfair and cruel. While I agree that Rob's performance doesn't hold a candle to Javier's, Rob is STILL LEARNING, and at least some of the media (like Roger Ebert for example)are giving him credit for 1) being in the movie to begin with and 2) for trying his best at the role, almost too hard in a way, and that is where he fails alittle bit. But never mind, he is a diamond in the rough!

Anna said...

interesting assessment of Robvador, Leanne. From the clips I've seen, I'd actually tend to agree with you more than with the "best performance ever" comments. Doesn't make me love Rob less; he tries so hard to be good at what he does, it's totally endearing.

Hi LittleBear: I saw the whole movie in London in March, and that was just the impression I got. I kept thinking that he was, without meaning to, slapping me over the head with his performance. I don't know how else to describe it. But Javier on the other hand...wonderful. But that being said, there was some scenes where Rob seem to settle in to it abit better, when the chemistry between them really shone through...so overall, I actually liked the movie alot.

Lucky you Leanne, I want to see that movie so bad! Maybe I'll just go down to London this weekend, if it's not sold out.

Mrs. Robinsane, I don't know where in Maine you are, but I have left messages/emails for Railroad Square Cinemas in Waterville, The Grand in Ellsworth, Movie Magic in Bangor, and Reel Pizza in Bar Harbor. Seriously I never bother with critics. I rarely agree with them anyways. I have noticed something, when some film is MAJORLY popular the critics tend to hate it, when an actor is very popular in an indie movie the critics hate the actor it seems. Jealousy perhaps? lol.

Probably not but still, who really cares about those who are paid to see something they don't wanna see and thus gives that movie (or concert for that matter) a lousy review? And Kurt Loder? he is still on MTV? Seriously? He must be the oldest one there lol

And when MTV actually WAS a music channel and cool..yeah the good ol' days..now they're nothing more than a regular TV network IMO. They hardly show any music videos anymore!

~~Swept Away~~ said...

Jewels64 & Suz - I agree. I am showing my age here but I think Kurt Loder was on MTV when it first launched and I was in 7th grade then... I'm 38 now!!

I tend not to listen to the reviews because most often I love what they hate and dislike what they loved. So this review lets me know I am going to really love this movie... (when I get to see it).

I think its important that this site remain balanced about things like this. Giving us good and poor reviews is just giving us a more complete picture of what people are saying about the movie. I really like Leanne's comment. Rob is still learning. He's only made a handful of movies so far, and he has a long way to go. Everyone has to start somewhere. The key is that he is giving himself 100% to every role and learning all he can along the way. We may be fans, but we can be critical of Rob and his work. I believe that Rob would rather we look at him through a lens of objectivity rather than think everything he does is perfect. No doubt he has incredibly high expectations for himself and like the rest of us, won't always meet those expectations. Being critical of his work is different than being critical of him as a person; criticism doesn't make us any less devoted to or enamored of him.

I haven't seen this film yet, and I appreciate everyone who has posted giving their personal review of the film. I'm very excited to see it! I don't usually take critics' reviews into account anyway when deciding whether or not to see a movie, but I thank Goz and Dani for putting it all out there so we can decide for ourselves. :)

KK:

Very well said—and I totally agree.

Personally, I am VERY picky about movies, books, etc., and virtually NEVER see/read something that I think is 100% successful the whole way through. (I am a little less critical about music, because I think the emotional/nostalgic value of songs can override my tendency to analyze/dissect everything.)

When we read negative reviews, especially ones that aren't particularly on-point or thoughtful, I suspect some of us get our dander up because of that irresistible urge to "protect" RP from perceived harm and/or remain thoroughly supportive of his career.

That being said, lord knows I could go on for pages, picking apart the deficiencies of the Twilight movie (including—gasp!—some unevenness in RP's performance), while still hearting RP and maintaining my status of a firm RP supporter.

(*said "firm RP"*) ;)

Mrs. Robinsane said...

P.S. I guess Kurt Loder was not dazzled by Little Ashes. :)

*moral dilemma*

TwiHartRK said...

KK - I agree Rob would like people to be objective.

As uncomfortable as he has admitted being in some scenes it doesn't surprise me if that came across. I was hoping he could channel that into communicating Dali's eccentricities. Perhaps he fell short, in some ways. The material he was working with, the script, inexperience, direction? Who would argue that it is still a bold move to take the part - even if he probably never anticipated the attention this film is getting.

