The Guardian (UK) Interview

Bloodsucker blues
Before bagging the role of Twilight's heartthrob vampire, British actor Robert Pattinson was ready to pack it all in. Now he has fans camped outside his hotel. So why the long face, wonders Amy Raphael
Amy Raphael
The Guardian, Saturday 2 May 2009

Before Robert Pattinson auditioned for the part of Edward the vampire in Twilight, he took a quarter of a Valium to see where it would take him. He got the part. He had no idea what he'd signed up for: he might have been aware that Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga had attracted 17m readers worldwide and that the Mormon mother from Arizona was the biggest publishing phenomenon since JK Rowling. What he didn't see coming were the teen girls who'd fallen in love with the sensitive, tortured Edward of Meyer's books. First they revolted online, calling Pattinson a gargoyle – and worse. Then they changed their minds, fell in love with him en masse and refused to leave him alone.

Pattinson, who turns 23 later this month, has become an international pin-up since Twilight was released last year. He's probably bigger news even than Daniel Radcliffe. After all, Harry Potter still seems like a little boy while Edward is a passionate, redblooded teen vampire in love with a mortal schoolgirl called Bella. Forget that gargoyle nonsense, too: Pattinson is an unlikely fusion of Johnny Depp and Doctor Whoelect Matt Smith. He favours the same vintage clothes as Depp and the actors share the same tough femininity; he's got the same architectural hair as Smith, the same asymmetrical features and strangely alluring face. Oh, and he's six-foot tall with the lean body of youth.

Yet Pattinson himself can take none of the attention seriously. Educated at a private day school in London, he has the kind of posh English accent Americans love, but he's not remotely pretentious or full of himself. His Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella, once said that Pattinson can't lie; he also can't seem to stop talking. Right now he's describing the hotel room in Vancouver, where he's been filming New Moon, the second in the Twilight quartet. "I've been living in this windowless room on the 30-something floor. Because the people who built it were afraid of people killing themselves! It's one of those business hotels. I guess they're worried about not being able to charge so much for rooms if guests were killing themselves …"

Most actors live in apartments, or at least hotel suites, while on set. But not Pattinson: "I've settled there now. It would take about three weeks for me to gather all my belongings. I don't let the maids in. I don't even pull the duvet down now because I don't want to see what's underneath."

There are always fans waiting outside the hotel but he tries not to think about the phenomenal level of fame he's reached in north America; he says he'd go mad if he did. So he tries to disguise himself: "But instead I'm just getting more and more conspicuous; I'm wearing two hoods, a hat and sunglasses, which kind of stands out in the middle of the night. So I'm learning to sprint."

(Dani's note : Good God he is awesome...proof positive right here)
At times Pattinson sounds grown-up, but he also lapses into adolescent silliness. Ask if he has a fake hotel name and the giggling starts: "I was Clive Handjob in Paris. Everyone in the hotel called me 'Monsieur Handjob'. That was good, cheap fun."

When he got the role of Edward, Pattinson was sent to have his hair cut and dyed. He was given a personal trainer and, for the first time, got himself a six pack. He was also sent for media training to help him handle the juggernaut of publicity required for Twilight (in the US principal cast members have to participate in events such as "hype-building panels" to push the fi lm). He may now look more like a movie star but he still says things he shouldn't. In one interview, he volunteered the information about the Valium and then seemed to dismiss Little Ashes, an arthouse film he made before Twilight, as "nothing". He also pointed out, rather brashly, that "we didn't even have trailers".

Pattinson's experience of film-making is limited – at 17, he won the small part of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, a role he reprised in the Order Of The Phoenix; he then lived off the pay cheque for a few years – but he's already got regrets. Little Ashes explores the homosexual relationship between surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and the romantic poet and dramatist Federico García Lorca in Spain in the early-1920s. It's a fascinating period – the surrealist film-maker Luis Buñuel was also hanging around – but art historians have already questioned the veracity of Philippa Goslett's script, saying that there's no proof Dalí and Lorca actually consummated their relationship.

(Get ready for interviewer pissing Rob off now...good job lady)
Made for a modest £1.4m, Little Ashes suffers from its ambition, and Pattinson – with only Harry Potter under his belt – struggles to portray the hugely complex Dalí with any real conviction. Yet he briefly blows up when I mention his dismissal of the film as "nothing". "I hate having to do all this shit! I've already been told to apologise for saying it. I was just trying to say that it was a tiny, little film. It had a minuscule budget. I was just trying to say that if Twilight hadn't come along, I don't know how much Little Ashes would have been publicised. In an ideal world, everyone would go around watching arthouse films about Dalí and Lorca. But a lot of people have no idea who Lorca even was."

(And more of Rob gettin spicy, I kind of find the angry Rob sexy)
He collects himself: "People love all the negative stuff – 'He doesn't like the film!' 'He's a homophobe!' Oh great." Now that he's been told to make amends, Pattinson is actually taking Little Ashes more seriously. He even watched it the other night. And he never watches himself on screen, ever. "It's like self-flagellation, so why would I bother? And I didn't want to piss on anyone's grave. It was hard to watch my first scene, in which I turn up in this funny little hat … I was worried about watching them, but Dalí and Lorca's sex scenes were in fact the best scenes."