I've heard agreement that it would be very difficult for any actor to become Dali without looking like they were engaged in a "attempted impersonation". And I question if the reviewers recognize the camp Dali put out there. His voice, his over the top mannerisms.

What is bothering me is that I think this could be an instance of Rob's celebrity causing increased scrutiny and critcism. There may be enough weaknesses in the film and controversy to latch on to.

I'm surprised at reviews criticizing the speculative aspects of the film. Since when did any biographical piece not contain fiction and speculation? It seems hypocritical for a film and script that is admittedly speculative and based on Dali's own ambiguous statements.

And the different ends of the spectrum - It's either too provocative or too conventional (love story)??? Do they miss the irony of their criticism of it being provocative when the subject matter is DALI? Who was nothing if not ambiguous and flamboyant and provocative.

I haven't seen the film. But I will see for myself if it is provocative just for the sake of it, or over-simplifying a complex relationship into a "conventional" package. My sense is that neither was the intention.

And I hope he learned something and takes something from the experience. And we know he won't be watching himself in it ;).

KK (she who maintains decorum) said...

TwiHeart - Excellent posting. I worry too that Rob's celebrity status is going to increase the scrutiny of him. He is now under a microscope, and some aren't going to hesitate to LOOK for the slightest imperfection in him. I was actually not happy with U.S. today claiming that he is now #1 in media exposure. That is never a good thing. Unfortunately, much of the media exposure is based on his personal life not his work, which must be incredible sucky (do you love my profound vocabulary???). Could you imagine working your ass off, and people being more focused on every little thing you do in your private life than on what you have created? Such is the nature of the celebrity machine.

I can't even imagine how difficult it must have been to play Dali. I know Rob has claimed that he took the role because he needed an acting job, but this role also took courage to approach, and the fact that he dedicated himself so completely to honoring Dali's eccentric personality means more to me as a fan than whether or not he could do it perfectly.

KK (she who maintains decorum) said...

Hi TwiHeart:

Thanks! I simply can't abandon my critical faculties, just because I have been Robsmacked.

*coining new term(?)*

DD said...

Hi KK and Twiheart - I totally agree. We need to remember that he was only 21 when he made Little Ashes. The role of Dali is complex and challenging and he is still developing his craft. Other actors his age are doing "fluff stuff" movies like HSM. I appreciate his committment to his art and his willingness to put himself on the line with each role.

And I agree that he would appreciate objective feedback and share the concern over his almost instant fame getting in the way of that.

I looked up the meaning of the name "Robert"...its meaning is "bright fame".

jorja said...

Critics are not going to like this for many reasons.
1. It's not gay enough
2. It's too gay
3. It's Rob and he's too commercial
4. They didn't make the movie.
5. It's not the movie they would have made if they knew how to make movies.
and so forth...

Mostly, I am astonished by supposedly great (and informed) critics who comment on how silly it was for Rob to have a mustache. Um... if the historical figure was bald, would it be silly to have an actor playing him be bald?

I have seen the movie and I think Roger Ebert's review was fair - if you are talking about the importance of being fair.

Post the reviews that are articulate and informed and contain valid arguments and opinions and please don't post the ones that appear to have personal agenda underlying.

There are choices I would have made differently and there are times when Rob is a little too self-conscious. But the overall movie should get the review - not just Rob. It is beautifully mounted - cinematography, sets, costumes, music, etc. All of the actors are uniformly good - Beltran and Gatell are simply outstanding. Javier Beltran is reminiscent of the finest performances by Raul Julia.

My problem is that the movie feels like it was re-edited to make it more appealing only to gay audiences and I think that was a mistake. This is a movie that has much wider appeal to people who like art cinema.

Should you go see this in a big theater? ABSOLUTELY.

Is it perfect? No. Is it Rob's movie? Not really. For me it's Javier Beltran all the way, and I had never heard of him before this movie.

Even my guy commented on how spectacular he is.

And my guy is most definitely straight!

margot said...

don't you feel like Rob's crewmates changed their attituse towards him ... like, I don't know the begining of this year ? now they speak of him (and it sounds genuine) as of talented and shy and nice, etc, all the really sweet stuff ... last year they didn't sound so ... warm... is thst only me ?

Mrs. Robinsane - My friend and I are wrestling with our plot ideas. We will be writing in tandem at many points because we are each taking on one of the two main characters. Right now, we are both journaling pages and pages of thoughts from each character's POV. We also each have several random scenes developed though we don't know where they're gonna go yet. On Memorial Day weekend, I'm flying to Chicago (where she lives), and we're going to lock ourselves in her tiny apartment to hammer out the plotline so we can begin really writing as soon as possible. Our writing styles and personalities are almost identical, so the in-tandem writing should be made easier by that.