Twilight fans, being obsessive, will certainly be checking out a nearly-naked Pattinson in Little Ashes (be warned: this is pre-six pack, though his skin is vampishly livid).

That's the problem with suddenly becoming very famous; the skeletons fly out of the closet at breakneck speed. And Dalí's fetching little hat in Little Ashes is nothing compared to the succession of dodgy old adverts that have reappeared recently. There are some particularly fetching ones on the net of Pattinson in pants or trunks, with bouffant hair and a cheesy smile. "Really? When I looked like a real … weirdo? I swear to god that's illegal! It's just so embarrassing. Actually, I saw one the other day."

Pattinson does seem to be overwhelmed with his lot right now. He hasn't asked Daniel Radcliffe for advice – "I haven't got his number!" – and is predictably prickly when asked about being defined by his role in Twilight. He spouts a lot of media training rubbish about making absolutely the best movie he can in the hope that people will see him as a good actor and not just as Edward. In the brief time I talk to him, it seems that he's in a place he never intended to be; after all, he was contemplating giving acting up before the Edward audition.

But perhaps he's happy with his life and it's just the interviews he hates. He says that when he's doing phone interviews in his hotel room, he sometimes wishes there was a window to jump out of. He's only joking, of course, but it seems that the actual process of acting has got lost in the fog of Hollywood publicity.

Sometimes he has fun making things up in interviews. Such as? "I do really intellectually highbrow stuff in my downtime. I read first-edition Shakespeare. I write poetry. I'm trying to get my masters in neuroscience. That's the kind of guy I am." He pauses, clearly amusing himself: "Man, I don't even know what a masters is." And he laughs hysterically as he creates another shape with his hair.
• Little Ashes is out on Friday

You can't take anything that he says seriously in interviews.

I am sooo glad he got mad and defended himself. People just remember the negative things---he is right because in the same breathe when he said the film was nothing (GQ Interview) he also said ALOT of good things about Little Ashes, how much research he did on the Dali and how much he rehearsed the Dali mannerisms. BUT of course, all people can remember is the "nothing" part!!!!!!!!!

I love and hate this interview.

The interviewer clearly didn't get Rob and we all know it's pretty hard to annoy him. (he's been asked every assinine question a thousand times already), but this interviewer managed to make him testy, insult his talent, his already established committment and hard work on Little Ashes. I am really sad for him now. And since when has he been in nothing except Harry Potter?????

Loisada said...

This journalist and RP must have really hit it off badly. It just goes from bad to worse. The tone of the entire interview is condescending, and even when RP tries to smooth things over with a joke the writer does her best to makes him sound prickly and superficial.

I barely recognize him here! What kind of agenda is this snide mama serving? I'm sad the Guardian even ran this...

I´ve tried to analyze it as I was reading it, but this interview or should I call it better this commentary the interviewer made about his chat on the phone with Robert, doesn’t deserve to be analyzed, it deserves just to be asked: WTF???? … is there a point to it? Is he publishing this article because he actually did have a specific topic of conversation with Robert?? or he was trying to publicize Little Ashes (by dismissing it first)?? Was he trying to get Robert to clear all the gossip??
To me this article, is just about an interviewer who thinks he is too smart to be talking to the “pop up soon to be vanished celebrity” that he thinks is Robert Pattinson, so why not better put him right now in the light he thinks the guy will be soon, and dismissed everything the actor had even been trying to do of his career so far to stand out for.
OK… I´ll admit it.. I hated this shit… done whining about it. =P

We've all watched Rob in some pretty heinous situations over the past 12 months. Ms. Amy Raphael must've been a 1st class condescending Beyoch to illicit any sort of negative response from him. I love his tongue in cheek responses...

Nicky said...

Quite clear to me that this journalist doesn't respect him, which is a shame because no matter what you might say about his acting talents at this point, he is only 22 and people should give him the respect and breathing space to grow as an actor...and not slam him so so early in his career. Basically, give him a break, lady.

God Rob is so freaking acerbic!!!

I adore him! What I wouldn't give to go to dinner with this man just to hear those wheels grind in his head and hear what he has to say!

yes, the interviewer is skeptic about Rob's status, and it shows in the tone of the article. But I believe that it mirors Rob's self doubt in a way.

And the slight condescending tone is so obvious that everyone reading the article will know it's there and take it into account. Especially when she chooses to sum up in one sentence a speach of a couple of minutes ("He spouts a lot of media training rubbish about making absolutely the best movie...").

There are still some very interesting parts, and Rob-like parts in this article.

What, is he now going to jump on the "gay" aspect of Little Ashes, when not two weeks ago he was trashing him over the "tuck" pic?

As an openly gay man he should applaud production of films such as Little Ashes.

NO! hits for Prevez, unless you are punching him in his moronic face!

Songirl - you are so right. This interview just made me mad. I'm getting concerned that this is all going to be to much for him. People are being rude and annoying. He feels trapped and judged all the time. Hides out in his room because CRAZY fans are staking him????????? Grrrrrrrrr people your ruining this poor man. If people don't start backing the fuck off he will one day say fuck it and disappear. Maybe it's already to late and he has had his limit. I'm just so frustrated with people who want a piece of Rob. God I hope he can find a way to deal with all this shit and have some piece of mind soon.

Sorry for my rant. Just looking out for my boy:)

Mrs. Robinsane said...

For someone who was ostensibly trying to give her readers a clearer picture of Rob's work and personality, this interviewer was remarkably biased and unperceptive; she misinterpreted and took out of context so many things that he's previously said and done, and was so cynical about his genuine desire to give an honest and complex performance, no matter the nature of the role.

As intriguing as I find his responses—both the clever ones and the cheeky ones—I'm beginning to wonder if the sheer volume of these interviews is contributing to his discomfort in the world.

Yet, I can't help but observe...he looks like a rugged monk in that photo....

Bottom line: Rob comes off as funny, committed to his work and unpretentious. Interviewer comes off as ignorant hack, who equates a sense of humor with "adolescence" and dismisses his sincere attempts to clarify what he meant as lines he learned in media-training, which we all know he walked out of.

I'm just going to enjoy the Robiliciousness of the interview, knowing that everyone who reads it will come away with one thing - a definite conviction as to which of these people they'd love to meet and engage in conversation.

Yeah--- I am learning that column writers/gossip writers/interviewers (they don't deserved to be called journalist which they often call themselves) are WH@RES, feeding/supporting themselves and their families off the celebrities. They interview Robert, gets paid A LOT for the interview only is they put a twist to every word he says, or pick and choose, publishing only controversial or vague statemements.
YEAH, we got their number. So I read this article as another wh@ring on the part of the interviewer.

This particular "journalist" was more interested in getting Rob to corroborate her opinions about him. Good on Rob for always being himself and maintaining his integrity.

I just hope this kind of relentless media scrutiny doesn't make him jaded and mistrustful, because open, candid nature is one of his best traits and is such a breath of fresh air. In the immortal words of Bono, "Don't let the bastards get you down," Rob!

"Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella, once said that Pattinson can't lie"

I remember that interview, they were together on set, I think. Rob was asked if he was a good liar and said "yes", and in the very same moment she said "no, he can't lie at all". He disagreed, and she blabbered out something like "at least not with your body". He was dead embarrased then, the interviewer was kind enough not to push it any further. (It's not the first time she said something he was dead embarrassed with. I haven't figured out yet if she does things like that on purpose to embarrass him or if she is just very thoughtless. Rob could easily embarrass her but he never did.)

It takes brains, imagination and a good memory to get away with lies. I think Rob is a very good liar if he wants to be. After all, he is an actor, plus he is very intelligent.

Amy Rapheal you are one stupid heifer...condescending...ignorant bitch. RP is 22 years old and not some 42 year old grown man. So yes he's going to act grownup at times then be the silly little boy. Guys act stupid at that age, hell any age.

Then she says he plays Dali with no real conviction.WTF!! Honey that shows right there you did no research on your subject. But RP definitely did an extreme amount of research on Dali. She must only read her crap and no one else interviews.

I'm glad RP got pissed off and didn't let her keep spouting that shit about what he supposedly meant in the GQ article.

Dani your so right an angry RP is so sexy. What I take away from this interview is that I still adore him and would love to be silly with him. I would have him doing some crazy shit all over that hotel messing with people. I mean you get bored and what he needs is a partner in crime...

Phosphorus- Thanks for clearing that up about what Kristen said. You don't know it, but that was such a debate when they did a Canadian interview for eTalk. I LOVED the GQ interview. Rob obvsiouly never meant Little Ashes was "nothing" in a bad way, coz he stated months ago that it was the film he was most proud of and worked hardest on. He was only pointing out that Little Ashes would have not being popular if it wasn't for Twilight, and everyone knows thats true.
Jeez, Noel is right, people only remember the bad things.
This interviewer was a real bitch wasn't she! She clearly wasn't even trying to like Rob she already judged him before she met him.
Why not ask Rob REAL questions instead of trying to upset him on purpose!? Some people have no class or tact.

Little bear, the probably don´t aloud comments on the guarding site because they know their shit is inflammatory and the type of response they would get, “they through the rock but they hid their hands immediately”.

It is good to read your comments, I don´t feel so alone in my feelings, I thought I was overreacting to it haha.
I have to agree that pissed off Rob is kind of sexy ;)
I just feel a little worry because I like the fact that he is not media trained (on the contrary to what this self called reporter said), he says what goes through his mind at the time, his answers varies according to the mood of the interview, I don´t want to se him having to apologize because he is told (and I like that he mentioned he was told to, but he is not apologizing anyway but explaining what he meant in the GQ interview), and as people with two neurons (not the case of the reporter) we understand that if he said about the movie it was “nothing”, he wasn’t referring to the movie but that he was self-depreciating his work on it not the movie it self; I like he is so “politically incorrect” in interviews, I hope he doesn´t change that, other wise he would be like any other celebrity, too conscious of the way they want to be perceived. I hope his intelligence will help him against the media scrutiny and the stalking fans, so far I think the only good thing this interview showed is that he can defend himself.