We can support each other through this process while we're on the blog.

Avery - "Small" as far as seats close together. Of course, they could have sat indian-style because everyone does that in a limo, no?

The only "delusions" that appear on this site are the delusions that people here are interested in the K/R speculation. As I'm sure you've read many times, most here don't care if they are or are not together. We are here to discuss Rob's work, his wonderful personality and his extreme hotness. The rest is none of our business.

Hypocritical, ignorant and hateful? Perhaps in your posting. If you have a problem with this site, there are plenty of other sites where people are solely focused on what you seem to be interested in.

KK (she who maintains decorum) said...

A/L.A. - I made the comment about the limo "footsie." If you look at the pics, there was no way to avoid their legs and feet touching each other unless they sat kiddie-corner. Why would they do that if they are having a conversation???

I agree with TwiHeart that we are obviously too blind and stupid to figure out what is really going on. The bigger question is why does anyone give a damn???

Mrs. Robinsane said...

KK:

Yikes—suddenly hostile environment!

Will I face a smackdown if I venture, with trembling hand, my comedic post?????

KK (she who maintains decorum) said...

"Blind and stupid" said facetiously, of course, in case there are people on here too "ignorant" (per Ms. Avery) to figure that out.

KK (she who maintains decorum) said...

Mrs. Robinsane - Just couldn't hold it in anymore. We have been having a perfectly lovely time here, and there is no reason it should be spoiled.

Post. I've got your back. :)

DD said...

Ok, I finally looked at the pics and can only say .. who cares? I come to this site because who talk about Rob, his talent, his incredible personality and totally heartstopping good looks.

There are plenty of sites that are happy to spend time talking about the latest useless gossip. I am glad that this site is not one of them.

Sitting "indian-style" —LOL!!!

Earlier today, I watched the Apple Store interview—where, after a fan encounter, he did, in fact, sit "indian-style" upon his swiveling chair! And all I could think was: Rob is thinking, "Protect the crotch. Protect the crotch!" :)

So if he RESISTED the urge to go indian-style in the limo, that was CLEARLY an open invitation to Kristen. Case closed. ;)

DD said...

Speaking of how great I think this site is...anyone know where Goz and Dani are today?

TwiHartRK said...

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

We'll never know what happened following the limo ride, but how she resists crawling into his lap I'll never know.

Mrs. Robinsane said...

Okay, guys. This might take a minute.

Rose said...

Hello Alie... I couldn't resist:))

I'm going to make a generalized statement here:

To get angry at others because they do not share your opinions is fruitless. You cannot control another person's opinions.

While you may be passionate in your beliefs about something, you also have to realize that allowing yourself to be angered over someone not believing what you believe only leads you down a path of negativity. Calling other people names not only riles you up and puts you in a dark place, it offends people who do not deserve to be treated as such.

Be happy. Go places and do things and talk to people who bring you happiness. :)

Rose said...

A/LA ~ Nice statement:)

TwiHartRK said...

Oh Rose! Sorry I had to step away. So happy you are here. Did you bring some words of wisdom to share?

TwiHartRK said...

Well said A/L.A.

I don't get angry when people don't share my opinions. I get angry when they call my friends names and are patronizing and rude.

Hence, I'm a bit peeved ATM.

Rose said...

Oh Alie... you know I puffy heart you forever.

I found the limo pics interesting... but then any picture with Rob in it is fascinating to me.

Twilight also got bad reviews. Goz and Dani posted them. We don't need to hide our heads in the sand, just because we are pro-Rob. Rob will grow as an actor. Bad reviews won't end his career or make us like him any less. Hopefully they will help him analyze his acting and make it better.

And we will continue to support him as he learns his craft.

Anyway, there was fun to be had here, let's get back to it! I want to read Mrs Robinsane's theory!!

TwiHartRK said...

I'm hearing "the voice of reason" coming from somewhere?? Oh, Hi AJ! It's YOU.

Rose said...

What was mrs. Robinsane's theory?
Don't make me go back and read previous bullshit.

And people who love what they do want to be the best at it. Being surrounded by "yes" folks all the time won't help them reach their goals. Rob will only get better and better (I believe) as he makes more films. And we are lucky enough to go along for the ride! :)

Anonymous said...