Just Google The Guardian and you can read the interview.

While I am impressed with the loyalty shown here at Robsessed, aside from a couple ignorant comments, I think this is a pretty interesting interview. As a former TV-Film critic who has interviewed hundreds of actors, I have a different take on this piece.

First of all actors need the publications/publicity to get the word out about their work. Everyone is interested in Rob right now. And, for all of the gazillions of interviews Rob has done, this journalist managed to get some fresh quotes.

This story isn't a news story where objectivity is important because just the facts are being reported. This interview is a personality profile (feature story), which is all about entertainment, opinion, atmosphere, capturing a personality...

I think everyone should enjoy the Rob we see now as he feels his way through handling being famous. We are fortunate to see much more of the private Rob we all fell in love with.

Two or three years from now, there will be far fewer interviews, more concise quotes and less faux paux from Rob.

To me, it sounds like Rob was very tired when he did this interview and rather frustrated with the quotes the guy from GQ chose to use (which are biting him back now). The Guardian interviewer was a bit tough on him, however, that worked in his favor because he had the opportunity to correct himself.

I'm glad this wasn't the usual "puff piece" on Rob. And, as for the masters, of course he knows what that is--he's highly educated (as is his family). Rob is a brat and always has been. That's why we adore him.

(remember the early Potter interviews where he listed himself as being great at all sports--HAHAHAH)

To me, what is kind of bad about this article is that it has no real topic (apart from Rob)... Was it really to promote Little Ashes? Because then, it was waaaay off.
I guess that she thought she was making a sort of analysis of Rob as a person. And I suppose he thought it would be about his involvement in one of his movies (LA?).

It's so sad that all these recent press junkets focus more on him, how fame affects him and so on, and not on his work. Which is why I really liked the how to be comcast interview (unlike some people here appearently): it was really professional and on topic!

PS: a couple of personal questions are of course fine, I love to hear about Rob like everybody here!

phosphorus said...

@ Chicago Girl: I'm pretty sure she did not meet him in person. This interview was done on the phone.

anna F said...

@ Chicago girl now in LA:
you have an interesting point of view, I guess I was adressing the same issue in a way, I was wondering why it was not more about Little Ashes and so much about Rob, I guess you answered my questions there: "This interview is a personality profile (feature story), which is all about entertainment, opinion, atmosphere, capturing a personality..."

Shani said...

Phos- You just cleared up something else I was uncertain about. So she said,"Who wants to see an actor lying on his hands-Naked?" Wait what the hell does that mean??? She's glad that he got hard??? But most actors try to avoid those situations so as not to make the actress uncomfortable. I remember Will Smith talking about that situation in a scene with Eva M. Well if nothing else good came out of it is that KStew knows hoe big he is...heeheee

Shani said...

Oops I meant to say "how" not "hoe"

Shani said...

Phos- Yeah it sounded like it was over the phone. Wait she did say he described the room to her. So yeah it was over the phone. She's still a silly cow

Mechevpao said...

Interesting point you have remarked Chicago girl in LA, thanks for that, is good to see it from other perspective as well.

Thanks phosphorus for clarifying that quote Kristen said, still not getting it too much, but anyway.. someone should make her an interview on that hahah

phosphorus said...

@ Shani: I don't think she was glad, she is just ridiculing him. When I watched that interview I really wondered if all this talk about their chemistry got to her head a bit.

@ anna: I liked the comcast interview, too, for the very same reason.

Anonymous said...

"So why the long face, wonders Amy Raphael"

*sigh*

This was pretty disappointing. It was clear that this woman interviewed with preconceived notions and with the intention of putting him in his place.

What a bitch.

Shani said...

Phos- Okay, I didn't think about it in that way...interesting.

phosphorus said...

@ Shani: I'm sorry, I can't research the link to the other interview (the first one about lying), it's not available here in this country anymore. Blocked due to copyright reasons.

Shani said...

Phos- That's fine. I get the gist of it.

Chicago girl now in LA said...

Phosphorous~

If this indeed was a "phoner" (that's what journalists call phone interviews), that explains even more. Rob has even said he doesn't like talking on the phone and he's definitely more charming in person, so some rapport was lost. I've interviewed many British actors on the phone and there's always a time difference problem on one end. I remember doing phoners to England either very late at night or early in the morning (Chicago/central time). With Rob on Pacific Time, the time gap had to be even greater.

Good point, Phos!

Yes Anna, personality profiles are often published with just a bit about the actor's newest work.

Anna said...

@ Chicago girl: I did get that the piece was supposed to be a subjecive profile, what I did not appreciate was that the interviewer's condescending tone.
Yes, she did get some good quotes, but I choose to credit Rob for that :)

Shani said...

Chicago- Your right, his charm is lost when dealing with time difference and a "phoner". Damn now I thinking about Rob getting a boner...heehee.

Anna said...

if it was on the phone, how come she concludes with "And he laughs hysterically as he creates another shape with his hair" ? Sounds like she could see him!

Shani said...

LB- So true credit Rob for his wit and intelligence to make up for that witches condescending tone.

phosphorus said...

@ bolideinthesky: It might have been her task. "Let's make an interview how he copes with fame nowadays. And the spin is now he got famous he isn't too happy with it either."

Second possibility: The editor wrote or changed the "teaser", giving the story that spin by putting in the question So why the long face.

Anonymous said...

Hey I'm not saying it's true. And also I highly DISAGREE with this claim:

http://www.thescarletblog.com/2009/05/02/robert-pattinsons-look-a-like/

There's none like the real and adorkable Rpattz!

phosphorus said...

@ LittleBear: Well, we all know he does that all the time, don't we? So it's pretty save to throw this little piece in. And she might have heard it even on the phone he was doing it.

Amy Raphael is a free-lance journalist (source: one and two), and I don't think the Guardian paid her the fees to travel to Canada or the US to meet him. Too expensive. So, if she didn't just happen to be on holiday there or researching other stories as well, she did a phoner. (Thanks for the word, Chicago Girl, I didn't know yet how the British and American colleagues call it.)

Even the B&W photo doesn't hide the fact that the Robster has some premature gray in his hair.

Did anyone check out the color of Daddy P's hair on Ellen? It's such a beautiful shiny silver....

I think our Robward has the same hair....

Going gray at the temples first...so delicious....

Oh, his hair has all kinds of colours in it.

Hi ladies! Thanks for this Dani -totally loved and agree w/your comments!

I agree with what you have all said about how this interviewer just didn't get him. He definitely didn't play into her game.

Hi Shani and Phos - here's the link to the "can't lie" interview. It really looks like their joking around. I took it to mean that Rob was "attracted" to Kristen and they had good chemistry but she was too embarrassed to state it openly. Rob seemed to be teasing her cuz she was obviously uncomfortable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsnJAlFwjf0&feature=related

Leann - is this the same Leann w/the avatar of Rob resting his head back on that seat on the last thread? It was making me MELTY - his NECK!!!

hello :)))

I've just come back from my summer house after 2 days and I'm catching up ... really like this interview... I'm sure that Rob is totally different from Hollywood actors, from more of them ... It's been embarassing hearing what they are answering on simple topics, their limited vocabulary and complete lack of knowledge of the outer world, they seem to finish their education
at a very early stage - all in all, it the whole reason of misunderstanding of Rob by the media, they are used to Brittney, Paris or Zac, lots of fans the same

missed you girls for 2 days

This may sound like a stupid question but when was Rob asked to apologise for calling Little Ashes "Nothing" and when/where did he apologise.
He seemed pretty angry in this interview so I'm very curious to know what the big deal is.
If someone could let me know I'd appreciate it.

it took me litterally an hour to read and watch everything to catch up, I can't even imagine my summer holidays - no internet :(

my DH is reading Twilight but I don't really think he'll finish ... I didn't force him into anyway, he saw 4 thick like a brick books, asked about them and I described all-abouts together with the film and world wide craze, he said "really doubt if I like it but let's give it a chance"... roftl, and he's reading. He read 5 first books of Harry Potter few years ago while he had his hip broken and had to just sit in his armchair for 3 months - and he really enjoyed them

TwiHartRK said...

Thanks Jules. Goz doesn't police this place I just don't want her weaseling back on here after what she did. I've never seen Goz pissed at anyone like that and she deserved it. It's "public" record.

I think everyone should be warned. If you haven't already had the pleasure...

Yes, I am the one with the yummy pic of Rob resting his back...but the "seat" he's resting on is Kristen's back! It's one of the most ridiculously hot pics of Rob I've ever seen...can't remember where I got it though! I think I got it from the Twilight Facebook page. There are a couple of him and Kristen posing with some massive piece of rope...don't know what that's about! lol

Chicago/LA Girl, thanks for your take on things. My journalism background was just the straight out reporting who/what/where/when/how type; and I don't use it anyway because now I sell and write advertising, so the positive spin is all I ever do anymore!

When all is said and done, this interview was just a li'l blip in Rob's day/career/life. He probably doesn't even remember it anymore! On to better things.

But I will thank this interviewer for getting Rob to reveal his new nickname, "Monsieur Handjob." I needed a laugh today.

And I'm in agreement, Rob will look "so handsome" (in the words of KStew) with the silver mane, in years to come... *swoon

Loisada said...

Chicago Girl: thanks for the pro perspective, it was enlightening. You're right, she did prod some fresh responses out of him!

Still seems she had a bias from the start she had a hard time shaking off. The Guardian does after all take itself rather seriously, and this kind of comment seems telling: "he has the kind of posh English accent Americans love" (those imbeciles!) .... even if she has to concede: "but he's not remotely pretentious or full of himself". Guess not everyone finds the "adorable brat" side endearing. Perhaps if she'd gotten a little more cheeky herself I would've found it entertaining, instead of plain grating. Still, you're right, it was much better than most puff pieces.