Rose - my little flower. How the heck are ya?

And Twi♥!!!!!

Where is Kendra the stripper in the RobStew photos? Surely she is hiding in the trunk or waiting back at the hotel.

TwiHeart- that link you posted would make anyone feel beter! :)

KK (she who maintains decorum) said...

AJ - I believe the stripper was photoshopped out. Didn't you see the black, amorphous blob on Rob's lap????? :D

TwiHartRK said...

True KK. He's just getting started I hope. Tip of the iceberg and such.

Rose, Mrs. Robinsane theory - In comparison with the Apple store interview (where he has his legs crossed to protect the goods?) He seems to be offering them up...

LMAO!

Rose said...

AJ~ It's so great to see you on the blog!

Anonymous said...

LOL @ KK. Oh, but of course. I should have thought of that.

Are we spreading rumors here 'cause I'm pretty sure it was Rob's sex hair that got Heidi Klum pregant on the Jay Leno show.

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST! Laimey and Asablanca will be reporting it next.

KK (she who maintains decorum) said...

AJ - I just hope Laimey and the ass man are paying you for your truth. :P

TwiHartRK said...

Bshht, AJ, there' no way Rob impregnated Heidi Klum. Haven't you heard he's gay? Kristin is gay, too. So's Nikki. Everyone is gay.

Anonymous said...

Rose - I know! Long time no blog. I've forgotten how this works.

The Apple interviews - those Roblegs fold under like the legs of a transformer. How does he do that? They're so long they could wrap around the chair (or me) 3 times.

Rose said...

Laimey has been rather quiet on Rob lately...

Shani said...

Let me put my two cents in.

KK- Is right on both fronts.

Avery-Don't be mad, just look at it from both sides. Either way we all want the best for Rob.

Margot- Since no one has answered your qusetion so far. No his castmates have always loved RP and said positive things about him. Espeacilly Kellan. Look back at the old Cosmo Girl video of RP, Kellan, and Taylor. It's on this site but you would have to go back aways. If you can go to You Tube or to Cosmopolitian.com.

Anonymous said...

Laimey will be belligerating again in no time. I heard she's gay (for you A/LA)

TwiHartRK said...

Ok, I know I've lost it cuz I would enjoy Rob and some muppet discourse.

AJ! Heidi is gonna have to add Rob's name to her tat. RP, right after the squiggly SEAL and the stars. Or maybe a unicorn?

Anonymous said...

oops - not gay for you A/LA. But I threw that in there just for you.

Okay, forget it. I'm gay.

KK (she who maintains decorum) said...

Shani - True. I've always gotten the warm fuzzies from the cast toward Rob.

TwiHartRK said...

LMAO AJ!!

I'd go gay for you.

Rose said...

Thats gotta be worth at least a nickel, Shani.

I wish I had the energy to go back and figure out what people are talking about... but let's face facts. I'm lazy as hell right now.

Anonymous said...

NO, AJ, I AM GAY!! That is why I spend all my time posting perverted things about RP... I'm gay, he's gay, we're all okay.

Mrs. Robinsane said...

KK, TwiHeart, and any other interested parties:

Imagine, if you will, that Rob, or even a Rob associate (RP-by-proxy?), really WAS lurking in the shadows of the long thread, this past Thursday night (or even now, for that matter... :)).

Here is the subsequent interview.

An Interview with Robert Pattinson
Reprinted courtesy of The Holy Underpants Digest

The Holy Underpants Digest: So Robert, could you please tell our readers what you have been doing, in your time away from the "New Moon" set?

Robert Pattinson: Not much, really.

THUD: Nothing at all?

RP: Well...the other night, I was in my windowless hotel room with Kellan [Mrs. R: yes, Kellan—Kellan, NOT Kristen], explicating Rimbaud, when Kellan suddenly HAULED me—he's quite brawny, actually...I swear I heard his white shirt rip a bit, like paper towels tearing along their perforations, as we grappled...it didn't stand a chance, really...in fact, we call it "Tissue Top" (smutty chortle)...anyway, he absolutely HAULED me over to his laptop computer, to show me this blog he'd been reading.

And all of these extraordinary women were having this HUGE discussion—about me! Well...there were lots of bits about themselves, too...some of them shockingly personal...but primarily they wrote about me. Me! (blushing) Amazing!

THUD: And what was the name of the site?

RP: (blush deepening) It was called... robsessedpattinson.com.

THUD: Oh! Robsessed! I know it well. And did you fancy any of these admirers?