This gives me an idea: what kinds of questions would you ladies ask him if you had the chance??

We should compile the ultimate Robsessed interview, and try to find a way to make it happen!

VeilsofLight said...

Loisada said...

Thanks for the support Veils, but I didn't exactly have the XX version in mind! And anyway, if you put an end to the speculation, you'd kill all the fantasy fun around here!

It would be interesting to know how it makes him feel to be an object of desire for so many people, in the sense has he started to embrace the rock star spotlight high? Or is it a turnoff for him?

Ladies: we're waiting for your submissions!

First question (delivered by me, naturally):

Mrs. Robinsane: In her novel, Twilight, Stephenie Meyer reveals Edward's favorite non-human meal. [blushing profusely; working up the courage to continue; then, in a coy whisper] So, how YOU feel about "cougars"?

RP: Do you consider yourself to be in that category?

Mrs. R: [as she is fainting] Depends upon your answer....

Not good? Oh, okay...I would probably ask him something very serious and respectful about his craft. I just need a minute to recover....

Loisada said...

Hearting you big time Mrs. R!!

Ellie:
My behaviour was bad because seeing pictures of Rob being stalked annoys?
okaaaay...
Yes maybe I was over dramatic, but to be honest I don't care. I feel that I have every right to hate papprazzi pictures, and to be honest, I think most self-respecting people in the world hate those kinds of trashy pictures too.
Sure,I guess I'm sorry for making such a big deal about it, but I do not apologise for my opinion and good morals or for feeling bad for Rob and his invaded privacy.

I enjoy this blog because it is very up-to-date with news and allows comments, which Pattinson Online does not have comments on their site which sucks.
I don't see why I should apologise for hating trashy photos or for feeling bad for Rob's privacy...
I think its good morals to be honest and I really expected more people to agree with me, no matter how popular or funny Gozde may be.
I thought Rob's fans would AGREE that he deserves some privacy and at least not have his own fan-sites posting paparazi pictures.
But hey, clearly I was wrong and people care more about Gozde's funny comments than Rob's privacy.

I don't mind papprazzi photos that much for Celebs that enjoy that sort of attention e.g. Paris Hilton, Jordan, Victoria Beckham etc...
but the whole point I was trying to make is that Rob hates that shit.
People forget that he was not prepared for this sudden fame, he thought Twilight was just another indie film, and then suddenly he's LA's hottest celeb with absolutely no privacy. I'm sorry but I do feel bad for the guy when it comes to that issue.

I didn't want to bring this issue up again but seeing as all my comments are STILL being deleted I'll apologise to Gozde for making a big deal about it last time, but I hope she also sees my point of view too. No hard feelings, its your blog and you can post what ever you want, but I just hope you take Rob's privacy into consideration too ya know?

Twi-heart:
I'm scum because I actually care about Rob's privacy? Wow thats harsh..
There's no need to be so rude, everyone can have an opinion without being called scum or crazy you know!

Mechevpao said...

*rolling eyes*.. Again? Is this necessary? It is very simple, you don´t like paparazzi pics, don´t look at paparazzi pics, it doesn´t matter if Gozde decided to post them or not, if you feel you are stepping into his privacy, ignore the post with the paparazzi pics and go to the one you want to see, no one is forcing anyone here.
And for the record if you want an opinion, I find equally violating in to his privacy, to impose your opinion onto other for what Rob may feel or may not feel about paparazzi pics, talking as if you knew his exact thoughts. We don´t know him, we assume many things about him, but we will never know what he thinks or feel, so for you to present your serlf to other as his consciousness does not make you point valid.

Mechevpao:
With all due respect, Rob has stated several times that he's a paranoid person who doesn't like people looking at him. And I believe he's also stated a least three times that he doesn't like getting his photo taken.
Of course I don't know his exact thoughts but I've seen all his interviews and he's clearly nervous and shy in some ways, and he's openly admitted it several times.
Rob is like the ANTI-CELEB. He doesn't do acting for the fame, he does it for money and the thrill of acting. Maybe he will grow to love fame, but I honestly think at the moment, he doesn't like it too much and he's overwhelming to him. He's still young after all.

Okay so I am not buying into whatever happened before with Kerr-bear but Rob says himself, in this very interview, that he cringes at some of those old photos. Still Kerr-bear he is an intelligent young man and must know that with success comes all the negative aspects of fame as well as positives. Whether he copes well with it? only time will tell. We can do little about it. We can just be a collective 'support team' here. SO lets leave it alone and talk about something else.
Amy Raphael is a freelance writer who interviews entertainers. It is not surprising the Guardian picked up this 'puff piece' on Rob. It is a left leaning liberal paper so a slightly mocking piece on a well educated/well spoken English kid who is taking Tinseltown by storm (wait..I meant the world)is not that unexpected.
Funny that she accuses Rob of rambling I thought that her whole piece was just that.Rambling.

kespax said...

My observations on this weird interview -
a)from my obsessive scouring of Rob interviews, in print and on utube, he's a sensitive, intuitive, and responsive subject. He responds to the 'kind' of interviewer he's facing, and the situation he's facing. He can be pure fun with the young fun people, MTV etc; he can be totally professional on the promo circuit patienly responding to the same questions over and over again; he can be reflective and imaginative if he meets an interesting interviewer; and he can be so sweetly natural & enthusiastic/spontaneous - the qucik bites on the red carpets & at events.
My fave is with Haley/artist on artist, because it's not really an inteview it's a charming conversation.

This guardian bitch is all over the place, one minute she knd of gets it and succumbs to the Rob allure the next she's just off some spacey place - so he must have become quite frustrated with her crap. It would be very telling and interesting to see what she actually asked him.

b)Rob mania. UK is a behind the eightball, and I think some press may be a bit peeved they missed this diamond, only ever mildly enthuising a bit during HP.From a distance - in Australia; the main sources to feed our frenzy is the US, with bits here and there from around the world.

I have searched for more UK coverage, would love to see some RP appearances on UK shows etc, and there just isn't much at all.
And there are UK forums I visit for other stuff where they are a bit bewildered by the Rob passion.

I may be totally wrong - UK posters???
But not everyone is getting what is happening out here in our worldwide Rob addiction world; US are onto it; Australia only a bit - we don't get much coverage of the phenomenon.

Loisada & Mrs. Robinsane~Lol! You two are quite witty! Mrs. Robinsane~BTW, you know Anne Bancroft (B. 1931) was only six years older than Dustin Hoffman (B. 1937), right?

Kerr~ Well, surely you know the issues you have with Gozde/Robsessed have nothing to do with expressing your opinion...the real issue is HOW you did this. You said quite a few nasty, disparaging things to Godze. You were disrespectful and rude.

Again, the problem is not with expressing opinion, but with poor social skills.

My opinion: As for Rob and his being overwhelmed by fame--we should all have his problems! He obviously likes people, is reportedly a generally cheerful fellow and has a good head on his shoulders. He readily demonstrates this daily in the way he handles himself, his work, the press and fans. Seems like he's doing what works for him and is very honest about his feelings. I wouldn't take him so literally. He's such a jokster.

There are many actors who cannot handle the public eye but Rob isn't one of them.

Kespax~Where are you located? Australia? NZ? Which city?

Loisada said...

Damn Ker- Bear... you've effectively killed what was an interesting thread. Go troll somewhere else!!!!

Please ladies ignore her, and send thoughtful questions for Rob instead.

I'll take a shot: Do you have any cult directors (Jarmish, Almovodar, Tarantino, von Trier, Luhrmann) you'd love to work with, and what draws you to their movies?

kespax said...

Chicago - I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and we are starved of Rob stuff.
Even with Kellan/Edi recently here we only got minimal the dvd is being released coverage. They are aware teens love Twilight, but that seems to be about it.

Questions for Rob - I am absolutely dying for somebody to do a proper long in depth interview about all of his work.
Bad Mother's Handbook - details please, how was it working with Cathernine Tate ( I love her, did he see her in Doc Who at all, he used to be a DW fan).
Go into Haunted Airman, Summer House (interesting production notes on that one, seems to be a very collaberative effort).
What things was he being offered that were making him disheartened?

Anything he missed out on he would like to have done.

Has he ever done anything with his sis music wise?

And if we are naughty and get personal, optional to answer or not - why did he get expelled?

Mainly I just want to knwo more about his body of work.

katykeene said...

Kespax I think you have summed it up very well. From the public side of him and some of the give away lines he throws out there occasionally it is easy to see this.
We don't really know the private side of him, and that is how it should be, but enough of his friends are willing to give out snippets of his character to make it pretty obvious that he is a sweet decent guy.
Do you think the English may be just catching on? after all three pages in the Guardian is not to be sneezed at( no matter how badly it is written).
The English are pretty good at self-deprecation too. Hell Rob does it all the time.
Maybe it is better for him, (on a personal level) if they NEVER DO catch on, because then he can go home and relax and not have papps and fans in his face 24/7.
Yeah Australia will probably get it in a few years... (just kidding)

Two questions I would like to ask him..In a perfect world where making money was not involved would you choose music as your career choice or acting?
When will you do an album...... Seriously..WHEN?
Kespax, his sister worked on the soundtrack for Twilight I believe, so they have sort of worked together. Then if not before.

Interview with Mr Pattinson- I haven't had the chance to see "How to be" yet. But judging by the trailers Art's body language is perfectly convincing. How long does it take you to find the right body language for the characters you play?

- If I was the Good Fairy, what kind of role would you ask for?

- Give me one good reason to go on with Edward Cullen and do "Breaking Dawn".

- And now give me ten good reasons why you should decline the part of Edward Cullen in "Breaking Dawn". (If he didn't come up with ten reasons, I'd name them and discuss them with him.)