RP: (cheeks blazing red) Er...There was one...a sweet, clever little minx...she was called Mrs. Robinsane.

THUD: Mrs. Robinson/Robinsane. Got it.

RP: (earnestly) Oh, she CLAIMED to be an "older" fan, but, honestly, people will think that I am the one robbing the cradle! [Mrs. R: Cot? Do Brits say "robbing the cot"? Or is it "NICKING the cot"? Must research. Oh, and yes—I did say "people will think." WILL think.]

THUD: She sounds charming! I'm sure they'll understand the attraction.

RP: Kellan got on there straight away, signing on as "The Barkeep." Trying to hook us up! Imagine it! (throaty laugh; entangling fingers in hair)

Kellan (from makeshift bed on carpet): You should have seen his face! (choking with mirth) You'd think his "mum" had caught him with a dirty magazine!

RP: (under his breath) Yes, hilarious...Don't dissolve that shirt with your tears of laughter, Kellan....

THUD: So what did the lady say?

RP: (enthusiasm returning) Oh, I made Kellan delete his comments. (smiling slyly) You see, I'd much prefer to contact her privately. (reaching for phone to ring up travel agent)

:)

Mrs. R- I think someone should be writing a FF. You just started something interesting.

KK~ I agree! But I thought that body was too small... and thin... even for Rob.

Mrs R-

Uh, could you perhaps ask THUD to have Robert further expound on that bit where Kellan's Bounty top rips as he hauls Roberto to the chair? I need more details. It sounds kind of gay. (That's okay).

But if so, it PROOVES Rob has his legs uncrossed for you.

Twi- What the hell happened the other night??? What did The Barkeep say??? Damn, I know better than to be focused on my real life. That's when you miss shit.

Diane said...

My reaction to LA is posted with the others, but I think Mr. Loder's review merits a critique of its own.

His opening sentence implies a familiarity with Dali's character that is not borne out by subsequent comments. Concluding that "the actor" must feel desperately out of place since the outrageous Dali never would, misses the whole point. It was Dali's crippling fears and limitations, the knowledge that he could never be "normal," that made him compensate by going over the top with everything he did. It was that or remain in the fetal position his entire life.

"The actor" does a terrific job of showing the zygote Dali feeling his way through the steps he had to take to convince the world that he was in a class of his own and therefore, beyond judgment, beyond trying to fit it.

He may have claimed to be heterosexual; he also claimed to be God, but what is known is his terror of female anatomy, his phobia about penetration (pitching or catching, equally panic-inducing), and that he chose a wife who was both shrewdly ambitious and known for her constant affairs before and during their very business-oriented marriage.

The movie does NOT have it otherwise when it comes to consummation. It's clear that Dali loved and was attracted to Lorca but incapable of following through. Why scenes that depict the tenderness they feel for each other should be termed "shameless," I'm not sure. Also unclear is why Mr. Loder should be unfamiliar with masturbation, but that's actually his problem and one I don't want to hear about.

Anonymous said...

LOL @ Rose.

Yes - someone fill us in on the Barkeep. I missed that whole episode.

Speaking of FF, Mrs. Rob(insane), this is aimed at you-- I have not read too many FFs, but I think the ones I'd recommend to you would be:

Wide Awake (angsty but really has a good plot structure and character development)

The Office (which is smutty but involving)

In the beginning I wasn't sure I wanted to read The Office but the newest chapters are going in a direction that makes up for some of the harshness at the beginning.

KK (she who maintains decorum) said...

Shani - What is this craziness you're talking about your real life? Robsessed is your real life!!! The rest...jobs, family, life goals, sanity...it's all superfluous to the sh*t going on here. :D

I really don't like to read to much anyway. SO then one I said, "what the hell" and read it. I haven't looked back since and have read I don't know how many FF's by now.

AJ:

In brief, re: The Barkeep:

I had been regaling/boring the ladies with my anecdotes about my encounters with musicians, which had involved the exchange of fluids (WATER! Truthfully, I was talking about water!).

So, out of nowhere, The Barkeep flew on and commented that I was clearly a very intelligent, witty woman, and that Rob and I should never leave our bed, except when necessary to consume nourishment and regain our strength (*wishful embellishing*)—well, The Barkeep DID say that RP+Mrs. R+water would be a very good thing.

Hence my quick reply: sprinting naked to RP in the ocean.

And the even quicker removal of The Barkeep's post.

And there you have it. :)