- You are known to be a fan of Van Morrison. Since your fans are interested in everything you like (books or music), I guess he must have sold a few albums or songs more by now. Did he send you a letter of thanks already?

- Let's talk about your friends. Sam Bradley, Bobby Long and Tom Sturridge find themselves often in the akward situation that people want to talk with them about you more than about their own work. (I would wait for his answers here.)

- What do all of you do not to let this affect your friendship?

- Is it true that you're afraid of the dark and keep a light on in your bedroom at night? (Sorry, have to ask this for personal reasons. The dark scares me badly sometimes, even when I'm in my own bed. I don't leave a light on, but I can't sleep in total darkness.)

- When was the last time you lied?
If he didn't come up with a convincing answer: ... Oh, come on, everyone does it, we all tell little white lies almost everyday - and you are known for making up things in interviews anyway.
- Do you easily remember all the things you make up in interviews or does it take you by surprise when you are confronted with one of your quotes in later interviews?

I would also like to know the English actors he admires, and if Michael Gambon has given him tips on interviews, does he think Gambon is funny -he makes up ludicrous stuff.
And has been asked to appear on UK shows.
Oh and can he dance, would he consider doing a musical - especially with Hugh Jackman and Bazz:)

Chicago girl: Thank you!

And yes, I was aware, re: The Graduate, of their actual closeness in age...if only I could claim such a modest difference between myself and RP! (Although—not to be obnoxious—I've been told I look significantly younger than I am, so that might help bridge the gap! :) )

Incidentally, when I woke up at 5:30 this morning (as with the Cullens, I scarcely need to sleep since discovering Twilight/RP!), I started thinking about what I'd written yesterday, and wished that I had elaborated further. Thus:

Mrs. R: [...] "cougars"?

RP: [slowly disrobing Mrs. R with his hypnotic aqua eyes...and then his fingers] Do you consider yourself to be in that category?

Etc.

Chicago girl now in LA said...

{Kespax}~ Melbourne! Yea! Nice city and very nice people. I was there in '97, seems like yesterday... Saw the excellent art museum (a Rembrandt exhibition), fairy penguins at night, surfers on Great Ocean Road, fantastic National Rhododendron gardens (it was November), Healsville Sanctuary, restaurant tram. Tasmania was nice, too.

Kespax, Loisada, Katykeene (what country are you in?) and Phosphorus, great questions and posts!

Mrs. Robinsane~Men don't worry about age differences, so why should we? DH and I are like Ashton and Demi and once people get over the supposed novelty, it is no big deal.

Mrs. Robinsane said...

Chicago girl:

Yes! You're giving me permission to dream.

But as for the fantasy interview, who am I kidding? Would I really be able to sit alone in a hotel room with RP, and ask him a series of coherent questions? Honestly, I would be too distracted with thoughts of how I might secure some of his priceless genetic material....

And even a "phoner" (thanks for that one) would be difficult for me to endure. For his own safety, RP would have to use one of those witness protection program voice changers, the better to garble his insidious accent....

Oh, I'm hopeless....

phosphorus said...

Thanks, Chicago Girl.

Loisada said...

Phos: great questions.... that need to be asked over a pint or two! Or backstage at the Van Morrison concert coming up in LA?

Kespax: Think you're right, don't get the feeling Twilight went over that big in UK and many Brits are flummoxed by the RP craze. After all Cedric was hardly channeling James Dean...

Mrs. R: Perhaps RP's new buddy Mr. Jackman could share some insight with him as to the wonders of well aged women!

Chicago Girl: the US, greater LA area also. Where age differences are measured more often than not in pocketbook size!

Melbourne is a very civilized place, grew up here and then lived most of my adult life in Western Australia and Tassie - I prefer smaller towns and better weather.

But phew Melbourne has changed dramatically since '97, the whole city has moved a bit towards the river, now big boardwalks, restaurants, nightlife centred there. And we have a fantastic new Federation Square on the river with a brand new culture centre and arts precinct with aussie art housed there. and a lot more peopel actually live in the city & near the river now so it's much more alive.

Chicago girl .... I also live in Melbourne/ Australia.
Have never been to Chicago but have been to LA several times. Drove from LA to SF once in '94. Brilliant drive. Took three days and did all the touristy things even saw the bl***y Hearst Castle.(I mean WTF a media Baron's little holiday house) Stayed a night in Solvang and another in Monterey. There is some beautiful coastline up that way. SF I loved. Have travelled a fair bit in the US. Always loved it. Makes me wonder why I haven't been back for so long. Oh now I remember ....... I found France(love it) and England and Ireland and Italy and.......
Well money only goes so far, and you have to stop to earn more, to do it again.LOL.
(you may assume that I suffer from wanderlust...you would be right)

Kespax . You make Melb sound so good I want to see it myself..Oh wait I live here too LOL
I get what you say about the changes. In many ways it has changed dramatically over the last ten years. In others, not so much. Glad to hear someone saying nice things about Fed Sq. It is a great area.
I tried living in a smaller country town for six months after I left the GC. That is why I ended up in Melb. Wrote a pro/con list, city/small town, city won.
